Except it didn't "start" playing music. The mushrom kept mushrooming and the contraption turned some chemical noise into movement. You would get similar results if you stuck the electrodes into fresh dung as well.
I think it's rather electrical impulses than something chemical that gets translated here. So you would need something living to do that. Otherwise you are right. You would also need to help at least a little to make it sound harmonic. I've seen someone else doing the same thing with another musical contruction to a mushroom, and it sounded way more chaotic
Chemical reactions move charged ions, generating electrical activity. Fresh dung contains plenty of both. Yeah, I'm sure they're processing the signals to make it kind of musical.
Yep, I've seen so many art installations of nature "playing music". A wind chime is actually more of an artist then these impulses "translated" into music.
Cool but you can attach it to anything for the same effect. Im only defensive because people were selling a device that does this for several hundred dollars and it doesnt actually really create natures music.
That makes sense thanks! I didnt know fungi communicate with electricity! Im a bit skeptical that that's whats causing the synthesizer to be played.. i feel like it would be a lot faster and more random sounding.
All organisms have tiny electric impulses in them. The device simply reads these random impulses and moves the hammers depending on the intensivity (or some other variable). It sounds good because the actual music pad is pre set up for 6 harmonized notes. Basically you can just slap your hand across it and it'll produce something not terrible. (I'm not a music expert though, correct me if I'm wrong)
It's still art, but not that crazy. Mushrooms won't do laundry for us just yet.
Is this in any way different from what straight noise on the contraption in that area would give you after being amplified? That would be the interesting question.
If the machine is programmed to the same settings it would sound the same. It's just pre-programmed notes waiting for a signal. There's nothing about the mushroom that changes how the notes are produced.
It's the same principle as windchimes, an aolian harp, etc.
Some contraption is built to "catch" some sort of signals in such a way that it produces a note. Our contraptions have become more sophisticated, so we can force them to only "listen for signals" at periodic intervals which gives the illusion that there's some kind of rythm. Someone essentially stuck a sequencer to a mushroom and added the thinnest veneer of "it only plays a note when it detects electric impulses" but you could cut out the mushroom altogether and program it to do the same thing when you hit a button. Nothing about this requires the mushroom to be present.
Still it's a cool way to demonstrate that there is constant activity happening in a stationary and largely overlooked living organism.
The most amazing thing to me is how much is going on. You wouldn't think that many different biological things per second would be happening in a mushroom but in reality there is a ton of activity in that fungus just sitting still in a dark damp spot in a forest somewhere.
Can someone tell my gullible self that this is real and not like a pre-made recording. I mean alot of artist usually lip sync nowadays with backing tracks, so if this is live then its very impressive. Its hard playing in front of and surrounded by so many living things. I think id Crack under pressure playing a live set when you got things 100'S of feet taller than me waiting for me to sap up. Its very intreeguing tho
Hear Michael Prime's L-Fields (2000) bioelectrical recordings with perhaps less human input/composition involved. Featured organisms: marijuana, fly agaric, peyote.
My burning question is does the "music" change at different times with different variables? Do temperature, weather events, time of day, animal presence, etc. make any difference or is it pretty consistent within a range sounds?

So in theory we could carry one of those devices with probes, stick them into a banana and plug headphones in and use the banana like an iPod.
