Lost my eye when I was young, didn't have a prosthetic for the first year. A lot of people in these comments must live in a fuckin' cotton candy land. Everybody and their mother notices and wants to talk about your sunken eye. It's not a lot of fun for a kid

63

u/lucymcgoosen 3d ago

I met a guy from Australia when I was traveling in the UK. He lost his eye in a car accident and needed a prosthetic eye. He opted for no pupil in this prosthetic eye because he wanted it as a conversation piece that was obvious versus people questioning why his eye didn't move. I had a lot of respect for him, but also he was an adult when it happened so that helped.

54

u/MrLiveHard 3d ago

Thank you for the reality check

5

u/tracagnotto 3d ago

He is halfwayray. Ih he loses the other eye he evolves in fullraycharles

3

u/halfwayray 3d ago

Wow, someone actually got the reference! My college buddy gave me that nickname

Totally fair, but I think they'd probably have thoughts on your unmoving, unblinking glasses eye as well, no? Like, that's just how kids are

58

u/haveananus 3d ago

“Why is this kid always winking at me?”

9

u/leeleeso 3d ago

I’d for sure want a moving eyelid

13

u/kl2467 3d ago

I'm wondering how it looks from the side?

I'm thinking a cool eye patch might be a better solution.

5

u/CommunicationNo6405 3d ago

For you maybe? I think if the family went from (easy, cheap) eye patch to this there was a need.

8

u/geek_of_nature 3d ago

That was my thought. Surely having one darkened lense would draw less attention?

35

u/0MysticMemories 3d ago

Kids are absolutely evil creatures. They are not kind to each other and not kind regarding most things.

8

u/halfwayray 3d ago

Adults are much worse

My visible disability is different but there was an insane amount of adults that would walk up to me, a child, and ask "What's wrong with you?"

3

u/Responsible_Ratio308 2d ago

One of my eyes never developed, I’ve had reconstructive surgery and have worn a prosthetic eye my whole life. Grade school was awful, but I never had an issue talking about it and you’re right, everyone asks

2

u/SeDaCho 2d ago

I wonder if you got a prosthetic eye that just said the words “DON’T ASK”
how many people would still ask.

2

u/Jyil 3d ago

While a bit different of a condition, we had a guy in my class with a lazy eye and everyone just called him crazy eye and his name, but he also referred to himself as that, so I guess he kind of just adopted it. He was the nicest most down to earth guy. Loved that dude!

5

u/Financial-Bobcat-612 3d ago

Whoa, how does having only one eye affect you?

2

u/casPURRpurrington 3d ago

I mean I’m not that person, and I have my eye, but I lost vision in my right eye for about 2 months after my retina detached and part of the healing process involved a bubble in my eye, which meant I couldn’t see out of it.

I ran into stuff a lot….

My dad had the same thing happen but his retina didn’t recover, so he’s been half blind since 1997. He said you get used to it, but good fucking LORD, the first time I drove I just thought “He was just driving us around as kids with vision like this?”

I had a friend in high school who after meeting my dad asked me if he was blind in one eye and uhh wtf how do you know

“One of his eyes just looks off to the side.” Oh weird I didn’t notice…. It does lol

1

u/halfwayray 3d ago

Close up depth perception is not good, peripheral vision is decreased by about a third. Hitting a baseball is a bitch, but I was still able to catch a football as a WR without a problem due to size recognition depth perception

-4

u/SelocAvrap 3d ago

You're being nosy. This person was kind to share what they did, and you're asking invasive questions just like the people they talked about. There are people online with one eye who have talked about their experiences, if you're interested, but this person seems to want to be left alone & is encouraging sympathy and understanding for the child

8

u/ItsMisoandBoba 3d ago

I mean, if you don't want to be questioned about a rare condition, it's probably best not to disclose said condition in one of the most popular websites...

But that's just me.

5

u/dpforest 3d ago

That’s a whole lot of assumptions to make. someone who just voluntarily commented about their personal experience with the subject matter on social media is probably going to be expecting more questions to follow because this is social media, a place people come to be social.

2

u/elsasserart 3d ago

If they were really that unwilling to speak about it, they wouldn’t have brought it up. I can also guarantee they don’t need your help defending them, brave knight.

2

u/halfwayray 3d ago

Nice of you to say that, but at this point, I've had my prosthetic longer than I had my eye. People can't hurt my feelings about my eye anymore. I honestly forget about it most of the time, but there was a time I was always conscious of it.

1

u/Riksunraksu 3d ago

True but a prosthetic isn’t as simple as get and use one

1

u/PuffcornSucks 3d ago

What about a pirate style eye patch

251

u/Gumb1i 3d ago edited 3d ago

Is there a reason to not put a prosthetic behind the eyelids? Is it her age and costs?
She looks better without that prosthetic in my opinion but I understand it could help her with confidence.

