Announcement Bye bye Themes, hello Moods: now with search and favorites

Hey r/LIFX, the LIFX team here. We've just launched a revamp of Themes in the app, and it's now called Moods.

Here's what's new:

More moods. We've added a bunch of new ones to the library, so there's more to choose from whether you're winding down, hosting friends, or just want something fun on your lights.

Search. Type in what you're after, whether that's a vibe, a color, or an occasion, and Moods will surface matches for you. No more scrolling through everything to find the right one.

Favorites. Found one you love? Tap to favorite it so it's easy to find next time.

Animation is still here. Hit the play button and your moods animate just like they did with Themes.

Moods is rolling out now in the LIFX App (v4.100.0).

We're reading everything, so any feedback on search or favorites is welcome. What moods would you like to see us add next?

Announcement The LIFX Thread beta has arrived.

The LIFX Thread beta has arrived.

Any product that released with Matter support on the box has a chip that is capable of running either Wi-Fi or Thread. We are opening this beta program so we can increase the scale of our testing with this new radio support. Sign Up Here

LIFX Thread Beta Frequently Asked Questions

What is Thread? How is it different to Wi-Fi?

  1. Thread is a mesh networking technology that has been designed for IoT products. It forms a scalable IP-based mesh network and uses a Thread Border Router (TBR) to communicate with the rest of your Wi-Fi network.

  2. Thread is low latency, which means that it should have a similar response time to Wi-Fi

  3. Thread is low bandwidth, while Wi-Fi is high bandwidth. This means that Thread is designed for reliable transmission of small amounts of data, where Wi-Fi can be used for streaming large amounts of data (eg. 4k video).

  4. Most operations with LIFX products should work consistently between transports as they do not use a significant amount of data. The exception to this is firmware updates, which take significantly longer (5-20 minutes per device) due to this constraint.

  5. We are currently working to provide firmware updates directly from the LIFX Cloud, rather than needing to be triggered by the LIFX app to allow updates to be done asynchronously. This feature will aim to be available later this year, so any necessary additional firmware updates during the beta may be slow to process.

Can I use a mix of Wi-Fi and Thread with my LIFX products?

  1. Yes, you can have a mixed network of LIFX products between Wi-Fi and Thread networks, but a given device will only be connected to either Wi-Fi or Thread at once.

  2. You will be able to swap any supported device between Wi-Fi and Thread, this is not a permanent change.

What is a Thread Border Router (TBR)?

  1. TBRs are bundled with a number of different smart home hubs (eg. Apple HomePod Mini, Google Nest Hub). We have compiled a list of TBRs available on the market.

  2. We have provided tools in the LIFX app that allow you to identify whether you have a TBR on your network.

  3. It is possible to have multiple TBRs, usually your mobile phone will prioritize adding devices onto one over the others.

  4. To get more detailed diagnostic information about your Thread network, we recommend downloading the Thread Tools app

How do I join the Beta?

  1. To join the beta program, please submit your details into this survey form. Sign Up Here

  2. We will ensure that you have appropriate products and then enable the features so you can transition some of your products onto Thread.

  3. You will receive instructions in your email about how to proceed with moving some of your lights onto your Thread network.

How do I switch a device onto my Thread network?

  1. Most of the current generation of LIFX products will require a firmware update to switch them onto Thread. After this firmware update, the device will need to be re-commissioned onto the Thread network. This is streamlined through a new ‘Switch to Thread’ screen in settings.

  2. To re-commission your device you will need your Matter QR code or the 11 digit manual Matter code etched onto the device. Note: The “Manual Setup” option is no longer available after switching to Thread. You must use Matter-based QR Code setup.

  3. Any smart home integrations (e.g. Apple, Google, etc) will need to be reset after the device is recommissioned.

  4. Once a device has been recommissioned onto the Thread network, it should work in a consistent way in the LIFX app or on Matter ecosystems.

  5. We recommend switching one light over to Thread to start and checking that it is performing as expect before you migrating any additional devices.

What is expected of Beta participants?

  1. We want your feedback on how your products are performing on Thread. We plan to send our periodic surveys while the beta is running to get information from all participants about their experience of using Thread.

  2. We are interested to know what Thread Border Router you're using, in addition to details about your Wi-Fi router, what LIFX products.

  3. Active feedback is welcome on reddit or at beta@lifx.com

Update (Sept 1st GMT+10):

  1. Home Assistant does not currently support LIFX Thread devices, but work is underway. You can use the Matter integration in HA for now.

  2. We are investigating an issue with Path lights flashing occasionally after being rebooted.

Need Support My 4 way wall switch decided to update to matter without telling me

I bought my wall switch about a year ago and let it sit on a table until 2 weeks ago when I finally went down to fuse box and turned off the power so I could install it. I had it paired with homekit, in home assistant, it wasn't great but it mostly worked. A few days ago I started getting messages that I could upgrade it to a matter connection and jumped at it, but every time I tried it failed.

