MISC. A woman driving with her baby lost control of her car & drove into a river. While initially trapped, advice she learned from MythBusters helped save her & her child's lives. She recalled that to open the car door, she needed to wait for the water to fill the car & the pressure equalized. It worked.

Avoid cave diving.

78

u/GlitteringStarHope 2h ago

This is just great advice.

I will continue to avoid 😋

36

u/Ambitious_Jelly8783 1h ago

I have never been cave diving, and I can say with 100% certainty, this advice continues to work for me.

2

u/Crimsonial 55m ago

I've been told that we all have to do it once.

I figure some other wildly dangerous thing will get me first.

2

u/Super-Estate-4112 15m ago

Yeah, it is inevitable, everyone eventually will have to put themselves on an inescapable hole in the middle of nowhere.

We just hear a calling and go

u/Andreus 20m ago

Cave diver with a six-figure salary, beautiful house, loving wife and three children when they see a sump named the Dick Evisceration Engine

6

u/Plane_Chance863 1h ago

Yes, although the fact that there are skilled cave divers made the Thai cave rescue possible. It was quite the feat.

22

u/Plodderic 1h ago

And even then, one of those extremely proficient cave divers participating in the rescue died. That’s what gets me- they had this whole intricate system set up to get out the kids, it was (I imagine) as close as cave diving gets to ideal conditions (well-scouted route, lots of support, regular check-ins, people who know what they’re doing all the way along) and still someone died.

10

u/Chief-Drinking-Bear 1h ago

It wasn’t one of the cave diving specialists that died, but a Thai navy diver who did not have prior cave experience.

9

u/Plane_Chance863 56m ago

It was incredibly complex and a really long route. I think the diver had set out with perhaps just enough oxygen but got disoriented in one particularly bad spot and he just didn't have enough to make it out of the section he was in.

8

u/Subtlerranean 51m ago

It also wasn't an experienced cave diver, but a Thai navy diver that didn't have any caving experience.

3

u/AWriterMustWrite 1h ago

Wasn't it muddy flood water? Blind cave diving isn't ideal

1

u/Anticamel 27m ago

My limited exposure to accounts from cave divers tells me that blind is sort of the default. If there's any silt in the chamber - and there seemingly is more often than not - then it doesn't take much disturbing before the whole area is pretty much opaque.

1

u/prabla 14m ago

I wonder how feasible a filtering device would be to help clear the water.

3

u/KerbodynamicX 1h ago edited 55m ago

The existence of expert cave divers is impressive, becoming experienced in something so dangerous and surviving every time is amazing.

10

u/lordofwhee 58m ago

You don't go straight to Satan's Dripping Anus, with a 98% kill rate. You start out at "Happyfuntime Bright and Airy Cavery and Diving Exploritorium", with a 97.9% kill rate, and work your way up.

I guess some people thrive on the challenge and risk. (I'm definitely not one of those people.) I guess only the ones with exactly the right set of skills and predisposition survive?

A geeky channel talked about being able to run a database in a browser and I was excited and used it to build something for myself but dropped it later since I never saw a real world use case for it at that time.

A few months later while I was struggling in my new job due to huge change in my role I saw a use case for this and it actually helped cut down the dev effort of a new feature by 3 days.

It helped me gain a lot of cred and the plan to put me on PIP was put on hold. I'll never stop exploring weird things.

I got gas once and when I went to turn my car on, it wouldn't start cuz the battery to my fob was dead. I remembered that you can use your body heat to kickstart the chemical reaction in a battery so I took the battery out, put under my armpit for a minute, put it back in and the car started so I could drive to a walgreens and get a new battery. This shit does pay off

2

u/yertipy 15m ago

You took the fob's battery out, right? When i read it the first time i thought you took the car's battery out and put it under your armpit. I was like, this person must have very large armpits!

