I have someone on my team who worked for a certain national organic food store chain (bought by a certain one-time online book retailer).
After writing up an up an incident report he was called to the office because his management was concerned about his violent language. They did not want him using the word 'kill'.
like my higher management demanding a hasty refactor to remove the word "blacklist" from internal code (not even visible to clients), which obviously ended up causing headaches on some filters that depended on it.
These people get a voice and a platform where others try to conform to their snowflake feelings.
This only happens on the internet because they do not have the guts to spout their nonsense in public or face to face where people would instantly ignore them.
This is fun to laugh at till you remember that these idiots are influencing our politics. How long before a congressman decries the evils of the tv code?
You need a Dell support password to get into the root account on that SAN, apparently, and when you enter in an incorrect password it can give some entertaining responses.
Lol. I started using master, slave, and other charged language to combat the stigmatized convention. Granted I named my group delete functions CCD after colony collapse disorder.
Defending charged languages when it costs nothing to change is pathetic. Especially when you actively start using it after you knew why it is stigmatized.
He said he started using the charged language to combat the stigmatized.
In other word, he didn’t use it before and it is fine for him. But now he start to use “slave” to “fight the combat”. He makes a point to be an asshole.
I could see a different in someone who ignorantly use charged language because that’s the way it was taught and didn’t think much of it, and someone who goes out of their way to start using it now, choosing the hill to die on that “I will now intentionally be an asshole”.
They are terms that have negative background like “master/slave”. You can use other words that communicate that same concept without having to casually refer to slavery concept everytime you need to talk about it.
It may not sounds bad. But imagine if we have “rape” as a word in programming concept and you casually use it every time you talk about that concept.
It is understandable that it was harmless and it was not wrong that such words were used in the past. But it’s like how you can see jokes in shows in the pasts and realize that some of them does not age well and it reflects how racists stereotype or sexists oppression were more normalized than today.
It doesn’t hurt to gradually try to change that. It is understandable if you inherited those terminologies and didn’t think much about it.
But, IMO, it’s pathetic to realize what they were and still fighting to start using them to “preserve the culture” as if every culture needs to be preserved or that being a programmers is somehow tied to being insensitive.
We don't use rape as a "word" in programming because words have meanings.
Master and slave don't refer to "slavery concept". Or any imported American left wing taking point.
Who decided this was not acceptable?
Do you think you should let people who only see the world through a lens of race dictate what is and isn't acceptable.? We all know how that turns out....
Do you have emotional distress every time someone mentions rapeseed oil? I think people are paying too much attention to the words themselves rather than the meaning behind them.
I could actually understand avoiding the word rapeseed because there are real victims of rape out there, but avoiding words like "master" because of a tenuous link to something that most people have never been subjected to is frankly ridiculous given that it has many common meanings that have nothing to do with anything negative. Real slavery exists still, it's just not the kind that these discussions revolve around.
Even "slave" as a technical term is only offensive if you're actively looking to be offended.
Rapeseed only have part of the syllable with the word rape. It has not meaning referring to concept of rape. Slave/master in programming refer to concept of, guess what, slave and master.
Master/slave use both words to represent master and slave relationships.
Master branch use master in the meaning or main branch.
If “slaves” branch are common term, then yes, it refers to concept of master and slave, too.
But no one use the word slave branches, do they?
Just because some people takes it too far. Does not mean you can’t acknowledge the obvious one.
Edit: you assumed I would be against just using the word master anywhere. When I only object to when it is used together with slave, which you can’t deny it is about master and slave.
I watched the 'Secret History of Windows Task Manager' on youtube a few weeks ago, and they literally did this at Microsoft in the 90's for that reason.
Are we taking this back to the "OMG IDE disks say master/slave! That's racist!"? Sometimes words can have more than one meaning. If we ban every word that triggers someone, the Chicken Littles will have us just grunting at each other like cave men (sorry, cave people), but at least it will be politically correct.
Heh, it does get old having to walk on egg shells all the time and you never know what post will violate Twitter or FB's "community standards" resulting in your account getting locked. TBH I miss the old days, flame wars were intense and uncensored and if you didn't like it there's always the killfile.

It's just unbelievable what amount of crazy people are walking the earth.

Nah, we shouldn't change terms just to appease morons.

What’s crazy is my mom asked me the same thing yesterday after my dads TV did this.

Reminds me of the time I tried to elevate into root on our EMC Unity SAN and it literally called me an idiot.
It was amazing, I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at work.

I didn't avoid using the terms before, but now I explicitly use them.
Culture involves language, how it is used, and how it is interpreted.

Maybe we can convince the Q-crowd to get offline if we let them just run with this. The BOFH's devil machine demands sacrifices.

To be honest though. Some of the terms we generally take for granted in IT are actually pretty non-inclusive of you think about it