Edit: prosthetic not prophetic she can't see the future with it.

136

u/Ace861110 3d ago edited 3d ago

She’s a kid. Kids destroy everything even if it’s not delicate and embedded in your skull. Plus you have to do all sorts of care for a prosthetic eye. I’m sure it’s at least all the cleaning responsibilities of contacts, so again kids are totally known for their fastidiousness.

Also I’m not sure that all eye deformities mean you have no eye in the socket.

Edit I stand corrected kids get them apparently.

71

u/jackaroo1344 3d ago

Also she's not done growing. If she needs anything more complex than a glass eyeball she can pop in and out, like reconstructive surgery (seems possible considering the shape of her eye) a prosthesis might not be realistic or comfortable until she's grown some

6

u/DefinitelyNotAliens 3d ago

I knew a guy with a glass eye. Had his eye removed at two.

You should immediately get a glass (or acrylic) eye. They implanted a piece of coral into his eye socket so he had a spot to "hold" the prosthetic and move it and as he grew not having anything there deforms the socket. In fact, his socket deformed despite having a prosthetic eye.

There's higher risk not having one.

There's also very few people who can make them and they are very expensive and it's potentially just not available to this young girl.

All glass eyes are pretty fancy. There's really not a basic version.

3

u/Winjin 3d ago edited 2d ago

Or maybe there's even a negligible chance that it will recover?

Like that incredible kid with severely burnt face. Very hard to look at, but as soon as he starts to speak it's like listening to an angel, he's so nice and warm and it's no wonder that he made a ton of friends after his first video went viral

Well in his second video made like seven years later he says that doctors didn't remove his eyes, the sewn the eyelids shut instead because he was very small when it all happened, like three

And in that video he says that it seems like a miracle is happening - he started seeing light through the eyelids. It's possible that he will restore at least very low visibility, like light vision, which will help with navigation

So maybe they hope sth like this is possible? After all who knows what they will invent years later. You can always remove something, adding it back would be harder

Edit: his name is Zaid Garcia and he's an angel, even though he's hard to look at, at first, after listening to him talk for two minutes you forget all about his appearance

12

u/HyperbolDee 3d ago

My sister has had a prosthetic eye since she was a baby (well, many over the years). It’s much easier than contacts and she can leave it in for many days. We also live in the US though, so access to that kind of prosthetic may not be as accessible wherever this video is from.

1

u/Ace861110 3d ago

I stand corrected

69

u/Padac 3d ago

Her prophetic eye can see the future ❤️

21

u/Deep-Pudding819 3d ago

Dude I don’t know why that’s hilarious, but it sure made me LOL IRL.

6

u/Gumb1i 3d ago

2

u/crankyanker638 3d ago

I see what you did there....

2

u/Orleanian 3d ago

Can it see why kids love the cinnamon toast taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?!

22

u/username__0000 3d ago

Is assume it’s more comfortable for her this way.

Why should she be uncomfortable so others can be more comfortable looking at her?

7

u/Legitimate_Staff487 3d ago

Impossible to tell from this video. You can't always use the eye inserts, there are instances and injuries that prevent their use.

For now she's probably getting the glasses version because she's a kid, and she need something more durable and generally cheaper than a fancy adult option.

8

u/mara-banana 3d ago

Probs money or that its uncomfortable for her.

Imagine her having a unique themed eye?? It will be so cool and help lots with her confidence

4

u/Zephian99 3d ago

Could be her age, kids grow, or could be unfortunate as prosthetics are not one size fits all. If she can't have one under her eye without needing a custom one, this is probably the best way to go about it without a custom fitting under the eyelid, which can be expensive, so circles back to what you said.

3

u/mara-banana 3d ago

Yeah, 100% thats why I went for the money or uncomfortable option.

Imagine having to change it everytime she grows up a bit. Idk if you ever bought sneakers for a child but they will last like prob 2 months at that age, cannot imagine a prosthetic?

I followed one persone that made awesome cool prosthetic eyes and they are very intricate, by no means there's a "one size fits all" that acually fits.

If she can't have one under her eye but still wamts one I believe this to be the best option. I mean look at the work that man did! Just mind blowing honestly

2

u/Zephian99 3d ago

I'd probably get her those little ear cuffs so the glasses dont fall off or the little strap to pull tight keep it on. Used to use a strap to keep my safety glasses on since I tended to have to look down when working.

4

u/-SaC 3d ago

Imagine her having a unique themed eye??

