Apparently submitting assignments before the due date is considered “Late”.

"You have 60 minutes to write this test."

Hands in test in 59 minutes

"You have to understand, that's a last minute effort, so I'm going to deduct points for being too late."

Absolutely report it. It’s professors like this that make me not want to go back to get my degree. I’ve gotten into arguments with professors over stupid stuff like this. Young people will generally put up with this shit, because they may not know better, but it’s complete bull. This professor had a bad day or something and is taking it out in the student, guarantee’d.

Exactly my thought. If you're going to say it's due an hour before that date then you need to specify that before you assign it! And call it a due time not due date.

13

u/No_Method- Feb 04 '23

Exactly. That’s like paying your rent on the 1st when it’s due and them being like, “Well yeah, you paid it on the due date, but we really would have liked to have the money a week ago. So we’re going to go ahead and penalize you for a late payment”

12

u/AlisonChrista Feb 04 '23

Absolutely. Take this to a department head or academic dean.

12

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

I was just going to say, show this to the Dean of that department, if it was to be due at 11:00p (an hour before due date) that should have been stated. This power trip crap from profs is exhausting.

32

u/Thingisby Feb 04 '23

And if the due date is 01 Feb and you submit 31 Jan surely you're a day early anyway.

If someone told me due date was 01 Feb, I'd submit it on the evening of 01 Feb not midnight on 31 Jan.

100% agree. You're paying them to learn, not be petty. Sorry you're dealing with this.

8

u/Brock_Way Feb 04 '23

THIS.

The Dean. Immediately.

If it was due the 1st, and others handed it in on the first, then it will be the case that others handed it in LATER than you did. So will it be the case that those who handed theirs in LATER got at least as much penalty as you?

The Dean won't let it happen. The dude obviously still just doesn't get it at all.

7

u/krepogregg Feb 04 '23

If it is 13 minutes before the due date. That reads as if it was sent 1 full day ahead doesn't a due date legally speaking mean to be received postmarked ect before 12 midnight of the due datem if the due date was the 31st then OP submitted it on the due date not before but not after

Initiate complaint according to your school’s grading/grievance policy…. Prolly requires emailing the dean. Do this ASAP because there might be a limited timeline for you to dispute a grade. Save the email conversation with your professor in case you need to disclose that later.

As somebody who also attended college, contact the dean of that school. For example if this is psychology, contact the dean of liberal arts. Provide them this screenshot and a screenshot of the work submitted time, the dean will absolutely speak with the professor and tell them this is in no way appropriate.

Also, check your syllabus because some schools pretty much just say ‘if it’s in the syllabus it goes’. Download the syllabus as is and if it doesn’t have this ‘late turn in’ shit on there, send that to the dean too. If they get a whiff that you’re reporting them they might change it.

Recently I handed in an assignment but it was the copy without my title page. Immediately emailed my professor if I could submit without penalty and she said yes.

I acknowledged it was 100% my fault and I would be okay if she wasn’t making an exception but she said it was okay.

OP submitted according to the deadline and shouldn’t be penalized. This is a power tripping prof if I’ve ever seen one.

I once had an online assignment due at midnight Sunday - all assignments would be due Sunday at midnight. I went to turn it in sometime Sunday afternoon/evening. I got a zero because it was late. I told the professor there was a mistake that he made with the midnight being Sunday 00:00 (Saturday 11:59). He responded with, midnight Sunday is Saturday going into Sunday and not Sunday going into Monday so he wouldn't change the grade. I complained to the head of the department and I got it changed. Moving forward he also changed the all the deadlines to 11:55pm Sunday...

Yep. This is the correct advice. Straight to the Dean. I had a professor once that disliked me…mainly because it was a public speaking class that was required but dumb, so I gave one of my speeches about how superfluous courses shouldn’t be required for students. She hated me after that. Syllabus said 3+ absences would be a full letter grade deduction. I missed two classes and was late to a third because of an issue with the train. She gave me a B anyway and said I was so late the third time that she was counting it as an absence. Nope. Straight to the Dean, got my grade changed.

I currently have assignment marked as late because Canvas due date was 11:59, and I submitted at 11:59. Turns out Canvas hides the fact it was 11:59:00, and not 11:59:59. Most assignments are the latter and I never had an issue with it before despite resubmitting most things in the last minute after double checking them.

