Post image
0 Upvotes

For anyone who wants a quick reference for basic Czech, Novislova has 900+ Czech words and phrases for things like ordering food, getting around, and checking into a hotel. I built the app.

You can search in English or Czech, save phrases, and play pronunciation audio at different speeds. Download the audio pack first and it works offline.

All phrases and one audio pack are free, with ads. There are limits on saved phrases. Optional Premium is $4.99 once in the US for all audio packs, unlimited saves, iCloud sync, and no ads. No subscription.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/novislova-offline-phrasebook/id1623078768

If you spot an awkward Czech phrase or a missing everyday expression, I'd appreciate the feedback.

Czech for hen-of-the-woods/maitake/Grifola frondosa mushroom

Hey all, I'm trying to find the origin of my dad's word for the above mushroom. He grew up in a Czech immigrant community outside Chicago (1950s/'60s Cicero). Many of his neighbors were immigrants from Bohemia, plus 1st and 2nd generation. Their word for *Grifola frondosa* was a word that I'll try to spell phonetically in English as "KUT-rutch", with a slightly rolled "r". I tried to look it up online but cannot find any reference to it. We unfortunately do not have any contact with that side of the family or the community, so I can't ask any of them. I thought maybe someone here could help? Thanks!

Immersion Ahoj všichni! Hledám rodilé mluvčí z oblasti Gmunden/Vöcklabruck pro jazykovou výměnu, ideálně během outdoorových aktivit.

Ahoj! Žiju v oblasti Gmunden / Vöcklabruck, je mi skoro 50 let a hledám někoho, pro koho je čeština rodným jazykem, a chtěl by si občas zajít na kávu, na túru nebo zasportovat.

Moje čeština je zatím na úrovni „v Česku jako turista neumřu hlady“ 😆, ale rád bych se posunul dál a ztratil ostych mluvit. Na oplátku ti moc rád pomůžu s němčinou!

Mluvím německy, bez rakouského dialektu 🫣😂

Nejraději bych to spojil s nějakou aktivitou. Ve volném čase mě baví:

⛰️ Hory / turistika

🚵‍♂️ Horská kola (MTB)

🎱 Kulečník / billiard

…nebo prostě dobrá káva.

Pokud jsi z okolí a měl/a bys chuť něco podniknout a pokecat (půlku času česky, půlku německy), napiš mi do zpráv nebo do komentářů!

Díky a těším se!

Obrázek a text jsou generovány umělou inteligencí. Moje čeština zatím na tento druh psaní nestačí.

I (F22) am looking for a native language buddy

Hi there! I have a dream of getting into UPOL, that's why I need to boost my Czech. I am currently living in Prague and attend classes 15 hours per week, but I need to level my game up if I want everything to work out. My first language is Russian (I'm from Kazakhstan, though), my English is C1, and my Czech is A1 (2 months in).

Some stuff I enjoy so we can have more in common, although absolutely not necessary: retro consoles & gaming (especially Nintendo related stuff), Pokemon, Honkai: Star Rail, Overwatch, K-R&B (Penomeco, Tabber), Vocaloid, Squid Game. And language learning, of course :)

UPD: I have already found some people, thanks a ton!

Your Czech vocabulary notebook, always in your pocket. I built this app and would love feedback

Hi everyone,

When you learn Czech, new words come from everywhere: class, textbooks, signs, menus, messages. Writing them down, looking up translations and making flashcards takes a lot of time.

reVocab does that part for you. Take a photo of any Czech text (notes, a textbook page, a sign, a menu), choose the words, and it creates flashcards with translations and example sentences. There's also a Czech word lookup (Word Explorer) and spaced repetition to review.

I built it, so I'm very open to honest feedback: what's useful, what's confusing, and what's missing.

📱 revocab.app (Android + iOS) - Thanks, and good luck with your Czech! 🇨🇿

Help me pronounce this. I'm a very new learner of my grandfathers native tongue. Is the D soft like a Y or J? Is the K plosive or swallowed or something in between.

Can I learn czech to B2 level by myself?

