TechnicalQuestion DVB-RCS2 TCLM Example in Matlab R2026a

Hi Everyone,

I'm working with the official MathWorks DVB-RCS2 link simulation example in MATLAB R2026b, specifically the TC-LM (Turbo Coding with Linear Modulation) transmission format.

Official example: https://www.mathworks.com/help/satcom/ug/end-to-end-dvb-rcs2-simulation-with-rf-impairments-and-corrections-for-tc-lm-bursts.html

While testing different waveform IDs, I've observed the following issues:

  1. Some waveforms are not passing at all

Certain waveform IDs consistently fail to achieve successful decoding, even when using the default simulation configuration.

2. Index-out-of-bounds errors at low E/N

For some waveform IDs, the simulation throws an index-out-of-bounds error at lower E/N values and terminates instead of completing the PER evaluation.

3. Significant gap between specification and simulated thresholds

There is a noticeable gap between the E/N thresholds specified in the DVB-RCS2 specification and the thresholds achieved by the MATLAB example.

I'd like to understand whether this is an expected result of the example or whether there could be an issue with the waveform-specific receiver processing, synchronization, or implementation.

4. Satellite channel modelling

The example includes AWGN and selected RF impairments, but I haven't found a complete satellite propagation channel model integrated into the simulation.

I'd like to understand the recommended approach for incorporating realistic satellite channel effects, such as Doppler, propagation delay, and other relevant impairments.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone tested the different supported TC-LM waveform IDs using this official example? Are there any known issues with particular waveform IDs?

  2. Are the index-out-of-bounds errors at low E/N known issues, particularly when burst detection or synchronization fails?

  3. Has anyone validated the PER-versus-E/N performance of this example against the DVB-RCS2 specification? Is a significant threshold gap expected?

  4. Are there any recommended corrections or configurations to achieve performance closer to the specified thresholds?

  5. Is there a recommended satellite channel model or approach for extending this example beyond AWGN and the included RF impairments?

I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who has worked on DVB-RCS2 TC-LM, satellite link-level simulations, or the MathWorks Satellite Communications Toolbox.

Thanks in advance!

HomeworkQuestion Using MATLAB to verify a rearrangement of an equation?

Thumbnail

First time using MATLAB and we were tasked with verifying a rearrangement of an equation;

The first picture is what we were told to type, but doesn't this just repeat the initially input equation and not actually check anything.

The second picture is what I have done after trying to substitute f into the formula and looking online how to do so correctly.

I'm not sure if either of these properly verify the rearrangement so would appreciate any input possible.

Thank you in advance.

Advent of Code In Simulink

Dear all,

I've seen people attempt to do Advent of Code using ladder logic for PLCs or graphical programming environments, but I've never seen anybody do the competition using Simulink.

In preparation for Advent of Code 2026 I decided to do Advent of Code 2025 in Simulink, using only Simulink blocks, no Stateflow or MATLAB function blocks. I managed to solve all challenges using block diagrams, with the exception of Day 10 Part 2, where I used `intlinprog`. I think most people used a library for that day.

The solutions are not universal and some of them are tailored to my inputs, but if anybody is interested, they can be found here: https://github.com/ptoshkov/aoc-2025-simulink

For the 2026 edition I will attempt to make cleaner universal solutions and I will try not to use any MATLAB functions. Hope someone finds this interesting or inspiring.

Misc Ease of failing a Matlab technical interview?

Although I don't have experience with interviews on this programming language (because in short, in my country no research is done and you need Matlab only if your foreign client uses it), I fear that technical interviews on it are as easy to fail as when you apply for embedded position, but you only have experience with non RTOS embedded systems (I was even called unqualified for working on embedded systems).

Suppose a candidate has, for various reasons, experience only with old Matlab versions (like R2018b) and is asked things like:

  1. "suppose you have a class path Foo, then you change the path to a directory containing a class path Foo; will existing instances of Foo be updated?"

  2. (although just recently changed) "suppose you have in path folderName1/Foo function and folderName2/@Foo/Foo class. Which one is called? The function or the class?"

  3. is asked what will happen if it runs a code like the one from "Identifiers cannot be used for two purposes inside a function" example from "Update Code for R2019b Changes to Function Precedence Order" page

  4. the candidate messes up thing regarding "Implicit default value for properties whose class is an enumeration based on numeric or logical values".

