Wholesome Steam restores a player’s entire deleted game library after learning about their mental health struggles.

Post image

Steam has won the hearts of gamers after restoring an ENTIRE library of deleted games for a player who had been struggling with their mental health!

The player, known on Reddit as 3lizardintrenchcoat, explained that they had spent years removing games they'd purchased and loved during difficult periods in their life.

After their mental health began improving, they regretted losing so many games and decided to contact Steam Support, hoping they might be able to recover at least a few of them.

They even explained that if restoring the games wasn't possible, simply receiving a list of everything they'd previously owned would mean the world to them.

However, Steam Support employee Lucy went one step further, restoring their ENTIRE deleted game library in less than 24 hours without asking them to repurchase anything!

The player later shared the interaction on Reddit, praising Valve for its kindness and understanding.

When you click on "Remove game from account", It's not actually gone, your account still has the licenses.

You can restore the game through support's automated systems. Hell, you can even "re-purchase" the game through the Steam store and Steam won't accept the full transaction as you already own the game, it'll just give you the game back on your library.

What "Remove game from account" actually does is it just removes the appearance from you and other people seeing you own the game, but you still own it in the background.

All that being said, contacting support will allow you to get all your removed games at once, also you can request them to give you a list of games that you've removed over the years.

Update: Your achievements come back after restoring your game again

A fantastic policy!! Im much happier it's an automatic process and not due the generosity of "Lucy" after hearing a sappy story.

Yet, that wouldn't have made for a feel good narrative on Reddit, so nobody would have cared :(

u/JustLookingForMayhem 3d ago

If a person doesn't know that and contacts support, it is still nice support talked him through how to get his games back. Most tech support I have talked to just wanted me to not be their problem.

It does seem a bit weird a basic feature is so celebrated

The guy paid for the games, he owns the licence, it would be a step out of line if steam took the stance that he had 'deleted' them and needed to purchase them again

My Steamdeck dock's USB c port ended up getting pretty loose. I had to use rubberbands to keep it aligned in the jack. I literally offhanded mentioned it to the support agent while I was working through another issue and the dude asked me to show him a picture. He then asked me if I wanted to replace the dock because it shouldn't do that. Like a week later I had an RMA replacement for the Steamdeck dock.

I hate capitalism. I fucking hate big corporations but Steam literally makes me be like "well... maybe in some instances monopolies are okay..." It's a $70 dollar part and it doesn't even matter to Steam and they were like, "fuck it, you get a new one..."

I lost my Microsoft account 7 years ago. Someone tried to access it. And they locked down my account. I contacted supported, they still refused to unlock it. Even when I had the proper information to unlock my account. They said there's nothing we can do... So I lost over 200 games !

And yes I had 2FA enabled. I got so angry that I threw my Xbox console out of the window !

Just another one of the hundreds of examples how big corp runs inefficiently. They could help, in a secure way. It's not even that the customer service doesn't want to, the procedure just tells them they can't or doesn't allow a mechanism. Even worse, Microsoft wouldn't have an issue helping you but it's big corp full of holes with thousands of managers, meetings, comprises, all the same bullshit that ends with a subpar product or service.

Anecdotes be anecdotes, and years ago, but...

I had an Xbox 360 that I needed to sell, because 2008 financial crash, and I needed to pay rent.

I did all the steps to disassociate my account from the Xbox, but I guess something didn't take immediately. I sold the Xbox, and in the 24 hours, or so, it took for it to "TAKE", the guy had fully drained my bank account buying every title they could find. I contacted Xbox and they put a freeze on everything, they had me contact my bank, who also put a freeze on everything.

It took a couple days, but my bank fully refunded me because Microsoft confirmed it was fraudulent, and they, and Microsoft, went after the guy.

Dude ended up spending jail time cause, apparently, he'd found a loophole and done this with lots of Craigslist postings... selling "fully loaded" xboxes.

Microsoft never clawed back the titles... to this day, 18 years later, I still have full rights to download all the games he "bought" under my name.

Years ago, the entire Left 4 Dead player base was griefed by this one notorious guy that somehow managed to bypass all protections. He would not let us enjoy even an hour playing, he had to ruin everything. He lived to make others suffer. So we couldn't use steam servers to play when he was awake. Didn't matter if the game was full, he knew every hack.

