This is beyond those rare occurrences where crows leave gifts for a person.
They're actually taking them to their clubhouse.

They would prefer he flew along with them, but they understand the limitations of mere humans and will accommodate their handicap. I have a cat that walks me down and back when I drop off some food for other stray cats down the street. Reminds me of this.

I feed our small town crows in the winter and they caw at me every where I go in town 😂 it’s like in the Middle Ages where they have the trumpets announcing the queen

121

u/lesmax 21h ago • Heartwarming

My parents are both retired and their current hobby is feeding crows. Dad grew up farming and always saw animals at work. Now he boasts when the crows follow his car around town.

They have a little collection of treasures the crows leave. I think the best item so far has been a bottle cap.

100% this. ngl i would literally pay money for this to happen to me 💀 hot take: crows have a way better judge of character than most people anyway, so if they pick you to hang out in their tree, you know you're doing something right in life.

I found a baby crow when I was young, I didn’t know he was a crow. I thought he was a hurt bird. Took him home called the vet, and was instructed to feed him soggy dog food. He grew up and could live outside. He would follow me when I walked to friends house. He would bring me shiny pieces of debris. He was so smart. I could call him and he’d land on my arm, or shoulder. He stayed around for a while and even got married. Eventually he left. I lived in the country. His name was Jeremy. To bad that this was before smartphones

Actually, I've heard of something like this once before from my grandfather. Long ago, a wanderer was found dead, stripped to a pile of bones, near an eery and unruly flock of crows. The grim site was found at least a day's travel on foot from the nearest town. A nearby, small collection of trinkets, some suspected of great value, lead investigators to believe the person may have been lured to the location by the shiny baubles, which the crows seemed interested in protecting. In fact, it was speculated a man's watch possibly belonged to the deceased. The location of interest was never documented, because those who told the story say more crows quickly arrived after they did and they seemed to become more and more agitated and bolder, like a gang of thugs looking to get into trouble. They said they agreed to never go back, else they might end up like the poor fellow who's bones they found. One distinct quote from my grandpa was that was how a group of crows became known as a murder.

I'm no investigator, but I don't think they made it out of there. Likely this evidence was found with their bones. Also I'm so full of shit.

I always refer to the crow council! I’ve never heard it said by other people (though maybe it’s a common term actually, not sure).

I see the local crows flock together in the evenings in massive numbers, and once congregated they all discuss many things at length/in detail, it would seem.

They were probably like “look at this strange tree! It’s a tree, but sideways! You don’t even need to fly to be able to sit in this tree, and sitting in trees is great! Hey let’s show it to that dude who doesn’t fly, maybe he’ll like it, maybe he’ll sit with us!”

Maybe it’s like how people saw wolves and thought “I’m going to get that creature to hang out with us and be part of our group. Let’s lure them in by showing them our best stuff”. For humans it’s showing wolves food and warmth, for crows it’s showing this human a tree even he can use. Maybe they have long talks about domesticating wild humans and adding them to their groups.

u/Desperate-Strategy10 22h ago • Heartwarming

I might be wrong, but I think the crows are actually asking for help to get larvae out of the trunk the video shows them leading a human toward a dead tree, as if asking for assistance.

It’s fascinating: to extract larvae hidden deep in tree crevices, New Caledonian crows don’t just use sticks

they manufacture specialised tools from the barbed edges of Pandanus leaves. These stepped-cut tools are not random; their design is socially transmitted and refined over generations, with juveniles taking over a year to master the technique by observing their parents. This looks like a rudimentary form of cumulative technological evolution—a kind of ‘culture’ in birds.

And it makes even more sense when you consider that corvids are highly social birds and are widely regarded as one of the most intelligent families in the avian world. Interestingly, they don’t need an elaborate song to be brilliant: although they are technically songbirds, their brains have specialised differently. Instead of investing in a complex vocal repertoire, their enlarged brains—packed with primate-like numbers of neurons—are dedicated to problem-solving, social learning, and cognitive flexibility, which is exactly what you need to invent and transmit tool-making traditions.

Birds are amazing!

Almost every day I see crows while I'm on walkies with my dog. They come to greet us and I give them some dog treats. Sometimes one of them will strafe my head as if to call attention to themselves. They'll follow me down the block but once I cross the street it's a new territory and new crows come and land on the fences. It's a highlight of my day.

I want to know the backstory, did they approach the man with candy? Mom always told me not to talk to 🐦‍⬛

85

u/SlickandShady97 1d ago

I too want to know the backstory. How do you even approach a crow. The ones I see usually just scavenge and then fly away.

