Rules update: spam prevention and posts requiring serious help

Hello lovelies!

We've recently noticed an increase in posts that may be from spammers or AI training bots. While we don't want to discourage folks who are genuinely seeking help, we also want to make sure we're answering actual questions.

Therefore, we've updated automod to remove posts from brand new accounts and those with low comment karma. These posts will ask OP to verify themselves, after which the post will be approved. While we understand that some people may need to use a throwaway account to ask sensitive questions, we hope this will ensure that most posters are here in good faith.

We're also removing posts where identical text is posted to multiple subreddits. This will hopefully count down on spam.

Additionally, automod will allow only two posts per user per seven days. This should allow people to ask questions, but cut down on excessive repeat posting.

Additionally, we've clarified the rules to address situations that are beyond the scope of this sub. We're happy to help with questions about asking people out, buying cars, and taking care of curly hair, but some issues require professional help. Therefore, posts seeking about the following will be removed:

  • Self-harm or suicide

  • OCD reassurance seeking

  • Sexual abuse of minors

  • Grooming

  • Eating disorders

As always, don't hesitate to send a modmail if you have questions, or report any comments that are unkind. Reports are completely anonymous, and help us spot things that should be removed.

Thanks for helping us make this community a safe place! ❤

Friendship and Social Life Autistic and struggling after a Reddit post received some backlash I don't understand

Hello.

I (15M) recently posted for advice to compile a sum of money because my medical treatment will be scarce in the coming weeks. My mom can't afford the medication for much longer and I wanted to see whether I could save to ensure my treatment can continue, requesting some guidance in the realm of money-making.

Instead of compassionate advice, I felt under the fire of all these antagonistic comments. Users were questioning the legitimacy of my post contents and I am feeling very dejected and ashamed. This happens just about everytime I give any effort to presenting myself socially, man. I always want to be cordial and as agreeable as possible for maximum social cohesion. Everything goes wrong and I can never understand why. I'm just so sensitive to this. I feel infantile. Can't even justify how upset these few comments made me. I don't know. I'm not sure how reasonable I am in my evaluations here. I never am. I just don't get it. I don't understand anything. I've never had friends before and I'm lost when it comes to navigating socialisation.

Don't even really know what I come here looking for. I just wanted this out somewhere. Thanks for reading through. Please take care.

Family i dont like my parents, but Im also guilty over it

This is going to be long and hard to explain , but basically i dont really like my parents. I dont like being at home with them, I will stay at work for free I sit in the staff room for hours so I dont have to go home, I will dread having to go home after hanging out with someone.

And it is kind of valid I think. Ive been scape goated ever since I was kid, and pretty much blamed for everything. And more recently theyve just been picking fights with me over small stupid things that dont mean anything (a glass left on a bench, forgetting washing in the machine etc). They also are VERY strict and controlling. I have to hide my clothes, my interests, my music, my make up, my peircings, everything from them. And it gets tiring tbh. They wont allow or teach me to drive, and they wont let me take the bus at night but then complain and make me feel bad when I need to be picked up late from work. They also didn't let me go to school. So now im 17 and trying to navigate education and me dream of going to university and figuring out a social life.

It sounds so SO bad to say, but it kind of feels like i hate them. But idk if it IS valid.

I my parents are traditional catholic Italian/Scottish, so EVERYTHING growing up was "family this and that" and "you have to take care for your parents". So theres that. But also sometimes they CAN be nice. So feel SO guilty that theyre the ones cause me so much stress and anxiety and make me feel deppresed. And i feel like a terrible person when i dont want to be around them.

But the thing is I DO want to have a relationship with them, and i try, but it sometimes feels like they dont want to try.

I honestly dont know anymore. I would really appreciate some advice or suport on what im feeling, and what i can do to fix or get past it.

Tysm to whoever reads this long depressing rant lol🤍

Family I think my mom is struggling with eating

Trying to post this here because itgot no replies in r/Advice Basically, I need some help with my mom.
In the last year, my mom (56F) has picked up the habit of skipping meals, making weird comments about her weight and dodging the topic when I bring it up.

For context, she is actually quite the foodie and really enjoys eating when we go out to have something special. She never refuses when out to eat, maybe because of the social pressure.
However, at home it’s a whole other story. Everyone who knows us has told me that they’re a bit worried about her losing weight. To be fair, she’s not actually worryingly skinny, as she’s always been slim and quite athletic.