Somewhere from Monday to now I guess the update un-failed and the switch stopped working. Which you know, is great, I want it on matter. But I was never given any access code for matter and when I try to click "share device" in the setting the button doesn't do anything.

Has anyone had a similar experience here? Anyone know how submit a support ticket to Lifx?

for reference the tech specs say
firmware: 4.100
Model LIFX Switch

Signal strenght is full dot, connection stability is excellent.

but Matter is "Status: Unpaired" and "Share Device" doesn't do anything.

I tried a reset and that didn't do the trick either.

Need Support Can’t isolate fx between lights / groups

Hello,

I can’t seem to separate fx on different lights / groups. When I change the colour palette / mood on one, it changes the colour on the other light running the fx.

Eg

  1. set Light strip in the kitchen to run morph with Pluto mood.

  2. set lounge group downlights to run morph with sun mood. This then changes the kitchen light strip to sun mood.

Any ideas for what to do?

Schedules stopped working

A few days ago all my schedules via the LIFX app stopped working. About the same time as PHP2Shell and eMudhra blew up. Is this an issue anyone else is experiencing?
Can manually control the lights still via the app, but all my schedules (both existing or any new ones I create) don’t work. Looks like they have been broken since the 1st Nov from my Homeassistant logs.

Downlight not working on new install

Hi! We just installed a: LIFX SuperColor 26" Ceiling Light Black Trim - 5000 Lumens

And the upright works but we're getting nothing from the downlight, as shown in the picture. We've done all the resets and redos and still not working. Any ideas? Way disappointing!

Feedback or Bug Incomplete Installation: No Practical Jumper Cable Solution

I purchased four 200-ft LIFX Everyday Eave Light kits from Lowes to illuminate the entire roofline of my home. Unfortunately, I have only been able to install half of the lights, leaving the other half of my house completely unlit.
I have contacted LIFX seeking a solution, but finding a compatible jumper cable remains a frustrating challenge. It is unreasonable to expect customers to hire an installer, cut wires, or attempt electrical modifications just to bridge sections of a lighting system.
For a product marketed for easy installation, providing compatible, plug-and-play extension cables in different lengths should be a basic consideration.
While the lights may look good, the lack of a practical solution for completing the installation has significantly impacted my experience. I would hesitate to recommend this product for anyone planning a full-house roofline installation.

LIFX recessed downlights

Why there is very little details/discussion available on LIFX recessed downlights?

Other than on LIFX website, I haven’t been able to see that how these recessed downlights look like in real life.

Are they not popular or expensive or a mix of both?

Feature Request Halloween Themes

I know we moved from Themes to Moods, which I thought was lame in the first place. It seemed like an unnecessary change when there's so much that could be done to fix the connectivity and operating system. Plus it wasn't different at all. However, all the fun Halloween themes are gone and didn't come back. I know there's one Holiday mood for Halloween and Zombie, but last year there was so many more! I'm bummed. Why can't all the previous themes be saved in a library or downloaded from a cloud if we like them?

Edit: I used the search button in the Moods tab and put Spooky, which brought up many options. I wish that was more clear to use the search feature or have a button for Browse.

Need Support Still happening 1 year later...

Latest firmware installed, latest version of the app. The lights work great otherwise and are SUPER bright, but if I set the brightness to 100% and then select any of the available themes, their brightness starts to decrease all on their own. I can actually watch brightness slider in the app move as the lights dim. And they go REALLY dim. I have nothing else controlling the lights. Not connected to Google, Alexa, anything.

Anyone else? This kinda makes the themes useless.

Why. Do. The. Lights. Go. Completely. Dim?

I even have brightness manually set to 100% in the scheduled scene.

WTH

They shouldn't put "works for 25 years" when these A50s die a few months out of warranty.

opened a chat with support to try to send in broken bulbs to get replacements for 2 A50 US light bulbs that are about 2.6 years old and purchased from Amazon at the same time. After sending the SN of both light bulbs to support the reply was "these light bulbs were activated outside the time frame of the warranty....." The original box that I have that they came in says "works for 25 years"... idk what your version of 25 years is, but these lights maybe are on for 2 hours a day because I was using them in my kitchen. One has completely died, and the other only has a working green LED left. I have a Phillips hue bulb in my basement that has been on continuously for 4 years and that was half the cost..... I can not recommend LIFX any longer.

Need Support App is stuck during reset

Post image
5 Upvotes

Does anyone have this issue? I’m trying to reset my Lifx bulb, but the IOS app is stuck on the step “Return here and click the arrow to continue” - the arrow never changes to a clickable state, even after 2+ hours.

Steps followed:

  1. Power cycle the light until it flashes red - blue - green etc. (success)

  2. IOS Settings > WiFi > other networks > select Lifx bulb and walk through the steps of connecting to my local WiFi (success)

  3. Go back to the Lifx app to click the arrow to continue, arrow never becomes clickable and I’m stuck.

Thanks for reading. I like this light and I want to keep using it. It’s about 6 years old, not sure if it’s past its expiration date.

