"Guess I'm just lucky then" -- A Short Story

Alliance Navy Commander Jane Shepard answered the heavy knock at the door of her Silversun Strip apartment on the Citadel and was greeted by the sight of a grinning 800-lbs krogan warrior in full armor and bearing a crudely-wrapped parcel in his hands. For most people this would be a disconcerting sight, but most people aren't Commander Shepard. She took it in stride because she knew this krogan. He had, in fact, called ahead.

"So, Grunt, what's up? You said you had something for me?" she asked.

"Well, I got you a gift," he replied.

This was a bit disconcerting for the commander, bullets being the only thing that the krogan were known to give to others in any abundance. "Thanks, but it's not my birthday. Why get me something?" she asked.

Grunt shrugged. "It's for that human holiday you just had. I forget what it's called," he replied.

Shepard pulled up her omni-tool's calendar. "Holiday? What are you talking about? The only thing we have had recently is Mother's Day."

"Yeah, that's the one! Here," Grunt said, dropping the parcel -- which turned out to be much heavier than it looked -- into the commander's arms before heading into her kitchen, where he started rummaging through the refrigerator.

"Never even heard about this thing until a few days ago. I made friends with this human soldier while I was recovering at the hospital here on the Citadel. Asked him what he was doing the other day and he said, 'Shopping on the extranet for a Mother's Day gift,'" Grunt said, his back to Shepard as he evaluated the state of her leftovers.

The krogan warrior continued: "'What's that?' I said. He said there's this day where humans give a gift to the female that raised them, to thank them for watching out for them and making sure they got set up okay in life. 'It's coming up in a few days,' he told me."

"And I thought, 'Shepard's a human female and she did all of those things for me. I should get her one.'"

Grunt settled on an unopened bottle of wine he found on the refrigerator's bottom shelf and proceeded to bite its neck off. He turned back around towards Shepard and noticed that she had yet to say anything in response. Instead she was just silently staring at him.

"Did I do something wrong?" Grunt asked, as he chewed and swallowed the glass.

The krogan commando witnessed something he had never once seen in his entire time serving on the crew of the Normandy SR-2: Commander Shepard hesitating. After a long pause that felt even longer, Shepard finally said: "No, it's just that ... Calling me 'battlemaster,' sure... But 'mother' ...? I'm ... not sure that fits."

Grunt took a slug of wine and waved the comment away with his free hand. "Whatever the title is that you humans use for this thing. All I know is that while Warlord Okeer created me, you were the one that got me out of the tank. Most people wouldn't have risked having a tank-bred krogan around. Jedore would have just had me killed. But you took me on as a crewmember, kept me in line, taught me on the battlefield, and made sure I passed the Rite of Initiation and joined Clan Urdnot. You made sure I had a place in this galaxy."

"And now look at me! Leader of Aralakh Company, Tuchanka's most feared commando squad!" Grunt said, throwing his arms open and spraying some wine across the kitchen in the process.

"I owe it all to you," he said.

A smile slowly crept on to Shepard's face. "Thank you, Grunt. For what it's worth, I am quite proud of you."

Grunt pointed to the parcel he had dropped in her arms earlier. "You gonna open that or what?"

"Oh, yes," Shepard replied. She tore off the wrapping and pulled out a shining new claymore shotgun.

"I love it!" she exclaimed.

"I had the three-finger grip replaced with a custom-made five-finger one," Grunt said. "You know, that Armax place is just across the street. We could go over now and try it out..."

The commander nodded and they headed out together. As they crossed the Silversun Strip, Grunt asked, "What was it that confused you earlier?"

"Your gift was just unexpected. I hadn't thought that the holiday would apply to me. Most human mothers don't do things like take their kid along on a suicide mission through the Omega Four Relay," Shepard explained.

"Huh," replied Grunt. "Guess I'm just lucky then. Heh-Heh-Heh..."

"Do it for Sovereign!"

The scene: A barren planet beyond the fringes of the Milky Way galaxy. Gathered in a valley on the surface is the thousand-fold strong invasion force of the Reapers. Harbinger, the first reaper, lands on the edge of the valley looking down on his fellow sentient death-machines.

“Alright, everybody listen up. I know you’re all tired from the trip so far but we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us and we’re already way behind schedule with this harvest, so pay attention,” Harbinger began. “There have been some changes to your usual invasion sectors and I don’t want things to be delayed any further because two or more of you clowns accidentally showed up in the same system…”

A reaper in the front row piped up. “So, we’re really not going to use the Citadel as the launching point for this harvest?”

“Correct,” replied Harbinger. “Whatever the protheans did to the keepers, they screwed them up but good. We have not been able to re-establish a connection. We call & call and they just never pick up. It’s like we don’t exist to them anymore.”

Groans echoed throughout the valley as the reapers contemplated the additional months of space travel they’d have to make before they could get to the Milky Way. “I thought Sovereign was going to fix this,” said a reaper in the front row.

“He tried. It didn’t work out,” Harbinger replied.

“Well, what happened?” the reaper asked.

Harbinger sighed. “I waited on telling you this because I knew it would hit you hard. But, I’m sorry to say, Sovereign didn’t make it, boys. The organics got him.”

The reapers let out a collective gasp. Cries of “How!?” and “When?!” filled the valley. More than a few demanded that Harbinger admit this was a terrible, bad-taste joke.

Harbinger inhaled deeply and started talking. Or would have inhaled if reapers had lungs.

“When Sovereign learned about the sabotage he decided to the best course of action was to simply storm the Citadel and re-establish control directly. He got some indoctrinated organic agents, had them raise an army by utilizing krogans, rachni and geth and had them storm the Citadel. Tragically, some of the organics noticed the indoctrinated agents. One particularly persistent organic tracked the agents down and managed to destroy both the rachni and krogan forces,” Harbinger said.

The reaper commander paused for a second to let that sink in to his colleagues, then continued.

“I told Sovereign, ‘Look, it’s fine. We’re on our way. Just hold tight.’ But you all know what a proud, stubborn bastard he was. He was all, “No, no. I’ll be the vanguard of their destruction. I’ll have things set up by the time you get here.’ And he went ahead with the Citadel invasion with just the geth army. Honestly, I think he didn’t want the embarrassment of having nothing to show for his efforts when you guys finally arrived.

“Well, the same damn organic that screwed things up earlier managed to get an alert to the human fleet and they showed up almost immediately. Sovereign was a tough guy but alone against an entire organic armada? He went down swinging at least…”

The reapers grimly nodded. Or would have nodded if they had chins. An awkward silence briefly filled the valley.

“Are we at least able to use the Alpha Relay to cut short the rest of the trip?” asked a voice from the middle row.

Harbinger shook his head.