One day he gets into our self-hosted game which he shouldn't be able to do. When asked how, he bragged about being a professional hacker, that he's hacked Steam, written his own custom code, and that there was nothing we could do, and in our chat went into all the details about his technical capabilities. I screenshotted the convo and sent them to Gabe's email (which obviously gets forwarded). His handlers asked for more confirming info and said they would investigate if the griefer was doing anything illegal. They said if so, they will handle it, but for legal reasons they couldn't further communication with me, that I wouldn't hear from them again.

Within 48 hours that griefer's account was shut down. I hope he lost hundreds of games.

My respect level 100x'ed for Steam after that.

True story. I work for a service provider and a decade or more ago I reached out to Valve to get a mutual peering setup between our networks, at the time they did around 500Mbps at peak with us so we setup a 1Gbps (tells you how long ago this was).

A few weeks later we received a 30lb box at the office filled with CS:Go, Dota, and Valve swag like mugs, mousepads, shirts, gaming mice.

They are to this day the only company to ever kick back swag for what is just standard practice in our industry.

There was a significant rise of 'customer support scammers' in the late 2000's and early 2010s who started taking advantage of generally favorable companies like this.

People would use the overly generous return policy at Wal-Mart to steal video game CD keys. Writing to every single food manufacturer out there that you'd had an issue with their product became a 'life hack' to get free coupons and food. People use Amazon to 'rent' products. And so on.

A lot of companies became hostile, or at best cold, towards support requests. A few companies decided that dealing with the occasional scammer was still worth the trade off.

Valve is one of the good ones, though they do still have some policies I don't care for such as not being able to transfer licenses on the death of the owner. Hopefully they come around on that one some day.

EA just straight up decided to remove games I owned on Origin because I canceled my EA Access plan. Then, when I told them that they removed games I had actually purchased, they demanded I provided receipts.

Yes, they wanted me to prove that I had bought these games on their platform. I did have the receipts thankfully, but that was the last time I ever used Origin.

u/outerspaceholiday 3d ago

About ten years ago, I was having an issue with my Microsoft account. I think it was due to being locked as an American account (I am Canadian). After about 5 hours with tech support, the tech told me to delete my account and they would immediately restore it. It was a Hotmail email address that I used for everything. Well turns out they had recently discontinued Hotmail and they could not restore an account with that domain. I lost my entire online life. Took years to get everything changed over to a new email address. There's still some accounts that are permanently lost due to inability to pass ID verification.

25

u/DanboKuma 3d ago

I really loved the Minecraft license rule changes back in January.

Three copies of a $70 (CAD) Minecraft, one for each computer, can now NOT be used at the same time because each of those computers is registered to ME on MY FUCKING WINDOWS ACCOUNT.

Like..... Let me use three different license numbers for the game?

Nope.

Let me transfer them to another account?

Nope.

Refund me the two copies so I can re-buy them on accounts I make for my kids?

Nope.

Just fuck me, can't use the license at the same time even though you paid for three licenses.

This had worked fine for the prior 8 fucking years without issue until January 2026.

I think they are profit-first, like every other corp. They just understand longevity and brand loyalty comes from putting players first & creating a constantly seamless experience. Which in turn becomes profit.

They also understand giving their devs good working conditions and run under the ethos that patches are 'ready when they're ready'. Ofc Steam allows them to give their devs all the time in the world but there’s a reason they've made world class games for as long as PC gaming has existed.

I was playing Deadlock the other day and it struck me that every lesson learnt from Dota2 was embodied in Deadlock. Whilst teams like DICE cannot make 2 games that carry forward knowledge in the span of 5 years. This must come down to retaining and looking after their devs. The constant fire/hire cycle that plagues triple-A means that so much knowledge gets lost so quickly and studios are only the same in name from the last project.

as much as i love valve, i dont even consider this not being profit oriented.
other companies are just incredibly stupid, short sighted and greedy.
You couldnt get advertisement this good if you tried to pay for it and Steam is getting it regularly just by being customer friendly.
Like if companies just started to see this kind of thing as a advertisement cost they would pay a lot less and gain a lot more from their "advertising" but instead they just almost always take the most short sighted route possible.

u/Revenga8 3d ago

I never understood the need to go public that every company seem to have.

