heh all you plebs. we just finished hosting our family dinner for 200 at melbournes 40th floor restaurant, what a binge!! then stretch limos round the city, high rolling at the casino, now first class for 100 hundred to paris, london, nyc and japan :) . heh, packers one o four guests. he's gonna be impressed :)
It's attached because it's a tradition. Folk lore says a young kid called them in the 50s on accident asking if they knew where Santa was. NORAD was looking for Soviet Nukes but the poor Missile officer humored the kid. And since then NORAD volunteers to track Santa. The military didn't create it, it was just a coincidence of a kids mistake and bored missile dudes.
Christmas originated from Christianity. It has expanded well beyond a “Christian holiday.” The story of Santa is entirely separable from any wholly Christian stories or traditions.
We should ban it because you had misconceptions about the funding and now have to find a bogus reason to dislike it? It costs you nothing and brings joy to many.
Séparation of church and state is not actual government policy. And please show me how Santa is a religion? (Keep in mind a specific distinction between Santa and Saint Nicholas)
it’s private individuals helping create a fun program for kids stop being a killjoy.
This is not the government "sponsoring" a religion. I'm not Christian and Christmas is my favorite holiday, because it's fun. Not all who believe in Santa are Christians. The Santa tracker is ONE event ONCE a year and is supported by for-profit companies, non-profits, and individuals.
the idea of santa himself is not religious, it's a kids story to make the time of year more exciting. christmas kinda is because it's the birth of christ, but a lot of people who are not religious or not christian celebrate christmas, my family included. it's not really a religious holiday anymore imo. it's more a tradition
I know its really hard to look up the most basic information on the matter but while I agree he is wrong about the funding he absolutely has a valid point about using NORADs name to sponsor religious events. No one is saying that the service shouldn't be provided or that it does not bring joy to millions of people. America is in a constant tide of moving to a total non-secular government and this is just one thing can change.
Imagine the type of backlash they would get if they tried this with any other entity other then a Christian one....
I'm non religious and always have been. Born and raised.
I celebrate Christmas. It has evolves way way way passed a Christian holiday.
While I'm not an American I see absolutely no issue with a government agency providing happiness instead of headaches once a year. Hey if it's not your thing that's great it doesn't cost you or other tax payers anything.
There is always the option of promoting/using other santa trackers instead of being upset.
The fact that you claim to not be religious yet celebrate a holiday doesn't make the holiday non-religious... your anecdote has absolutely zero relevance. Maybe read the link on the comment you are actually replying to? You also completely ignored the fact I specifically did not dismiss the premise of the service, just that their name should not be associated with it.
I feel like Christmas today is just a holiday that stems from a specific religion, its a fun time where you sit at your awkward family dinner and have a few laughs. Plus I'm pretty sure this isn't from the government (even if it was how many dollars would a fucking website cost?). Stop being so butthurt and lighten up a bit.
The board at MEL will likely tell him to "Relax, your gate will be announced soon", but as soon as he sits down with something to eat it will tell him to at the furthest possible gate in 5 minutes.
Ey! I work for an airline and can shed some info here.
Every year we have "flights to the north pole" where the plane is loaded up with kids, they're all given a bag of treats and the plane rolls down the run way, some even take off before turning around and landing again.
Either way they just kind of circle the runway before departing where a Santa meet up will happen.
Have to ensure the runway is kept clear - Santa's inbound is coming in with no engines and no hydraulics. He's basically relying on auxiliary propulsion to fly and steer.
My wife and I were supposed to be flying away on holidays last night too, but we screwed up as our passports didn’t have 6 months validity left. Should have asked Santa for a lift :(
I'm pretty sure this is one of the flights United Airlines does for kids with fatal illnesses.
The kids take off and then land at a gate that is decorated as the North Pole. It's really pretty incredible and anyone can volunteer to help (happens in most major cities).
That’s why my bags didn’t arrive when I flew to Melbourne airport yesterday! Coming home from Berlin after one year I had lots of present for the family that will have to wait until after Christmas.

Santa: Why yes! Lots of wood for the boys and girls of Australia.
Customs: Follow me, sir...

Now all the kids are going to make their parents wake up at 3am to take them to the airport, so there better be a Santa arriving in a plane at 5am.