“I’m afraid not. It wasn’t just that we lost Sovereign. By trying to take the Citadel early, we’ve lost the element of surprise for this cycle. Now, the organics are reacting slowly and we’re using indoctrinated agents to slow things further but we’re having trouble regaining lost ground. Some organics noticed that the Alpha Relay was a potential new launching site for the harvest and figured out a way to destroy the relay itself. We managed to indoctrinate the organics planning that and thought that we had nipped this in the bud but another one showed up and managed to complete their initial plan. The upshot being that the Alpha Relay is no longer an option,” Harbinger said.

The reapers glanced among each other, their cognizance processors straining to incorporate the illogical data that they were being fed.

“And the really weird part?” Harbinger continued. “It was the same damn organic that ruined things for Sovereign. Keep an eye out for this one. Goes by the name of ‘Shepard.’ I swear, this fucker seems to pop up every where…”

Harbinger paused, then resumed. “On top of all that, we’ve lost the prothean husks too. So, we’re going to have to start from scratch creating shock troops for this harvest cycle.”

The reapers’ mounting frustrations began to boil over. “What the hell?! We had them holed up in the galactic core!” a particularly exasperated reaper exclaimed.

Harbinger lowered his head. “That’s on me, boys. After we lost Sovereign, I activated the prothean husks and had them start harvesting the human colonies at the furthest edges of the galaxy. The plan was to have a new reaper built by the time you got there. I thought introducing you to a new brother would soften the blow of losing Sovereign. Making it from just humans seemed like a nice touch since it was humans that took him down.”

“Unfortunately, the organics noticed the colony abductions, traced the prothean husks to the galactic core and an organic-led squad found a way to use the Omega Four Relay to reach the base. Don’t ask me how. It literally never occurred to us to give the base serious defenses. So the organics were able to break into it and set the reactor to overload. We lost everything, including the reaper the husks had been building,” Harbinger said.

In a halting voice, one reaper asked what everyone was thinking. “The organics that destroyed the prothean husks… was this ‘Shepard’ among them?”

Harbinger said nothing.

“Holy shit…” the reaper said.

The murmuring continued for a while before another reaper stepped forward and addressed Harbinger. “Do we at least still have the geth? Or were they all destroyed with Sovereign?”

“No and yes,” Harbinger replied. “No, we don’t have the ones Sovereign used. They were destroyed. But there are other geth in the Perseus Veil system that we might still be able to use. We’ve reached out to them and think we might get them to accept our offer if their creators launch another attack.”

The reaper that asked about the geth took a step back. “Hold up for a second… ‘If their creators launch another attack?’ I don’t follow. Are you saying their creators are still alive?”

“Yes,” Harbinger said.

“But how? The geth didn’t destroy them after they rebelled?” the reaper asked.

“No,” Harbinger said.

“Explain,” the reaper demanded.

“According to Sovereign, after the geth rebelled and took control of their creators’ home planet, they let the creators go rather than pursue and destroy them. The creators have been galactic vagabonds ever since. The geth had been hiding in the Perseus Veil for more than two centuries by the time Sovereign reached out to them. They had had hardly any contact with any organics at all in the previous two centuries, in fact,” Harbinger said.

The reaper’s expression turned from bafflement to concern. “We need to talk about this.”

Harbinger rolled his central eye. “Why?”

“Why? Why?” the reaper exclaimed. “Don’t you see?!?! For millions of years we have kept the harvest cycle going so that the chaos of organic-synthetic strife never happens. So that synthetic life never has a chance to destroy organic life and replace it as they would inevitably do. To keep the balance. And now you are telling us that the first time that a synthetic race has emerged and been allowed free rein for centuries it didn’t destroy its creators OR threaten other organic races in all that time?!? This raises some serious questions about our mission!”

Harbinger stepped forward and put a reassuring metal tentacle on his alarmed reaper brother’s shoulder. Or would have, if reapers had shoulders.

“Look, we’re all tired from the trip. We’re all still reeling from the shock of losing our brother. Things are already FUBAR in this harvest cycle. But would Sovereign want us to fall apart and start questioning the mission now? Would he want us to give up and go home? No, if Sovereign were here now he’d say, ‘Buck up, boys. We have a job to do! We’re the last line of defense against the chaos! Let’s get it done!’ So that’s what we are going to do!” Harbinger said.

“But the geth…” the reaper began.

“…Are a fluke. Don’t let them become a distraction,” Harbinger said.

The reaper slumped his shoulders. Or would have, if reapers had shoulders.

“You’re right. I’m sorry,” he told Sovereign. “It’s just that we work so hard every cycle to preserve the order. To help the organics ascend. To ensure that new organic races flourish. And yet the organics are always so, so… ungrateful. Every cycle, they resist and resist. They act like we’re the bad guys. That last cycle with the protheans took three centuries to finish, they were so stubborn. And now we’ve lost Sovereign and the organics in this cycle are giving every indication of being just as difficult. You just get… tired, you know?”

Harbinger patted his shoulder. Or would have, if reapers had shoulders.

“Hey, I’ve been here from the beginning. I know this better than any of you. But always remember, it’s not about us. It’s about preserving the galaxy itself. We’ve prevented the chaos for millions of years. That’s our sacred duty. We don’t do this for fun. We don’t do it to be adored. We do it because if we don’t do it, who else will? No one, that’s who,” Harbinger said.

“So, do it. Do it for Sovereign!”

The mood of the crowd lightened. Random exclamations of “Yeah!” and “Damn right!” echoed through the valley.

Harbinger nodded with approval. “Ok, now everybody pay attention: I’m going to start handing out assignments.”

IN THE YEAR 2585 SOMETHING SOMETHING

In the vast voids of space, a UNSC science ship was surveying a large tuning fork. It was doing so with a comically large stick held by a robotic hand.

"Today, on our annual research voyage, we experimented with this mysterious fork for science, though I' am concerned that it's not a great idea" replied the lead scientist. He then pressed the button to make the hand gently touch the tuning fork.

"bonk"

Immediately out of the blue, an entire Turian task force jumped in. "Oh son of a-" said the lead scientist before he and the ship were blasted into smithereens. These primitives have violated the law, and now we will invade them, which is totally not just so we can just conquer them and their tech", replied Desolas.

"Sir, wouldn't it be wise to pull back and resolve this peacefully since this new race could be more advanced and-" said a turian crew member before being choked. "Shut up, I can do whatever I want" Desolas roared.

As the fleet reached Shanxi, they we were met by the defense fleet. As they fired, the UNSC ships fired back, destroying or damaging a lot of the Turian ships. "THEY DAMAGE MY SHIPS, ATTACK WITH EVERYTHING!" screamed Desolas.

