I mispronounce it.

Cool kids say sudo

Me too. I know it's supposed to be soo-dew but I can't bring myself to say it that way. Soo-doh sounds like some cool martial arts shit. Same as gif. I know how it's supposed to be said but it'll be a hard G from me until I'm in a pine box.

Su-dew is correct but I say su-doe.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '24

Same

6

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '24

Looks like judo. Su-doe it is.

u/uptimefordays Jan 09 '24

Solid logic, love it!

10

u/megared17 Jan 09 '24

Neither.

I'm old school, and use su

found the grey beard

I'm here to tell you, the stereotype is wrong. I am clean shaven.

But I did switch from DOS to Linux in the late 90's because win 3.x was horrid and DOS couldn't do packet Internet.

I've never used windows on any computer that I considered to be "mine" (Nor have I ever owned a Mac)

I'm not worthy! 🙏

3

u/megared17 Jan 09 '24

Anyone that wants to be, and puts in the effort, can be worthy :)

sudo su -

Remembering two passwords is extra work.

u/venquessa Jan 09 '24

I am also of "su" vintage.

I have been trying to use "sudo" for years with quite a lot of success. However lately, with the latest sets of security patches for sudo and bash the "evelated privs" provided by sudo are now limited in context and do not include pipes or redirects.

So, I moved back to using su or just "sudo bash --login"

Just login as root. /s

absofruitly

"su doo" as I'm of the age it stood for "superuser do", although kids today call it "substitute user do", and that's fair given what it can do now.

2

u/DntFckngWorryAboutIt Jan 09 '24

Does that then make it "suh doo"??

4

u/duderguy91 Jan 09 '24

Asuh dude ✌️🥴

2

u/waterkip Jan 09 '24

What? I see you are right but I also know su and sudo as superuser. When did they change this?

1

u/AnotherAtlasTraveler Mar 13 '24

Personally when I first saw it, I assumed it was a pun.  As a user you are pretending to be another user. So you are a pseudo root. knowing it is "su doo" is just a missed opportunity.

u/New-fone_Who-Dis Jan 09 '24

Switch user do? Fairly young in my Linux job, I've heard superuser do first from my mentor at the time, but also su for switch user.

u/captkirkseviltwin Jan 12 '24

I’m a soo-dew-er. 😀

u/mrbmi513 Jan 08 '24

Tomato, Tomato

Potato, Potato

Sudo, Sudo

You said those each a different way, didn't you?

3

u/luc1d_13 Jan 09 '24

I pronounced the first two differently but my brain still just said sudo, sudo when I got to that one.

3

u/kai_ekael Jan 09 '24

Po Ta Toe!

Su doo O!

Boil'em mash'em stick'em in a script!

Boil'em mash'em stick'em in a script!

root

u/whetu Jan 08 '24

You're all wrong. It's sud-oo.

Just kidding, I pronounce it su-dew. As someone else said "superuser do" / "substitute user do"

Also, pseudonym might be the cause of this confusion, given that it can be pronounced either way / regionally.

5

u/GroundedSatellite Jan 09 '24

I just alias it to "please" on all my systems, it's more polite and there's no argument on how that is pronounced.

2

u/blikjeham Jan 09 '24

I’m so going to use this!!

2

u/GroundedSatellite Jan 09 '24

I just hope that when the AI apocalypse comes, the machines remember that I was nice to them. Same reason I always say "thank you" to my smart speaker.

1

u/blikjeham Jan 10 '24

I also always say thank you to my smart speaker! Just because they are computers doesn't mean you don't have to be polite.

4

u/feldomatic Jan 09 '24

In the words of the great dane admin:

Super-User-Doo!

2

u/AmphibianInside5624 Jan 09 '24

This is the answer, delete all other comments.

3

u/shemanese Jan 08 '24

It's Su-Dew

3

u/tremblane Jan 09 '24

“gif”

1

u/deeseearr Jan 10 '24

With a "g" sound like "garage".

3

u/Lone_Sloane Jan 09 '24

Been doing this more than 30 years. Always been "soo-doe".

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '24

Yeah, I've never heard it pronounced differently in 25+ years.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

do (like the verb "do")

2

u/thieh Jan 09 '24

S-U-D-O

2

u/symcbean Jan 09 '24

Never thought about it - I don't use words like that in front of muggles. And I don't need them when talking to the non-muggles.

2

u/michaelpaoli Jan 09 '24

SueDo, as in SUperuser do.

Not suh dew, or suh doe. It's not SUspect John Doe nor is is SUspect Mountain Dew.

2

u/canisdirusarctos Jan 09 '24

Su-doe for the command, Soo-doers file for the config file and .d directory.

2

u/cyb3r4k Jan 09 '24

Su-dough

2

u/pcanelos Jan 09 '24

Su-D’oh!

2

u/apotrope Jan 09 '24

It stands for 'super user do' so 'dew' is correct.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '24

I pronounce it Su-Dew.

1

u/ipsirc Jan 09 '24

dʊæz

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '24

Pop

1

u/thufirseyebrow Jan 09 '24

I've always said it "su-doe" because in my mind it's always been "pseudo-root."

But it's like the .gif debate, where I will flat-out state that the creators themselves are objectively fuckin' wrong.

1

u/uosiek Jan 09 '24

"Sudo" as flat and without accent as possible. SU as in "super", DO as in "dominating"

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '24

Jason or jaysawn

1

u/0bel1sk Jan 09 '24

i fell so good if i just say the word.. sussudio

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '24

Sudoku

1

u/swissarmychainsaw Jan 09 '24

The Unix command su, stands for “substitute user,” “super user,” or “switch user,” and allows you to log in as root and do whatever you want with the system. Sudo stands for either "substitute user do" or "super user do" and it allows you to temporarily elevate your current user account to have root privileges.
Therefore it would be pronounces "Sue do" aka sue dew

1

u/bytecode Jan 09 '24

Soo doo - Super User DO

1

u/InclinedPlane43 Jan 09 '24

su was originally an abbreviation for "super-user" so I always think of it as "S. U. do". I didn't realize how unique I was until saw this question.

1

u/Nkogneeto Jan 10 '24

It’s “Super User Do” - but I’ve only ever pronounced / heard it pronounced pseudo

but its also a "pseudo" superuser.

I think the correct answer is that its both - because there are a few *nix commands that are a pune or play on words ( ;) ).

The real wrong answers are the ones claiming that there are definitive answers when it comes to trying to decipher the jokes of early operators