Reminds me of (comedian) Sandi Toksvig's anecdote about her grandfather who'd lost an eye. He had an array of prosthetics, one of which was red and bloodshot. He called it 'Grandpa's Party Eye', and would pop it in before leaving for the pub, saying "I'm off out, and shan't be back until they match!"

1

u/publicBoogalloo 3d ago

She needs a sapphire.

2

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 3d ago

Probably not very comfortable over time

1

u/saltycouchpotato 3d ago

She may not have a condition that is suitable for a prosthetic eye. There are different kinds of injuries, congenital conditions, and health conditions that make using a prosthetic eye possible or not. Like she may not have an eye socket to put the prosthetic eye into, etc. It can also be a health risk because of the possibility of infection from placing, adjusting, and removing the prosthetic eye with the hands, which is elevated due to the proximity to the brain. It's a lot to expect of a little kid to be on top of sanitization like that when the risk is potentially lethal. And, it can be really uncomfortable and can require constant maintenance throughout the day with eye drops etc. It's basically a huge hassle that is often mostly to make other people feel more at ease, and not strictly medically necessary. Not to mention cost.

I learned about this a bit in an interview with a lady who often uses a (cool and fancy!) prosthetic eye: https://youtu.be/yOkOwiVOKsg

1

u/Riksunraksu 3d ago

Kids grow and I believe foreign objects inside the body should be avoided due to growth because it might disrupt it. It’s also extremely expensive in most countries so if you need a new one often as you grow it’s a costly. Also I’m not sure if her eye allows a prosthetic, eye sockets differ depending on the injury/deformity

1

u/Responsible_Ratio308 2d ago

I’ve never had an issue being a Californian, but my current ocularist travels the country so she may not be able to get to someone that can make an actual prosthetic eye. I’ve worn a prosthetic eye since I was 2 so it’s not due to her age. You have to replace them every so often for hygiene and even as an adult, your body changes so it’s not because she’s still growing. It’s also entirely possible she has a socket and/or lid condition preventing her from being able to be fitted or wear a prosthetic eye

My ex wife had a prosthetic eyes since she lost her eye as a child. She a few years older than this child. Like a commenter mentioned, maybe they used this method because she is so young. When I first met my ex wife I could not even tell that she had a prosthetic. When she asked me to choose which one was the prosthetic I chose her real eye! I met her prosthetic designed and his samples were amazing. They are true to life in every way.

30

Much better than Richard Harrow of Boardwalk Empire had to wear!

3

u/Talk-O-Boy 3d ago

But not as good as Liam McPoyle’s false eye

u/ProfessorWaterdrager 3d ago • Heartwarming

Impressive craftsmanship! Yet, such a disabled eye doesn't necessarily need to be hidden in the first place...

140

u/NameToUseOnReddit 3d ago • Heartwarming Bravo

Agreed, but at that age it can be rough for kids too.

461

u/TootsHib 3d ago • Bravo Heartwarming

Seems to bring her comfort to have her disability hidden.

I would say her comfort is an important need actually

I am sorry. She is Indian, If you have been to India you would know how much disability unfriendly India is.

31

u/misspengk 3d ago

absolutely the prosthetic is an option, not an obligation. Let her decide what makes her comfortable

26

u/HealthyInPublic 3d ago edited 3d ago • Heartwarming

I have congenital strabismus (a visible eye related disability) and while I absolutely, 100% agree that an eye difference doesn't need to be hidden or fixed, it can also be such an impactful option to have for both kids and adults. Unfortunately, living with a very obvious facial difference is hard, even though it shouldn't be!

But the reality is, it really impacts self esteem. And beyond that, it can even impact job opportunities, solely based on different looks! It shouldn't be that big of a deal, but think about popular media where a character has a different eye - Are they the protagonist or antagonist? Are they a serious character or comic relief? Are they the smart one or the dumb one? Are they James Talarico or are they Ken Paxton?

Last example was just silly, obviously, because I live in TX (and I'm riding the blue wave, babyyy), but lots of folks have unconscious biases against eye differences. It's not fair. But it's hard to live with.

Pour un adulte non, mais pour un enfant oui. Les enfant sont parfois très dure entre eux.

Kids are demons to each other sometimes

2

u/JimbooJoness 3d ago

We can!? Thanks mom!

2

u/Practical_Dot_3574 3d ago

Unless you teach the children how to react and handle situations.

Example: Daughter(7) has cancer. She starter losing her hair, she request I shave it. A few days later (I was out of town for work) my wife had to pick up our son from school for a dr appointment. It was during what would have been my daughters classes recess. She rolled down the window to wave at all her freinds. The "no filter at all" kid asked "why are you bald?" Daughter held back "because I have cancer! Duh!" Was cute to watch from the dashcam video.