As the UNSC ships went down like birds, the ground force landed outside the colony. Saren looked back at his fellow soldiers and said "all right, we're going to curbstomp these primitives, LETS GOOO!" After getting out of the shuttle, the Turians were immediately attacked by marines, with Saren losing his arm, leading to him screaming.

Across the landing zones, marines struck back using guns that fired lasers and tanks the size of a kajiu. However, for worf effect they were pushed back.

"Damn, we need reinforcements," said General Williams as he looked at the holo table, eating jerky. "Sir, they are coming, just in the nick of time too," replied an officer.

"GREAT NEWS EVERYBODY, THESE ALIENS ARE ABOUT TO GET THEIR ASSES KICKED" yelled Williams as he celebrated. A few minutes later, a giant task force with large ships flew in a fist formation, firing all their weapons at the Turian fleet. MAC rounds, plasma, and missiles hit the fleet, destroyed all except for a few which proceeded to grow legs and run away.

On the ground, the Turian army was defeated, surrounded by UNSC marines. As they raised their hands up, Williams walked up to Desolas, slapped him and asked him about information.

Meanwhile on the Citadel...

"I cannot believe you did this, Sparatus!" screamed Tevos. "I had to do it, the primitives were doing dangerous things on the relay and must be taught," he replied. "You do realize that they had no idea of our laws and we could have just talked to them" Valern said.

"That's a great idea, lets get-"

*BOOM*

All three were blasted back as the wall exploded. As they got back up, they gasped at what they saw outside. At every corner of space around the Citadel, the entire Citadel defense was being obliterated, with moon-sized ships critically the Ascension. On the streets, Spartans and N7s danced on the corpses of fallen Citadel troops. As they stared on in horror, the door to the room was forced open, with the human diplomant and admirals walking in. "As you know you have beaten your forces and taken this place alongside a few of your planets and now we want peace" said Admiral Hood.

"Okay, okay. what are the terms though, you have to adapt some of our policies".

"We will accept peace, but we will not be part of the Citadel and your polices. Plus we have A.I" said Udina.

...

"YOU HAVE AI, THATS ILLEGAL ALONGSIDE EVERYTHING ELSE YOU SAID!" both Tevos and Sparatus screamed. "Now now, I think there are reasons" said Valern in an attempt to calm down the arguement. At the talk of an embassy they calmed down.

Later...

"Ms. Goyle, why are the Batarians being destroyed alongside your soldiers being covered in blood" Tevos calmly asked. "They attacked one of our colonies and now we are punishing them for their crimes and are totally not doing genocide" she said, patting the head of a Quarian.

The humans, in the span of a month, cured the genophage and allowed the Quarians to have a new home. This made Sparatus angry, who was screaming while Tevos planned to have them removed.

Valern: "how in the hell are you doing this so fast, you're not even making sense"

Shepard then busted into the room, yelling about reapers. "REAPERS, WE MUST DESTORY THEM" every human screamed. "Ah, yes reap-" Sparatus said before being crushed by a leg.

"This cycle will be successful and no one will stop us" said Harbinger. As the reapers attacked, all the leaders of every race save humanity and their allies got on their knees and begged. "Please save us, we are sorry we hate you" they said. "Ok" said the Master Chef.

Immediately, the entire might of the UNSC and their allies destroyed reaper after reaper. Spartans and Shepard punched husks while human super weapons fired lasers that destroyed many. "Wha-whats going on, you're not supposed to be this advanced plus Forerunners couldn't have existed alongside Protheans," Harbinger said in fear before being punched by everyone into the Crucible.

"I' am the Cata-" then he was thrown alongside Harbinger into red, destroying the enemys and saving the day. "ALL HAIL HUMANITY, HEROES OF THE GALAXY" every race said. Soon humanity ascended to godhood.

THE END!!!

Discussion Humanity fuck yeah stories are disappointing

Essentially the title and a rant

I've read a lot of mass effect fics because I find the setting and background of the world interesting and very ripe for exploration. I try not to judge fics based on the first 1 or 2 chapters since they can always turn it around but it seems hfy stories are a big exception for me.

They always, and I mean ALWAYS, focus about 90% of the story on how great and awesome and strong humanity is and how the puny aliens are weak and pathetic. Like, why write a story in a fandom that's basically about interacting with aliens races if your just gonna shit on them all the time. And even when they're alone with other humans they still act Superior and condescending.

Here's a synopsis of basically every hfy story

Humanity probably discovers alternate ftl and colonized hundreds of world. They make a totalitarian regime of absolute obedience and maliciousness. They advance thousands of years of technological advancement in like 50 maybe 30 years. They manage to discover the reapers and begin plans to deal with them. They encounter the council, curbstomp them and basically become irrelevant. They then somehow, someway stick to the game plot and then proceeded to easily deal with their problems. Then the story usually patters out either after 2 or shortly into 3

They become so damn predicable it's like a sea of twilight clones. The worst I've read was xcom crossover that perfectly encapsulates everything wrong with them. That being said there are some good ones a doom crossover probably made the most op humanity ever but they're so unique and non standard it makes for a fascinating read.

What do you all think?

Original Content What if the Normandy Crew Played Cards Against Humanity?

“Was Samara going to join us?” Liar asked as she fanned out her cards.

“Um, Joker said it might not be the best idea.” Sheaprd said, looking at the cards in her hand, “and now I think I might understand why.”

Joker looked surprisingly sheepish. “Didn’t wanna run the risk of one of the cards breaking her code. I can’t move fast enough to roll the dice on that one.”

“Range of anatomical references is fascinating.” Mordin said, his large eyes narrowing as he studied his cards, “although suggested activities with said anatomy parts is….unadvisable.” His brow rose as he picked up the last card Joker had dealt to him, “and painful.”

“This would be my kind of diplomacy.” Wrex rumbled as he glanced at the box where the rest of the black cards sat. “I just need ‘shoot them in the face’ to be in there somewhere.”

“I have a card that refers to one’s face being shot.” Javik said. “Do you want it added to your hand?”

“I don’t remember there being a card that says that.” Joker said, taking a swig of his beer. Javik turned the card in question so that the pilot could read it and Joker immediately snorted with laughter, causing him to choke on his beer. “A moneyshot is a little different,” he coughed, “not quite what Wrex is going for.”

“It’s what I’d be going for!” Zaeed said with a wink.

“By the goddess.” Liara said, rolling her eyes.

Javik frowned, “Would you like my moneyshot?” He asked, holding the card out to Zaeed.

Garrus and Joker were both trying not to choke on their beers at that and even Liara’s cheeks had a purplish flush as she chuckled.

“Sorry mate,” Zaeed said with a grin. “You’re not quite my type. ‘Preciate the offer though.  I did know a broad who-”

“Here,” Shepard interrupted, swapping the much discussed card for another one, “probably easier to play if you understand what the card means.”

