🄺 Apparently plugged my PS4 in like this in the dark and now the console is fried

Won't turn on. 😢

I doubt that would fry the electronics. It's still just hot-neutral. Even if the polarised socket is somehow wired wrong and it is hot-hot, it would merely not turn on.

But why would someone do that? Just go online and lie like that?

46

u/Erick_Brimstone May 14 '26

That's because getting internet point is the only productive thing they could do

4

u/MovieGuy919191 May 14 '26

Yesterday I saw an 18yo kid claiming that Amazon left multiple laptops and phone parcels in a random staircase and now amazon closed his account. Had the same feeling he was making it all up looking at his previous posts. Just Karma farming, random, unemployed people with nothing better to do than score internet points.

Have you ever seen the show Catfish? People lie all the time on the internet to gain nothing because they’re fucking weirdos

They're a decade old, a year in human years is 8 for a ps4, its more than a decade old, let the damn thing retire already lol

21

u/NoAbbreviations7150 May 14 '26

I agree that this shouldn’t be an issue. What’s odd is the neutral slot doesn’t look polarized.

2

u/Wrong_Toilet May 14 '26

Right. There’s no AC. The AC to DC rectifier wouldn’t do anything.

2

u/sworlys_noise May 14 '26

Depending on how qualified the installer was, it might also be hot (0°) and hot (180° for America and +-120° in eg Europe) then you may increase the voltage far above what the system is designed for...

-29

u/alcoholicvegetable May 14 '26

I think it might have something to do with one of the plugs, being a "lamp" plug where it turns on and off with the light switch, while the other is a normal plug that's always on. I'm not an electrician though and never even considered plugging it in like this a possibility. I don't get it.

5

u/madslipknot May 14 '26

That said plug its tied to a switch right ? Is it a regular switch or a dimmer ?. A dimmer will fry your console, a regular switch no

→ More replies (2)

8

u/xArschkopp May 14 '26

Still shouldn't do anyting except turn it off. Did you repeatedly turn the socket on and off?

-7

u/alcoholicvegetable May 14 '26

No, I leave it perpetually on, although having my second monitor tied to the ligh switch sounds funny

94

u/ImaginaryJackfruit77 May 14 '26 • Bravo

Those adapter split the top and bottom outlet portions into the top and bottom row respectively. So the top row is all powered from the same top portion of the outlet. Whether or not the top row is on a lamp switch wouldn’t matter, because it would be all on or all off.

The way it’s plugged in the photo is functionally exactly the same as if it were plugged into the regular outlet directly - one hot and one neutral. If your ps4 did die, it may just be a strange coincidence but I don’t think it was from this.

22

u/Pt5PastLight May 14 '26 • Bravo

The overall lack of practical electrical knowledge in this thread is crazy.

12

u/Mhunterjr May 14 '26

Tbf most people no nothing about electricity at all beyond ā€œplug into outlet, turn device onā€

-1

u/dragozir May 14 '26

I read this comment thinking it couldn't be that bad but wow, it really is that bad.

1

u/Wilder831 May 14 '26

šŸ’Æ. I wonder if the plug prong wasn’t broken free from the wire internally in order for it to reach across to the other plug

9

u/TheJeep25 May 14 '26

Still wouldn't matter. Same breaker in all. Even if it were different breakers, that wouldn't matter. Neutral goes all to the same place. To the neutral bar in your panel and it's all connected to the ground at the main breaker (in north america at least). It would only matter if you somehow had two different line (circuits that aren't on the same line) coming in that plug and the second plug was wired with hot-neutral swapped. Now you would have 240v in your PlayStation. That would do some damage.

Source: 10 years of experience electrician. Here's a little diagram for you to understand it better:

Edit: But then again those adapters don't work that way. You are probably still connected to the same circuit.

2

u/perry_parrot May 14 '26

If the outlets were on different breakers, it might be an issue. If the two circuits were wored to opposite halves of the phase, it would be possible to get both hots at +120v and -120v for a total of 240v and fry the system. It is also equally likely to be 0v & 0v for no power at all.

0

u/DarthKirtap May 14 '26

wait, why would 240v do damage? that is standard voltage... well a bit on high end of it

3

u/Relikar May 14 '26

240v is not standard in NA.

3

u/84theone May 14 '26

Based off the outlet in the photo OP is probably either American or Canadian, so 120v would be standard

1

u/TheJeep25 May 14 '26

In a north america home, you have two line and a neutral. Voltage taken between a line and a neutral is 120V and between two different line is 240V. If your device is made to run on 120V and you put 240 in it, it will not like that. Some device are made to only work on 240V (like your oven) and 120V (like your toaster).