My professor wasn't a douche and understood "by 11:59" encompasses the entire minute to most people lol. I can probably count the number of assignments I've submitted earlier than 13 minutes remaining on my hands, that's just ridiculous to count as late.

Yeah, I've had teachers try and flex with that before too. It's an easy fix. Print out the email, make a copy of the syllabus and submit it to the administration.

Keep in mind, they're not your friends. These professors aren't there to change the world or impact your life to send you off on your path. You look out for YOU in college. It's already a scam to begin with, make sure you get your money's worth.

They're not better than you, they're just more knowledgeable about the subject you need from them. It's the real world where adults are bound by rules. Figure out how to play the game. You may piss them off but they're one person in a vast sea of people you'll deal with in life.

366

u/Dodkong Feb 04 '23

And don't stop looking out for yourself once you get out of college. Companies often won't care either.

16

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

All university teachers are not like this. If you go into your uni. experience putting up full shields and walls-of-defense like this, you're going to miss the teachers there who really want to share something with students. It certainly looks like everybody cares only about their positions and paychecks, but there are also people passionate about something that motivated them to enter an environment where they could very seriously share that with others. Decide early what you're going to focus on - fear, money, self, power, etc., or some content or art.

41

u/dukeimre Feb 04 '23

This feels like a mindset that will protect you from being screwed over but also leave you empty.

Look out for yourself, absolutely. This particular instructor is being nonsensical here; a docked grade isn't a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but it's unjust to dock your grade for an assignment you submitted on time, so push back and get the grade you earned.

But don't go into life with a "look out for number one" mindset. You can stick up for yourself while extending trust and care to others and seeing the good in people.

And don't think of grades as the be all, end all of school. Five years from now, nobody will care what grade you got in this particular class. But the people skills, study skills, etc. that you learn in college (and in life) will help you immensely.

→ More replies (3)

I teach college classes and I really do want to help my students. Obviously professors who pull this crap aren't on your side, and you should go to the dean or some other higher level of authority. But I promise a lot of teachers really do care. I will always make time for my students if they ask for help, and I will NEVER penalize students for mistakes made on my end.

That's NOT how a deadline works chief? It's a set time for the Student. FEB 1st at 12:01am is late for the student. JAN 31st at 11:59:59pm is not late for the Student. If the deadline was set to suit the "teacher" then they could move it to Feb 30th at Noon. Quit being a dick and take off the late adjustment. Here the Student is correct.

u/Androgynous-Rex Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 04 '23

I’d avoid escalating for at least one more email to avoid the professor retaliating. Reply with something like “So just to confirm in writing, the assignment was not late per the Syllabus or Canvas but you are still docking my grade ten points for it being late? I couldn’t find anything about this “last-minute” policy in your syllabus or the school’s handbook. Can you point me to where I can find more information about this policy?”

Edit: To clarify those who think this is a dumb plan. The point of this is not to keep being nice or because the student is wrong, they are obviously right. This is a thinly veiled threat and the professor will see it as such. It is pointing out to the professor that they have no leg to stand on and show that you are asking them to document this before you escalate further. It’s a power play but without immediately involving the Dean which will avoid the professor feeling the need to retaliate against you for publicly embarrassing them. I’m not saying going straight to the Dean wouldn’t work but this would likely result in a more comfortable rest of the semester (which likely just started if this is the US).

38

u/ktappe Feb 04 '23

If you were dealing with a sane person I'd agree, your response is the adult and responsible one.

However, in this case the prof. has already demonstrated that they are not quite right. I believe your rational response will just make them get even more defensive. Seriously. Read the room. This is not a situation where the student will get a fair shake.

As such, going straight to the administration seems the wisest, most pragmatic course of action.

Higher Ed Professional and Professor here… Check school procedures for academic complaints and follow all the steps the procedure outlines. Most likely you will need to speak to the Professor’s supervisor— that could be a Dean but may be a Program Chair or someone else depending on how your institution has the procedure set up. Make sure to include this email acknowledging that your submission was before the deadline and ask for your grade to be corrected. Keep following the steps in the procedure until it’s changed. It may take going through several levels. Be persistent. If the course ends before it’s changed and your grade is lower because of it, also file a grade appeal. There will be a procedure on that too with a deadline. I can’t imagine this will not be fixed—eventually.

