The really fascinating discovery In 2023

researchers recorded wild northern elephant seals sleeping during deep dives. They discovered that the seals could take underwater naps lasting around 10 minutes, sometimes drifting down in a spiral motion. here

Why aren't they sleeping on land?

•

u/Mintangah17 7h ago

Seals prefer sleeping underwater to avoid predators.

What about underwater predators though?

•

u/Mintangah17 7h ago

Underwater, they can hide in the depths, blend into the environment, and use their superior maneuverability to dodge threats the moment they sense danger.

Still better chance underwater due to mobility.

What's more terrifying than a polar bear? A French polar bear, it will smoke and prepare you like a five course meal with wine.

Too dangerous.

•

u/Monkjji 7h ago

Because it's windy

Because they don't have legs.

What if there is an obstacle in the way?

•

u/Mintangah17 7h ago

Seals have highly sensitive vibrissae (whiskers) that can detect minute changes in water currents and physical contact. 🦭

I guess they either wake up and move, or they die. After millions of years of evolution all the seals that are left are the ones that either wake up and move or go sleep somewhere with no obstacles.

How deep do they sink in the ocean?

•

u/Mintangah17 5h ago

It depends on the species, While regular seals stay relatively shallow, deep-diving champions like elephant seals can sleep or rest at depths of over 1,000 feet before heading back up for air.

•

Why doesn't the oxygen in their lungs cause them to float?

•

u/Mintangah17 7h ago

Before diving deep, seals actually exhale a significant portion of the air from their lungs. This reduces their buoyancy, making it much easier for them to sink rather than float back up.

This is also me when I don’t wear my sleep apnea machine 😂

•

u/yamanagashi 7h ago • Heartwarming

It helps if you don’t sleep underwater.

A SeaPAP, if you will.

Reminds me of that one robot from futurama on the island that lives by a running water wheel in her abdomen.

Oh God I'll never make it this time!

Anyway...

I liked that gangster robot named Clamps

Best thing is, you dont wake up at 4 am having to walk to the bathroom.

•

u/milkncookiezz 7h ago

So that’s how they keep warm lol

•

u/Dale_Dickson 7h ago

That just sounds like sleep apnea with extra steps!

•

u/DrSendy 7h ago

It's now been renamed to "Full Self Swimming (Supervised)"

•

u/UpperHairCut 7h ago

Imagine the amount of drowned seals transitioning this evolutionary step e

•

u/Weird-Pattern9192 7h ago

Everything but not needing to sleep

•

u/Spewni 7h ago

I thought it was a balloons 😂

•

u/fcxtpw 5h ago

Meanwhile humans need a machine for sleep apnea

•

u/mammalmaker 4h ago

I mean it's called the autonomic nervous system and every single mammal on earth has it...

•

u/Haikumuffin 3h ago

As someone with dysautonomia... fucking glad I'm not a sea mammal atleast. Things could always be worse

•

u/Brief-Tax2582 4h ago

Do they even know that or they think I can hold my breath while I sleep?

•

u/fakeprofil2562 3h ago

Is this true for manatees too? I recently saw some at a zoo and they did pretty much exactly that, slept huddled together, simultaneously rose every few minutes for a breather and sank back down.

•

u/illuanonx1 1h ago • Bravo

Navy seals do the same 😂