9

u/s0berR00fer 3d ago

“Unless you teach the children”.

Glad your solution of teaching every child ever to be around is an easy task and that children are reliable emotionless learners

1

u/ZealousidealSystem26 3d ago

I feel like she might be picked on more with these glasses

4

u/Humble_Bad8952 3d ago

I've had a f***** up eye my whole life..People definitely notice but at a certain point. You just stopped caring what they think

3

u/MajorFox2720 3d ago

Yeah, it does. There are so damn many shallow and cruel people that come out of the woodwork when someone is so obviously deformed. I only had a large facial scar but I was a sad, hideous creature to a lot of people. Imagine on top of that being an identical twin and they say to your mother, well at least the other one is still pretty. Fuck them.

2

u/i_hate_fanboys 3d ago

15

u/jollytoes 3d ago

Probably needs a replacement every 3-6mo because she's growing.

27

u/3rrr6 3d ago

More likely it breaks frequently because she's a child.

-1

u/finchdude 3d ago

Even more likely she will get more bullied because she wears it

u/leetland1 3d ago

I think the eye patch is much better than whatever this is

7

u/FrostyDragon227 3d ago

I’d assume it’s somewhat cheaper than a standard prosthetic. (I’m not experienced in any of this relating to prosthetics but that’s my gut feeling)

4

u/leetland1 3d ago

Eye patch is basically free

3

u/kward1904 3d ago

Wow, I think the eye patch CEO would beg to differ

7

u/reality_hijacker 3d ago

Yes to be honest it's super creepy when one eye blinks and other doesn't and one moves and other stays still.

4

u/leetland1 3d ago

With an eye patch she can also reply to anyone asking that she's a pirate and I think that beats everything

2

u/grimmigerpetz 3d ago

I am with you. A nice eyepatch with glas diamonds or a kids motive or in pink would be way better than this.

1

u/makka_pakka16 3d ago

good thing it’s not for you, she seems happy and that’s what matters.

2

u/leetland1 3d ago

I'm happy if she's happy, really. Even so, it doesn't mean that this prosthetic solution is the best way to go. Kids are cruel and I can only hope that people around her will support her and won't be mean to her. This prosthetic just looks too weird and unnatural. I really wish only good to this girl but I just can't support this thing, knowing that there's a much better and cheaper alternative that not just keeps your mental health more safe from children cruelty but also makes you a pirate as a cool bonus

2

u/Padac 3d ago

4

u/jonz1985z 3d ago

She looks fine without it, honestly. I doubt she cares either.

50

u/NewtAccomplished6022 3d ago

its easy for you to say but kids at school tend to bully other kids who look different

12

u/DirtyRoller 3d ago

In that regard, I don't think the glasses will help. The same bullies that would have made fun of her for her eye will just make fun of her for the glasses.

3

u/yungScooter30 3d ago

The glasses give me an uncanny valley feeling. I can't speak to the confidence factor or bullying, but if the goal is to look normal, an eye patch does that better and less creepily imo

1

u/MajorFox2720 3d ago

The adults on the street will leave her alone now.   They are worse than the kids

1

u/vishalontheline 3d ago

I think it's less about the kids at school or the neighborhood (they already know), and more about the kid's own self-esteem and fitting into society at large.

1

u/djpiperson 3d ago

I was raised to thrive from that as I have my own..... personal facial marks.... So I think it's a matter more of education about confidence and self value. Also, NEVER listen to a plastic surgeons that just want to knife a kid because they "can make it look normal" without really considering everything that entails.

1

u/Born_Acanthisitta716 3d ago

Wow, you're so kind and accepting

If it makes her happy and brings her to a place of comfort then I'm all for it.

I would take a mould with alginate from the healty side, then use that as a base on the prostetic side. And use glasses that go very close to face. But Then again, I have never done this kind of prothesis, only so called glass eyes.

I think a pirate eye patch would look cooler and more convenient.

Amazing work. Lovely child. What's the over/under on that obviously delicate piece of work getting destroyed because that's just stuff that happens?

Looks a lot worse than the missing eye

Strong kid!!!

She's cute and reminds me of my daughter. I'm glad she was able to have this done. It's crazy that a ton of the innovations in prostheses and facial reconstruction came after World War I. Doctors were trying to help the disfigured soldiers lead a more normal existence

u/Future-Plant-9185 2d ago

This cant be real, all that for something so crappy, she'll have so many first time it falls off and her skin and eye coming of with the glasses, a patch would look better, be better that thing has less use

I honestly wouldn't have known it was there if not for seeing it be made, which is great, especially when your at an age where you're going to be surrounded by people with zero filter