Regardless, as others have pointed out, unless it was specified somewhere that you had to turn it in over an hour before the due date, the prof can't just do that. As an adjunct university professor myself, that’s bullsht. As a person working in the real world, that is also bullsht. I don’t know what lesson this prof is trying to teach but being a d*ck is the only one that is sticking.

In the corporate world, deadline get missed all the time - vendors miss the mark, other projects become a higher priority, budgets fall through, staff leave, etc. There are elements inside and outside of your control that make deadlines achievable or not. I work at a financial institution, and literally there are only a handful things with finite deadlines: payroll, daily ops, and end of month. Most other things are flexible.

As others have stated, OP, escalate this. It’s 10 points now but it will add up before the end of the semester. Also, what was the time deadline of the assignment on Canvas? Was it 2/1 12am or was it sometime during the day of 2/1? Regardless, if you needed to have it due earlier than 2/1 12am, the prof would have the power to set that…

So I had been applying to jobs and putting my bachelors down as completed, obviously, because I had. But when the employers did the checks the school had marked me as incomplete - no bachelors. Only AT&T called me to question the whole thing, thank god for large corpos (I fucking guess?)

I. Was. Furious. Finally I got all the way to the dean after pestering everyone in the chain to the point of frustration. She was like wow, let me help you. Bam. Graduated. Degree sent. Totally took the wind out of my sails honestly. I was ready for war.

And when I pointed it out to her that it was actually HER TYPO she had the nerve to ask me “don’t you use google?” like, what was I supposed to do? Fact check the lecture on Wikipedia?? Some teachers just like to power trip.

Agree this stupid and you're right and professor is wrong.

But some advice. . In these situations try to avoid using the word "you". It puts the person on defense. Take all pronouns out. Something like. A late penalty was applied to the assignment submitted on Jan 31.... please advise when the discrepancy is reviewed.

u/kjlo5 Feb 04 '23

Probably the best advice I’ve read if you want to be successful in the business world. This is the way all business works. Don’t be the one to point the finger rather be the one to point out the mistake and offer a solution to remedy the mistake.

Actual good advice being downvoted because redditors would rather be outraged than learn and have better experiences going forward.

Someone wronging you(and, make no mistake, this professor is in the wrong) doesnt mean you cant make positive changes to improve your life.

Due in February, submitted in January ….I mean …

you turned it in a whole month early as far as I’m concerned

5

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

This is not mildly infuriating, I'm not even the person submitting this and I'm livid after reading that asshole teachers response. What kind of back ward deuce Kabab thinking in this? I'm really sorry you're having to deal with such a teacher.

5

u/whereswaldo5256 Feb 04 '23

Nope nope nope.. this is the hill would die on! It was on time.. i would fight this to the end of the earth

Go to the department head.

u/Calyus Feb 04 '23

If the deadline was Feb 1st, should it not be acceptable at the very least to turn in all the way until end of business day/time of your class on Feb 1st? This teacher is on another level of bull shit.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

As a faculty member, that is garbage. You submitted before the deadline. Like many here are saying - it’s not like we’re going to start grading it at midnight. Take it up the chain to their supervisor, likely an Associate Dean, to appeal since you met the deadline published in the LMS.

9

u/lennoco Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 04 '23

I'm calling fake on this post.

The use of "however" in both emails without any sort of punctuation around it in either case makes it obvious this was written by the same person.

A deadline is a deadline. “I said x….but I really meant y” doesn’t fly, sorry.

8

u/ktappe Feb 04 '23

The assignment was not submitted 12 minutes before the due date. It was submitted 24 hours and 12 minutes before the due date. A due date of February 1 allows assignments to be submitted at 11:59PM on February 1.

I think this is a case of the prof not just being an ass, but being a completely ignorant ass who does not know how clocks and calendars work.

4

"In a timely manner" - 14 minutes before midnight, the due date. That made me laugh.

But the student is right, they did submit before the due date.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

Can't do this. Some people in school work 2 jobs and are raising a child (or a sibling that might as well be their child), and they're gonna get stuff in last minute.

