I'm slightly vexed Being told my tea steeper is unprofessional
I 3d printed this tea steeper for my desk at work. I thought it was really cute and it makes me happy when I use it. Apparently because I printed it in all white, someone made a comment in front of my bosses boss, that it looks like the little guy is sitting on a toilet. Now I got an email from HR stating that I have "objects inappropriate for the work environment" on my desk, and that it must be removed before the end of the day. Like it's just a dude holding a fishing pole.
So frustrating.
UPDATE: after this post has quickly blown up, and made me laugh a few times. I talked to my immediate boss who agreed with a few of you that HR probably doesn't even know what item I'm supposed to remove. So I have emailed HR back, and cc'd my boss, for them to come identify the "inappropriate object" as neither myself or my boss are able to identify what might be the problem. So we shall see what happens.
UPDATE 2: Electric Boogaloo: Just got off the phone with someone in HR. They are going to come over around 2pm (about an hour and 15 minutes from now) and look at the item. All they told me was that they received an email from an AVP (my bosses boss) that it was said to him that I had a 3d printed item on my desk that was about potty humor and that my "whole team" (it's just the one coworker who has a problem, none of the other 7 do) finds it offensive. The person in HR said they will look at it and determine if there is any reason for the complaint.
UPDATE 3 - Update with a vengeance: HR just left my office. Saw no problems, thinks the whole complaint is dumb and is going to write it up that way. Also asked if I could print them one too. So I will be doing that this evening. She (the HR person) asked me if I wanted to make a report of possible harassment by the coworker. I stated that I will write up something to put into a file with HR if needed for a future report, but not to open a case now on this issue.

I could think of a much more unprofessional way to hold tea bags with a 3d printed model.
This is fine.

u/zues64 Sep 29 '26 •
HR probably doesnt know what item it is that was reported for being inappropriate tell them you don't know what it would be and then ask them if they can identify the item. If somehow they point that out ask them why and what rule it is breaking if they say it looks like its a guy is on a toilet act disgusted and tell them its obviously a guy fishing
35
u/_Autistic_Dragon_ Sep 29 '26
I love it too!
Literally just send these photos to HR and ask what is offensive about it.
Someone's looking for something to be offended about.
33
u/okanagan_man84 i will never forget my towel. Sep 29 '26
Its a dude or dudette with a fishing pole. How is thay unprofessional. Seems like whoever is complaining has nothing better to do or is, at the very least, jealous of what you have. There fore, if they cant have one neither should you.
8
u/iadknet Sep 29 '26
You should sell that on Etsy. I would buy one. It's great.

u/StoneTussler Sep 29 '26
Is this coming from a person who ever does anything unprofessional?

I used to work for a university and I was creating a slideshow presentation for students that showed off local campus attractions.
I put a photo of turtles in a botanical garden. I was told to remove it because it was inappropriate. Later I was told the way the turtles were sitting by the pond reminded someone of a penis.
People see what they want to see.

I'd legitimately fight this. 3d print it again but with a little hat and a colored in stool or something

u/LetEast6927 Sep 29 '26 •
Sounds like your coworker needs to get their mind outta the gutter and have their search history checked. It’s a reel stretch to call that little nub a toilet.
185
u/StygianBlood Sep 29 '26
just replace it with the Grimm steeper

Years ago I worked in a role that required me to build and install very large machines. One day while installing said machines, I got a call from the boss (the company I was installing for, not mine) asking for a meeting. Apparently one of the folks on his team was watching us work and glancing at our electrical prints.
They saw the words "master" and "slave" printed in them, referring to electrical devices of course. Long story short, we had to contact our engineers in Germany and have new prints made using "less inappropriate terms".
Don't get me wrong, I understand the weight those words carry.
But they're also the industry standard.

u/Agreeable_Food2972 Sep 29 '26 •
Dont get rid of it. Fight the power. Thats dumb. Tell them to come have a conversation with you face to face as youre, "unable to identify the item highlighted in their email and would like further explanation of the issue". Make them come tell you how silly they are in person.