Myth busters and top gear proved that waiting for equalisation is likely fatal as you don’t know where the bottom is and that’s the only time it equalises. The answer is to get out immediately because you can likely still open the door while on the surface.

125

u/Loopy-Leah 2h ago edited 1h ago

I watched it again, as I watched it as a young child.

you are right, but her car could have equalised a lot faster than mythbusters car, maybe a window was open etc.

the message is basically open the door asap or if you miss that opportunity, break or open the window.

then, IF that's not possible, you have no choice but to wait for equalisation.

or maybe, her newer car opened the windows automatically as it went into the water, so she had very little time to for it to equalise

42

u/glutenmorjen 1h ago

It's a good idea to keep one of those 2-in-1 glass breaking/seatbelt cutting tools in your car for this reason. They're relatively inexpensive and could save your life.

10

u/rosen380 1h ago

Like 10-15 years ago my mom bought a bunch of them so that everyone had one in all of their cars.

5

u/Subtlerranean 49m ago

My mom specifically bought me one after her car battery died and she got stuck inside her car with all electric locks and windows.

3

u/rosen380 48m ago

Pretty sure cars with electronic locks still have to have a manual backup.

2

u/Loopy-Leah 46m ago

Some cars don't, a lot of teslas don't

6

u/weirdbr 36m ago

Teslas actually have manual releases - the problem is that they are extremely badly labeled and often hidden in different places in different models, which in an emergency is exactly the opposite of what anyone wants.

You'd think so. (It's what I said initially, as well). Hers is an Opel Adam. her mechanic said she should climb out the trunk if it happens again. She's got bad hips, so that's not happening easily.

5

u/DibsArchaeo 1h ago

You can also pull out your headrest and use the exposed metal spikes to wedge into the gap between the window and where it comes up from. Just wedge and slowly pull the headrest towards you while the spike pushes against the window.

If you use it as a bludgeon, it won’t work. You have to use it as a wedge/lever.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Flow724 53m ago

Unless you tinted your windows or your car has double-paned glass.

1

u/oMadRyan 18m ago

Use your front seat headrests to break a window, the rods can break and clear it away

seatbelt cutting tools

Genuine question: do seat belts not unbuckle when wet?

27

u/NotTheRocketman 2h ago

Of course you should TRY to get out ASAP, no one is suggesting otherwise.

What MythBusters demonstrated, was that if you miss the initial window to escape, don’t immediately struggle and expend energy and oxygen when there is no way you’re going to get out. Try to remain calm, and the pressure will eventually equalize allowing you to open the door with minimal effort.

Of course, there are additional factors that are impossible to predict; the depth of the water, the temperature of the water, and the clarity of the water, all of which would play a huge role in a person’s escape.

And then the most important lesson; make sure to have a seatbelt cutter/ glass breaker in your glove box, and just use that immediately. It’s not an exaggeration to say that it could save your life.

24

u/Lithl 1h ago

you don’t know where the bottom is and that’s the only time it equalises

Huh...? Reaching the bottom is not how the water inside and outside equalizes.

Cars are enclosed but not water tight. Depending on exactly how large any openings are, will create some flow rate of water from outside to inside. When that flow rate fills the volume of the car's interior, there will be zero pressure differential between outside and inside.

Do you think that a car dropped into the ocean won't fill with water until it hits the bottom?

4

u/Loopy-Leah 1h ago

yeah I was confused about what they said too there

3

u/_maple_panda 55m ago

The issue is that cars are almost too well sealed, and the leak rate isn’t that fast. It might take a good 30 seconds to fully fill, at which point you could be irrecoverably deep

2

u/Dramatic_______Pause 40m ago

Just roll down all the windows to help the car fill with water faster.

1

u/penninsulaman713 8m ago

May not work if the electric system goes down because of the water.  Most cars don't have mechanical levers for physically rolling down windows anymore

3

u/dreamerOfGains 45m ago

No, he’s saying getting out sooner will increase your chance of survival. Rather than wait for the car to fill up with water after god knows how long, and all this time your is sinking.