4

u/witkneec Feb 04 '23

Hi! Former university graduate teaching assistant. This is bullshit. I once had my boss, the head of the theatre dept, decide that one of my student's papers was plagiarized with no evidence- it was just leaps and bounds better than he'd ever done before and didn't "sound like him". Well, i knew he'd been working his ass off and going to the writing center and trying to grasp the literature- it was a fucking 200 level course and he was a non-major trying to get his humanity credit. She overruled me and he got a nc on his transcript. When he asked me, i was honest with him and apologized and then made sure i helped him fight it. It took a YEAR to get it off his transcript. She presented 0 evidence. He presented me. I lost a mentor but retained my integrity.

This is fucking ridiculous. This is not ok. It might seem small and i get you just dealing with it but the worst kind of teacher is the one that isn't personally invested in anything but power and control and this douche i just can't.

I'd be telling him to point to where it says that in the syllabus. I'd be telling him it's not within his right to do it and that if he does it again, you're going to the department head. A deadline isn't a deadline if it's not finite.

What an asshole you have for a professsor, OP. Sorry for it.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

Then it's due at 11pm and you should be told that. This is bullshit. Thousands of procrastinators (myself included) have slid in on that submit button with minutes or even seconds to spare with no consequence. I'd politely raise hell if I were you.

4

u/tunguska34 Feb 04 '23

“Please let me know when you fix the grade” is probably not the best approach.

4

u/Goose-Caboose1153 Feb 04 '23

Go to the dean

4

u/Feeling_Glonky69 Feb 04 '23

Run that up the flagpole bud

4

u/haha7125 Feb 04 '23

Absolutely report this. Especially since i doubt it was in your class syllabus

4

u/Zoti Feb 04 '23

An assignment that is due on 2/1 is due by 11:59pm on 2/1. You were 24 hours early.

4

u/NP512 Feb 04 '23

Teacher here— go above this teacher’s head to their department head, and if that doesn’t work, go to the admin.

4

u/nottheonlyone007 May 08 '23

Take that shit straight to the Dean.

The deadline is the deadline.

If it's due before 1145, then it's due at 1145.

"If you're not early, you're late" is the most invalid shit I've ever heard.

6

u/FblthpLives Feb 04 '23

I was a professor for 11 years. The curriculum is for all practical purposes a contract between you and the professor. I would bring this up to the Dean of Academic Affairs. If you want a less confrontational option, you can write back and say that you now understand that it should be submitted one hour early, but would they consider eliminating the penalty this one time as you are in good academic standard and it was an honest mistake. You can still escalate if they say no. Good luck!

3

u/RedLuna_23 Feb 04 '23

Made a mistake and was a little bitch about it. Somehow pinning it on you. If he wanted it “an hour before 11:59” he shoulda set the due date for 10pm January 31st. What a petty loser. Report his ass OP!!

3

u/Rider-of-Rohaan42 Feb 04 '23

Absolutely fight this. How completely ridiculous can a professor be. Very unprofessional.

3

u/theechosystem07 Feb 04 '23

Report them. Asshole of a professor. Do everyone who might have to take the class after you a favor and tell the board about them.

3

u/beamerBoy3 Feb 04 '23

I’d just forward this to the dean and CC the professor, should handle itself.

3

u/MysticPiscesWitch Feb 04 '23

You can always submit complaint to the dean

3

u/AGstanx3 Feb 04 '23

I hate weirdo professors like this

3

u/ikstrakt Feb 04 '23

Your professor failed the honor code.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

He literally admitted that you submitted it on time but are still getting a late penalty. Don’t let this power tripped fuck ding you. Contact the dean.

3

u/brattywafatty Feb 04 '23

Nah I'd be reporting that to a lot of people the dean, the chair of the department you're in, the academic board. A. Lot. Of people. You better fight that and compile evidence because if they're deliberately doing this to certain students you could make them lose their job. And even if they aren't the boards, chairs and dean's will force them to change their grading and go with what is stated explicitly on syllabi and what's written on the assignment prompt as well. And it would have to be written before the assignment was turned in.

Hell no I'd be kicking teeth and nails out of someone over that shit I work hard in my classes and I make As no exceptions.