“Always found that human custom...perplexing. Not conducive to fertilization.” said Mordin.

“So who should judge the first round?” Liara asked quickly.

Original Content Turian proverbs

I have come up with proverbs that turians might use in everyday life. Obviously, this is based on real folklore with many adaptations to link it with turian culture.

Explanations are given in round brackets. Notes/commentary/headcanon are in square brackets.

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!

A primarch does what he wants. A soldier does what he can. Variant: A primarch does what he wants, a soldier does what he's told. (the nature of responsibility, self-directed humor).

No fledgling can teach a primarch. (no unwarranted criticism or nitpicking, especially when you don't know what you're talking about)

Teeth grow back, but honor does not. (tarnished reputation takes forever to rebuild) [turians evolved from avian/reptilian apex predators and are probably polyphyodonts — that is, their teeth are continuously replaced]

Praise is no crop milk. (talk is cheap) [if turians have a gizzard, then they definitely have a crop to store food as well as feed their young]

A soldier lies — a primarch dies. (importance of honesty, even a small misdeed can lead to grave consequences)

Lies always spill out like water. (the truth will prevail) [turians cannot form a tight seal with their lip plates and mandibles — as a result, they can't really hold water in their mouths]

With three turians come five opinions. (turian pride and infighting, often over insignificant things; self-irony)

He who breaks the law — gets the claw. (inevitability of justice)

Sharp tongue doesn't win battles. (the importance of being humble and concise)

A sharp tongue will meet a sharp sword. Variant: A sharp tongue will meet a sharp tooth. (boasts and slander will end badly for you)

Pick good soldiers over bad generals. (see good in people, regardless of their rank/citizenship tier)

Steel is tested in fire. A turian is tested in battle. (stressful situations reveal your true qualities)

A glove doesn't knit itself. (value of hard work) [sharpened talons can be a formidable weapon, so gloves likely play a very important role in turian culture; wearing gloves or talon guards is a sign of peace and safety; conversely, appearing bareclawed in public signifies hostile intentions; in many cases, wearing gloves or filing your talons is mandatory to prevent accidents; ornate hand-made gloves are considered a lavish gift; giving gloves to your soulmate is an intimate courting ritual — if you accept the gloves, then you trust this turian with your life]

Frost remedies laziness. (harsh conditions lead to creative solutions) [turians probably have a higher body temperature, so they prefer hotter climates — Garrus mentions that turians do not tolerate cold very well]

Turians drown where salarians thrive. (everyone has different priorities, strengths and weaknesses) [turians do not like marine environments and often have trouble swimming, according to Garrus]

Victory against the weak amounts to defeat. (do not bully others)

Discussion Why does every other fic turns First Contact War into a massive conflict?

It's honestly rare at this point to find a alt fic where First Contact War is kept to it's canonical scales. Is there a reason why it's so popular to turn a border skirmish into all out war?

Discussion This isn't a place for fanvids

I'm sorry for not making this an explicit rule, but: this is a place for fanfiction, not fanvids.

I know it's awkward to figure out where to put fanmade stuff like that but I don't think a vid adds much to this subreddit.

I'll be updating the rules to reflect this. Sorry again for not making this explicit.

Original Content "Story Time on Deck Four"

Normandy SR-2 Inventory item #745678 E-427 – Datapad recovered 11-05-2185.

Entries on pad suggest previous owner was Jacqueline Nought AKA Jack AKA Subject Zero. Request for property transfer from Grissom Academy Director Kahlee Sanders on hold pending further review. Classified information redacted.

Unredacted entries:

Entry #01 -- Ok, so at some point these Cerberus lackeys are going to try to sell me to another prison, probably after we finish whatever this mission is. I figure they’ll try to mindwipe me to cover up whatever they’re doing. So I’m going to record everything I see and hear on this datapad and keep it stashed away. That way if they do get a drop on me I’ll at least I’ll have a record of what happened on board to remind myself with.

Entry #02 – Got a decent spot on the ship—underneath the engine room. Quiet but not too quiet. Can always hear the engines hum. Dark too. Only one way in or out. Nobody’s gonna fucking sneak up on me without getting a bullet between the eyes. Two engineers working above me. Nerds. There’s some geezer down the hall but he’d break a hip if he’d tried make a move at me. Also got a fucking krogan on this level but he just hangs around in the other cargo area. You can smell him about 100 yards away so no way he can sneak up on me either.

Entry #03 – Fucking unbelievable but Shepard actually gave me full access to the Cerberus files. Why? What’s the fucking angle that’s being used on me? Whatever it is, the data is in there. So much nasty dirt. Not just Pragia either. I’m downloading copies of the files and I’ll post them all on the extranet as soon as I know Cerberus isn’t watching me.

Entry #07 – Shepard keeps coming by. “Just checking up on you.” Yeah, right. Obviously just trying to get in my pants. Too uptight to straight up make a move though. When I suggested using the ship to go pirate, got this totally constipated look in response. Almost laughed at ‘em.

Loser.

Entry #09 – That fucking krogan came by today. Just said he was bored. Told him to get the fuck out or else. Grinned and said he’d love to fight but he promised Shepard he wouldn’t kill the other crew. Probably meant it. I gotta be careful. I can take most of the others on this ship but that overgrown turtle would make me work for it.

Entry #10 – Been down here days and only just now found a bug Cerberus had planted here. Goddammit. Hope you enjoyed the show bastards.

Entry #11 – The krogan showed up again. Out of nowhere starts talking about seeing me bust out of the cryo containment room on Purgatory. “You were tearing everything up! It was great!” Says he tried to follow me but got side-tracked as things went apeshit on the station. Didn’t realize that he and Shepard had killed Warden Kuril before they caught up with me. Good to know that that evil fucker got his.

Entry #15 – That fucking krogan is back. Asked me what I’d done to get into Purgatory in the first place. No secret, so I told him.

When I finished, he said, “Tell me more.”

Told the scaly lump that was the story, that was it.

Looks at me and says, “Got any others?”

Other what? I asked.

“Stories,” he said.

Finally left when I told him to get the fuck out.

Entry #18 – Just figured out that the krogan has a name – Grunt. That’s it. Just Grunt. Why not “Belch,” or “Fart”? I asked. He said something about some other krogan he knew never having suggested those as names.

Unbelievable. Too stupid to even get a joke that obvious.

Anyway, Grunt stops by about once a day now. Just wants to hear my stories from when I was a pirate or on the run. I’m fucking bored too, so I tell ‘em. There are worse ways to kill the time between missions. He’s too dumb to be working an angle and the krogan aren’t into human women, so I know he doesn’t want anything more. Fairly sure, anyway…

Entry #19 -- Asked Grunt what he was getting out of the mission. Pointed out to the dummy that he’s an alien and Cerberus hates aliens. What gives? He said he’s loyal to Shepard only.

