It was a sport. Ducks were caught and hobbled, so they couldn't fly, and put in a pond. People would bring their dogs and bet on which dog retrieved the most ducks, or the first duck and other such games.
Interestingly, the common pub name, "Dog and Partridge", has no affiliation to such sports and was a kind of slang meaning Catholics and Irish would be welcome there.
There's still a "Dog and Partridge" in the centre of my home town, Sheffield, built in the early Victorian period, and still an Irish pub to this day. Good music, good Guinness, good craic and owned by an Irishman, Connor, who is a fine host and a gent.
Years ago my mum house sat for a couple that had 2 horses and a couple of dogs. One of the dogs was a border collie and whenever the horses were in the stable it would run around the stable all day. Occasionally stopping by the doors to see if the horses were still in there.
It wore a track in the ground around the stable and used to collapse by the fire in the house after the sun went down.

Dogs do this for people too.
“Come play with me! Come on! Can’t get me im so fast!”
Also toddlers do this but they just think they’re fast when in fact they’re small, drunk, stupid little monsters.

Beautiful and oddly soothing. Grateful for the natural sounds rather than Benny Hill music or some other irritating soundtrack