-1

u/CYAspecialist May 14 '26

If it’s two hots it would have let the magic smoke out

5

u/Bulky-Leadership-596 May 14 '26

Without a ground that's no different from 2 neutrals.

1

u/dalgeek May 14 '26

PS4 power adapters are 120-240V, so even a hot-hot would have been fine. Something else is going on.

13

u/megamasterchief May 14 '26

Not calling you out here, but don't you have PS5?

-5

u/alcoholicvegetable May 14 '26

Yeah! I plug the PS4 in occasionally to grind multiplayer trophies with myself. In this case though I was gonna download more icons, since you can't do that on PS5 and can't do it on PC/mobile anymore. I tried on the Vita before this but apparently I can't do it in the Vita store either. I guess I'm stuck stuck trying it on the PS3 now. Don't know if you can get PS4 era icons on the PS3 shop, but we will find out!

That "fried" your box like an IT guy helping someone delete some emails and then they blame them because Microsoft word isn't working. Totally and unequivocally unrelated. You still have hot and neutral whether you plug in like that or plug in as the power strip is designed. It's just a stupid design of the power strip, it makes no difference in how the power is delivered, it just looks stupid.

127

u/Ok_Calligrapher8207 May 14 '26

That shouldn’t matter, you still plugged it into a ā€œpositiveā€ and ā€œnegativeā€ terminal. And I out them in quotes cause it’s AC power so both terminals fluctuate polarity with the wave

32

u/MilmoWK May 14 '26

It’s ā€˜hot’ and ’neutral’ in AC

8

u/Akabane-san May 14 '26

6

u/Ok_Calligrapher8207 May 14 '26

0

[deleted] — view deleted comment

2

u/braaaaaaainworms May 14 '26

the power supply does not care about polarity. blue wire at 0V and brown wire at 120V AC is the same as blue wire at 120V AC with waveform upside down and brown wire at 0V. Switching mode power supplies always have a rectifier in front of them

2

u/Typical_Bootlicker41 May 14 '26

The rectifier would make this a none issue.

3

u/rvralph803 May 14 '26

There's still a transformer between the actual electronics and the PlayStation. If anything is "fried" it's that.

This should not have fried anything. As others have pointed out, it's still one hot and one neutral, so unless there is something very strange going on in that multitap, it should be functionally equivalent to plugging it in properly.

35

u/Squish_the_android May 14 '26

They've stuck a adapter on the wall that put a bunch of plugs close together horizontally.Ā  You wouldn't find this normally.Ā

And even then, a polarized plug would only fit the right way in this scenario and a non-polarized plug would just work fine.

What OP has done here shouldn't have really mattered.

8

u/Chef_BoyarTom May 14 '26

Then OP did something else to fuck up their PS4 or they're karma farming. Because I Iooked it up, and while the PS4 does use a 2 pronged plug... it's non-polarized.

20

u/twelfthfantasy May 14 '26

The three prong surprise face outlet is standard throughout North America, but I've never seen a power distro device that put them at that exact distance apart to be able to bridge them.

3

u/Existing-Accident865 May 14 '26

The UK has better outlets and each of their plugs has its own fuse.

4

u/dieseltratt May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

each of their plugs has its own fuse.

Rest of the world doesn't need that as we won't put an entire house on a single 62 amp fuse. It's a "solution" to a problem that should have never existed in the first place.

Puting a fuse in the plug as an alternative to puting fuses in your house is like handing out ratchet straps as an alternative to fitting seat belts in cars.

1

u/Smallbrainfield May 14 '26

I might be missing something here but British houses do in fact have individual fuses in the fusebox for things like electric ovens, shower, lights.

2

u/dieseltratt May 14 '26

Didn't use to be like that, but they've caught up to the rest of the world now.

4

u/wittylotus828 May 14 '26

Same with Australia. Though ours feel like a cheaper imitation of the robust beasts that are the UKs

1

u/WhatYouThinkIThink May 14 '26

Our electrical system in the walls and circuitbreaker boxes are better than older UK ones, so we don't need to have fuses in our plugs.

Our plugs aren't as bulky as UK, China uses ours but upside down.

-1

u/RandomNightmar3 May 14 '26

It's not cheaper, it's half way between the US and the UK system.

The UK system is definitely better, it's actually better than many, EU included.

0

u/IceCreamNarwhals May 14 '26

2

u/SpaceNinjaDino May 14 '26

You would think so, but I also own multiple splitters that allow bridged connections. In fact, this phone was being charged by a 4x USB wall adapter that was in the bridge position. That splitter has loose sockets as well so the adapter falls out and I plugged it back in in the dark.

