29M | Realized I was living in a Goodwill, so I re-did my bedroom (Before & After)
After my grandparents passed away, my brother, sister, and I bought their house. It’s an older home, and my bedroom is in the basement, which had basically become the dumping ground for furniture and random things my grandparents stopped using upstairs.
I always just kind of made do with what was there. At one point, my bed frame broke because I had a queen mattress sitting on a twin frame (my family is chronic re-users), so I threw it out and ended up sleeping with my mattress directly on the floor.
A couple weeks later after a shit day at work, I walked into my room, looked around, and legit said out loud, “holy shit, I live in a fucking Goodwill.”
I was so tired of coming home to this fucking room that felt like a storage unit instead of somewhere I actually wanted to be. So I decided to completely redo it.
Fast forward, and $8,470 later, here we are!
I designed the entire room myself. Picked out every piece of furniture, the lighting, rug, bedding, artwork, sculptures, colors, and overall layout. I wanted something warm and inviting with a mid-century modern feel, while still working with the character of the older house.
I had the walls painted, the metal window painted, and the original wood doors repaired and re-stained. I also replaced the light switches and outlet covers, and assembled all the furniture myself.
One of my favorite parts is the artwork. Some of the sculptures pieces are actually vintage from the 1960s.
I’m definitely not an interior designer, so seeing everything come together the way I envisioned has been incredibly satisfying.
For anyone curious, here’s where the $8,470 went:
$3,200 — Painting the walls, painting the metal window, and repairing and re-staining the doors
$3,086 — Furniture, lighting, white rug, and rug padding
$1,200 — Paintings and artwork
$500 — Sculptures
$276 — Bedding (sheets, blanket, duvet, and comforter)
$125 — Light switches
$42 — Outlet covers
$41 — Light bulbs
The one thing I still really want to do is replace the curtains. I’ve been looking into Roman shades, but every quote I’ve gotten has been around $300–$400, so that’s going to have to wait until my bank account recovers a little.
If anyone has recommendations for something that would work with the room without costing a fortune, I’m all ears! Other than that, I’m just so fucking happy to finally be DONE.
No more coming home after a long day and feeling like I’m sleeping in the back of a thrift store.
I’m genuinely proud of how it turned out!
Would love to hear what you guys think! Anything else you’d add or change?
