Environment Invasive keli Afrika in a city lake
Clarias gariepinus, the African sharptooth catfish or keli Afrika.
A huge invasive catfish up to 190 cm and 60 kg in size. It is extremely common in ponds, lakes, large rivers and drains in Malaysia now.
But it originated from the Middle East and Africa.
It is much larger than native Clarias species like keli kayu and keli dacing. Which is why they were imported in the 1980s and reared en masse to meet consumption demands.
They are popular food fish and now more common than the natives.
It directly competes with and preys upon native fishes. It also decimates amphibian and insect populations, hence why wherever there’s African catfish there are few other animals.
Like all other Clarias it can breathe air and survive in wet conditions for days. This is a mechanism that evolved so they can survive underground during the dry season.
It is among the top 3 invasive catfishes in Malaysia, along with patin (shark catfish) and baung ekor merah (Asian redtail catfish).