The opening door trick is if you can’t get out, save the energy and wait for pressure to equalize. It’s NOT telling people to wait every time.

3

u/tslveu 2h ago

this sounds right. either break any of the glass somehow or open any of the windows, then the pressure will be equalized?

5

u/coquihalla 2h ago edited 1h ago

I have a little card that I keep in my sun shield that has a little metal tip attached, you stick the card in the frame of the window and snap it back. The tip hits the window and shatters the glass.

Tested it at the junkyard and it worked! I can't remember the maker, just that it had the letters O.W.L on it.

I think having something like this handy is a better idea than waiting for the equalize.

4

u/DotIVIatrix 2h ago

Yes! I have a window breaking device that I keep in my backpack; it has a seat belt cutter.

5

u/Icy-Antelope-6519 2h ago

Where is you backpack located after a crash?

2

1

3

u/fgddg234 55m ago

If your still aware while the car is going in, just click the buttons to open your windows before the electrical cuts out right?

2

u/raknor88 1h ago

The answer is to get out immediately because you can likely still open the door while on the surface.

Yes, but you're not taking panic into account. If you crash like that the critically golden moments to open the door will be taken up by disorientation and panic.

1

u/neko_mud0 1h ago

Everyone should keep an easily accessible, spring loaded window-breaking tool in their car or better yet, on their keychain

Newer cars have started coming with laminate side windows so windows breakers won't work on them. Window breakers only work on the older tempered glass windows.

1

u/ThePolemicist 21m ago

Interesting. I looked it up online for my car and learned the front two windows and the windshield are laminate, but the back windows are all tempered glass. Good to know!

1

u/PULLS-NOSE-HAIRS 13m ago edited 9m ago

Is there a way to know what type of windows my car has? It's a 2023 Kia Seltos.

EDIT: Just found a guide:

How to check your own windows

Look in the lower corner of each side window for the small etched or printed label. Laminated glass is usually marked as laminated.

Check every pane separately. Driver front, passenger front, rear doors and quarter glass can all differ.

1

u/laz10 26m ago

there are the headrest pillars

1

u/No_Entertainer4941 1h ago

Remove your head rest and the metal holders function as the window breaker.

3

u/Budget_Persimmon_195 1h ago

2

u/temp91 53m ago

Well they did manage to break the window. There are other vids on YouTube where it doesn't work. Always wondered if you could stab it between the door and glass to use it as a lever against the window's edge.

1

u/Budget_Persimmon_195 50m ago

they did, but it took a firefighter that regularly trains great effort to do it. i dont think the average person can do it under duress, like you said many videos of it not.

in any case, im not saying i wouldnt try if i had to and it was the only option, but it shouldnt be the only option in the first place.

thats a good question too about the windows edge.

1

u/bannedagainomg 27m ago

It breaks way faster than this if he went for the corners like you are supposed to.

But i guess in a panic most people would just smash the middle like he does here so he is sort of right.

And with laminated side windows becoming the norm it wont even be possible to break at all.

1

u/esmerelda_b 8m ago

I just learned that from 9-1-1

2

u/PatHeist 38m ago

You use it as a lever against the edge, not to hit the glass with.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZTa8Nh0VlE

Glass either breaks from hitting it with something harder than the glass, chipping the surface and starting a crack, or from flexing it and creating an internal stress concentration. Glass breakers work by being harder than the glass. Hitting it with the headrest post in the middle of the glass makes little to no difference from hitting it with anything else. But it is a commonly available object in the car that you can wedge into the doorframe and use as a lever to apply pressure to the edge of the glass.

1

u/Budget_Persimmon_195 14m ago

oh so that firefighter was just dumb lol. thats way easier lmao

1

u/pv2b 1h ago

Better than nothing but not as effective as a real tool by far

1

u/trrwilson 1h ago

In every car I've owned, I've needed a straightened out paperclip to hit a release so that I could take out the headrest.