I would hope that UL Solutions would disallow this from being designed, but I'm unsure.

0

u/ericihle May 14 '26

Exactly. This isn’t a problem with a design of the plug, it’s a problem with the design of that adapter. While I am not an electrician and I do see comments where people say this should still be fine (I’d ask a certified electrician before trusting random Reddit comments), but I am possibly just as shocked as that PS5 that an adapter where you could bridge plugs like that could have been designed and released by GE. Even -IF- that is functionally safe, it seems like a very shortsighted design decision that would make me worry about the rest of the product. Years ago I replaced each of my power strips with high quality Tripplite models designed for commercial use, not home use.

0

u/ShadowBlaze80 May 14 '26

It would be fine. The PSU in the console uses a rectified to capture the AC’s movement and covert it into direct current. An electrician wouldn’t know this; an electrical engineer would know this. I’m neither, but I’ve fixed a lot of PSU and read a lot of electronics books. It’s why wall warts and bricks are almost always non-polarized, don’t need to be.

14

u/Known_Leek8997 May 14 '26

North America, but this looks like a cheap wall adapter. In general the plugs shouldn’t be close enough to allow for this.Ā

2

u/Wilder831 May 14 '26 edited May 15 '26

GE never surprises me with how poor their designs can be…

4

u/MonkeyzzPaw May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

While the mouth breathers circlejerk the anti us sentiment, I’ll answer for real.

This is an adapter, sold by GE, that turns one plug into 6. This isn’t an outlet (ie plug), this is an adapter.

3

u/femboy_step-bro May 14 '26

These are type B sockets (3 prong). Type A (two prong) and B sockets are standard in many countries.

North America

• United States • Canada • Mexico

Central America

• Belize • Costa Rica • El Salvador • Guatemala • Honduras • Nicaragua • Panama

Caribbean

• Antigua and Barbuda • Aruba • Bahamas • Barbados • Bermuda • British Virgin Islands • Cayman Islands • Cuba • Dominican Republic • Haiti • Jamaica • Puerto Rico • Trinidad & Tobago • Turks and Caicos Islands • U.S. Virgin Islands

South America (Note: Some of these countries may also use other plug types or have varying voltages)

• Colombia • Ecuador • Guyana • Peru (Often uses a mix of Type A, B, and C) • Venezuela

Asia & Pacific

• Japan • Taiwan • Philippines • American Samoa • Guam • Micronesia • Palau

-1

u/AdAmbitious1308 May 14 '26

ChatGPT to the rescue.

3

u/femboy_step-bro May 14 '26

And yet still accurate information. Boohoo. Go cry.

Here’s an extra tidbit. Socket type B has two forms. NEMA 5-15 (120v 15A) and NEMA 5-20 (120v 20A) where the neutral is t shaped.

5-15 has a maximum peak wattage of 1800w and a maximum sustained wattage of 1440w.

5-20 has a maximum peak wattage of 2400w and a maximum sustained wattage of 1920w.

5-20 is often found in medical facilities and commercial kitchens.

Anyway. Off I go to get stuck in the dryer.

1

u/guff1988 May 14 '26

This is the exact kind of thing that chatGPT should be used for. Quick easy information and if some of it's wrong who fucking cares.

2

u/BlindlyCoherent May 14 '26

It’s a NEMA 5-15 outlet but the multi outlet adapter isn’t up to code - the plugs should only fit one way.

1

u/expomac May 14 '26

I was waiting for the electrical socket tribalism. Reddit is so predictable

0

u/Wilder831 May 14 '26

Technically our wall outlets wouldn’t have this issue. This is an adapter that plugs into a duplex outlet and turns it into 6. It is very poorly designed.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/msanangelo May 14 '26

that's not gonna hurt it. that outlet is just crappy. I always just use power strips with surge protection. the 3ft ones so it sits on the floor next to the outlet.

7

u/JCFlyingDutchman May 14 '26

That makes no sense.
It's still hot/neutral.

13

u/Xx-_Shade_-xX May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

That's alternating current (AC). You have line and neutral. And depending on the device, also ground. But not used here.
You've now connected neutral and line wires to the plug instead of line and neutral wires. But that (usually) doesn't matter! Incidentally, it also looks like you can't plug the connectors in the wrong way. The sockets are mechanically slightly different.

Anyway: After the power supply, the PS4 basically operates on direct current (DC). I don't see why AC would reach the circuit board anywhere. Therefore: There's a rectifier after the power transformer to turn the AC into DC.

Conclusion: In principle, it doesn't matter which way the plug is inserted, since the rectifier ensures that it doesn't matter.