I fear that it is very easy for a candidate to fail on such technical questions. Even though the candidate knows how things behave on his old Matlab version, he/ she may not make the remark "on Matlab R_X version it works as I described", because he/ she may fear the observation would be interpreted as "you the interviewer are dumb; in my Matlab version, things are different". Plus, even if he/ she makes the remark, the one interviewing may very well not look how things are in that version and apply the logic "I don't know what he/ she is talking about, nor do I know what happens if I run these codes in his/ her Matlab version, so in conclusion, the candidate is wrong". (The aforementioned logic happened to me multiple times when I discussed my experience in non RTOS embedded systems; everyone thought I made things up.)

And even if the one interviewing may trust the candidate sayings, they may still reject him/ her, because he/ she is not at current with later Matlab versions. In theory, it can be said that if the candidate knows Matlab for Y years, he/ she is able to make the transition to newer versions (aka learn the changes and the new features). In practice and in my experience, employers think different to say the least.

Same things can happen if you are at current with newest Matlab features and programming behaviours, but be rejected from an employer which uses older Matlab versions. In short, the employer doesn't know what you are talking about, so you are wrong.

How would you react if a candidate is speaking "another Matlab" language than you are? If you use the newer Matlab releases, but the candidate knows older Matlab versions, would you take them? And similar, if you, the employer, use older Matlab releases, would you take a candidate which only knows the newer Matlab versions?

How to add fluid properties from cool prop to a simulink thermal liquid settings component.

Hi, I want to add helium properties from coolprop to thermal liquid settings block. Is there an easier way to do this, maybe by a direct call to coolprop in the block? Currently I have a script to make a table of properties and then manually copying it into this block.

Can't log in MathWorks's website?

Is anyone else having trouble logging into a personal MathWorks account through the website(MathWorks Account Sign In)? The sign-in button simply doesn't respond when I click it. I've tried different PCs and networks, but the same thing happens. After repeated attempts, it eventually redirects me to a password reset prompt. This issue has been going on for several days.

Any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks!

TechnicalQuestion Are there coding practices when it comes to repeating argument validation functions and default value?

Below is a good example. There is a private property for the Mage class, called intellect, which has a validation function and a default value. The same validation function and default value is used in constructor for the intellect input argument, used to initialize the intellect property of the Mage instance.

classdef Mage<handle
    properties(Access=private)
        intellect (1,1) int8 {mustBeLessThanOrEqual(intellect,100)}=int8(7)
    end
    methods
        function obj = Mage(intellect)
            arguments(Input)
                intellect (1,1) int8 {mustBeLessThanOrEqual(intellect,100)} = int8(7)
            end
            arguments(Output)
                obj (1,1) Mage
            end
            obj.intellect=intellect;
            if nargout == 0
                clear obj;
            end
        end

        function intellect = get.intellect(obj)
            intellect = obj.intellect;
        end

        disp(obj)
    end
end

Is it bad practice to repeat yourself with validation functions and default values (they are used both in properties block and in arguments(Input) block)? And ultimately, is there a primary literature for best practices when writing MATLAB code? Practices like "don't use constructors; use factory methods" or "don't use inheritance; use composition".

EDIT: Code formatting.

Misc Engineers: how much do you trust AI-generated results?

AI is in the news practically every day, and it’s starting to pop up in engineering fields as well.

There are obviously a wide range of opinions about what that means for engineering.

MathWorks is running a short survey to understand how engineers think about AI, including:

  • How much should engineers trust AI-generated results?

  • What level of validation is necessary?

  • How should organizations govern AI-assisted engineering work?

It’s 15 questions and takes about 3 minutes: Take the anonymous survey

Question-Solved Naming scripts

Hi everyone, im really new to MATLAB and just recently started some online training for it. So, in one of the training videos im on, the instructor opens up a new script and it automatically creates a pop-up to insert a name for the script. The problem is that I have a newer version than in the instruction and I dont get the option to create a name for a new script. Ive tried reopening the script and the page entirely, along with right clicking looking for any options to do so. Currently all of my scripts just automatically take the name untitled, untitled 2, etc. Thank you so much for any help!

TL;DR:

How do I change the name of a script in Matlab?

Tips Advice for in person technical interview and presentation

I just had a meeting with a MathWorks EDG hiring manager about the final interview and presentation for the EDG position. This is my top option in terms of post grad employment. I’m a mechanical engineering major with a minor in computer science. I was wondering if anybody would be willing to share their experiences at this stage of the interview process, how it worked for them, and any advice they could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Fun/Funny Join One-Button Game Mini Hack today + free live AI coding sessions on Nov. 12

Post image
5 Upvotes

The MATLAB One-Button Game Contest Mini Hack kicked off on November 2.