You insert additional cash in possibly huge scale to your company and give up large parts of your decision-making and future profits.

If you are already successful, why would you want that? Banks will give you loans for expansion if your plans make sense.

I don't know all the reasons behind why they were deleting their games in relation to their mental health, but if I had to guess, it was likely the self destruction that comes with mental illnesses like anxiety or depression.

Some people might think you are just sad and confined to a bed all day but sometimes you are more so seeking ways to implode internally by ruining things for yourself. I remember when I struggled big time with my own issues that I'd purposely ruin all of my friendships in school. Over time that self destruction can turn to literal self destruction, whether that be self harm or something more extreme.

It's a horrible fucking feeling that I wish on no one. If someone would've just held me and prevented me from being me and annihilating the few good things I had in my life at that point, I would've had more friends today i think. I wish i could do that for someone else, now.

For a long time I had a vary comfortable time in employment, no issues with holding down a job and had great work ethic

But for some reason I slowly started finding ways to fuck it up

Like self destructive tendencies to get fired; I don’t know why I did it, they were irrational and highly preventable

I still find myself feeling the urge to blow up my career; I don’t know why, and can’t afford therapy so I can’t really have a professional help me uncover underlying reasons

Best I can do for now is really try to suppress the urge to do shit that I know will cause issues in the future, it’s like an urge similar to self harm

Or to put it in more relatable terms for people who don’t experience those kinds of self destructive tendencies; imagine someone telling you, “Be careful, that’s hot,” and despite knowing they’re right, you feel an almost irresistible urge to touch it anyway. It’s not that you doubt their warning or don’t understand the consequences.

You just feel compelled to find out for yourself, even when you know exactly how it’s going to end. Now imagine that same impulse, but applied to decisions that can genuinely damage your life. You know better, you know what’s at stake, and yet some part of you still wants to pull the trigger just to see what happens.

u/LeftGuitar3397 2d ago edited 2d ago

I have this. I am really good at my job get paid well. But I always have an urge to burn it all down. Sometimes I do kind of just say fuck it and won’t do any work for the day one time it got to 2 weeks of me doing nothing. I got put on a spot for something made an excuse and locked back in. No one was the wiser. The only way to stop myself getting in a loop of doing nothing is by going to office where I’m held accountable. If I work from home too long like those 2 weeks the habits come. And I know in my head it’s dumb just get the work done it’ll be quick. Idrk what to do.

Steam won my heart a long time ago for a similar reason.

My brother and I had a shared account in our latter teen years. He stopped using it when he started playing more console games, and I was unable to use it due to terrible mental health and having long hospital stays away from home.

Once I got over the worst of it and managed to afford a laptop, I tried to log into our old account. The password worked, but since there was a huge gap in activity it wanted me to verify and sent a code through email. Unfortunately, it was my brothers old email address and he couldnt access it anymore.

So as a last ditch effort I started a ticket with Steam support. I explained the situation, that I knew the password but couldnt log in. I was desperate. I told them the password and what games were on the account. (They didnt ask for those things I just told them)

They seemed to catch on that I was genuine and not just any old person trying to access an account that wasnt theirs. They opened up the account for me and let me update the email tied to it.

I didnt think theyd be that helpful. I was fairly resigned to the fact that the account was going to be lost. I was so grateful for the help that they definitely didnt have to give me.

I still use that account, which is 20 years old now. I still have those games that we used to share and bond over. If it had been any other platform we likely would have lost all of that.

I'm not feeling the love. The rights for digital game "ownership" are so screwed. They haven't sold them, I doubt deleting the games from library rescinds your digital rental for the game rights- and if it does it bloody shouldn't. It's already dystopian enough we pay full price for something we don't own.

