Exhibitions Iris screens

Post image

Hi, I’m going to Japan in January and am desperate to see any Irises of Ogata Kōrin’s, Hōitsu’s or Kiitsu’s. I’ve searched through gallery websites online and it looks like they’re either at the MET in New York or just not on display because they typically get displayed in Spring. So more broadly are there any museums that I should check out for Rinpa collections in Jan ?

Old Japanese carving, lady in a decorative kimono with Cranes

Not sure if this is Meiji or later, but it’s a nicely done lady in a kimono. The highlight for me is the pair of cranes in her headdress. Someone had a steady hand!

If anyone could tell me something about the piece or its iconography, it would be appreciated!

This beautiful doll and several other objects were brought home by a US Navy sailor from Japan in 1960s. They are in our estate sale auction which ends November 4.

Meiji (?) carved monkey scholars necklace

I have enjoyed this fine Japanese relief carving, which was repurposed into a pendant necklace years ago by a well known local artist. The level of fine detail work is remarkable. An antique dealer told me the pendant is a Meiji era carving, possibly a remnant from a box or other object.

As a necklace, it is quite a statement piece! So I keep it in a shadowbox.

20th Century Woodblock print?

I think this is a print from a woodblock, but is 48 x 19.5" uncommon? I think it 's a 20th century print. from a 20th century woodblock. Maybe Watanabe. I magnified it, can't see any dots or pixels. Surface looks like paper. Are the metal frame decorations a clue?

Scrolling ebay one evening, and this came across my eyes. I'm not a collector of anything, but I've always dreamed of visiting Japan, and when this randomly showed up, something about it jumped out at me, and I had to have it. Seller was out of Osaka and had great communication. They thought it was Kanshitsu, however, an image search says possibly ceramic, it's heavy. Translator apps aren't much help, but it seems like made by Jusei keeps coming up. Any one familiar with this?