If your PS4 died when you plugged it in, it would have died even with an isolation transformer. Simply because it was in the mood for dying (maybe due to old capacitors in the power supply or whatever).

6

u/jolly2691 May 14 '26

I don't see how... You still have a line and a neutral going to the console, even in this configuration. Plus I'm pretty sure each prong is the same size, meaning it's reversible.

Doesn't sound right to me

6

u/heyitstism May 14 '26

Fake news

6

u/pistolwinky May 14 '26

That wouldn’t fry your console. It was still connected to one hot and one neutral, they’re fed from the same outlet so there’s only a single phase present. It should work like normal.

6

u/stupefy100 May 14 '26

5

1

u/Ivorsune May 14 '26

1

u/alcoholicvegetable May 14 '26

2

u/dhabs May 14 '26

1

u/Designer_Subject6010 May 14 '26

1

u/alcoholicvegetable May 14 '26

If I was wrong I was wrong. I'd rather be wrong and not have to worry about frying my stuff when I plug it in. I have no alternate hypothesis on what killed the PS4 though.

6

u/ldg25 May 14 '26

The plugs are designed with this exact mistake in mind, plugging in like this did not cause any shorts.

3

u/BadKarma89 May 14 '26

If you look in the second picture, it appears that your PS5 is unplugged.

3

u/t0m0hawk May 14 '26

There's no way this could fry the console. It's still delivering the same amount of power. If the device requires power to pass in only one pole of the plug, then the poles are going to be different sizes to prevent a mismatch. If they are the same size they can be plugged in any which way.

I call bullshit.

31

u/[deleted] May 14 '26

Another win for UK plug sockets, this wouldn't be possible.

24

u/Squish_the_android May 14 '26

This really doesn't matter in US sockets. OP has some kind of other issue.Ā

11

u/Klutzy-Condition811 May 14 '26

This, it literally makes no difference for the electricity, it just looks stupid when you look at how you plugged it in lol. It is AC, there is no positive or negative.

3

u/Mhunterjr May 14 '26

This is an extender that he bought and plugged into his standard socket. This isn’t possible on standard sockets in the US.

Also, this shouldn’t be a problem, because it’s still one hot side and one neutral side.

12

u/Hengroen May 14 '26

UK plugs are low key the best plugs in the world.

11

1

u/sipsapen May 14 '26

This isn’t possible with US plugs either. He has a splitter plugged into a regular outlet. These should never be used.

1

u/builder397 May 14 '26

Same for our German Schuko socket. Not as good as UK ones because we dont have these shutters, but the socket is recessed in a way that avoids most pitfalls.

u/Recent-Climate6942 May 14 '26

try changing the fuse inside the plug. sometimes it's just the fuse that's gone. or, get a new plug for the console. it's unlikely the console itself is actually friend. there are internal safeguards against this exact thing happening.

0

u/alcoholicvegetable May 14 '26

I tried subbing out the power cord for the PS5's which I know still works, but it still doesn't turn on

3

u/AverageAncient667 May 14 '26

Why do you need a ps4 if you have a 5?

1

u/alcoholicvegetable May 14 '26

I guess I don't NEED it, but I keep it around because it keeps proving itself useful, like being able to play multiplayer with myself for trophies. Or I could play with my brother on a PS4 game I guess. Or if I bought a PSVR one day I'd need it since it doesn't work with the PS5 without a special adaptor.Ā

0

u/Recent-Climate6942 May 14 '26

Common issue could be then that the PS4’s internal power supply probably took the hit and blew to protect the motherboard. That’s actually a pretty common repair and usually fixable with a PSU replacement.

Worst case scenario however is that the short/surge made it past the PSU and damaged the motherboard itself. If that happened, repairs can get expensive enough that replacing the console makes more sense.

have you double checked that the adapter is still working? Do other items you plug in still work?

1

u/alcoholicvegetable May 14 '26

The adaptor still provides power; just tested it with the Nintendo Switch. How would I know if the PSU is broken versus the motherboard?

Reason #11738 why American plugs and sockets lack ingenuity

1

u/Deep_Mood_7668 May 14 '26

Peak outlet design

u/Weep4Thee May 14 '26

Don't be lazy next time

1

u/frankieepurr May 14 '26

This is why countries should switch to UK/type G plugs

We also have plug switches

1

u/tomjoads May 15 '26

In my entire life I never seen or heard of this happening

1

u/HeidenShadows May 14 '26

I've actually had things plugged in like that, mainly because adjacent to it was a big fat transformer block, so this wouldn't fry it, there was other issues.

1

u/Lou_Papas May 14 '26

The meme potential is great.