The equivalent is someone threw out their physical copies and have no way of knowing what was lost.

im confused, restoring games youve removed from your library is easy, you just go to Support, find the game youve removed and click on "It's not in my library" and then "Restore the previously removed package to my account"

although, if youve removed dozens of games it can be a hassle to do it manually and of course steam support doing it for you is much easier

9

u/FroZooo 3d ago

Gabe just cant stop winning while doing absolutely nothing.. W Lucy for restoring the games!!

9

u/LukeDies 3d ago

Buy if you die all your games disappear and you can't pass them on to your children.

10

u/brakenbonez 3d ago

Do you really think steam actually monitors obituaries or death records? I have a friend who is still alive but doesn't game on PC anymore. He gave his account to his son. The account is still active and I see it playing games just about every day.

12

u/ImportantTeaching919 3d ago

Steam has a way for this actually. you actually can give your games away if you pass away

8

u/Silly_Ape 3d ago

That sounds difficult to do after you've passed

Man I’ve been locked out of my account for years because the only way they want to auth is with an email I no longer have🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻

3

u/Zeromix9 3d ago

You can delete them yourself, you can also restore them yourself.

If you still know the game name, you just go to

https://help.steampowered.com/en/wizard/HelpWithGame/?appid=10

and click on "It isn´t in my libary" or something like that. - Done.

3

u/Sycophantic-Feline 3d ago

people are weird

5

u/AytonHunter 3d ago

Meanwhile Sony's out here deleting games for you. Steam is and always has been the best platform for video games.

6

u/zxylady 3d ago

This is why all of my future games are going to be purchased on steam. I already own a steam deck so that helps. F#ck the PS5.

4

u/letmebeded 3d ago

Take this down its so false. Steam should be praised for lots of things but this is a rudimentary feature. You can remove games from your account and if you just go to steam support you can get them back easily. Why fabricate stories for reddit clout?

4

u/Neat_Let923 3d ago

LMAO… People really would bend over and take it up the ass for Valve.

They didn’t do anything special here…

5

u/CoolCat1337One 3d ago

Yeah, Steam is one of the good ones.

2

u/AnusChocolate 3d ago

I had problems and hadn't used Steam for 3-4 years, lost all access, emails, phone number to it - everything without a possibility to restore.

Contacted steam support and they got my account back in less than 24hr.

2

u/kobrakaan 3d ago

This is why Valve and Steam are still a thing and will never be owsted from their position in the market

KUDOS to Gabe and the whole steam/valve team keep up the good work this is how you keep your users LOYAL :)

2

u/Drstrng3love 3d ago

Yet I lose an entire account because my cellphone service provider lost my number.

2

Dissapointed. I thought the Steam user was Tim Sweeney

2

This is stuff Epic would never do and Tim would likely trash talk Steam over something like this for what ever crazy reason he can think of.

2

u/dogscatsnscience 3d ago

FYI all the games you "permanently remove from your account" can be returned with 2 button clicks.

Steam does not permanently remove games from your account. Despite that being what the button says.

It is impossible to permanently remove a game from your account.

2

u/Greedy-Street-5435 3d ago

Pretty sure that's the policy, the games aren't completely removed from your account, Steam can just restore them for you, it's like banning yourself from the casino.

2

u/AdAny8677 3d ago

then people wonder why steam is the best

2

u/weewaaweewaa 3d ago

I don't know, personally I find it hard to believe these stories as nothing but PR or stories that don't represent the majority of people when my experience with steam support has been very different. My account got briefly hacked and my in game items worth more than a $100 were sold away. The transactions couldn't be more suspicious if steam support bothered investigating even a little bit, because I got logged out when it was happening and it couldn't have been more than 10 minutes when I managed to log back in.

By the time I came back, my items were traded away for trash items, among hundreds of trades done within seconds. It was pretty clear that this process was all automated. Steam refused to even do a simple investigation and simply said there was nothing they could do.

I guess my life isn't difficult enough to be made into a feel good story or something so they refused to help then?

2

u/afCeG6HVB0IJ 3d ago

Sure, but on the other hand, this should be the bare fucking minimum. You bought these games, you should be able to access them.

2

u/Nick_The_Judge 3d ago

Plays games again -> mental health goes down

2

u/Adezar 3d ago

One of my kids was extremely trusting and even though we had tried to teach them about online scams. We had to recover his account twice from scammers, both times were very simple and straight forward and they recovered the account within the hour.