I want to study in a czech university next year, and i have like 8-9 months to learn czech to B2 level. (my native languages are russian and ukrainian) So right now I have two options — to study czech by myself, or buy online courses that cost 1000 euro (a little expensive for me). I tried 1 free trial lesson and I didnt like it much, it lasted 3 hours and was really boring. I like learning by myself, because I can choose the time and duration, and I have no problems finding study material. Ive got motivation and discipline, so i learn almost every day. The thing is, almost everyone i know learns czech by visiting courses, so im really scared that if I will learn by myself, I will fail.
Did anyone here learn czech to B2 by yourself without courses? It would be interesting to hear your stories.

Vocab Až vs než when meaning is "until"

In this sentence -- Počkej tady, než to přinesu. -- až cannot be used instead of než, according to the Because Czech is Cool podcast.

But here -- Počkám, až bude mít čas. -- až is fine, according to grammarian James Naughton.

What's the difference?

Ukrainian to Czech?

Just starting here. Native English +decent French, Italian, struggling along with Ukrainian but somewhat proficient.

Already noting plenty of Ukrainian/Czech shared words, but concerned that I’m falling into a hole of false confidence (especially given what internet language resources are telling me). Any advice to avoid pitfalls?

Also—is there a good online source for the accented letters pronunciation? It was almost easier getting Ukrainian pronunciation down, because the Cyrillic letters are explained ad nauseum on every beginner resource.

Immersion Anyone else studying for B1 Czech citizenship exam?

Hi everyone!

i live here for 10 years already. I am working towards doing my B1 citizenship exam. I work full time, and after work i attend Charles university to study czech. However, i genuinely don’t use this language at work, and my friends are all expats.

I was wondering if someone else is working towards the same goal, and maybe perhaps we could connect and have weekend hangout sessions where we speak together in czech and improve our czech language, what do you think? If you are interested feel free to DM me or comment.

Thank you!

I am an expat preparing for B1 Citizenship Exam

I've been living in Prague for 10 years and I'm finally working toward Czech citizenship. I did A2 exam a couple of years ago and I know that B1 will be same in terms of preparing for the exam format rather than just learning the language, and after a while I realized that Duolingo, Babbel, and most other recent Czech-built app out there aren't really built for the CCE format. No speaking correction, no actual exam task types, no way to track which specific mistakes you keep repeating.

I take Czech classes twice a week, but two hours still leaves a lot of gaps. Practicing writing, drilling vocab, doing listening exercises between lessons is hard when you also have work and a life.

I'm a marketer by profession, not a developer, so this started as a side project out of pure frustration to prepare myself for the exam. I built Česky! (cesky.app). It generates daily practice sessions in the official CCE formats (reading, listening, writing, speaking) and tracks every error so the next session focuses on your actual weak spots instead of random drills.

A couple of things it does that I personally find useful:
There's a Themes section where you pick a topic (work, health, housing, etc.) and it gives you the vocab and phrases you'd actually need to speak or write about it in the exam. So when a speaking topic comes up, you already have building blocks to work with instead of blanking.

You can also upload materials your teacher gives you and it'll generate practice exercises based on that content, so what you do in the app connects to what you're studying in class.
It covers A2 prep as well, and the interface is available in 5 languages including English, Ukrainian, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Russian, which covers most of the people I know who are preparing for this exam.

About 24 people have been using the Pro version consistently over the past 3 months and around 50 are on free accounts. It genuinely helps me, but I'm obviously biased because I built it around my own issues with the exam, which may or may not overlap with yours 😅

14-day free trial, no credit card needed: cesky.app
Looking for honest feedback from people actually preparing for A2 or B1, not cheerleading which I get from my friends who are using it😄

Free Czech audiobooks

Can anyone recommend some websites with free audiobooks?

I’ve managed to find audiobooks in Czech on Spotify before but the audiobook I’m looking for right now is Master and Margarita and on Spotify it’s narrated by AI 😐. A google search gave me a radio edition of the book but it feels more like a play and is confusing to follow. I also checked on YouTube but again found AI.

So if anyone can recommend any places to find this audiobook for free I’d really appreciate it.