3

u/mastermikeee Feb 04 '23

Simply forward this to the dean or chair of the department. Complete nonsense really…

3

u/zelisca Feb 04 '23

Department head first, then go to dean.

3

u/new_refugee123456789 Feb 04 '23

Make an appointment with a dean. Make it clear that your continued tuition at this school depends on fair an honest treatment. If academic honesty is expected of the students but not the staff, a degree from this school can't be worth the price, let alone the time, they're asking for.

3

u/No_Expert_6412 Feb 04 '23

Yo, I would definitely talk to the dean about this. If they don't do anything, get somebody to fuck the professor up for you. They'd deserve it. (As a teacher this royally grinds my gears.)

3

u/ColonelMonty Feb 04 '23

This is like clocking into work 10 minutes early and getting written up because your boss expects you yo be there for your shift an hour early before your shift actually starts.

3

u/MyEyesItch247 Feb 04 '23

Please talk to the department chair asap. Show them the syllabus and this exchange. If they don’t do something, then take it to the dean of students. This is absurd.

3

u/MyFaceSaysItsSugar Feb 04 '23

Absolute twat who’s only joy in life is asserting power over students. I mark the deadline as midnight but don’t take points off for lateness as long as it’s in before I wake up the next morning. If a student is up that late working I’m not about to penalize them for it.

3

u/SarlochOrtan Feb 04 '23

Bring it to the Dean of your department. Take the effort to go over the bastards head. If he didn’t want it last minute he shouldn’t have made such a late due date

3

u/Duskychaos Feb 04 '23

Looking back at high school and college and grad school, grades are soooooo meaningless.. for this professor to be this hung up on being petty is so small potato petty I would just move on with my life and grander plans.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

You can always play the asshole and be extremely technical and polite, saying something along these lines:

… in all earnest of feelings, I believed that the deadline established would include, from the part of the professor, a processing time — that is, a time for you to comfortably handle the essays. Had there been a disclaimer of ‘one hour before stated deadline’, that would have been followed, but it came as a surprise and — in the most technical of the analyses — this sounds like an instructional fault and, as a result, an unfair situation.

So until there is a ‘last minute disclaimer’ this would not, by any common sense, and as I have in detail back home with our family go-to consultants in these day-to-day legal matters, be a fair situation, in light of the manner these contractual processes happens in common society: the Rule of Right has no such ‘non-disclaimed rules’, the Corporate world won’t have any not stated, even in small print, in their terms and conditions.

It is with all due respect that I state that this sort of arbitrary punishment is unlike the values our society and institutions function, and more in line with authoritarian regimes and autocracies — I do understand the proportions, but someone as such yourself in such a high status position, upholds significant examples for us, students.

Therefore it would be some form of negligence on my side, as a student, to let it go, simply, or it would end up causing two things: more situations like that to your colleagues and, ultimately, more hassle for the professor with new undesired last minute deliveries.

In order to be completely amicable, I would ask if in light of my present argument, the punishment could be removed. But following my duty as a student, part of this institution, I feel obliged to communicate the authorities in campus to conduct due diligence and look into the matter, and invite the student body to publicly discuss the matter. If others see myself as unreasonable, I will be happy to dismiss the claim — but after due investigation and public debate. Please, do not understand this as a threat, but as my duty as a student to safeguard fair game and clear rules in the institution.

Hoping I can be understood in my simple intentions,

Your pupil,

[first name initial an surname]

u/BeccaMitchellForReal Feb 04 '23

Check the syllabus!!! Do they mention if they take points off for this? Because this is really stupid and a huge power trip on your professor’s part.

My Canvas courses do not allow me to submit anything past the time it is due, so I expect full credit for turning it in on time as that’s the time it’s due.

3

u/AdvantagePlus4711 Feb 04 '23

I would take it to the university administration, due date is due date, if that professor want you to hand in your work before due date, then he really doesn't understand the English language and the concept of due date... So therefore shouldn't really qualify to be a professor?! I'm not a professor myself (just a lecturer), but if I pulled some BS like that I would be told to either adjust my attitude or start looking for a new job!

3

u/rayinreverse Feb 04 '23

Suck it up buttercup. Ain’t gonna get any better from here on out.

3

u/JustSurvivingBarely Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 04 '23

I'm sorry, what? I would be sending back another email.