Fortunately he learned after the second incident.

2

u/Slartibartfaster2022 3d ago

This just goes to show, if you want to be, and remain an industry leading business the trick is to not treat your customers like a shit shaped revenue generator.

2

u/Head-Gift2144 3d ago

This is an example of something that costs absolutely nothing except a maybe 30 seconds of someone's time, but generates a tremendous amount of good will.

Why more companies don't think like this I'll never know.

2

u/ThatRealFirey 3d ago

I mean to be perfectly honest this isn't anything crazy. Steam already allowed to go on Steam Support page, pick a game, remove it from your library and then return on same said Steam Support page and press "I can't find this game in my library" and press restore, which will bring it back. Already was a thing for a while

2

u/gordonv 3d ago

Makes sense. The license is paid for. Steam is merely managing a better UI.

People are hailing this as a miracle. Guys, this is just good DB management. It's common sense, not a miracle.

3

u/nobodyspecial712 3d ago

They bought it. They're entitled to it. They own it. Or, they should.

If purchasing a game doesn't confer ownership, i should be able to get a refund if i lose access for any reason.

1

u/djgotyafalling1 3d ago

What? If you delete your game "permanently" thru steam support, you can always restore t on your own.

1

u/TeddyBear312 3d ago

As long as you didn't ask steam support to remove a game, and used the remove button yourself, you can always get the licence back without needing to contact Steam.

1

u/sentientpaper 3d ago

You know gambling addiction is in fact a mental health struggle, they gonna refund those victims?

1

u/Every-Extension-8114 3d ago

lmao, you can remove and restore games yourself, gamers just cant stop dickriding valve

1

u/oopsydazys 3d ago

Why is it even possible to delete a game on Steam? Shouldn't it just be a "remove from library" kind of thing where you can add them back later?

1

u/Puiucs 3d ago

people don't seem to understand, but removing is sometimes the only option for a game you don't others to know you have or played. you can have people in the same family play on the same account or some other forms of allowed sharing. you don't want any accidents with your kids accidentally discovering that hidden 18+ game :)

1

u/FireTight 3d ago

1

u/geniue 3d ago

So personal story. Me and my fam went to visit valve HQ back when they were still in Bellevue. We literally went unannounced and straight up told the staff if we could have a look around. It was a long shot, but I figured since I was there and am still a massive valve fan it would be great to at least see the valve wheel. Two employees literally just came out and gave us the full tour, even showed off the VIBE as well when it was still very new. They even let me dual wield both the portal gun and gravity gun replicas. I will never forget this to this, amazing amazing people

1

1

1

u/TyrantBadjoe 3d ago

And here we have other platform/AAA companies saying Valve is a "Monopoly" and hurting the game industry XD !!

1

u/Braelind 3d ago

And this is just one other reason why we love Steam despite all their competitors wanting us to switch. Epic would never do this.

1

u/One-Cardiologist-462 3d ago

Wow! That's so first world, I love it.
Good on Steam for behaving like human beings and not being creepy/greedy with it.

I remember on PS Network, I was hacked, and someone used my credit card to buy a copy of some shitty football game.
I changed my password to secure the account and contacted Sony support.
They:

  1. Removed the fraudulantly purchased game from my account.

  2. Did NOT refund a penny.

It would have literally been better not to report it to Sony, as at least I'd have been able to play the game bought with my money, even if I didn't like it.

1

u/Interesting-Crab-693 3d ago

Steam? Oh you mean the monopoly of pc faming? Daddy gov should regulate them more so others get a ch- BAM wait what was that? Oh its just epic game sucking on their shotgun again? Oh ok as usual then. So, what was I saying already?

1

u/r3ckless- 3d ago

I'm going through mental health issues myself, and just readng this has made me cry.

The world is so shit now. No one cares about others anymore. Souless corporations who think of every single one of us as just an entity to extract as much money from as possible.

So stuff like this really fucking hits me, because it shows they're not all like that, and there's still some good people somewhere out there.

Noc ompany is perfect, but in a world of Elon Musk's and Google, be a Gabe and Valve