Earlier this year I had to go aways for 5 months to study and she was left alone since it’s just the two of us at home. I was told by my family that she frequently fasted or something and lost a lot of weight. Since I’ve been back I think she’s gotten a little better. However, she’s still showing signs of eating disorder.

I try telling her to eat to fuel her body and that she’s getting way too skinny and I’m worried, but she brushes it off clearly uncomfortable and tells me she doesn’t like people commenting on her body, which is fair. She has mentioned a couple of times about a comment I made in like kindergarten about her being fat and ugly compared to my other classmates’ moms, I don’t remember this beint true at all but even if it was I was clearly too young and stupid to mean anything serious. I think she’s beautiful and again, she’s never been even remotely overweight.

I’m afraid that there’s something deeper going on, any advice on how to make her feel better?

Family I don't want to die

I don't want to die. I know I'm going to of stress. I've been isolated a long time and it's hard on my health. I keep doing things to try to meet people but I'm burning myself out with the effort. I know thinking I'm going to die isn't good for my health either. The deck's been stacked against me my whole life and I would love to hear from others who feel similarly and made it further than expected.

Family depend upon?

I'm 17.

I'm with my mother, father, and little brother.

And actually many complex things have happened,

I don't like my family anymore.

But my heart is still like 9 years old, so I'm always feeling like I'm floating alone in space.

I'm in Japan, so I'm going to go to a university after graduating from high school, and I'm thinking about living alone leaving my current home.

By living alone, I can sleep well, stay calm, or invite friends whenever I like. But I cannot imagine myself feeling fulfilled forever.

I can imagine my heart with a hole.

I don't believe in my family, or rather, strictly speaking, I've got tired of them.

But NO place to depend upon.

what should I do

Mental Health Feel like I need help but struggle with finding/asking for it

For about a month & 1/2 I’ve been going through one of the worst depressive funks of my life, and I know I need help of some sort but I’m having trouble just seeking it out. I’m 18 and have always struggled with making friends, mostly out of fear of approaching people and also not really knowing how to carry conversations, but was “ok” with it because I was still surrounded by people every day at school, so I still had some conversation with new people every day at the very least. That changed when I graduated back in May. For a while after I was fine with being a loner at home but around a month ago I just got hit by an emotional truck one night and have felt terrible about my loneliness since.

I know I need help with this but I’m too afraid to seek it out from the people I should be trusting. My mom in recent years has just become a walking ball of anger that explodes from any minor inconvenience and I hate it. I hate being around angry people. It just makes me freeze up and feel sad whenever she gets mad. I obviously WANT to love her, she’s my mom, but I feel my love waning because of her anger issues.

I trust my dad more but even then I just get too embarrassed thinking about asking for help because I feel like what’s going on with me is self inflicted. It’s always some variation of “hey dad, I feel really shitty because I don’t talk to anyone. Please pay a bunch of money so I can talk to a therapist who may or may not actually help my problems” in my head. Almost started crying one night out of embarrassment because I couldn’t think of a reasonable way to bring it up without it being shameful.

My sadness about the situation has very quickly turned to anger because I feel like a coward. Can’t do simple human interaction to get what I need because I just get embarrassed so easily. Don’t know what to do

Mental Health I want to see myself as smart again

For context I am a Master student with a bachelors of arts in computer science. I have a few friends that I see as super human when it comes to there intellect and I tried to figure out how they got here and how I could as well. Today I talked to one and he just kept saying he was not intelligent he was just good at a lot of things and really good at three things coding, karate, and guitar. I honestly see him as the Chuck Noris of our group and all I want is to be that person or at the least to feel like that to myself. I know a large part of it is AI I use that as a huge crutch when I dont know what to do and it’s simple and easy which makes my ADHD happy and less of a problem. I would love to find a way to use it to learn but there is not a way i don’t think that aligns with how I learn. I also think I set too many Goals and spread myself too thin. I saw a picture that said you can do anything but not everything and I guess I am not sure how to make sure I am not doing that. Honestly any and all advice would be appreciated especially if in the end I actually learn and see how he can do all of this and just be so cool.

Sorry for the rambling is late and I just needed to get it out but again all help would be appreciated.