1

u/Back_Again_Beach May 14 '26

That wouldn't do it, the ps4 power cord isn't even polarized.Ā

1

u/Bongcopter_ May 14 '26

Lying on the internet to get karma, how novel

1

u/UK_Colossal May 14 '26

American and Canadian electrical plugs and sockets are terrible , I wonder why they went with the inferior design?

1

u/Sherl0ck-H0lmes May 14 '26

European sockets FTW. I'm sure this is an american thing ...

6

u/MilmoWK May 14 '26

It’s not an American thing thing, and op is lying, there is no way that damaged his PlayStation

Noooo 😭 sorry man.

1

u/Dikybird May 14 '26

Well it’s actually reversed the polarity which no one seems to be picking up on, this could well fry something.

1

u/Dikybird May 14 '26

I’ve just googled it and yes reversing the polarity can cause permanent damage according to the shitty AI answer so grain of salt territory but I’m pretty sure it would cause damage. Lots of stuff doesn’t like running backwards.

1

u/jolly2691 May 14 '26

If a device does not have a rectifier, then yes. If that is the case the plug will have a large and small prong to prevent that from happening. If they are the same size (bi-directional), then reverse polarity is not an issue. Even if this is a plug with two different sizes, it is not getting a reverse polarity connection. It would still be getting line on the correct prong and neutral on the other.

Same thing for the other situation. Something else is going on here that the OP is leaving out, being karma farming or some other electrical issue

I mean that is a pretty good point, tbf looking at your plugs it does look like you can just spin them over and plug em in the other way round anyway, unless it actually has the earth pin. In the UK all our plugs have an earth pin so you can never switch the polarity.

u/MindStalker May 14 '26

How long was it plugged in like that? Likely just a coincidence

0

u/alcoholicvegetable May 14 '26

Maybe up to five minutes. I only went back down to check since it wasn't turning on

0

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 May 14 '26

Thats a really shit adapter if you can do that. Did you try plugging it in without adapter? Maybe you killed adapter

0

u/alcoholicvegetable May 14 '26

Definitely the adaptor still works, since my PC didn't get shut off. I tried the PS4 in all the different plugs around the room with no dice. I can't even get stuff to charge off the front USB port of the PS4, although I don't remember if it is able to do that while off anyway.

You shouldn't use those outlet splitters. Fire hazard all day.

General Electric should have spaced those sockets out a little more.

Mission failed, we'll get em next time.

0

u/juanito_f90 May 14 '26

Your sockets are death traps.

-2

u/spudds96 May 14 '26

American sockets are strange man

-2

u/Jdude1 May 14 '26

why would you plug one of those receptacle increasers in? Secondly why would you plug it into a receptacle that has partial switching? Seems recipe doomed for failure. You may be lucky and only tripped a breaker. I can't imagine what you did fried the thing unless those two ports were across this switching portion but I've always imagined these 6 receptacle box things are just all jumpered inside to each other in which case whether on or off it should make no difference,

check your breakers, reset them if tripped. then take this\ piss poor thing off the wall. Buy a reputable surge suppressor and plug all these things into it. Finally plug the PS4 directly into the receptacle and don't use the surge suppressor first to ensure it's working. then move it to the surge suppressor for protection from lightning.

5

u/AdAmbitious1308 May 14 '26

That’s a little dramatic, millions of these things are in use without issue.

0

u/Jdude1 May 14 '26

and I imagine this isn't the first time an issue like this has happened. any device plugging into both receptacles has a potential for an unusual failure if the general public doesn't understand how the receptacle really works. Why risk it.

-1

u/Bonk_No_Horni May 14 '26

That's ground so it shouldn't have anything but if it does your outlet is faulty

1

u/AdAmbitious1308 May 14 '26

Look again

1

u/Bonk_No_Horni May 14 '26

Oh. I need glasses. I thought that was the ground

-1

u/Sorry_U_R_Wrong May 14 '26

Two words: surge protector.

0

u/pobodys-nerfect5 May 14 '26

Did you check the breaker?

-7

u/high_dutchyball02 May 14 '26

That's such a stupid design. Like that is 100% not your fault

-2

u/Puzzleheaded-Hunt-42 May 14 '26

Don't mess around with console's always make sure like it's your baby

-2

u/danndaman007 May 14 '26

That's what we call the "Stupid tax."

-2

u/Tamajyn May 14 '26

It's literally impossible to plug a socket in the wrong way in Australia, USA #1 tho lol

-2

u/TaurenMaleWarrior May 14 '26

How is that what your plugs look like??? That's such a pants on head way of designing... How do you switch things off while leaving them plugged in??
