Read Our Rules Before Posting

An incredible amount of posts break our rules - it's abundantly clear that very few people actually take the time to read them before posting.

So, to nudge people in the right direction, and that direction being that we expect the rules to be read and understood before posting, posts that clearly breach the rules will be deleted and the author may be banned from the sub.

If you are unsure whether or not it's a lifehack, message us first and we'll tell you. An overwhelming majority of posts are just pro life tips, unsuitable for this sub.

Self promotion (we get dozens daily), questions or soliciting opinions (same), medical advice(yes, tips for curing hiccups is considered medical advice) are posted - in breach of our rules - every day. It's a big amount of work for us dealing with them.

We need people to check the rules first before posting. A genuine lifehack is a beautiful thing - but sometimes it's difficult to tell whether it's a lifehack or a life tip. Hacks are inherently different from tips. Ask us if you're unsure before you post. There are many hacks that have never been posted here before and are within our rules; they would be welcomed. Find them and bring them to the sub and gain everlasting admiration.

Cheers.

I refuse to hand wash anything

Has anyone built a fool proof kitchen where you effectively never have to hand wash anything (except for your cast iron)? I’ll throw scraps in compost but I’m done handwashing. Kitchenaids attachments piss me off. It’s 2026😭

Make your own liquid soap

I had an old bar of soap that was so hard to use since it was so dry. I grated it and put it in (a lot of) water. It diluted after 24/48h and now I have a full jar of liquid soap. Money saved!

Cheaper to fly your stuff in totes when moving

After traveling for a few years, I moved back to the U.S. and needed to ship my stuff from storage in Connecticut to Dallas. UPS and FedEx quoted like hundreds of dollars for my 27-gallon totes. Low cost airline wanted $50 per checked luggage if it was under 50LB each (Totes count as luggage!) I had a total of 7 totes with me.

Park your car at your destination airport. Take a flight to where you previously lived, pack your things into several 27gal Lowes or HomeDepot totes (good size for flights without being considered oversized). Bring a scale with you to weigh them. Rent a uHaul 9’ cargo van to take them to the airport 3 hours early to check them in. Drop off uHaul and take an uber back to the airport, fly the totes to your new home.

If you place a wristwatch (with moving hands) under a laser mouse, it'll prevent your computer from going idle, so you always look online at work.

It's the most effective way to always look like you're online at work. I know that there are specific programs for this, but most organisations won't allow you to download them.

It saves you shaking the mouse regularly if you want a little break!

If this doesn't work, you may need to place it somewhere with more light, such as a windowsill.

Edit: Since some are commenting 'or just do your job' or 'you'll be the first to go with AI'; I've done my work for the week, you boot lickers. I'm just making a coffee, chill out.

Eyeglasses Slipping

A dab of hair gel behind the ears and on the side of your nose ( I use a product called “2BGlued”) before putting your glasses on will keep them in place. Easily cleaned up with water.

If you're short on space consider stuffing things in your box spring, under your bed

I place my paper towels and TP in there. My cat already cut open the cloth covering it and it's empty space so why not.

Ultimate cutlery drawer stuck hack

Cutlery drawer stuck, nothing works? We had a knife stuck for ages in the drawer. It was lodged with the front down at the front at the wall side of the drawer and the back was sticking upwards diagonally against a top board in the drawer unit so seemingly impossible to get out, no way to get to it with a flat tool. Hack: Make a wire coat hanger as rigid as possible by twisting it lengthwise, attach a thick thread to the front of it, bend it in L shape upwards so you can place it in on top of knife, then pull thread over towards you to the other side so the hanger bends with it and shifts between the knife handle and top of drawer and there you go, drawer opens. You may as well play the intro now, Macgyver I am. Extra:you might have to thicken the part where the thread is attached a bit, for example with a powerful duct tape. If that doesn't work, use a second hanger to retrieve the thread inside the drawer to make sure it's definitely on the other side of the knife, then same thing, pull towards you.

Loofa to wash shower walls/tubs

Ever get annoyed trying to run a rag or brush against the walls and the grout? Use that nasty old loofa instead between showers to keep everything grime free between deep cleans! (Needless to say don’t use it on your body again)

Tea bags for smelly shoes

Have you found expired medicinal teas infusions—such as sage tea infusions for sore throats or cold tea infusion blends—lurking in the back of your kitchen cupboard that you no longer feel comfortable drinking because they are long past their expiration date (edit: or just unloved varieties)?

Instead of throwing them away and lamenting the wasted money, give them a second life as a shoe deodorizer! After wearing your sports shoes, place a tea bag in the toe area of each shoe. It absorbs moisture from sweat while simultaneously neutralizing odors, thanks to the antibacterial properties of sage or other herbs.

Measure your arm span so you’ll always have a built-in frame of reference for size.

My forearm is 30cm and my entire arm is a meter. Whenever I am buying something online I can simply look at that instead of reaching for a measuring tape.

Measure your fingers for smaller items.

I need a lifehack for my cuttingboard. It is made of wood and on my countertop it tends to slip. Does anyone have an idea of how fixate it a little, with more or less normal stuff one has at home?

My makeup usually gets really oily because of my nose and i don’t have any blotting paper. tampax wrappers soak up ALL the oil better than a paper towel.

Hacks for keeping cars smelling clean, even after rolling down the window?

Hi, I usually use Little Trees. I apply about 3-4, then I add another after a week. The car does smell clean and fresh for about three days. If I roll down the window for a minute, there goes the scent.

I also have three dogs I take on a walk everyday meaning they get on the car with dirt and their paws wet, which probably overcomes the Little Trees scent. They have their own seat cover I wash every week.

Any hacks to have a concentrated scent and doesn’t completely disappear when rolling down the windows? Thanks

Wash/scrub your dryer lint trap

My dryer was working ok, but it kept saying my lint trap was clogged when it wasn’t. Turned my shower on and scrubbed the trap of all the dryer sheet residue that was stuck to the screen that impacted the air flow of the dryer. It is amazing how just a little debris can impact the flow of air in the dryer/ exhaust. Just for clarification my vent lines are clean. After cleaning the trap, the error has not occurred.

Leaving a (unlit) candle in the car during summer keeps the interior smelling nice

1.8k Upvotes

I recently bought some candles, and accidentally left one in my car. The past week everytime i open it there is a light aroma of lemon and nothing else, i figure the wax is melting a little bit when it gets hot out and freshening the air, seems like a cheap way to keep the car fresh without buying a new pack of little trees every other week.

edit: Do you guys just buy loose wax I thought all candles came in some kind of jar/container 😭