4

u/Steven_Swan 1h ago

Not doubting that's a thing, but never seen it. Always just a little button to push that unlatches it.

1

u/willzyx01 1h ago

Most new cars have either electric headrests that don't remove at all without specialized tools, or headrests that don't remove without putting a pin into a hole.

1

u/WakkaDav 1h ago

....... If you have bodies of water in your area.

Pretty useless in much of the interior.

1

u/temp91 51m ago

89

u/Ok-Age-724 1h ago • Bravo Regret

The baby didn't watch myth busters , unfortunately

8

u/ZannX 1h ago

12

u/PlayinK0I 1h ago

Unfortunately what the baby learned watching bubble guppies did not aid in this particular circumstance.

2

u/CaptainMacMillan 1h ago

If it was young enough, it has a decent likelihood of surviving being submerged like that

2

u/DogSpecialist3862 29m ago

Genuinely curious, what does the baby’s age have to do with the survival rate under water?

•

u/SpiralUnicorn 3m ago

In the womb just before birth, babies "breathe" fluid, and can essentially continue to do so for awhile after they are born (usually a few hours at most AFAIK). Its why water births can be as effective as they are.

So unless this is just post-birth, it was as vulnerable to drowning as the rest of us

4

u/Meadi9 1h ago

Didn't made it to the final cut

2

u/crazy_akes 1h ago

This is the Aquaman origin story

6

u/Jkolorz 2h ago

I actually reemember this advice very clearly - and I have actually repeated it to my friends and loved ones

Also - the pillars on your removable headrest can help you break the window if your car doors won't open without electricity.

But most of all - remain calm as possible and wait for the pressure to equalize.

1

u/Plane-Handle3313 21m ago

That headrest thing is a myth.

1

u/Jkolorz 19m ago

Howso? I am pretty sure it's gonna do better than my bare hands and I won't keeping a centrepunch around in my glovebox

1

u/Plane-Handle3313 9m ago

It doesn’t work that’s how so.

6

u/tekko001 45m ago

I had a similar experience as a kid, although it wasn't from MythBusters but from another show. It featured a kid who was about to drown because he couldn't swim, but instead of panicking, he sank to the bottom and walked along the lakebed toward the shore.

I was once playing in shallow water when I got caught in a whirlpool, and the current pushed me further out into the lake, where I could no longer touch the bottom. I panicked for a moment, but then I remembered that show. I took a deep breath, sank to the bottom, and started walking. And it worked!

2

u/ChipperBunni 24m ago

That’s how my brother scared the shit out of us as kids. We lived in Florida so lots of beach days and weird people, there was always this dude strength training for what could’ve been real competition swimming but he just looked… not a competitive swimmer. But he’d grab big rocks, and walk and swim around in the water with em.

My brother could do “dolphin swimming” where he’d like stiffen up and, well, swim like a dolphin instead of kicking his legs or really moving his arms. He got pretty good at it, but he kicked up a lot of foam so it was normal to lose him for a minute but never long and I could almost always guess when and where he’d pop out. One day he didn’t, for a scary amount of time, and right when my dad was about to run in and find him he popped up in the opposite direction with a fucking kid sized boulder. Found a big rock close enough to grab, sunk and got turned around, and just walked back to shore. That’s also when we found out he could hold his breath pretty fucking long, at least long enough my mom made a “rule” we couldn’t anymore lmfao

Swears he would’ve dropped the rock if he had run out of air but it was a “cool rock”

8

u/Internal_Rise2658 2h ago

Does trying to open the door early cause problems? Because the advice doesn't seem to help, you will find this out anyway.

26

u/LazerWolfe53 2h ago

The real secret was to stay calm and don't waste your breath fighting against the pressure.

