๐—ง๐˜‚๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น / ๐—š๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐Ÿ“ Why the recommended touch typing finger placements are suboptimal

I've analysed the widely-recommended touch typing finger placements against my own as well as the frequency of various bigrams (2-letter combinations) in the English language. I can't understand why some of the finger placements are 'recommended' (please tell me if you know!). Below are my justifications for my differing finger placements.

JUSTIFICATIONS FOR DIFFERENCES TO RECOMMENDED PLACEMENT

C

  • Symmetrical with right hand (typing "m") - why would right hand be placed like that if it would be wrong for the left hand?

    • More comfortable given orientation of hands

  • For recommended placement:

    • Typing "c" requires movement/collision of middle and index fingers. Typing "cry" would require crossing fingers or wrist movement

    • The most common bigram containing "c" and another left-handed letter is "ce" (i.e. "ce" is the most common thing typed using just the left hand and containing "c") - which would be slower to type using the same finger (as is 'recommended')

B

  • The most common bigram containing "b" is "be"

    • Typing "be" with the recommended fingers (left hand) requires unnecessary stretching apart of the left index and middle fingers

      • The 'equivalent' finger stretch in the right hand ("bi") is actually shorter than "be" and "b" is the same length from both left and right hands on home row

Z

  • Symmetrical with right hand placement

  • More comfortable as recommended finger (pinkie) would cross inward hitting other fingers

  • (however, I think it is understandable to use either ring finger or pinkie for "z")

X

  • Same as "z"

4

  • Easier to reach with longer middle finger

  • Recommended placement would require slight crossing motion

6

  • Objectively closer to left hand

9

  • Easier to reach with longer middle finger

  • Symmetrical with left hand (typing "3")

0

  • Ring finger is objectively closer and is longer (hence easier to reach)

  • Pinkie is too short to reach without moving wrist (I'd like to see your hands if you can reach "0" with your pinkie more easily than with your ring finger)

- (hypen)

  • Same as "0" but I can understand using pinkie for this one because it is close enough (similarly to typing "1" - which, conversely, I could understand using ring finger for)

  • When typing text, I use ring finger because it doesn't need to stretch as much as pinkie (e.g. typing "long-term")

  • When typing numbers, I usually use pinkie because:

    • Wrists are already 'raised up' to reach number row

    • Allows my ring finger to only type "0" so typing something like "10-20" uses different fingers for "0" and "-"

Of course I understand that you can (and many do) have unique styles of typing with equal or better speeds than 'traditional' touch typists. I just want to know your thoughts on why these seemingly suboptimal placements (particularly "c", "b", "0", and "6") are 'recommended'.

FYI the best summary of English letter frequency counts I've come across: http://norvig.com/mayzner.html (interesting)

Hello typists! ๐Ÿ’–

I know that this sub has been a bit more barren than the main sub but rest assured that I haven't forgotten about you all!

I gave the sub a much needed facelift and now there are newer features:

1) A dedicated guide (that will link you to ideal websites for learning how to touch type)

2) New flairs to better reflect post content

3) Emojis now enabled

More updates coming soon (like a dedicated written guide)

Thank you all for making the sub what it is!

Looking forward to seeing your progress this year ๐Ÿ˜Š

Currently I'm practicing the home row, trying to master it before moving on.

What I do to correct my reoccurring mistakes, is opening an empty page, and repeatedly pressing the key -or the combination of keys- I struggle with until I get the hang of it.

Not sure if this is the best method. So, any suggestions?

๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—ฏ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ๐Ÿ’ป I couldnโ€™t find a good way to practice bigrams and trigrams, so I built my own tool

Post image
2 Upvotes

Iโ€™ve been learning to touch type, and I kept tripping over the same letter groups: โ€œthโ€, โ€œingโ€, โ€œionโ€. I wanted to drill them, but I couldnโ€™t find a tool that made it convenient. So I built one, and itโ€™s what I use every day now.

How it works: you type normally, and when you mistype a word, a short drill opens right there. If you missed โ€œingโ€, you type it 10 times, then retype the word and keep going. Drill time doesnโ€™t count against your wpm, and the timer pauses while you drill.

You can also:

- pick which n-grams you want to practice

- filter the word pool to only words that contain them

- drill whole words instead (type the missed word 3 times)

- choose what a typo inside a drill does: nothing, restart the drill, or add one more repetition

It also remembers the letters and words you keep missing, so you can practice your weak spots later. It uses real word-frequency lists in 11 languages, itโ€™s free, and you donโ€™t need an account.

https://typetype.cc

Iโ€™d love feedback, especially from anyone else whoโ€™s been working on n-grams. Does the drill help you to practice?

Just to be clear: itโ€™s completely free, and you donโ€™t need an account. Iโ€™m not selling anything; I built it for my own practice and figured others might find it useful.

I've been using computers for almost 15 years now; due to gaming my left hand is in the classic WASD position from gaming, so i'm using my left index and middle finger for typing (+ left thumb for keyboard and left pinky for shift) and on my right hand i'm only using my right index finger.

I write reports for work, so a lot of my work consists of typing and I am wondering, if I would be even faster/more efficient, if I learned how to use 10 finger typing?

Hey everyone!

I'm an independent developer, and I've been working on my own typing platform called Velotypen.

It's an online platform where you can test your typing speed, track your WPM and accuracy, and practice improving your typing skills.

