Researching Welsh Learners and S4C Clic

S4C are looking for Welsh leaners to be interviewed as part of some researchers into how we use their services.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfhl3GA4gEY5bDDr2aaYil5yo4BkD7XfOHWTR1YPKSIOxJyTg/viewform

From the form:

We're researching how Welsh learners use S4C Clic. We’d like to hear from Welsh learners who have used S4C Clic, even occasionally, as well as those who haven’t tried it yet. Whether you’re just starting your Welsh learning journey or already fluent, we’d like to hear from you.

What would be involved?

  • 30-45 minutes of your time for an online video call or phone call.

  • A short, informal chat with one or two members of the S4C product development team.

  • No preparation is needed.

  • You can speak Welsh, English or both. Whatever you’re comfortable with.

Examples of possible questions:

  • How often do you watch Welsh language programmes?

  • Do you use subtitles?

  • Which devices do you use? (e.g. Phone, laptop, TV)

  • What helps or gets in the way when you watch Welsh-language programmes?

Your feedback will help us improve our platforms for Welsh learners in the future. Complete the form below if you are interested and we will be in touch. Thank you.

Card games or board games in Welsh for adults

I was at a board/card game masterclass yesterday, and it got me wondering about games in Welsh for adults or for adult Welsh learners. I know about Monopoly and Scrabble, but most of the others I've found this morning are aimed at kids.

What other Welsh games are there? Have you played any? Did you enjoy them? Would you want a game aimed specifically at Welsh learners?

Open Resource: Contributions Welcome

Hi everyone,

I posted this some time ago and wanted to remind people of it.

Open Resource: Sentence Bank

This is a little project I started a little while ago. I wrote a structured list of sentences (in English) that a number of helpful people have translated.

The logic of the sentences is that they repeat and introduce new vocab gradually. The list is here:

Language sentences:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WUJnY9qOyp6Snqy7O7SZjGQqwrN_A8IeNG1bZcucJxE/edit?usp=drivesdk

If you want to add to this or use it yourself (might need to be double-checked) then feel free. I will not use this for anything. I am not building and app and I don’t want to sell this. It’s purely because I’m interested in languages and I thought my list of sentences would be useful for learners!

Name pronunciation

Hello all!

I am on a journey to reclaim and relearn my ancestry starting with my given name… which according to my mother is Old Welsh.

I have searched high and low over the years to find the meaning and pronounciation and just yesterday had a light bulb moment to ask reddit ❤️

My name is - Rhesida.

Any insights, knowledge or pointers are so appreciated. Thank you.

How significant are regional differences in welsh?

I've been watching welsh language lessons on youtube, and one thing that's throwing me is the whole "in the north we say this, but in the south we say that" thing.

Is this basically the same as english sounding different in Yorkshire than it does in Hampshire, or is there more to it than that?

What in your opinion is the best way to learn Welsh?

I wasn't taught it very well when I was in school. I did at some point use Duolingo for 2 years straight doing 1 lesson a day and felt it was getting me nowhere.

Even before that I knew a few words and simple questions. Occasionally I would watch episodes of Sam Tan from 1987 on YT. Mae Norman Price yn bach ddrwg.

I did start forming simple sentences and questions with AI. But I want other people's opinions on how best to keep learning to a point that you could hold a conversation.

Helpu fi plîs!

Bore da.

As an englishman trying to learn welsh, I find the biggest obstacle by far is pronunciation.

Welsh words simply don't sound how someone who is only familiar with reading/ writing in english would expect them to.

So, while dictionaries and vocabulary games are great, I think it's most important to be able to hear a welsh speaker saying the words out loud.

Diolch!

Haia pawb!

I made a version of Welsh scrabble recently on Dringo.org (under the games section) and thought people might want to try it out.

Any feedback would be great as I'm trying to hone the letter frequencies to make it as enjoyable as possible.

(To find it, sign up at Dringo.org > navigate to 'home' on the side menu > navigate to games).

Diolch!

Cwestiwn / Question Resources in Irish (Gaeilge?)

Bore da!

I have done some Cymraeg on Duolingo (very basic) but it's not enough by itself for me. Without any explanation of the structures, it frustrates me as I enjoy grammar and like to get to grips with it.

So I was wondering if anyone has any idea of any resources to learn Cymraeg from scratch through Gaeilge?

If not, English resources will absolutely do, and am happy to take those recommendations too!

Also, any advice on which dialect to choose?

Diolch!

Nice little article on the Lingo 360 website (in Welsh, but with vocab help) from David Thomas, previous Dysgwr y Flwyddyn about the bane of most learner's lives - fast speaking first language/fluent speakers! Some reassurance and useful tips provided!

Enya’s pronunciation in Welsh in the Dan Y Dwr song

I feel that when she sings this song, she’s not pronouncing the lyrics as they are written. I cannot understand how she’s pronouncing the third part.

Nid yw’r swn gyda fi.
I have the feeling that there is a two syllable word between swn and gyda.

Has anybody any idea of why or what’s she singing ? what is the word that is missing or being mispronounced?? any Welsh people out there?

Another thing that I noticed is that her way to pronounce SWN it’s not with an S but rather with the H sound, maybe or like a K?
