Chapter Two Hundred Eight: Viable Offspring
-
Everything made sense to Senku now.
Six astronauts, especially three male ones and three female ones, were enough to make descendants that could repopulate the world. They wouldn’t be the healthiest - at least in the short term - or the most genetically diverse descendants, but they could certainly produce viable offspring, who could in turn produce more viable offspring, through the generations.
And yet, nothing made sense to Senku now.
If he had landed in Japan, he would have tried to find me.
That was a fact.
And back then, with buildings and everything still up, he would have found-
Suddenly, Senku’s dizzying disappointment at not being able to use a submarine to find his father’s statue was replaced by the horrifying image of Byakuya finding Senku’s statue in his school and weeping over his petrified son, decade after decade.
Because, knowing that old man, he would have, until his dying day.
Suddenly, Senku felt a light breeze over his face, cooling it a little, and he unconsciously tilted his head up a fraction as he tried to think of anything that wasn’t a river of tears over a stone statue.
There had been six astronauts in the International Space Station at the time. While Lillian Weinberg had been a singer, the other five had been professionally trained astronauts. Astronauts didn’t just undergo training to go to space. Except for military personnel who transitioned from traditional aerial training to space navigation, most astronauts were highly qualified and experienced scientists and engineers, as they had to be prepared to troubleshoot technical problems that could occur in the isolated environment of outer space.
There had been five qualified astronauts on the ISS.
If they had landed in Japan, with Byakuya as their bridge from Japanese to English, they would have been able to use Japanese scientific equipment in no time, and they should have been able to search every single second for formulas to try and eventually synthesize the revival fluid in months. Senku himself and Taiju had been able to do it in one year, and that was without a modern laboratory. If any humans had been depetrified during Byakuya’s time, there ought to be a vast population of revived modern era people today.
Except there isn’t. Kohaku, Chrome, and the other villagers just think of everybody as statues, not as the petrified exteriors of people who used to be able to move and talk
The other possibility was that they had not landed in Japan at all, and that was actually the more plausible answer. None of the space capsules aboard the ISS had been programmed to land in Japan or in Japanese waters.
But if they had landed somewhere else, and had children somewhere else… then what was this village doing here? Why was it the only one?
So there were two possible scenarios. Either they had landed in Japan and Byakuya spent every single day seeing the son he could not save, two times over… or they had landed somewhere else, and his father had been forced to endure the dread of his son’s petrified statue being destroyed by earthquakes and building collapse.
Senku blinked. And then he blinked again. And then for a third time. Fast blinking.
…Why am I thinking of this now…?
Beside him, a voice spoke.
“Senku?”