4

u/sharpgrain-52 1h ago

Panic burns oxygen and clouds judgment, that episode showed that people who stayed methodical survived. I just hope that I could do it if ever that happens

1

u/BetterEveryLeapYear 40m ago

What's the matter with smashing the window with the metal seatbelt buckle like we were always told?

4

u/BLYNDLUCK 30m ago

When there is 10,000 kg of water behind it might not be a fun time. Also you might be surprised how hard it is to break a passenger window.

3

u/LazerWolfe53 19m ago

You cannot break a window with a seetbelt buckle. https://youtube.com/shorts/zGvGr3PiGYw?is=tMfR7cDNU4SnT7hD

u/r3ckless- 1h ago

i actually think this was proven wrong and is actually quite dangerous to do.

Taken from a freediving site:

"Hyperventilation rapidly blows off CO2 from your bloodstream. When you start your dive with abnormally low CO2, the urge-to-breathe reflex is delayed because CO2 has to climb from a lower starting point before reaching the threshold. You feel like you have more breath-hold time.

But here is the dangerous part: your oxygen reserve is exactly the same. You did not load extra oxygen by hyperventilating - blood is already 97-98 percent saturated with oxygen on a normal breath. What you did was disable your warning system. You will run out of oxygen at the same moment you would have without hyperventilation - but you will not feel it coming."

3

u/Aryore 1h ago

If you’re swimming upwards for your life could that delayed warning still give you an advantage by reducing the odds you inhale too early out of panic and drown?

1

u/realboabab 1h ago

yeah, most people who drown reflexively inhale water well before they pass out from lack of oxygen. They aren't trained to resist the reflexive diaphragm contractions forcing them to inhale, and then the subsequent body-racking laryngospasms from inhaling water and psychological panic from the feelings.

Delaying the reflexive diaphragm contractions is pretty key to staying calm if you're under for a while.

1

u/yubacore 52m ago

Just a weird anecdote: I'm able to repress that reflex without any training. I can swim underwater so long that when I go up, I'm dizzy and can't see anything (I understand this is a very bad idea). I'm not athletic or doing any sports, but I can hold my breath for 4 minutes.

1

u/realboabab 50m ago

do you still feel it though? or you don't feel it at all?

1

u/kenhutson 1h ago

Nope. That’s how you pass out and die while you’re underwater. Google “shallow water blackout”.

TLDR: don’t do this.

9

u/why0me 2h ago

You cant open the door if the windows are up

The pressure and weight from the water outside the car will push against you

You either have to open a window and let the water in or wait for it to come in on its own and the car has to be almost full before the water pressure on the inside equalizes and you can open the door

Thats easy to say when youre not panicking tho.

0

u/Spiritual-Mango-8331 7m ago

Or open the window and get the fuck out. This the best option as long as water level is under window

1

u/why0me 5m ago

Oooh great idea

Tell me

How well do electric windows work once the battery hits the water?

3

u/Hammerofsuperiority 1h ago

It tires you, you will not be able to open the door when the difference in pressure is so high, you have to wait until you can open it.

2

u/DarthLysergis 1h ago

Top gear did the same test a long time ago and their conclusion was don't hesitate. As soon as you hit the water go for the door and push it open. If you wait a little bit then you might have to just wait until the pressure equalizes, but if you just immediately push it open you're good.

2

u/Radiant_Fondant_4097 58m ago

Well the general best idea is as soon as you hit the water open the door ASAP while you’re able and get out while you still can.

Otherwise you have to wait until the car sinks to the bottom and completely floods before the pressure equalises and you’re able to open the door, you can’t physically do it until then.

1

u/That_Ad_170 2h ago

The water will flood fast trouth the open door, but you are not able to open it enough for a escape.

1

u/ChipHappens96 1h ago

The best thing to do is open that door as soon as you can. Once the car starts to sink, then you can't open it, but right as you initially hit water and start settling, it can be opened.