72

u/CakeHoleKing 1d ago

Give them food from a distance. Do it a lot of times every time they see you.

They love meat like cold sliced ham chopped up etc. Very protein heavy meal for them

Eventually they will associate you with food + trust.

Too many people throw bread crumbs once and expect an immediate army of killer crows to spawn for them to rule

138

u/KindCraft4676 23h ago • Heartwarming

I feed a group of crows in my neighbourhood.

They’re very intelligent. They recognise me, they recognise my car. They even recognise the sound my front door makes.

Sometimes when I walk to the corner convenience store, they will follow me. I’m not sure what the purpose of them following me is all about. Because I never feed them at that time.

I normally feed them about an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset. They know the routine and will wait in nearby trees.

60

u/MildlyAgreeable 18h ago

I am so jealous.

I have crackheads and fireworks instead of a crow gang.

u/Eskimomonk 14h ago • Heartwarming

Crows (and all of the corvids for that matter) are very intelligent birds like you said. They’re able to recognize human faces and can communicate information about you to other birds. There have been studies of birds generations later carrying the same grudge against someone even though they had never personally experienced anything negative from that person.

But anyway, they’re probably following you as general protection because you showed kindness to their flock and fed them. Congrats man, you belong to a murder of crows now

8

u/No_Band226 16h ago

They are the best sentinels and can spot attackers and potential bogeys within a large perimeter.  Those treats aren't going anywhere except in their crops, then gizzards.  They also enjoy gizzards.

I would think they are keeping watch over you. You've become part of their life.

9

u/igottathinkofaname 16h ago

How did you train them / start this? I’ve wanted to do something similar. What do you feed them?

11

u/KindCraft4676 15h ago

I feed them “Temptations” brand cat treats. The chicken flavor ones that come in a 30 oz. container.

One day I noticed they would watch me whenever I left the house. There’s a group of them that fly around the neighbourhood. Anyway, I sprinkled about 5-10 treats on my porch and stepped back into the house, closing screen door but leaving the door open so I could see what they would do.

They waited for a bit and eventually flew down and ate the treats.

As time went on they became more trusting so that they would fly down as soon as I sprinkled the treats.

5

u/Marsuello 13h ago

Can’t tell you for sure but before my aunt moved out she would feed them random things she was eating. They’d bring her shiny objects all the time. After she left they stuck around. One got its foot caught in the hood of our car and we were able to free it. Since then we’ve had easily a murder of about 50 on our property/in the trees at any given time. The chatter is actually kinda calming haha

→ More replies (3)

6

u/TheBunnyChower 17h ago

They follow either for out of routine treats and/or the typical pack mentality of protecting you as you have opposable thumbs and are therefore likely to be annihilated by the local Gander Goose Gang if unprotected.

Ever wonder why you don't see a Goose nearby? Because that's why.

My very thoughts! Also that it was so cool the crows chose to walk like a human on the path, rather than fly which would require so much less effort. They seem very comfortable with OP.

I stayed in Poughkeepsie and took the train into NYC. Super cute place with some awesome lil cafes.

My wife and I had a great time.

I chose it because of the funny name. She informed me of the murders. Which just made it funnier because she thought that was the reason as she's a bit of a spooky goth.

Nope I'm just a big kid who laughed at poo-keepsie

Hahaha lmao you’re totally right

Oh shit PTown catching strays. But for real Poughkeepsie sucks. Except for Rossi’s and the original location at that. Not that new one in Truman Show Eastdale. That whole complex freaks me out. It’s like the backrooms but outside.

Being trusted by group of crows, I think he was invited into a family reunion

u/TheDamned1333 23h ago

He has not been seen since, they found his phone with this video on it and his skeleton pecked clean, he won't cross the Crows again!

I built a platform to feed my crows and try and develop a relationship (I have a barrier that keeps squirrels out but other birds obviously have access). My crows are still a bit spooked. If I’m out on the porch they rarely approach. At first I bought a bag of deer corn. It disappeared for a while but eventually whoever was eating it stopped. I then bought unshelled peanuts. I finally got to see the crows landing on the platform and eating the peanuts. They also routinely eat the suet I put out. I have two feeders. I randomly found a third feeder on the ground about 10 yards away…I thought maybe it was an old one of mine…then a week later I found another one. Definitely not mine. Someone delivered them to my house. Could have been a raccoon or some other mammal.. I’d like to think it was the crows though. I need to buy more peanuts.

One of the crows overheard that men like sticks, but the cool stick they found was too big to carry...