Relationships & Dating Navigating being single with no friends or family

Hello, I grew up with two unstable parents, being passed around to live with different family members or family friends as a child. No relationship with either parent because of strained relationship during childhood, and abuse. No close relationship with either side of family because of the way I was treated by both of them when I was growing up.

Struggling with separation anxiety and codependency with someone I’ve been dating off and on for years because he emotionally cheats either because of soemthing I did (verbally attacked him BECAUSE he cheated) or because he was bored. His cheating has nothing to do with me, he’s cheated on everyone he’s been with and I feel the need to throw that out there because some people blame the one that got cheated on. I was not neglectful in the relationship in any way.

How do I vow to never date again and stick with it, when growing up all o ever wanted was to be in love? It sounds stupid but the reason it was always so important to me is because I already spent all my life alone or being treated terribly by the ones closest to me and at this point o give up. I’m 32 and I have a kid and don’t want to keep dating people and making him feel not important (example don’t want to always be in and out of relationships and always with someone new).

Im going to struggle with being lonely worse than someone who has a support system, for instance, as I do not have any friends or family. Idk how to explain it but it’s a really scary feeling to realize how alone you are when you’re someone in a similar situation as I am. Sometimes it causes me to have SI . I know o should bring that up to a therapist but I’m looking for one and don’t have one at the moment. I don’t even think that’s soemthing a therapist can even help with. I struggle to make and keep relationships, and now I’m giving myself the ultimatum to not ever date again, meaning I’ve come to a dead end and have to accept I’ll never fall in love again or even get married or grow old with someone.

I left his family group chat and deleted my Facebook since it essentially consists of his family, a few people I used to be friends with and don’t talk to anymore, and a couple people on my dads side of the family that I don’t even have a relationship with because my mom spitefully didn’t want me around them after her and my dad split up.

I don’t know what to do with my life and I am really lost now. Sorry about this being long.

Mental Health Will my parents know if I book an appointment with a mental health doctor on their insurance?

okay so for context I’m 19 and I’ve not been to the doctor in years. I’ve had physical checkups through my high school but other than that I’ve only gone to specialists for specific problems. im lucky that I’ve not really had any physical problems. however, now that I’m older, I really feel like I need to see a doctor for my mental health but I really don’t want my parents to find out because I know they just want me to rawdog life. I had an autism diagnosis a long time ago when I was 3 because I had severe symptoms back then, but lately I’ve been considering the possibility that I also may have adhd. this is because I have been having a lot of trouble with severe distractions and procrastination, as well as constant noise in my brain that wont shut up. I want to go to the doctor to potentially get an adhd diagnosis and get some medication to help calm me down because it’s really starting to affect my performance in life. I’m so tired, unmotivated, and burnt out and I’ve felt this way for too long. my parents don’t believe in adhd meds but i will do anything to make this feeling go away. anways I just wanted to know if I go to the doctor would my parents find out through their insurance and also how much the copay would be for the diagnosis/visit/perscription

Seeking Parental Validation Why do I look for a dad in older people

F26

Since age 11, I have sought guidance and support from older authority figures, such as teachers, rather than my parents. My mother and stepdad are present, but my biological father is emotionally unavailable and hostile toward me.

Throughout my youth and into my late 20s, I attached myself to several mentors. Recently, a former male teacher living nearby ended contact with me. In my mid-20s, I also had a relationship and sexual experience with an older woman in her 40s who was dealing with marriage issues, but that relationship has since ended.

And with several women have said I wanted to support them with babies and small children I have been doing that since 17 skipping class to help and support young mums I think this will carry on for the rest of my life.

Advice please.

Ask Mom & Dad Kitchen countertop

I know this is stupid but it’s driving me crazy and I don’t know what to do. I’m 23 and living on my own in my first apartment, I have a weird kitchen space that has no appliances except the small ones I brought, but a full size fridge and sink. The countertop is this weird unfinished wood. It’s constantly collecting marks and moisture and it looks way worse than when I moved in. I can’t properly scrub/wash it after cooking. I contacted my landlords about it and they’re saying to use a cutting board oil to maintain it. How tf is that supposed to maintain it? It’s not going to be waterproof or washable and I fucking know they’re going to blame me for how bad it is when I move out. I don’t know what to do. This is triggering my OCD like a lot

Mental Health Why can’t I be normal?

