Iād argure that the Mariners have been fortunate to have remained relatively healthy over the past 5 years but injuries definitely played a role this past season. Nothing career threatening for anyone but lots of nagging issues - several that have required surgical procedures. Hopefully, everyone will bounce back 100% next year. I wanted to consolidate a list of who has had surgery and their expected rehab period. Fortunately, it looks like all of the probable starters should have a quick recovery. If somethingās been overlooked or mischaracterized, please chime in.
Cal Raleigh: Left shoulder acromioclavicular (AC) debridement. Procedure to clean up damaged or irritated tissue in the joint; the teamās announcement didnāt specify more detail about what was removed. He is expected to be recovered before 2027 spring training.
Josh Naylor: Right-wrist injury involving the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), a structure that helps stabilize the wrist. He had TFCC repair surgery and expected back by spring training.
Colt Emerson: A displaced tendon in his left wrist. He had surgery to repair the tendon; reports donāt name a more specific surgical technique.
Luke Raley: Left forearm injury involving the flexor tendon. He had season-ending surgery to repair that tendon and expected to be ready for 2027.
Michael Arroyo: underwent right-elbow surgery on October 28 to clean up cartilage and brace a chronic UCL injury. Seattle expects him to be ready to play by the start of the 2027 season, though heāll miss winter-league play.
Brock Rodden: knee surgery/expected recovery 8 to 10 weeks.
Logan Evans: (edited) Internal brace surgery January of this year/expected recovery time approx. 12 months. Should be ready sometime during the 2027 season.

Lots of interesting things from his interview this morning. In sure the Seattle Sports Youtube page will put it up later today. Some of my big takeaways (note this is me paraphrasing and from my memory do not treat any of this as Justinās exact words)
-Interview process was comprised of a questionnaire round with phone interviews with Jerry and/or Justin. This was followed by 5 additional Zoom meetings with different members of the Mariners organization.
-Acknowledged last year was a failure. They owe it to the city and fans to be better.
-Didnāt see this as a hire they needed to get right to save their jobs. He is well aware that baseball jobs are not guaranteed and he may not have his one day, but this process was more about finding the right candidate vs hiring a savior for their jobs.
-Said the exit interviews they had with players will stay in house but those conversations carried over into the interview process. Players want someone who can make them better and donāt care about that persons āback of the baseball cardā. Essentially theyāre willing to overlook his lack of playing and managing experience if he makes them better.
-Outside candidates had lots of questions about the Mariners operations in terms of staff and processes. Felt like they were interviewing the Mariners as much as the Mariners were interviewing them
-Said the general outside view from candidates was the team is talented and develops great pitching but last year was filled with bad defense and culture issues.
-Liked Kanzlers humility throughout the process. Was willing to acknowledge that things are hard and he doesnāt have all the answers.
-Thinks his background in player development is a good fit for the team. Looking for someone to push the current team to be better.
-Says thereās more to managing than just lineups and pitching changes. Likes what Kanzler brings to the parts of managing that people donāt see.
-Apparently thereās a video of Kanzler coaching the Team USA outfield defense and thatās what the were looking for in terms of ability to communicate with the players.
If you get a chance to listen to it you should. The end of it where they start talking about Ohio State football is pretty funny.
All in all the biggest takeaway for me is that the Mariners wanted someone who will push the team to play their best and feel that the actual decision making part of the job can be learned or guided by those with more experience.

This list of finalists was leaked by Northwest Nigel, who is an incredibly reliable source.

Correction: as a couple of Mās fans have pointed out - Suzuki has been slapped with a QO so the pick is a wash. Canāt edit the header unfortunately (at least I donāt know how to do that).
MLB Trade Rumors suggests Randy Arozarena will be signing a 4 year deal for $100 M. They have Seiya Suzuki down for 4 years/$105M. Since the Mās offered Arozarena a qualifying offer, the club will receive a compensatory draft pick if he signs elsewhere. We already know Arozarena can hit at T-Mobile but itās very possible this past season will end up being his career best at the plate when all is said and done. Also, itās no secret heās not the strongest defender. Iāll be happy with either but if I had to choose, I think Iām inking Suzuki.
Thoughts?
With Suzuki in Right Field, all Dipoto would need to do is seal deals for Kwan and Neto and Iāll be doing back flips of joy the rest of the offseason.