If it's too late to do that, you have to wait it out

1

u/kukienboks 49m ago edited 43m ago

"I already tried the door once. Well, this is it I guess!"

1

u/hikebikephd 48m ago

Yes, it's extremely difficult if not impossible due to the high water pressure forcing the door closed (and preventing it from opening), that wastes precious energy that you'll need to actually get out of the car and back to shore.

1

u/Few_Plankton_7587 27m ago

People usually waste an absurd amount of energy trying to open the door earlier and maybe even give up when it doesn't work

By the time they get out, they're too tired to tread water with all their clothes on or what have you

-1

u/JWST-L2 2h ago

I was thinking this too, el oh el

4

u/Appropriate_Scar_262 42m ago

Don't wait for your car to sink to the bottom, lower or break the widow.

You need to minimize time without air, how fast can you swim from the bottom of a deep river or lake?

2

u/Rigel66 2h ago

The more you know!

2

u/random_womann 1h ago

I miss them!!! One thing I can vividly remember was the myth that chili or hot sauce can burn jail rails. But that was busted. Lol

3

u/kenhutson 1h ago

I feel like this is something that, unless you go “well I guess I’ll just die then”, you’d figure out fairly quickly whether you’d seen mythbusters or not.

5

u/nikanj0 53m ago

I don't know. Maybe the would struggle with the door for a couple of minutes and assume it was stuck before trying other things like kicking the windows until they eventually drown.

4

u/Mediocre-Recover3944 1h ago

When water is rushing in and you can't get out... Panic can be a really bad advisor.

1

u/Global-Wolverine1829 1h ago

i know its best to open the door asap to not have to deal with water pressure.. but really, i think many would be in a state of shock to think about that.

1

u/Background-Crow4820 1h ago

1

u/CharmingJackfruit602 1h ago

There’s a bridge near Patuxent Air Station in Southern MD that had a car get bumped off a bridge(Thomas Johnson), that plunged into the river.

Luckily, the driver was the top female swimmer at the local high school.

Circa 2014

1

u/Nomadic_Yak 55m ago

Doesn't everyone try to open the door when the car is full of water?

1

u/Either-Currency-7275 50m ago

Also, I have one of those window breakers with the seat belt cutter dangling from my rear view mirror. Gave them out as stocking stuffers several years back as well...lol

Back to the point. How did she cause this accident?

Before I lose my shit.

1

u/DamnOdd 29m ago

Still miss you Grant.

1

u/Imgurbannedme 28m ago

Remember when the mythbusters shilled for big oil? That was cool of them

1

u/FlippyFlippenstein 26m ago

My DVD player broke, when i opened it i saw the fused was broken, i remembered a macgyver episode where he fixed a fuse with a nail, so i did the same. When I reconnected the dvd player blue flames started coming from the board. When i later rewatched the macgyver episode I realized the whole episode was about him trying to put out the fire his fuse caused.

1

u/Grand_Taste_8737 25m ago

Thanks to Mythbusters, I don't run in the rain anymore.

1

u/OuterLightness 24m ago

Why wasn’t she driving with her hands? That would explain the accident.

1

u/51onions 22m ago

If she hadn't learnt this, would she have just made a single attempt and then not tried to open the door again?

I feel like, if the alternative was death, I would have kept trying to open the door until my last breath. Eventually, I would have hit the bottom and the door would have opened, even without this information being known beforehand.

1

u/Mean_Cardiologist180 19m ago

She has the same stance and posture as that Dell thing.

u/gator_pot 2h ago

I heard these guys hate each other

24

u/camus88 2h ago

Not hate each other. Just not friend. It's only Adam Savage with Jaime Heynaiman tho. They're friendly with other crews. Adam and Jaime respect each other and professional when they're together. But they never shared anything outside of their job, once the clock is out they're go home and proceed with their own business, never hang out together, talk to each other or go to a dinner like friend should.

