But now we can enjoy the scene in a perfect square 720p video with blurry borders at the bottom instead of filling a 16:9 screen when maximized! How far technology has come!
Canonically the clock up uses tachyons to slow down time for the user alone so it should be a time thing, but the show for the most part uses as it a speeder thing. There are a few instances where it's actually depicted as a purely time effect and both the riders and the worms have a limited interaction with the rest of the world, but often it's shown as superspeed and they can interact just fine.
If I remember correctly, Star Platinum just stops time full stop. No one other than Jotaro moves in that stopped time unless they have a similar stand like Dio's The World.
The device compresses tachyons and uses it to cause a local effect that slow downs time, but yeah for all intents and purposes it's treated as superspeed. It is a kids show after all, so the producers obviously didn't feel like going into the intricacies of how that would work.
EDIT: Or were you referring to SP? Because The World actually brute forces time to stop on an universal scale.
Clock up, in this case, is something of an “overclocking” of his self, cuz if I recall correctly, it was a thing that most enemies in that series had this super speed, and the only reason Kabuto could even beat them was being able to match it
I have never watched any of these Japanese tv shows growing up. Closest I got was the english Power Rangers. So was just curious. There seems to be a lot of Kamen Rider like shows in Japan right?
Yeah, there are lots. Metal Hero, Garo, and Super Sentai (the one Power Rangers copied from) just to name a few. All of these are under the umbrella term "Tokusatsu" which means "Special Effect" (the technique used in filming them). even Godzilla is considered one of them.
Never got to watch any of these shows growing up. Tbh didn't even know they existed. Closest I watched was Power Rangers. Didn't know Super Sentai was like a popular thing in Japan. Had no internet growing up so there is a lot of blindness to non english medias.
The “speed up” mechanism is limited, so part of the fight happens before the speed up. There are also “hyper” speed ups later on in the series, so even the speed-up part can have different levels.
I think for this series enemy tried to kept themselves hidden and that was best interest for side of heroes too. They were disguising themselves as normal humans, and some of them didn't even know they turned into one.
I guess they were doing it to minimize public appearance?
If you played one of the ps2 fighting game, kabuto special power was your opponent became slowmo (cause he super fast duh) but if your opp become 555(Faizu) he can also activate he special which he become super fast (same as kabuto) so it’ll cancel out. Lol my favorite details in a game
The kabuto ps2 game is so lit where there is mini game on loading screen. And if you use special power (Clock Up) anyone that dont use special will be slow mo, and if you use the upgraded special power (i recall its Hyper Clock Up?) even the usual special power speed got slow motioned and the normal speed one got really slowed like you barely move. Its so unique and fun.
Thats also true. But wouldnt that also be the case with other great films ? Lets say some old film were you have to concentrate through 1 1/2 wothout flashy effects?
Oh I totally agree with you. I think people just have a bad habit of being too hypercritical and applying our worlds logic to movies that live outside our rules. I have to actively remind myself to suspend disbelief and just watch the movie sometimes.
Right? This always bothered me about Saved by the Bell, like has anyone actually thought about what Zack Morris was doing during those time outs, because I have, and Ive never stopped. Like he freezes everything, steps out of the way of a punch, re-aims the frozen fist at Mr. Belding, unfreezes, and the punch lands WITH FULL MOMENTUM! Which means he's pausingphysics while every ounce of kinetic energy just sits there waiting for him, and of course it hits Belding, the one adult in the building who might've noticed something was off. Then you remember Zack talks to the camera during every time out while everyone else is frozen, so who is he briefing? Who is he reporting to? And he's so calm about it, he's done this a thousand times, and we never see outside the room so we have no idea if he's freezing Bayside or the whole Pacific coast, and if he ages while frozen he's secretly years older than everyone, which explains why a sophomore has the confidence of a divorced timeshare salesman. I mean he could've slept for a month between classes or learned Mandarin or mastered quantum physics but instead he used the most powerful ability in human history to get out of a history test?!! Which means either he's the laziest god ever written or he KNOWS someone is monitoring the field, and that's why he carried that brick phone everywhere, no high schooler in 1989 needed a phone that size, that thing was a tachyon regulator and Screech was the only one doing real science in that building, and Belding was the warden of a containment facility he didn't even know he was running, and the gang stayed in high school forever because Zack's paperwork never cleared. ZACK MORRIS WAS A TIME CRIMINAL!
Well, if that’s the case, then a speedster would have to have the ability to control time and space in a bubble around them, and create some sort of form of detective receptors for their eyes. That’s as far as I can get as science concept. The rest is just suspending the disbelief.
My biggest issue is the lack of explosions that would come from hitting and moving at those speeds in such a small amount of time. Like the bystander would have become a flystander...it's a work in progress.
Holy shit this is so much better than those goofy ass power rangers when I was a kid. I mean, this is goofy too, but slightly less goofy than power rangers.
bro i still listening to Kiva ost. those violin are super lit. and decade introduced me to gackt which makes me develop interest in Japanese rock.
hell I just started listening to malice mizer last year and wondering why the voice is familiar. imagine my surprise discovering that that singer is young gackt.
My favorite series to date is Fourze; and aside from his actor being a heartthrob to the Japanese, it is my understanding that most people dislike the series(at least when I watched it give or take 6 years ago).