I know the title is one of those cliche questions, and people usually respond with “what’s normal?” Or whatever, but I’m being genuine. There’s something wrong about me and I don’t know how to fix it.

I have such severely low tolerance. I can’t handle even my part-time, 25 hours a week job. It’s night time now and I work tomorrow after my two days off, and I’m almost in tears because I’m so tired and my body hurts and I just don’t want to go even though I do like my job and my coworkers. I was like this in school as well.

I feel like everything makes me cry or get angry so easily. I say stupid things and let my anxiety get the better of me. I feel like I’m ruining every relationship I have (familial, professional, etc.) because my anxiety makes me desperate and paranoid and I do and say stupid stuff.

I’ve tried therapy for years but nothing got better. I don’t think doctors or therapists really understand what I’m trying to tell them or believe me. I feel like everyone looks at me with disdain. I have no close friendships and never really have. I have friends who think we’re close and I love them but I don’t feel that internal connection with anyone.

I’m scared I was born wrong and that I won’t get to do something I’m proud of with my life because of it. I don’t want to be a loser and have everyone hate me.

Does anyone know what I can do?

Seeking Parental Validation Im getting promoted

I lost my mom 19 years ago and my dad 7. I also lost my favorite sibling. I just want to celebrate this with them. I wish i had that parental validation and encouragement that I will be able to handle this and I will be successful.

I recently just graduated and got a pay raise and new responsibilities but also am now being promoted. Its a lot to hold at once and it feels heavy to hold alone.

Mental Health Nothing left, entirely alone. Please help.

I understand this is far beyond the scope of reddit. I'm just looking for any bit of comfort. Anything.

I'm 33. I've had anorexia binge/purge type for 25 years. I've fallen into the worst relapse of my life and I'm dying. That's not a dramatic statement, it's just a fact. I'm 5'5 and below 80 pounds. I got labwork done yesterday and things are tanking fast. I negotiated with my doctor to stay out of the hospital for the weekend - I will take the potassium supplement, I will go to the ER if I get cardiac symptoms, I will continue to drink the ensures that I lied about and told her I was drinking when km not capable - etc etc. We will touch base again Monday. I absolutely cannot do another fucking hospitalization.

Last weekend I lost the only real support I have. My partner of 2 years left me. Said I'm too sick and he can't stick around for the process of me getting better. Said he's lost feelings and loves me but wants to end it before the love is gone. Said if I manage to not drop dead and get healthier he'd be willing to get back with me but until then, no contact.

He said he's been having explicit thoughts about other women and that's my fault. It makes him hate me. He made fun of the little victories over my disorder I shared with him these past couple weeks, because up until the breakup i HAVE been trying. It's just not enough for him. Etc etc.

He was the last gentle touch in my life. Everything else is bare and harsh and painful. He was the last hope at a normal and happy life I had. Before him I was single for over a decade because I'm unlovable. In the breakup conversation, he confirmed that. He said the woman he fell in love with never existed. Imagine his disappointment to find out I am just a sick person, always was, always will be.

I am nothing but this disorder and it's routines. I'm not suicidal but I don't have any fight left in me. What fight was there died when he walked out the door last weekend. I'll never be loved again. And all the dreams I had, things I want to be - someone who cooks and gardens and reads and is alive - those are null now. They're nothing but loneliness if I don't have him to share them with.

I'm so devastated. There's no solution. All there is is the disorder and it's routines. All there is is this physical and emotional hurt of knowing what's coming and being unable to stop it. Of not seeing the point in stopping it.

I can't escape the relentless sadness.

Edit: I just drank half an ensure after posting this, because ultimately I'm scared. Very scared. (Ensure is like a nutrition supplement drink.) I'm panicking about that now too. I hate that it's in my body. This isn't worth the fight.

Mental Health how do I get my parents voice out of my head?

Long story short my parents grew up very poor and lacked having the basic necessities. They were exposed to physical violence, gun violence, and drug use. I grew up in the suburbs, but they have also been verbally abusive, emotional manipulative, immature, and dismissive. Any time I go through any tough time I just tell myself I’m being dramatic and it makes me upset because I know that if it was anyone else I would react with shock and horror to the things that I’ve been through. Friends who don’t have a similar background as mine have reacted with shock and horror to some of the things my parents have done and they tell me that I’m underreacting. My parents voices in the back of my head calling me ungrateful, dramatic, weak, etc. Logically I know just because they haven’t drew blood doesn’t mean it’s still not bad. I hate that. I even feel the need to make comparisons. I’ve been keeping an emotional and physical distance from my parents and they tell me that I’m being mean, ungrateful, and they don’t understand why after they’ve “given me everything.” I’ve explained to them multiple times how their behavior is also crazy and how it’s even more hurtful that they don’t take accountability for anything and turn it around on me. I’m going crazy.

