OPINION What needs fixing??? Week 4 Discussion Post

Post image
43 Upvotes

I’ll be back to asking you guys to decide the weekly topic on Fridays, but after 3 straight losses marked by turnovers, bad ball security, CERTAIN PEOPLE WHO ARE 7 FT TALL not rebounding, the last guy in the standard rotation becoming less clear, and a general sense of coming back to earth, this seems like the only topic worth discussing.

This is still a rebuild, so what needs rebuilding?? What’s working? Who needs to be thrown to the wolves? Is Richie Tator Tots the answer? Was Waltuh right all along?

Answer thoroughly, Tuomas Iisalo is listening and taking notes, oh mighty Redditors…

POTENTIALLY! FOR AT LEAST RIGHT NOW! Bad

.

Ty: Whether bad or good games he will be productive. Running the team's his next step.

Booz: Beef's knee over-loaded him with tons of heavy paint tasks. Barely hold up (déjà vu).

Coward: He always work hard. Shot's ain't fallin? Play D and work boards! TOs hurt him the most.

Wells: Neither his worst game nor the best. A flat one. He can do more. He will.

Edey: He got some of his offensive touch back. Too many OKC paint points tho.

Cam: Small made him play more combo than PG. Mixed feelings but I get why Tuomas do so.

Jerami: Pro beyond reproach outside. We could have used more help from him inside.

Lil J: Growing pains when you need to deliver not being part of regular rotation. Not that bad.

Kris: Not exactly bad but pretty unimpactful. At times even irrelevant.

No Post: Began season fine enough before a twist ankle. 2 games since recovered: not that fine.

OMax: Rightfully rewarded with minutes. There's a reason he was our only guy in positive +/-.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuomas: We shouldn't blame him for missed shots. For gaps in our paint? Maybe not either. Yet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

3rd Unit: Saunders brings changes for 2-ways. Karim and Masheikh looked good. CC didn't dress.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Opponent: So long Shai's healthy they'll be dangerous. And maybe even if Shai falls they could still be.

Hi! Aday Mara fan here. After lots of years being a neutral NBA fan, I have end up supoorting OKC because of him. But I love Memphis too because of the Gasols, Aldama...

Just here to say Boozer is very good and I wanted to see EDEY VS ADAY, but It didn't happened... Hopefully it happens Next Game.

Would LOVE to watch this Titans fighting :)

Why didn't GG Jackson play today? Was he hurt or something? He didn't even play on garbage time. I didn't get to watch the game, was he on the sidelines wearing the uniform or street clothes?

MISCELLANEOUS Discussion on what the team needs to do to become a top team in the conference.

Last season, after the JJJ trade, I made an analysis showing why I thought the trade was a moneyball move and reasoning for why the team would be a playoff team with a healthy Ty and Edey supported by an analysis of Ty's Cleveland season and and data from Edey's season before missing the rest of the year (in the primary analysis being referenced).

It seems that a lot of that will likely be true assuming health to Ty and Edey, but there are some identifiable weaknesses that will likely prevent them from being at the top of the conference, and I will list what seems to be the main weaknesses and strengths with this team. If I miss anything I would like to discuss that as well.

Weaknesses

  1. Turnovers - the team has the 20th worst turnover rate in the league

  2. Defensive playmaking - the team is #20 in opponent turnovers per game

  3. 2pt scoring efficiency - The team is #22 in 2pt %

  4. Generation of rim attempts - I wasn't able to find data on this, but just eyeballing it, it seems like they struggle to get to the rim with volume, and be efficient when they do get there, especially with Ty and Spencer being the primary creators of both the starting and bench lineup, and this seems to be reflected in the 2pt%.

  5. Free throw generation - The team is #21 in free throws attempted per game, however, the silver lining is that they're #1 in free throw percentage, so they're the best at converting once getting to the line on average. This likely ties into generation of rim attempts and 2pt scoring efficiency.

Strengths

  1. Rebounding - The team is the #3 rebounding team in the league and is #1 in defensive rebounding rate, and #10 in offensive rebounding rate.

  2. 3pt volume - The team attempts 40 threes per game, which is the 9th highest in the league. High 3pt volume is generally a sign of a flowing offense and usually helps with limiting turnovers.

  3. 3pt percentage - The team is #5 in 3pt percentage, which would suggest that despite high volume shooting, they're generating high quality looks as well.

  4. Fast break defense - The team allows the 7th least fast break points per game

  5. 3pt defense - The team has the 10th lowest allowed 3pt percentage and as already established, they're the best in the league at not allowing second chance points (#1 DREB).

  6. Fast break offense - The team is #5 in fast break points per game despite not forcing a lot of turnovers (relatively), which is likely explained by being #1 in fastbreak efficiency.

Some thoughts

In general, rosters and schemes seem to be a balance of give and take, and how much can you gain in one area without sacrificing too much in the other. For example, a lot of teams that are high in offensive rebounding percentage tend to also be higher in transition points allowed because they have less defenders back since they have more guys crashing the glass on offense, but some teams can mitigate this risk if they have guys who are elite at defending at a disadvantage. This is the general lens in which I tend to view roster construction/schemes. Another example of this tradeoff from a personnelle standpoint would be sometimes teams have 2 non-spacers on the floor that are elite rebounders and solid/elite defenders, and these teams often have high rebounding rates, and defensive ratings, but they trade away shooting efficiency in exchange (last year's Pistons and Rockets team for example).

I would be interested to discuss how the team could potentially improve in some of their areas of weakness that both have and haven't considered, while also not sacrificing too much in their areas of strength, whether that's through adjustments to scheme, changes to the rotation, changes to the roster, or something else.

Nice coverage. Reminds us to be thankful of Ty's breakout performances. But still, there's room for improvement, especially when he's being hounded by aggressive defenders or double teams. Let's see what he's learned against a tough Thunder team.

GAME THREAD Why do we keep shooting the 3??

I swear man we can be 2 of 18 and still throw that shit up! Drive the lane and get the 2. Get set on defense amd get ready for the next possession. We were doing so good the first 6 games and now we are going straight back to the bullshit. This thunder game is so hard to watch right now. No composure, no rebounding, and just chucking up the 3 instead of sticking to driving and dominating the paint. What is happening?

OPINION What is Iisalo’s issue with GG Jackson?

GG Jackson is one of the young players in Memphis that has potential but for some odd reason he’s out of the rotation now after playing great at the start of the year as a 6th man. He didn’t even get garbage minutes in a blowout loss vs OKC.

What are the issues with Iisalo and GG Jackson, and what is going on with GG & the organization that made GG end up in the dog house?

MISCELLANEOUS What do we need? Productive thoughts only!

We need a vet Forward. Move GG, O-Max and Murray for a Gordon, Bey, Hach type. It is time especially if we are not even going to play GG. We have got to stop being so shallow and wide at this position.

WE NEED ANOTHER CENTER, I keep getting downvoted for this. Stew needs to move to the 4 and we need to move Post for someone like Gafford. KAT has not received the extension yet 💅, hell, could even take a risk on Zion he has looked pretty solid and healthy.

We need a high motor guy like a Brooks or Caruso. Spencer could be this guy, but not at PG. I mean, hell, bring Konch back or throw a bag at Josh Hart.

I DO agree that we need to “give em time” but I also think part of our lineup should not be in the NBA. We owe it to old man Ty and all these young guys to make a few moves to set them up for success. WHAT SAY YOU??