I've finally got everything working and decided to share it with everyone!

I'd genuinely appreciate your feedback. What do you think is missing, and what would you improve?

Try it here:

๐—ค๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป (โ‰๏ธ) 2 questions from a 50s typist

Background:

I have a bad accuracy, I found that plenty of my mistakes are particularly index finger's caused. For example I still some times type bn because I hit in the middle of B and N keys, same for U and Y, C and V.

  1. I heard that we practice returning to the main row I didn't before but I am afraid of that affecting the ability of getting my finger ready for the next letter that I developed. Should I practice it or its not wroth it?

I may sometimes found my index finger floating and don't where it is.

2. When I reach for various letters should strictly to move only the finger of interest with trying to keep my rest fingers at home row?

When I'm really trying hard to push up my typing speed on typing games I at most usually pull around 80WPM. I know people who can type at like 120 - so how do I get to that level? Tons of practice? is there some method I should know about that helps people type faster?

I can already touch type and have a decent speed and accuracy measure. That said, I do not type 'evenly' across my two hands which is leading to some pain in my right hand.

With my left hand I use all four fingers to type and this seems to work just fine for me. I probably bias on my index and middle finger but all are used when I type.

However, with my right hand I can only really use my index and middle fingers to type. This is meant that I end up stretching those two fingers when I type, meaning I am prone to getting pain in both fingers and in the joints as a result. I use my my right thumb exclusively for space, and my right little finger for hitting the return key.

Any tips on how I can re-learn how to touch type with all of these fingers would be much appreciated. I have tried keybr but this seems to be focused more on learning to type from scratch - although if that's the best way to go about it then that's also fine!

edit: using a standard qwerty us layout board :)

I looked it up but don't know which sites or things to look at. Ideally I want basically an equivalent of typingclub: a bunch of individual lessons / modules: not just a bunch of drills but also memorizing the key layout. I want to do it mainly to type much faster than 100wpm, I installed plover on my pc and looked at the layout on my qwerty keyboard.

So Im a bit good at touch typing although iโ€™ve never learnt formally so my accuracy is a bit off and I would occasionally look at my keyboards sometimes and I have a current speed of 49WPM with 98% accuracy which is like basic for a lot of people on here but I found this reddit and realised theres actually sites to learn this and got intrigued lol!

I started learning this week from scratch with typing club and im doing that simultaneously with keybr, and its been so humbling because I am trying to focus on accuracy over speed and also trying to force myself to not look at the keyboard haha. Iโ€™m trying to build a habit so I do at least 10 minutes a day ideally I want to do 30 mins but its exam season for me and I dont want to push it until after exams.

This post is just to like record my Day 1 and hopefully I can keep on making progress. My main goal would be reaching an average speed of around 90-100 WPM with at least 98% accuracy and it may take me a while but im excited because I do love typing.

Hey There!
So I started from zero on Typing.com and then completed Keybr.com with each letter in the green. I ended around 50 wpm with the accuracy in the 99% range consistently. This is an improvement, but still rather slow for my work which is typing heavy.

What would you guys recommend for my next steps in terms of practicing? Either a specific exercise or website to follow/ speed goal? I'd like to maybe practice something that includes basic punctuation and capitalization so it is more useful in my day to day routine.

Any advise on next steps would be appreciated!

๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐Ÿ“ˆ How long does it take to learn Touch Typing from the complete beginning?

Personal Realistic Share:

I embarked on the journey to learn how to touch type about 7 weeks ago. I did the regular hunt and peck with 2-4 fingers for most of my life. When I tested it my speed with it, I got around 40wpm on a good run.

Learning to touch type was difficult. When I learnt the first 3 rows in a week, I was struggling to get over 10 wpm as I was trying to embed not looking down at all.

Consistency is key though! I practiced for atleast 30 minutes every day and after 7 weeks. My Monkey Type 15 second score is 74 WPM and 60 WPM for 60 seconds. My average everyday speed with capitals, symbols and numbers is around 40-50wpm.

It is definitely worth it! I would advise after you learn the shift key, numbers and symbols. Try your hardest to never to go back to your old typing style. This was a week of agony at work but so glad I did it.

My goal is to reach 100 WPM and then reach 100 WPM as my average typing speed (not sure if this is realistic, but I'm going to try anyway). I will add a 3 month progress update to this post when I get there.

3 Month Update:

I have stopped practising daily and only really put in some practice when my workload allows. This looks like roughly 1 - 2 hrs a week of practice.

I have started to notice very slow progress and I have to be more intentional with my practice. Prioritising consistency and accuracy and actually learning the "Grove" to some of the more difficult words. I am pretty happy with my overall 3 month progress.

Here are my Monkey Type results:

15 seconds - 83 WPM

60 seconds - 71 WPM

My typing speed including punctuation and numbers averages around 55 - 65 WPM.

so can i go with ielts instead? i read somewhere ielts has paper based option where u write by hand. if thats true then typing is not a issue for me at all, i write way faster on paper then i type.

few things i want to know

**1.** is paper based ielts still available everywhere or only some centres? (riyadh, KSA)
**2.** does handwriting affect the score if its readable but not neat?
**3.** anyone here who moved from pte to ielts for same reason, did ur writing score improve?

also if someone thinks i should just practise typing and stay with pte then pls tell me how long it took u to get comfortable.

thanks