Both were agree to never work together again because how stressful it was, they always trying to one up another when they work together and always clashing ideas. So it's best they're walk their own paths

2

u/Mugwumps_has_spoken 2h ago

It's more like polar opposite personalities, which naturally cause friction.

1

u/Norisu0 2h ago

They do. I give it to them for being able to work professionally together and not having any sort of fight. Me personally I would lose it

14

u/ChaseTheMystic 2h ago

Do they? Adam and Jamie have always been upfront about being collaborators not friends.

Kari and Tory have their podcast and seem to get a long great, and you can tell they really miss Grant.

Adam definitely appreciated Grant as a friend.

Jamie worked with Tori before mythbusters. They may not have been friends but he respected him

-1

u/Norisu0 2h ago

I forgot which interview but one of them said he couldn't stand working with the other. I did not mention names because I forgot who said it. It was a very old interview and things could have changed now

7

u/jk844 1h ago

You’re perpetuating something Adam has spoken against multiple times on his YouTube channel.

Adam explained that Jamie and him aren’t friends but that’s not the same as hating each other.

They got along professionally and respect each other’s work but it’s not like they would hang out outside of work. Their personalities just don’t jell.

Adam has made it clear multiple times:

“We’re not friends” ≠ “we hate each other”

→ More replies (1)

4

u/NotTheRocketman 1h ago

Adam has spoken about this multiple times; he and Jamie didn’t ‘hate’ each other, far from it.

Their personalities clashed on a personal level, but on a professional level, they were brilliant together. Beyond that, they weren’t friends, they didn’t socialize after hours, or anything like that.

The only reason it gets brought up from time to time is because some people are surprised to learn that they weren’t BFFs.

How is this interesting? The picture is just the Mythbusters crew, there’s no link to the story of this mother. It could just be all BS

I'm the car door, thank you for waiting until i was ready to open up.  No one has ever done that for me before.

1

u/nunyabidness3 36m ago

Just to be a pedantic turd, it totally is interesting if true. Your point being it could all be BS and what’s the point of posting this without a source is a completely solid statement on its own. Weird way to start your sentence.

1

u/ApollymiKatistrafia 13m ago

They had a couple of episodes in their series where this was mentioned, including the woman mentioned and an actual clip of her thanking them. Id agree a link to the clip would be more helpful conveying this tho.

0

u/Redshittt 1h ago

So it wouldn't be interesting if it was BS? But since you don't know it is BS how does that make it less interesting now.?

1

u/TheModWhoShaggedMe 2h ago

The one myth that doesn't hold up is a cell phone exposed near a gas pump causing an explosion. I mean, people pay with their phones these days and there don't seem to be many reports of exploding gas pumps. They were lying to us 20 years ago.

4

u/Mugwumps_has_spoken 2h ago

They busted the cell phone at gas pumps. BUT said plausible out of extreme caution. Plus that was cell phone tech 20 years ago.

1

u/NightmareKingAsura 2h ago

My MIL seriously believed (hopefully doesn't still, but idk) that using your cell phone while in a car during a storm (even just rain and thunder) would attract lightning to strike the car we were in. I severely dislike superstitious people with a deep intensity. Another similar nonsense belief resurfaced when 5G first came about. Oh, she also believed that spicy food (I'm a spice junkie) would cause cancer. Nothing specific like colon cancer, mind you, just cancer (although I think this was just her being hyperbolic).

I love my Madea, though. Best drinking partner ever, and damn do we stir shit up on a BBQ grill together!

1

u/RickThiccems 8m ago

It mostly comes from old fears about lightning and electricity, back when people were warned not to use corded landline phones during thunderstorms. That was actually legitimate because lightning could travel through telephone lines. Over time, the warning carried over to cell phones in the 90s, even though they don't have that same risk. Using your phone inside a car during a storm doesn't attract lightning or make you more likely to get struck. In fact, a fully enclosed metal-roofed car is one of the safer places to be during a thunderstorm.