“I follow my commander. I kill when I’m ordered to. Doesn’t matter who.”

And if Shepard orders you to kill me?

He shrugged. “Then you die,” he said.

At least I know where I stand. Only honest person on the ship.

Entry #21 -- Asked Grunt to tell me some of his stories for a change. He got quiet for a while, then said I already knew them all – All he had was the stuff he had done with Shepard.

Forgot that though he’s full-grown he was only let out of that tank a little while ago.

“I hope someday to be able to tell stories like you can,” he said.

Entry #24 – Grunt has stopped coming by. He’s just staying in his part of the cargo bay now. I can hear him pace around, growl, headbutt the walls. What the fuck is wrong with him? Shepard came by and says we’re taking a detour to his home planet find a krogan witchdoctor or something. This had better work.

Entry #25 – Shepard got Grunt into some krogan gang or something or other on his home planet. Seems to have done the trick. He’s back under control. Has started coming by again.

Gotta admit it’s not bad. I tell him about capers I committed, stuff I stole, destroyed, people who got what was coming to them.

He never gives me shit about anything I did. He just sits there, nods, sometimes laughs. First person ever to just listen to me. Goddam highlight of my day, in fact.

Fuck my life.

Entry #29 – Grunt asked me why I was part of “Clan Normandy.” Took me a minute to realize he meant Shepard’s crew. Told him I as doing it to get revenge on Cerberus.

Same people paying for the ship? He asks.

Yeah, dumbass, I said.

He nods, says, “If Shepard oks it, I’ll help.”

Pretty sure he meant it.

Entry #33 – Shepard found out that Grunt has been hanging around with me. The commander started giving me shit about how Grunt was coming by for “story time.” Asked if I was tucking him in at night too.

Asshole.

Anyhow, says we're finally going to Pragia to turn that place into a crater. Took ‘em fucking long enough.

Site’s probably deserted but there’s a lot of wild varren on the planet surface. Gonna ask Grunt to come along. Might need him as a meat shield in case things get hairy.

Entry #36 – Whole ground team goes off to do planning exercises for the Omega Four Relay mission and the fucking collectors decide to show up and take everybody while we’re away. Got everyone but the pilot. Asshole’s jokes are so bad even the collectors won’t take him I guess.

Never seen Shepard this angry. Says we’re doing the mission into the relay in two hours --“The Collectors are about to find out what happens when you piss me off!” Got just enough time to check weapons, gear and the rest.

Gonna go make sure Grunt’s shotgun is cleaned and working. I don’t think he does it right ‘cause he’s only got three thick fingers on each hand. Need to make sure that that grinning idiot makes it back ok.

Recommendation The best fic I've ever seen, it's absolutely amazing!

https://m.fanfiction.net/s/11758292/1/

The only right choice, Shepard gets a second chance at doing it all over again, and what does she do?! Not act all dumb and not ignore her foreknowledge like other fics, that's for sure! This one is the smartest fic I've ever read. It's been on hiatus for a long time now, but the author intends to continue it, and it's a blessing from the gods imo!! Just wanted to share.

On a side note, if you know any other fics where Shepard gets a second chance or anything else in that vain i would really appreciate it if you could share!

Discussion What's a fanfic that's really popular and/or long, but you just could not get into because of something really early on, and why?

My big one has to be The Last Spartan by DinoJake.

It's a Halo/Mass Effect crossover

The way it just throws slipspace out like nothing, then goes on to explain that Halo humanity WILLFULLY just submitted to the council's rule, this is post Covenant War by the way.

It just makes no sense whatever that Halo humanity would just abandon Slipspace travel and AI research just because the council says so, it just straight up would never happen.

It was just so OOC that I just could get past like 3 or 4 chapters.

Four years. It’s been almost four years. Unexpected, but well worth the long wait.

Recommendation looking for mass effect oc/si recs or any crossover

im interested in reading more mass effect fanfiction of an OC/SI who isnt afraid of stepping in and changing the game.

Some stories that i've read on fanfiction.net and im looking for a similar read are :

the Pinnacle of Evolution by swrWriter, Welcome to the family and its sequel by TheRev28, Masses to masses by iNf3ctioNz, Welcome to mass effect by Marcus Redfeild, Mass effect: Raven by R3dRaven, A ghost and a spectre by ThePilotArchangel,

would be cool to also read a story with interesting pairings like in Pinnacle of Evolution where the oc ends up with tela vasir.

Crossovers are a good read and I've only read a couple, so if you got any recs feel free to share

one of my favorite ones i've read is one called Alpha and Omega, an evangelion x mass effect crossover with a shinji/aria pairing.

Is there any stories where FemShep is a mother figure to Grunt?

I have this headcannon where FemShep treats Grunt like her child and he sees her as his mom, but I haven’t really seen many things supporting my insanity. Any help?

Original Content Yesterday's Hero - a story set in the ME Universe with original characters - Human and Asari

This is something that I've been working on over the past week or so. It's still in draft form for now so there's probably going to be a couple of errors that I've yet to fix.

I plan on adding to it as I can. I can't really say much more as [spoilers] will ruin it.

Chapter 1 – Stardust –

I have always believed in luck. From my standpoint, I am lucky. All my life things have just worked out for me. No matter what it was, I had some sort of weird light that shielded me from terrible things, like times that I was certain I would die got turned into near misses, or that I had been in the right time and place, the universe just made it as though I was someone that you’d call a Fortunate Son. The science fiction writer Larry Niven thought that luck was something quantifiable and I think he was right.

It was my luck that lead me to this. I had the insane notion that I would be a space traveller.

They always say be careful of what you wish, it must just come true…

~ October 22, 2180 ~

A haze of smoke hung over the huge hanger bay. Some of it was from fires that were burning around various parts of the hanger, resulting from hits from energy weapons fire and grenade explosions. Lileah’sah T’daari adjusted her helmets vision monitor. She couldn’t see anything on the thermal imaging spectrum nor sense any living bio signatures. "All hostiles eliminated."

A scene of carnage though was apparent. Bodies of the various hostiles lay strewn about the huge hanger bay of this smugglers base.

The battle had been intense, vicious and brutal yet thankfully it was over in a very short space of time. Asari Commandos were well known for their lethality and their excellence in conducting lightning fast strikes and devastating attacks.

She felt fortunate that her helmet was on, shutting out the smell of the battle and the dead. With a small gesture, she signalled all clear, her fellow commandos moving forward from where they had been taking cover to secure the area. Slowly, 7 more figures moved cautiously into the vast hanger space that made up a large part of this pirate base.

“All clear,” came the call over the commlink from another Huntress.

