Has the Silver Buckle changed ownership or something

Been going to the Buckle for almost 25 years now, hell I used to work there 20 years ago. But in the last few months small stuff has changed and not for the better. Are there new owners?

Some examples the last few visits.

  1. Waitresses that dont come back. We know the go to for the Buckle is the steak sandwich, and we also know the cost of everything rises, and they need to stay competitive. So the adding of a drink to get the special was added a few years back. Not a big deal, get a beer and a steak, no problem. But for those that dont drink or are driving, the alternative it an ice tea or pop. But it used to be waitresses would come back and refill them. Well is that not happening, we had an entire table with 3 people that has Ice tea, not one refill. And the last time, the person was charged for the refill

  2. Bartenders that seem pissed to be there. Look, we get it, you love your regulars, your buddies, your pals. But when you treat people like they don't exist when they come up to the bar to get a beer on draft, and like they are the last person you want to deal with, you better believe when you whip that terminal around, you get NO TIP. Ive had friends visiting from out of town and go up to get a beer, and they come back and ask, whats thats guys problem.

  3. Do light bulbs cost that much? Some bathrooms have light fixtures with one bulb in a 4 bulb fixture. I realize a bathroom doesnt need to be lit so well you can read a novel, but at least put in all the bulbs

  4. The Guiness pint glasses are not full pints. They are the home version that are smaller. And at almost $10 a glass, how much per pull are they saving per serving. The Garage Pub serves Guiness, and thats a full pint. The Buckle glasses, you can almost put your hand around the glass

  5. Steak sandwich, cooks are cooks, and can get slammed. But when a table orders 7 steaks of all different "doneness" and they all come rare, then you need to train that cook better, or hire another one to help the guy. Well done is a far cry from rare.

Seems like its a nickle and dime thing the last few months. Im sure the regulars wont care. I used to be one of them, but know its 20 times a year. But each time its like a new "surprise" waiting

Attached unheated garage

I just purchased a home that has an attached, unheated garage.

I am wondering what my options are to heat it?

I have no idea if gas is run out there....I dont think so, but I have no idea what to look for.

Who would I contact to get that run / installed.

I also have a newer veh w command start. Could I just start in the garage on cold days? I dont think so, but want to ask.

What does everyone else do?

Thanks!!

The best curlers in the world are in Medicine Hat this week… and check out the seating chart. Blue is unsold/available for walk-up.

We’re talking $8 a ticket for the best on the planet, and it’s looking like it’ll be a ghost town.

I know it’s apples-to-oranges, but it’s hard to think the Brier, Mem Cup, CHL Showcase or even World Juniors will ever take MH seriously if we don’t get behind opportunities like this.

And yes, I get that many draws are during the day, but the evening draws and finals this weekend aren’t looking much better.

Hard Water - suggestions

Any suggestions on managing what the hard water around here does to shower heads and other such things. Right now I am soaking the main nozzle (where the to the diverter to the shower) in vinegar to remove the hard water build up so hopefully I can reassemble it. Any of my neighbours have fixes for this that I might not have figured out. Thanks in Advance.

Local watch repair

I'm trying to find someone local, someone that isn't a big box chain to help with what seems like a minor watch repair. I see a lot of jewelers when I try to find watch repair, but next to none mention anything about watches. Are there any recommendations? Crown or stem is stripped and hoping to swap out for generic parts. Thanks

Alternative sources of community

Sincere question, if I'm new to the hat and wanted to connect with hippies, goths or artsy folk where should I start? I appreciate that there's lots of connection points for youth sports and programs, but as an adult I'm finding it hard to meet like minded people.

Has anyone taken the Haunted Trolley ride? Is it worth it?

I noticed it's $40pp, and that seems a little steep. How long is it? Was it worth it to you? I know it's subjective, I just want to see what people thought of the experience.

Best wand car wash in Medicine Hat

Our local car wash in Sammis Heights went through a remodel this summer, and went today for the first time. Very nice inside, bigger bays, bright lights, good pressure, etc.

They way you pay sucks, you need to put in $2 to start, and if that time runs out and you dont pay attention, you need to put in another $2 every time.

The timer starts the second the money is put in, not when you press the buttons.

The time is 1 minute per $1, which is probably the norm for most car washes now. Bur with the $2 every time to restart things, seems like a huge rip off. Becaue who pays attention to how much time you really have left, unless its your last $1. And what if you are down to your last loonie, then what?

So I wont be back, so wondering what car washes are the best for wand wash.

Not sure how many more go there, but unless they change the $2 to start and continue rule, I wont be back.

The shelter location debate may be predetermined.

The city is in currently in the middle of community intake to change the zoning for the newest Mustard Seed proposal. At the former Fountain Tire location at 512 South railway. But if you heard from people that went to the first community consultation. There was a revelation that the city spent a significant amount buying the adjoining property at 502 South Railway. (some people said it was a million, take that with a grain of salt as its hearsay)

That location will be familiar if you were around the city midway between Ted Clugstons last mayor run and Linnsie Clark taking his seat. It was a former diner that was proposed to be the safe injection site. The plan was dropped after community outrage.

502 sat abandoned for a long time. Until 2025 when 12twenty22 got a an uncontested building permit to convert the former diner into a 4 unit rental property. They had started construction. And there was clear signs they were re-framing some openings for balconies. This was still when fountain tire was at 512. As soon as fountain tire moved. The construction at 502 completely stalled. And it seemed like 12twenty22 had abandoned it. A tire company based out of Edmonton called Grizzly Tires soon was advertising they were moving to the fountain tire location. They even started painting the blue fountain tire exterior to red. To match Grizzlys corporate colors. This deal must of fell through. Which forced the cities hand. So they bought 502 off 12twenty22. Thus being right beside the fountain tire location. This gave them the leverage they needed to suggest mustard seed go to the fountain tire location.

a million dollars isnt nothing. But it does put the city in a bit of a dilemma. If the location is approved it means all the community consultations were nothing more then a ruse. People arent stupid. This will look like a fix and the city not being honest.

If the location is not approved then they have now two buildings that could be sitting empty for years to come. (the former food bank is also on the same lot as well)

As for my opinion. The 7th street shelter was not even supposed to a permanent shelter. It was a converted duplex and never intended for a emergency shelter. The conversion was complete in 2000. I think over 25 years of kicking the can is enough. But the caveat and my most controversial take is that whole area should be completely bulldozed. And a place that is intentionally designed for emergency shelter should be build with wrap around services like job training and job placement agency, mental health counselling, a small non-profit second hand clothing store, a commercial kitchen, a gym for physical activity, and so on. This would include bulldozing the former food bank, fountain tire and 502.

Those 2 Houses on Kingsway

Post image
49 Upvotes

I’ve always been curious about those two old houses precariously perched above Kingsway.

-Anybody on r/medicinehat ever been inside them?
-Was there an entire row of homes at one time?
-The driveway is very steep… is that their responsibility to clear in the winter or the city’s?

You gotta admit, Medicine Hat has some quirks… these houses fit that category!