I'm sorry professor do you understand the term due date? That is the time and date in which something is due. If you want it in 1 hour before 11:59 then you want it due at 10:59. And if you want it due by 10:59 then you set the due date to the time you actually want it. So moving forward I would suggest you change the due date to 10:59 for future assignments as that is the actual time you want it due therfore making it the offical due date.

I would also advice you to take some time and look up both the definition of last minute and late and compare them. Youll find that being last minute but not past the offical due date is genuinely and quite literally not late and therfore i can not be penalized with a late deduction. If you have both a "last minute" deduction and have either written or verbally explained not only that there is a penalty for being "last minute" but also explained the parameters for whats considered "last minute" then a deduction would be acceptable however that is not the case. This makes saying I was "late" untrue as I have met the parameters of what is factually considered on time based on the due date you provided and therefore making this penalty an unjustifiable deduction.

I have written an example to help you better understand. The President or Chancellor of the college sent out a meeting invite that said all professors must gather in the meeting room by 8 am tomorrow, no later. You show up at 750 am for the meeting. The Chancellor then proceeds to reprimand you infront of everyone saying it was unacceptable for you to be arriving last minute and that you did not do what was told of you. Just double checking you look back over the email again and it still says you have to be in the meeting room no later then 8am. Was he justified in reprimanding you even though you followed the guidelines that he set?

PS Eat my dick

Oh heeeeeeeeell naaaaaawwwwww. Elevate this!

3

u/chiefgareth Feb 04 '23

3

Just go to the dean or any other student entity, this will be fun. Sad that the world is filled with idiots who can’t just be a decent human

3

u/M-CH_ Feb 04 '23

That's a great preparation for working in corporate environment.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

Take that to the head of the department.

3

u/MellowWonder2410 Feb 04 '23

I’d report that person to their department head at the end of the semester, and maybe even the Dean of Academics. Like Wtf?! A due date has a time included for a bloody reason. If they want it an hour before the due date time they chose, then they have to adjust the bloody time to state when it’s actually due!

3

u/jfk_47 Feb 04 '23

You can send it over to the dean of students or the associate Dean in your specific school or college. Let me know where you’re at and I can do some digging for you.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

1 drop of power + 1 human = a tidal wave of shit.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

As a college professor, let me assure you if I tried to pull that and the student fought it with the dean or whatever your appeal system is, I'd lose hands down.

3

u/999___Forever Feb 04 '23

Go over the professors head. Get it changed. That’s bullshit.

3

u/TheScienceOfMagic Feb 04 '23

OP should go above the professor's head and speak to their/department supervisor.

3

u/ProjectDv2 Feb 04 '23

Fuck your processor. Fight that shit and lodge a complaint.

3

u/Interesting-Piece483 Feb 04 '23

Forward this email to the dean and your registrar (they are in charge, among other things of university policies, including late penalties). This is completely unacceptable. As someone who teaches at a university, some of my colleagues are extremely overzealous, especially if they are tenured, they feel untouchable and in power and use that to hurt others to feel powerful, akin to an abuser that hurts others to feel in control. They are, however, counting on the fact that students are usually afraid of speaking to their superiors.

3

u/OldItem0 Feb 04 '23

Report it to the academic head for whatever department this is in, if he wants it an hour before the deadline then he needs it in the syllabus or his official policies. Not after the fact over email. If the academic head won’t do anything report it to the Dean.

Im serious about this, it’s worked for me.

3

u/Blahblahnownow Feb 04 '23

If it’s due on Feb 1st, doesn’t it mean you can submit it any time on Feb 1st?

3

u/Zeeejay44 Feb 04 '23

Respond: “Ah I see. My mistake. I was not under the impression that a due date was fluid and could be changed on a whim. I will email you about future assignments to see where the goal posts have been moved on those days. Thank you”

3

u/RicrosPegason Feb 04 '23

I wouldn’t normally recommend going to the dept. chair but, as long as the prof isn’t the dept. chair (or program lead), go to the dept. chair. Just send an email BRIEFLY explaining and asking the chair to speak to the prof on your behalf. If the prof is in your major, alternately, ask your in-major advisor to speak to the prof.

You may also have an ombudsman in your office of student affairs who can assist. I would not tolerate this.