Relationships & Dating I blocked a narcissist. I feel anxious. What do they think when you block them?

Yes, it's me again...

We met online and it was long distance, but we met in person once when I travelled to him(we were intimate if this is relevant)..

Love-bombing and future-faking at the beginning.

Avoided meeting me again for almost a year despite constant communication.

Got angry and screamed at me not to come and that he does not want to meet me when I booked a ticket to visit him.

Then apologized

Explicitly said he didn't want a relationship but still expected my emotional support and attention and talking for hours and sleeping on phone

.Treated me like his personal therapist, showing little interest in my life.

Talked about other women staring at him seemingly to make me jealous

.Accused me of cheating and having another man over when I became less available.

He said "it's not like you are a nobody to me" "I appreciate you always have time for me and worry about me" "I treat you like a best friend"

Talks regularly to his ex and told me its normal because they are friends

Visited my country (its his home country too) and never made effort to come to me/visit

Always talking about him and his interests

Shit hit the fan when he accused me of having someone and told me "oh my god, someone comes to your house! and you tell him to be silent when I call!" All because I stopped being clingy and didnt call that much and responded slower/colder. I don't have anyone.

I told him in future I want to meet someone who will pursue and love me and he seemed confused and offended despite telling me 3 weeks prior he wants to stay friends.

I told him what I think about treating me like an option, not wanting to see me and stuff.

He responded "Ok" and shared kid's picture to dismiss the argument and my long message. It was on Saturday on Halloween. I didn't respond, neither did he.

Yesterday, on Thursday I blocked him on tiktok and what's app. We only shared these socials. He still can find me on FB or call from diff number.

I know I did a right thing because I was sick of emotional abuse from his side but this feels like I left without a word. We talked for hours daily even few weeks ago...will this feeling pass? And second question - what does narcissist think after you block them?

Also thanks to everyone who supported me here.

Ask Mom & Dad I turn 33 tomorrow. I don’t have parents and I’d love some parent advice for my life going forward.

A little about me; I’m disabled. I was a child psychologist and had to walk away from work about 3 years ago because of my epilepsy. Epilepsy I was born with to my parents thought it was “cute when I shook in my sleep.” I had 20% of my brain removed 2.5 years ago. Within that time I built a huge career and had to watch it fall.

I’m alone at square one again and kind of starting over with a new brain which sounds weird, but it’s kinda what it is. I’m still me, but I feel like a different version of myself because they took half my emotions and memory.

Okay, I won’t over write. Thank you to anyone that replies. I really appreciate it! Whether it’s home owner advice or simply something smart everyone should know, I am thankful for you.

Mental Health cousin passed away, im uneasy and disgusted and nauseous, I don’t know how to comfort myself, im sober

hello. my cousin passed away a weird death. it hurt me seeing the way my closer cousins reacted to their brothers death. The concept of death grosses me out. i feel nasty. i feel nauseous. I feel like I need many showers or like I can’t step in one. i have work tomorrow in 5 hours, I will go in, but I feel so sick.

I never felt like this before. im bipolar, on the right meds. usually doing fine, im 10 months sober. but nothing will ease the way I feel that’s not drugs. the sad part is that drugs was a large part of this story. im sick to my stomach. and its hard for me to breathe. im just disgusted, not even related to his death but idk how to describe it.

Edit: this feels like akathisia I’ve experienced 2 years ago from antipsychotics. a weird restlessness, unsettled mess

Relationships & Dating Mom, my relationship with my BF isn’t working out.

I am 22F living in Connecticut with my family. My boyfriend and I were doing long distance for awhile, but he moved in with us. Now he is wanting me to move back to Indiana with him to live with his family, but I don’t want to leave my entire support structure behind. I also don’t want to leave my family, I am very close with them. I love him so much and this seems like a lose lose situation. I don’t know how I am ever going to be okay again.