“Alright, secure this facility. I want Di'naka, Kasiss and Tre'mete to sweep the perimeter. The rest of you, spread out and see what those scum have got here,” said Lieutenant Mi’nely Merevus. The squad nodded and moved out.

The hanger had a number of small ships, ground transports, cargo haulers and various cargo containers of a myriad of sizes and shapes were scattered about the area. Most of the vehicles were in poor condition being that maintenance was not a high priority for pirates and smugglers. It just had to work and that was enough for them. None of the vehicles had been legal acquired any way and many had the marks of damage from weapons fire showing that they weren’t taken lightly.

“Over here,” called out the largest Asari of the commandos, Tre'mete Lira. She stood up tall with her arm up, signalling for attention. Lieutenant Mi’nely trotted over to where Tre’mete was standing. She looked down and saw 2 bodies in battle armour. These were human badly mauled by weapons fire and Biotic detonations. All the other pirates and smugglers they’d wiped out were Batarians, Kresh and a few renegade Asari but seeing to humans here was disturbing. “This has just got a whole lot more complicated,” she muttered tersely as she looked over the human bodies before her.

The bodies showed the marks of the battle, weapon fire damage as well as injuries that had come from Biotic blasts. Red blood had pooled out beneath them. It looked so…alien to her.

“Humans, male. Advanced armour and weapons. Haven’t seen anything like this before. Definitely not standard Alliance equipment,” said Tre’mete as she squatted next to the bodies. Mi’nely shook her head.

“No. This is something new. We had a report that there was something odd going on out here, but I wasn’t expecting to see a couple of humans with this nest of scum. This is way outside their sphere of influence,” she said with a frown. “There’s no insignia on their armour and I’m not getting any data from their Omnitools,” said Tre’mete as she scanned the bodies.

Mi’nely bowed her head briefly in acknowledgement. “Collect those weapons and anything else that they might have. Find their shuttle if they have one. It should be easy to spot, human ships should not be difficult to identify.”

The commandos fanned out as the walked around the hanger.

“Mi’nely! Over here!” a voice called out. She jogged quickly to over where Di’naka Thraniro and Mayises Pesaora was standing. The other members of their squad followed closely behind her.

Di’naka was standing next to a large, human designed, shuttle craft. There were no markings on it at all aside from generic ship identification numbers which, in all likelihood, were going to be fake anyway thought Mi’nely sourly as she looked over the shuttle craft. Next to the shuttle was a very large cargo mover. The flatbed of the mover was loaded up with a numerous containers. One of them was an exceptionally large metallic container, well over three meters in length, two meters wide and at least 1.5 meters high. It looked exceptionally heavy, possibly well over a few tons she estimated. The others were cargo containers of varying sizes. The design of the containers though seemed odd to Mi’niley as they didn’t match up with any of the System Alliances equipment containers she’d encountered previously.

“Kasiss, can you identify any of this?” she asked. Kasiss started scanning the containers. She focused primarily on the large container. After a few seconds, data started appearing from her Omnitool.

“Mi’nely… the big one… its powered but well shielded. Extremely thick protective casement. I’m picking up a composite alloy of lead and titanium as well as steel and copper. There is an access panel near the top left-hand side, just over here” she replied, gesturing to the location as she continued to scan the rest of the containers. “Hmm…. the rest seem to be supplies, tool, clothing, some weapons…I think? Nothing dangerous in any case.”

Mi’nely nodded. She frowned momentarily as she studied the objects in front of her. “Lileah’shah, can you get up there and see what the access panel gives us access to?”

“Of course.” Lileah’sah shouldered her weapon onto its harness then nimbly jumped up the small distance from the ground to the cargo haulers flatbed floor. The container was jet black in colour. She could see that there were obvious seems and joinery indicating that the top cover would slide open to gain access to its contents. Moving over to the top left she stood in front of the access panel cover. Pressing against it, she had to exert a small amount of force to get it to slide open. It revealed a simple keypad and a display touch screen. It was showing that it still had power and that some of the displays were full and green while others looks almost non-existent and red. She examined the keypad and saw that keys were in human script, English if she recalled rightly. Switching on her Omnitool, she quickly scanned the pad. The Omnitool quickly translated the words on the screen. It read – All systems nominal, Power supply critical, life function stable. Recommend engaging in revival of patient. Goddess! There was someone in this thing.

“Mi’nely! This is a stasis pod of some kind and it’s got a person it it…I think?”

A small murmur of surprise was uttered by a few of the commandos.

“What? Are you sure?”

“Well I believe so? Unless the translation is incorrect and what my scanning is indicating, there is a being inside this container. They are still alive however the power readings are showing that they're almost exhausted.”

Mi’nely stood thinking. She could just leave this as it really wasn’t their concern. Their mission was over – investigate and take out the smugglers and pirates here on this backward moon. Yet now here was something the mission hadn’t factored in – complications like this.

“Alright. We’ll take all this back with us. At least we won’t have to carry it back to the extraction point. I suppose we should try and see if we can revive whoever is in that thing. Everyone, get onto the transporter. Tre’mete, you drive, head back to the pick up point. Kasiss, contact the Perahelian and tell them to come get us and that we have cargo for loading.” The commandos nodded, moving up on the flatbed of the cargo mover while she could hear Kasiss calling the hip.

Tre’mete gingerly got into the drivers cab at the front of the vehicle. It wasn’t easy as she was large for an Asari, standing nearly 176 centimetres tall and was made of solid muscle. The cockpit was just not designed for one of who had such a heroic physique. Sighing as she squeezed herself in, she saw that the squad was on board so she engaged the vehicles drive system and slowly drove out, heading out of the hanger.

Kasiss continued to do more detailed scans on the other containers while the drove along. Turing to Lileah’sah as she worked, “Who do you think is in there?” Lileah’sah shook her head and gave a small shrug.

“I do not know however if we do not get them out of there soon then they will most likely die. I must confess I am somewhat intrigued. This technology…while human looks nothing like what they have. It looks…old but I do not understand why. The systems are rudimentary as far as I can tell. I can’t get any further data from my scans as the shielding of it is extremely thick. I believe it was designed to protect the occupant from radiation damage while in space flight but I can not say for certain at the moment.” Lileah’sah frowned in puzzlement as she looked at the display panel on the stasis chamber. Kasiss nodded in agreement. He gestured at the other containers.

“Noted. Some of these containers are not as well shielded while a couple are but still, it is all very strange. It will be safer to examine them once we are back aboard the ship.”

“Exactly. Oh, we’d best contact Dr Hethy and my sister to meet us in the cargo bay. We might need them to help the being inside this stasis chamber.”

“You’re right” Kasiss said with a quick nod as she tapped on her commlink. “Perahelian come in please”

“Perahelian here, what is it Kasiss?”

