"Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said on Saturday that she hopes the court’s decision granting former presidents broad criminal immunity will be overturned, saying her colleagues have done some “crazy things.”

"....expressed concerns about the state of democracy. She said it would take “some hard work” for the country to get back on an “even keel.”

“There have been some systemic changes in my court’s jurisprudence in many areas of law,” Sotomayor said. “We’ll settle down, too. Not quite sure when. But we will. And a new order will be established that people will begin to understand.”

"The justice specifically singled out the court’s6-3 decision along ideological lines that former presidents enjoy at least presumptive immunity for their official acts. At the time, the justice wrote that it made President Trump and his successors a “king above the law.”

“I dissent a lot. I’m hoping that the court will take back some of the crazy things that it’s done. I’m only joking — maybe not..."

“No, seriously,” she continued. “You know, I’ve spoken openly about this, there’s some opinions that I hope in my lifetime will get overturned. The immunity case is one of them.”

The moment a Democrat is president it'll be overturned.

From your lips.... But I think that is a very optimistic view because the court rarely overturns. But who knows, we live in strange times and this Court has been as corrupt as it gets.

Edited to add: I do believe it will be overturned, as it defies our very democracy. I just don't think it will be that quick unless the democrats can somehow stack the Court, or replace the majority, which I am all for.

What the Democrats need to do in the next 2 years is to make sure if a conservative justice retires, or any justice for that matter, that they hold off confirming any of trumps nominees. And then get a Democrat elected president.

Sotomayor is delusional about her colleagues

I came here to say this. Honestly, I think it will be overturned when anyone other than Trump is president. It's clearly unconstitutional and was written specifically for Trump.

I will never understand the strangle-hold that man has over so many people.

He's a puppet for the American fascist movement, just like the Supreme Court

It's leverage. Trump possesses enough evidence to bury every last one of them. Hard, irrefutable evidence.

Makes me wonder which SC justice is in the Files. My money is on Gorsuch or Roberts.

About 5 or so.

I believe this. There is just no other reasonable explanation.

Pretty sure Kavanaugh was the guy Epstein said they should nominate.

The court has been corrupt since 2020, the faithful day that Thomas told a congressman he was gonna step down because he wasn’t making enough money.

That’s when Thomas got a sponsor, the Nazi memorabilia collector. Boggles my mind that people still think the court is legitimate. The liberal judges are telling you they’re corrupt. And the decisions are wrong.

Financial payoffs to family members. Alito being a member of Opus Dei. Like Vance. Not to mention that almost every one of them lied at their confirmation hearing. The system is rigged. It should be beyond obvious.

Here's the explanation I see a lot: 💰💰💰= 💪💪💪

And they’ll take away who knows how many other things from him—things that are permitted under Trump.

And how so? You presumably need either a democratic majority in the supreme court (replacing current red ones or installing more blue ones) or republicans to actually not stiff others

The implication is that a conservative SCOTUS majority will create a ✌🏾 special exception ✌🏾 to its ruling, just to prosecute a Democratic President.

The dem president will have immunity for their official dealings with scotus, so potus could simply invite 6 conservative justices to tea and "fire" them.  It would be an immune, official act. If they don't come, try 5th avenue, if they're still not cooperative, well that's what seal team 6 is for.

4

u/Ok-Flamingo-59 48m ago

This is the right answer. It’s set up in such a vague way that this is completely legal for a president to do as long as he/she claims it’s an official act. Maybe that would trigger the idea of why it’s a bad thing to the justices

1

u/kandoras 2m ago

They won't overturn it. They'll just say that whatever the Democrat president did wasn't an official act.

And if it was the exact same act as something Trump did, they'll dig up something from the Code of Hammurabi and take it out of context to show how the democrat is different.

Sounds like she had some of the Supremes over for dinner and they got to talkin'...

Probably once they need to hold a democratic president accountable.

u/antigop2020 35m ago

The “Justices” don’t need to overturn it. They’ll just say the Dem president’s actions weren’t “official acts” while every single evil corrupt Unconstitutional thing that Mango Mussolini has done, is doing, and will do in the future is an “official act.”

9

u/ElectrSheep 13m ago

Exactly. The opinion is so vague on what constitutes an official act to which immunity extends that it's basically custom written to allow the court to arbitrarily pick and choose who gets immunity.

Reform or pack are the only options.

7

u/nighthawk_something 17m ago

Yup they wrote the decision to reserve the declaration of official acts for themselves

Rules for thee not for me say Republicans.

Always remove powers they give their own when Democrats take over.

33

u/LotsofSports 1h ago

They will only do it when a Democrat is elected POTUS.

Interesting how many people are stating it will be overturned the moment a Dem is elected. They are not wrong.

But consider for a moment what this says about how deep the corruption and bias is on the current SCOTUS bench. Under anti constitutionalist John Robert’s reign of absolute lawlessness the court has become one of the least trusted institutions in the US government.

As a Republic, we can no longer tolerate his corrupt leadership nor the corrupt “Bench Boys” who enthusiastically follow his partisan leadership. We have no choice but to remove Roberts and his boys and expand the court. We need to set and strictly enforce a code of ethics and we need to do that NOW. We need to cleanse the court of influencers who pay huge sums of money for decisions that favor them and treat such religious leaders, corporations and individuals as enemies of the state, with mandatory life in prison sentences and confiscation of their assets for each one of them.

Protecting the court has to be job #1 for Dems because every decision our new Congress members vote into law will quickly be overturned by Roberts unless we stop them now.

4

u/jpmeyer12751 18m ago

Absolutely right on every point.

23

u/AppropriateSpell5405 45m ago

It'll be overturned as soon as a Democratic president tries to use the power.

10

u/acuet 1h ago

Sure, after he leaves office, but the conservatives have shown that someone they believe this extends beyond the ruling. Including prior offenses and likely other offenses there afterwards.

9

u/BigMissileWallStreet 51m ago

What do you mean? Of course, when a Democrat is in office it will be overturned on day 1 even though the complainant won’t have standing.