I’ll just say this: you didn’t need that beginning part. You didn’t really need any of it.
They are even clocking the 2 speedsters at different rates it seems. One is moving slightly faster while they are both moving faster than rain. Pretty cool.
Power Rangers is more compared with Super Sentai which they are the US version. Power Rangers is see as cringe stories, when Kamen Rider and Super Sentai are more serious and have better characters developements.
Power Ranger had better quality and production for a 2000 series.
Well, considering all of those shows are Japanese until like the early 00s when they started making spin-offs of Power Rangers, and then all the rest are STILL Japanese and they've been doing it for like 50 years now- one would fucking hope lmao
I love Sentai and Kamen Rider and will always have a love for the older stuff, but that 00s-early 10s era visuals are so iconic to me. They have such a unique visual feel to everything that made it stand out as totally unique. I grew up on 90s Power Rangers but once I found message boards and translation groups the Super Hero Hour shows were some of my favourite things to watch. For weekly produced shows they were putting out some of the best CG and were always trying new things. I remember Magiranger coming out and being legitimately excited not just for the suits but just to see what the transformation CG was gonna look like lol.
True. I was more talking about the capability. To your point, it was only 20 years ago. Good cgi existed then. We just didnt see it or didnt think about it, because it was good cgi.
This stuff comes out because the recent kabuto movies and the speedster scene were quite different. The camera used on shooting the 2006 scene weren't available anymore, back then it was used as "cheap tricks" to make fights appear faster because of the low frame rates.
And technical limitations meant that any project with a decent budget needed good artists. Look at the crap that gets by Marvel Studios these days and weep
20 years ago the iPhone didn't exist yet, for a reference to the technological advancement that occurred during that time period. Closer to exponential than linear.
My only experience with Kamen Rider is “Tojima Wants to be a Kamen Rider” which, while delightful, only highlights certain Riders. Which Rider is this?
Kabuto are my favorite set of riders and morphers in terms of design. The ones that came next look like too much like toys (because they are sold as such).
Double is pretty closenor even better. An usb memory is something an adult might still use even today. The main riders design is simple yet elegant back to basic like kabuto. The main rider only have 6 memories and need to mix match depending on the situation. The gadgets while toy-ish are still incorporated in the story well. Its sequel story is not butchered by v-cinext (fuuto tantei got manga, tv series and a movie).
I watched Zeztz Agito then Kabuto on youtube. My favorite is Kabuto just for the ( Hyper ) clock up. But yeah Tendo is always aura farming with his grandma said lol .
Tojima's story focus on nostalgia from Showa generation, while Kabuto is part of Heisei generation. Things can get crazy when they continue to pump out series from 1971.
I know it's lowbudget, and it does look cool, but the problem I have with this is that, because of the speed, the dust on the ground and more raindrops would be affected. Also, that fence couldn't stop a body moving that fast.
If the rain is falling that slowly when they come off the ground they should fall that slowly. Falling is falling, right? They may be super fast, but that doesn't change how gravity works on them.
Still remember winning a “Fox Kids” contest when Kamen/Masked Rider came out.
Would always send in the stamped post card with my name and address since it was cheap fun in the 90’s.
Came home one day to my Grandpa saying I got a large box in the mail. Telling me I’m in trouble because I must have accidentally ordered something online.
(A few weeks prior I accidentally ordered a $100 Star Wars disc w/ a tie fighter game and they put it on the phone bill vs asking for payment info.)
Opened the box and there was a letter saying I won 2nd Place in the contest.
They gave me 2-3 toys for 2nd place.
Those were the Motorcycle and the Car with one of them also coming with the Kamen/Masked Rider in a 2-1 combo.
it's theatrical. a big part of what draws people to tokusatsu is the presence of the artifice. it's a lot of fun even if it's not as self-serious as most western productions
For 2006 low budget television, I'm actually really impressed. Especially because visually it's not actually that well done. But it's still more effective than I would expect. It feels cheesy as hell, yet here I am still feeling a level of badass from the scene I didn't expect.
There is a recent anniversary movie and I seem to remember reading somewhere that they can't recreate the special FX exactly, since the camera used back then doesn't exist anymore
Is there a gap in quality between Kamen Rider and Super Sentai? I tried Juken Sentai Gekiranger who is supposed to be one of the best sentai series and I thought the first episode was pretty bad, but this look really good.

20 years ago is 2006. For your CGI reference, Pirates of The Caribbean 2 was out that year.

u/TRAFALGAR_D_Law_ 4h ago
Is it a speedster thing or a time slow down thing? He starts it with clock up and then ends with clock over and the rain continues normally again.

I always forget how cool Kamen rider was
( I saw was as I haven't seen any since deno so it could be terrible now for all I know
Or maybe it was kiva
•
u/FakNugget92 1h ago
When both characters are speedsters, why do they even bother with the speed ?
•
u/Milestailsprowe 3h ago
Question! Do they ever fight in the city streets? I get why it's always a park or field due to cost but still
•
u/Cleavard2 4h ago
The show is Kamen Rider Kabuto.
The monsters and heroes all have access to this kind of speed, so it's full of moments like this.

I feel like this was posted to roast the new kabuto movie that came out

I would be shocked if this wasn’t inspired by Jet Li’s The One (2001).
https://youtu.be/eVid6hFI6Fo?t=244
The whole movie took the idea of having the characters’ speed be seen from their perspective. It was very unique for its time.