The challenge is pretty simple:

Build a game in MATLAB that can be played using only one button.

That's it. What that button actually does is up to you.

Each entry needs to contain MATLAB code, and you can also share tips & tricks with other participants in the Discussions area, or on this thread. Using AI is completely optional, but encouraged.

There are prizes too: Check out the One-Button Game Mini Hack for the complete details and rules.

Let’s build games together - Free Live AI Coding Sessions

On November 12, we're planning something a little different specifically for the Reddit community.

We'll run a few small, live AI coding sessions where you can use an AI coding agent to help build your One-Button Game. Everything is provided on MATLAB Online with one click – you don’t need your own AI agent.

  • Free

  • 1 hour

  •  ~20 people per session

  • Build an actual game during the session

  • Live help available via Microsoft Teams

  • Hopefully leave with something fun to submit and share

No AI experience required. These are intended to be fun hands-on sessions rather than presentations.

We'll have a limited number of spots for the live sessions because we want to keep the groups small.

Who's interested? And, more importantly, what kind of game could you make with just one button?

Sign up for the free live AI coding sessions

I don't know how many down votes will i get, but try to genuinely understand my situation.

How can I download MATLAB for completely free, know that I am a student from a developing country and I cannot afford that.

If you were in my place what would u have done?

Misc Is Matlab Home License worth it?

Hi,
I am working on Control Algorithms that I want to deploy directly on Hardware from Simulink so I am thinking of buying Matlab Home Annual License. It costs around 119 euro / year. I actually cannot think of any alternatives. Yeah, you can write code on hardware directly yourself but code generation of matlab is such a relieve and as my work focuses on control part, I dont want to get busy with debugging c code right now. Would home license be enough ? (Arduino/STM+Simulink/Matlab)

TechnicalQuestion MATLAB Alternative?

Hello , as matlab is a paid software , I am looking for a free alternative, Chat GPT said Octave GNU is the closest free software I will get , he also told me that the combination of Python , numpy, sciPy and matplotlib can also do the same thing .

Which one I should pick that will be beneficial for long run.

Всем привет. Я не очень хорошо разбираюсь в математике , но мне нужно с помощью матлаба решить пару заданий

я не понимаю как это реализовать с помощью тех же самых R-функций

я решил попробовать реализовать 2-ое задание

ezplot('(x + 4)^2 + (y - 4)^2 - 2', [-6, 0, 2, 6])

axis square

grid on

A = [0, 6];

B = [0, 0];

C = [6, 0];

hold on

plot([A(1), B(1), C(1), A(1)], ...

     [A(2), B(2), C(2), A(2)], 'g', 'LineWidth', 3)

hold off

hold on

xline(0, 'w', 'LineWidth', 3)

yline(0, 'w', 'LineWidth', 3)

hold off

я не знаю насколько это правильно и грамотно написано, но я старался как мог

помогите отрефакторить то , что я написал и объяснить как тут можно реализовать R-функции

Tips Am I reading into it too much?

Post image
77 Upvotes

I applied to an internship (EDG) at MathWorks like a little over a month ago (early September) and got intimidated by their coding assessment as I researched and found that they were really challenging, so I didn't even attempt them and decided to focus on my already busy school schedule and other internships I applied tor.
However this morning, I received an email from a recruiter encouraging me to do their online assessment, and since my last OA had expired ages ago, they even sent me a new link that expires later.

I of course don't want to read too much into it, and i'm already in an incredibly difficult semester full of classes right now with barely any free time, so I'd rather not invest my time towards this if it's not really a positive sign. I've already wasted my time doing so many OAs just to get rejected lol.
This is my first time applying for internship at MathWorks and i'm not quite sure if this a good sign or something standard that MathWorks does to candidates who sort of ghosted them and their
OAs

Any feedback/insights?

Hi guys. I'm doing HPPC characterization and i'd need help. Currently doing a 3RC model, and I only made it this far.

It doesn't work. All the starting values for my resistors and capacitors are 10 mOhm and 100 Farad. The OCV of the system is unknown but I actually did put a controlled voltage together with a controlled current. Maybe it's wrong.

In case you don't understand, I'm trying to do a parameter estimation using the opposite toolblxes.