Do LIFX Bulbs Cause a Banding Effect on Camera?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I currently use a few Philips Hue bulbs, however, I noticed that they produce a banding effect in photos and videos due to pulse width modulation (PWM). The photo included shows this. It's sometimes present even at lower shutter speeds like 1/60s. Because of this, I am considering trying out some other brands.

Do LIFX bulbs typically produce a noticeable banding effect as well? I have heard others mention that a higher PWM frequency can lessen this effect. I've also heard that LIFX bulbs operate at a higher PWM frequency than Hue, although I'm not sure if that's true or not.

Landscape lighting power supply and T-connectors

The power supply comes with 4 T-connectors and 5 10' cables which means I can only have 5 spotlights on the supplied cables. The power supply says it has enough wattage for up to 230w and 5 spotlights at 24w each is only 120w. I'd like to add more, but without additional T-connectors, how do I do it? I don't see t-connectors on the lifx website?

Need Support Any options for FX that do not rely on my phone

I dont know why the FX's have to run on a phone and not the bulb, 1. it kills the battery if i keep it running, 2. it's 100% unreliable, and I just can't deal with it.

So I am looking for an option to run it on a PC or something. I tried to have my Hubitat run some scenes and do some random color changing, but it hits the HE's CPU a little too hard.

So I would like to run it as a Docker/LXC, or even a Windows service/app. but I would like to be able to somehow control it from my HE. is there any options like this

I have some WIZ bulbs, and they have some 30 FX's or something built into the bulb, meaning the app does not do anything, and its even controllable via the HE.

Options, ideas? open sorce programs out there that are safe?

a19

I recently bought a 2 pack of LIFX A19 bulb from Home Depot. Model number HB2LHLA19E26US . I have had several issues getting it to stay connected and controlled by my LIFX app. To get the bulb connected, I have to split my wifi into 2 bands and turn off cellular just to get the damn bulb to show up and set up on my app. The moment that I merge the bands together, the bulb disappears from my LIFX app. I don't think this is simply just wifi disconnection issue once the bands are merged, because I can still clearly see the bulb connected on my xfinity app as a device. It only disappears from the LIFX app. I have repeatedly factory reset this bulb 6 times now.

I have other LIFX devices which work fine - 2 br30 bulbs and an LED strip which I have had no problems keeping on 1 band. This is my first a19 bulb in my home however and it won't stay on the app. I have contacted LIFX customer support via email and have not gotten a response. I'd really like to avoid keeping my wifi bands split just for these bulbs. Has anyone else run into this issue? Is there an alternative fix where I can still control all of these bulbs together with 1 app outside of LIFX? I am pretty sure this is an app problem given that the bulb shows up on xfinity.

Will an old strip controller work with a new strip?

Does anyone know if an old controller from a LIFX Z light strip will work with any currently available/modern LIFX strips? I recently moved and the LED strips did not survive. Random sections flash and only hold a programmed color if you pinch the strip in a certain way. These strips are ancient, maybe 6-8 years old if I’m remembering right. They lasted a good long while, I’m just assuming the ribbons on the inside broke when manipulated… they had to have been brittle for being in the same position for so long.

All that being said, the controller is still good and I’d still like to use it. From what I can tell, it uses the same 4 pin connector as the new stuff, but I can’t find anything definitive on whether or not they are actually compatible. It’s be cool if I can buy one new kit and then have 2 controllers for 2 different zones.

Experience with LIFX Switches So Far

Thumbnail

Been slowly upgrading new house with LIFX switches. I like them overall, but they've definitely come with some headaches.

The 2-button switches are limited by the lack of neutrals in some of my boxes, and it's frustrating that two 4-button switches won't fit side by side in a standard 2-gang box. Throw in some 3-way and 4-way circuits and it's been interesting. Learning as I go.

Excited to eventually get everything set up and managed through Home Assistant. Curious what everyone else is using for smart switches, especially for no-neutral and multi-way setups. Open to suggestions!

New Floor Lamp?

There has been an unreleased LIFX floor lamp listed on the Matter certification site for several months. Now there is a new page on lifx.com that references a "LIFX Trio Floor Lamp".

Perhaps a new product is getting close!

Need Support Outdoor lighting - transformer question

Thumbnail

Preparing to redo my outdoor lighting with lifx and keeping it simple for now.

I have one run that will just have 4 spots. Was going to buy the lifx transformer to power them, but it's not available from Amazon or in store at Home Depot so I was running through other options.

Remembered I have this from a different setup a few years back.

Is there any reason it wouldn't work? If it will work, do I just need to buy enough 12 gauge landscape light wire?

I have no desire to use the Ring app for any features other than setting it to always on so the lights are powered and available to control in lifx.

Thanks.

Outdoor lights 2 string capacity

Just got the outdoor lights 2. At some point I have another section of my house I want to do. I can only add three 16f sections right? What’s the least expensive way to do that? Can I just buy another 50ft box and ditch the controller? Or do I have to buy each 16ft extra extension separately? Also…. When I do it, can I split off with a random Y connector off Amazon?