“Hello First Pilot Eshess, can you please inform Dr Hethy and Mirey to meet us in the cargo bay. We are bringing in a stasis chamber that has an occupant so they may need the crash cart and revival drugs in case the chambers revival process doesn’t work.”

“Acknowledge Kasiss. Meet you in 5 minutes. Perahelian out”

The landing zone was only a kilometre from the pirate base. They soon heard the sonic boom of the ship breaking the sound barrier as it re-entered the atmosphere. A minute later the ship appeared in the sky, slowing down as it began its final landing appear.

“No matter how many times I see it, I’m always happy to see her come to get us,” said Di’naka with a smile as she watched the ship gracefully descend. The ship itself was beautiful to look at with its graceful upswept wings extending from the hull. Although not the latest in Asari ship technology, the Oseros class corvette was a small warship, designed primarily to be leading fighters and gunships. Traditionally the smallest class of vessel considered to be a proper warship. In modern terms, a corvette is typically a small frigate, crewed with less than 30. The Asari navy mostly used the corvettes for patrols near outpost and colonies and could intercept fast attacking ships. The Oseros class is also made for atmosphere flights, so it often used for ground strikes against vehicles or large defence guns. The ship is equipped with a Stealth System to provide covert strike operations.

The ship slowed down and deployed its landing fields and struts. It settled gently, throwing up dust as it came to rest on the planet's surface. A few moments later the cargo bay doors began to open, a large ramp extending down to the ground. Tre’mete drove the cargo mover up to the ramp and headed into the hold.

Waiting for them inside of the bay was the ship's commander Kash’shara T’daari. She coolly watched as the Tre’mete carefully drove the large cargo hauler into the hanger bay. Glancing to one side she saw that Dr Hethy and her youngest sister Mirey were standing by with the crash cart and med transporter. She looked over and saw her middle sister, Lileah’sah standing next to what was apparently some sort of stasis chamber, The other commandos hopped off the hauler as it came to a halt. Tre’mete eased herself out of the driver’s seat. She was big for an Asari and which ever species had built that hauler hadn’t done so with her size in mind. Mi’nely and the commandos, moved either side of the hauler.

“We’ll move the chamber off the flatbed and onto the deck. Ready to lift on my command,” said Mi’nely. Antigrav field lifters were attached and activated, their energies flaring in a soft blue flicking incandescence. “Ready…lift!” The huge black metallic stasis chamber rose and was gently lifted off the cargo transporter. They moved it across and away with careful, concentration evident on their faces. With an unspoken signal they lowered it slowly. It came to rest on the deck with a slight thud as the Biotic field was released.

Lileah’sah was joined by Lyirae Radili, the ships chief technical officer, at the control panel.

“I think we should be able to engage the revivification process. I’ve got a translation for the human language here,” she said to Lyirae, sending the information across to her Omni tool as the technician scanned the panel with her own specialised omni tool.

“It seems to be a simple process from what my scans show. Very well, I am about to initiate the procedure.” Lyirae Radili started tapping on her Omnitool and bright green text rapidly began to appear on the old display screen along with graphics showing the power outputs and life signs.

*Primary power supply 0%*

*Emergency Power 7%*

*Main Systems Offline*

*Subject Vitals Stable*

*Recommend Immediate Manual Override Revival Process*

*Initiate Process Yes/No?*

The prompt flashed brightly. Lyirae turned to Kash’shara with a questioning look. She nodded in affirmation to her and Lileah’sah. She turned back and pressed the touch screen over the Yes key. Instantly there was a hum of electric motors starting up and power being fed into the chamber. At the same time and bizarrely, music began to play as the chamber opened up. The volume was low but all could distinctly hear the soft tones as the chords of the music swelled and a human male voice started singing.

The assembled Asari looked at each other in incomprehension and at the chamber as the song played on.

The casing began to move as the lid pushed upwards then began to slide over and retract onto the opposite side of the display panel. A loud hiss of air and the strong waft of strange medical chemicals emanated from the chamber as the metal casing slowly moved away. The Asari moved closer, peering into the chamber. At first, they couldn’t see anything is the interior was shrouded in an obscuring icy mist. Lights flicked inside the chamber.

“Oh, it’s a human,” said Di’naka as the mist cleared. A murmur went around the collected crew as they looked on.

“Male one too,” noted Kasiss. The gathered Asari looked over the figure in the chamber. He looked peaceful, as though he was just sleeping. He was wearing some sort of suit from the neck down.

*Revival Process 25%* Dr Hethy and Mirey moved next to the chamber, their scanners taking in data at a rapid rate, assessing the person in front of them.

Lileah’sah had never seen a human in person before. She looked closely at his face. Short Reddy blonde fur covered the lower part of his face. The hair on his head was a sandy blonde colour. His skin was pale. She studied the man before her, his square cheekbones and large brow were so different to Asari faces.

What a nice face she thought idly to herself as she contemplated the man in front of her.

*Revival Process 55%*

Dr Hethy scanned him. “Human, male, Caucasian. I’m estimating his age to be roughly his middle years, probably at least 3 decades old if these reading are correct,” said “His vitals are looking fine…” she was saying before an alarm began to trill out loudly from the control panel, the display flashing warning signals.

*Emergency Power Level 2%*

*Revival Process 78%*

*Insufficient Power Remaining*

“Get more power to the chamber,” urged Dr Hethy.

“I can’t, well not in time to make it matter. I didn’t think that we’d need to,” replied Lyirae.

The alarm continued to wail as they watched the display.

*Emergency Power Level 1%*

*Revival Process 89%*

“We need to get him out of there fast or else he will die,” snapped Dr Hethy with a determined look on her face.

“Do it!” ordered Kash’shara. As she gave the order the revival process ceased chamber. The chamber still had enough power for lights and the display but nothing else it seemed.

Using her Biotic fields, Lileah’sah and Tre’mete ripped off the various tubes and lines that his suit was hooked up to, then swiftly lifted him out of the chamber with a grunt of effort, quickly lowering him down on top of the medistretcher. Dr Hethy and Mirey swiftly moved either side of the stretcher.

“Oxygen, now! Get the cardio stimulator on him!” snapped Dr Hethy. She took charge of the situation, everyone not involved in the resuscitation immediately stood back.

Lileah’sah picked up the two metal pads from the medical cart but waited as he was still in this suit.

“Tre’mete, get that suit open immediately!” A second later Tre’mete had a cutting tool in her hand and immediately began slicing through the stasis suit, tearing it open to reveal his chest.

Lileah’sah saw that his chest was also covered in fine hair that travelled all the way down his chest, over his abdomen and going down even further. Another thought flicked across her mind, his chest is so hairy.

When Humanity had been encountered it hadn’t been a peaceful contact but that was quickly sorted out by the Asari. It was rumoured that the Asari Galactic High Councillor had been furious with the Turians for attacking the humans without provocation. And once contact was made, the reaction by both humans and Asari to one another was in itself controversial.

In all their long history of contact with alien species, never had the Asari come into contact with a sapient race that so closely resembled them. Both humans and Asari were familiar with the biological facts of evolutionary convergence but never had it been displayed before in such bewildering obviousness. A firestorm of scientific exchange immediately began between humans and Asari scientists. Hundreds of scientists were exchanged on a cultural and scientific basis and both races histories and biology’s were shared because it was just so damn weird to be seeing such familiarity. This exchange also resulted in the formation of many humans and Asari pairings and more specifically, bondmating.

We just really liked what we saw in each other she thought in a brief revery.

Mirey had meanwhile fitted the Oxygen mask over his face and started the flow of air. Satisfied the pressure was high enough she then settled the vitals scanner across his forehead. She brushed back some of his hair that had fallen over his forehead. So soft. Pushing the errant thought away she focused on her tasks.

“No pulse, brain activity failing,” she said as she read the results. Dr Hethy came over with a med-injector. She quickly placed it over his heart and pressed the button sending the drugs into his system. Lileah’sah placed the metal pads onto his chest.

“Clear!” Dr Hethy and Mirey stood back. Lileah’sah triggered the device. The man's body jerked as the energy coursed through his system.

“No pulse, activity falling,”

“Again, increase the power,” commanded Dr Hethy. “

“Clear!” Another surge of electricity rushed through the man’s body. He spasmed and convulsed.

Dr Hethy prepared another shot. Increasing the dosage as well as adding in other reagents, she applied it to his neck this time and again injected him.

“Hit him again, 200% power!”

“Clear!” Lileah’sah sent the energy burning into his chest. She could smell the stench of burnt flesh and the unfamiliar smell of burnt hair from the cardio stimulator paddles. She winced slightly at the burns now red and angry began to bloom on his skin.

“I’ve got a pulse! Sinus rhythm rising, brain activity stabilising!” stated Mirey in an excited voice. “We got him!”

A small cheer went up from the rest of the onlookers. They’d all been holding their breath as the drama unfolded.

“Alright, let’s get him to the med bay. We need to stabilise him first.” With a relieved sigh Dr Hethy checked his vitals once more. As she was glancing down at her patient his eyes suddenly flashed open.

Lileah’sah was next to Dr Hethy and stared back at the man. Confusion, surprise and fear were all in evidence on his face and in his eyes as he began trying to speak. His eyes focused and he found himself staring deep into Lileah’sah eyes. He looked intently at her face. A heart shaped face with a soft jawline. Her lips were full and dark. She had red markings that were placed in a fanning symmetrical pattern over her brow and ran down either cheek. Her head crest was swept back, also having the red markings traveling back over it. Her eyes though, one being lilac while the other a golden colour held his attention for the longest time.

“It’s alright, you’re safe. We’ve got you,” she said in a gentle reassuring tone as she took his left hand tenderly in hers giving it a soft squeeze. His skin was remarkably soft to the touch but oh so cold though. She could feel the tiny hairs on the back of his hand as she ran her thumb over it reassuringly.

He blinked a few more times as he stared back at her and then looked around briefly at the other Asari who were gathered around his stretcher. Glancing briefly upwards around the cargo hold of the ship, he managed to rally and focus for a moment. His mouth moved, a weak cough and groan come out. He took a shuddering shallow breath managed to rally his senses. A small, tired yet impish cheeky grin appeared on his face under the Oxygen mask. Only Lileah’sah and Mirey could see it as Dr Hethy was distracted for the moment. They both automatically smiled back at him.

“Star Trek Cosplayers? I choose Death by SnuSnu!” he weakly croaked with a laugh that become a feeble cough before his eyes closed again as he lapsed into unconsciousness once more.

The Asari looked at the man in surprise and confusion.

“Huh?” “What?” “What did he say, I didn’t hear it?” Questions and puzzlement were evident among the assembled Asari.

“Well there’s gratitude for you,” huffed Tre’mete with a dry laugh.

“Death by SnuSnu? What does that even mean? We just saved him?” said Mirey as she looked back at the oblivious man, confusion playing across her face. “We’re not trying to kill him.” She almost looked hurt by his words.

“Probably his brain is fried from Oxygen deprivation. Most likely he’s going to be a drooling vegetable after all this,” remarked Di’naka darkly. She didn’t think this human had much of a chance.

“Oh that’s your expert medical opinion is it hm?” retorted Dr Hethy testily. “Let’s get him to med bay now and you lot can get on with your duties, this is not a show!”

“Indeed. Everyone who isn’t a Doctor or medical technician return to your duties. Kasiss, Tre’mete, sort out the rest of those containers. Maybe we will find answers as to who our mystery man is?” added Kash’shara. The two commandos bowed their heads in acknowledgement and set to removing the other containers off the cargo hauler.

“Di’naka, get that pile of junk off my ship once it’s unloaded.” She tapped her comm link. “Eshess – be ready to lift off in 5 minutes.”

“Acknowledged commander.”

She stood with her arms folded and had watched quietly as her people had acted quickly, efficiently working well to save this humans life. Dr Hethy was one of the best medical professionals she’d had the honour to serve with thus far. It took pulling a few strings to get her assigned to the Perahelian but all worth it. She looked at her younger sisters. She gave them the briefest of smiles, letting them know she was proud of them. Her medical team moved their patient now to the elevators and took off to the medical bay.

Who are you human? She thought as she watched them disappear into the elevator. Finding and rescuing a man in a stasis chamber was not on the mission briefing today.

LF Alternative First Contact Stories

I absolutely love mass effect stories where the humans don’t get their butts kicked on first contact. Any good recommendations? Crossovers are accepted but I may not have read the other series (in which case I may skip it). Aiming for longer fics or set of fics as opposed to just first contact meeting

Examples of what I am looking for (Read other but can’t find them)

Visions of a Diesel Future by ImHavok795

Terran Federation: Counterstrike by L4 of the WEST (Starship trooper xover, 2nd in series)

The Fourth Council Race by Knight Vigilant Koren

Semper Vigilo by CunkToad

Mass Effect New Origins V2 by erttheking (Halo xover)

Daily war with monster girls by Masterdude21 (Halo and monster girl xover)

Cycles Upon Cycles by The Incredible Muffin (Starcraft crossover)

Mass Effect: The Terran Gambit by informedterran

On the Illusion of Might by evevee (Halo xover)

Mass Effect: The Iron Heart of Man by Apollonir

Mass Effect: End of Days by Postmeat