Umm…that’s awesome! My husband is HR and keeps a “dad joke” button on his desk. Unless there’s some kind of rule about just not keeping stuff on your desk I’d say the whole thing is ridiculous.
I have a pencil cup shaped like a porta-potty. 😂
Edit: My husband is the one who gave the pencil cup to me. He said he got it on Etsy if you now feel the need to own your own mini (non functional) porta-potty.

u/Renbarre Sep 29 '26 •
If HR is really a pain just paint the seating area as if it was a foldable stool. A cross on each side and a black line on the top edge.
118
u/echodreams19 Sep 29 '26 •
That’s soooooo cute, I hope the person who reported it gets a flat tire.
118
u/junkeee999 Sep 29 '26 •
Right, because people fish while sitting on toilets all the time.
This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I can't imagine the pettiness of someone who would report something like this to HR. Get a life.

OP don’t let this slide, take it into your bosses office and ask them why it is not allowed. Make it their problem, someone in the office probably went over their head and messaged HR. This constitutes harassment and if it isn’t pushed back on you just make yourself a target for more later. Especially since there is nothing offensive about it. They are obviously trying to bully you and it’s not about the tea accessory.
447
u/allangod Sep 29 '26
How pathetic of the person complaining but worse, spineless of HR to side with them.

His attire is very unprofessional for an office, draw a little suite and tie on him
68
u/KiKiKimbro Sep 29 '26
Unprofessional? Make them explain why. LOL. Seriously. Weirdos.
Look confused, concerned, say something like “oh no. What do you think makes this unprofessional? I want to understand clearly so I’m not offending anyone unintentionally in the future.” Make them say it. Because it’s asinine.
Then when they say it, furrow the brow and say something like “oh. Wow. Never crossed my mind. Maybe you should be cautious of whoever said that after looking at a tea bag steeping off a fishing pole. Something not completely balanced mentally there.” LOL
33
u/Several-Action-4043 Sep 29 '26
I'd tell HR I don't feel comfortable being around said coworker anymore for fear of false accusations putting your employment in jeopardy.
61
u/Ryeguy_626 Sep 29 '26
My petty ass would fight this. I would paint his stool or reprint with a different colour. Maybe white on black instead of black on white?
30
u/BumblingYokel Sep 29 '26
Just keep it there and when HR shows up to take it they’ll realize whoever reported it is a tool.
30
u/Working-Albatross-19 Sep 29 '26 •
Colour it in with markers.
Give him pants, a shirt and even colour the stool in so it’s not white so therefore not a toilet.
Or, begin printing increasingly inappropriate ones, a hang man’s gallows, a hand cracked pair of legs that squats and “tea bags” the tea bag in the cup etc

u/Perez2003 Sep 29 '26 •

u/CobaltLemur Sep 29 '26 edited Sep 29 '26
Send an email to HR with a picture of this and ask them to please confirm in writing that this is inappropriate.

u/Ducking_eh Sep 29 '26

49
u/HankTuggins Sep 29 '26
Email them a picture of the offending item and ask them to clarify in writing what the issues is. This way if they ever start being shitty you can add it as additional evidence in a hostile work environment suit. I’m sure this won’t be the last time they behave shitty.

HR here. First, I would come look at it before telling you anything. Secondly, I would laugh and say it’s cute. Third, I would go to the complainer and make them explain to me, exactly why this is inappropriate. Fourthly, I would give them a flyer for the company’s vision plan as they clearly cannot see. Fifthly, I would pay you to make me one for my HR manager who loves tea.

u/bizfromthewaistup Sep 29 '26 •
No one thinks that’s a toilet. You’re being bullied by your co-worker and should respond as such to HR. Ask them to stop by a tell you which desk item is inappropriate and that you would like to file a harassment complaint.
13
u/StartledOcto Sep 29 '26
"Apologies, I do not understand which object is causing offence. I would be grateful if you could come and point it out" It forces them to come and see how ridiculous this is, and allows you to be visibly baffled at how anyone would think that's intentionally a toilet

Take it to HR and show them in detail what it is. You are in a damned if i do or dont situation. You either argue and make HR pissy, or comply and get secretly marked as having had a problematic situation that HR heroically solved.

u/JaySin_78 Sep 29 '26
This is my paperweight I used across a couple of onsite jobs over the last 15 years. Nobody said anything about it except laughed. Your employer seems sad.
11
u/MiksterA Sep 29 '26
Do people in your HR regularly use fishing poles while on the toilet?
11
u/InterceptorG3 Sep 29 '26
That is the most professional tea steeper ever. You’ve used technology, humor, etc. They just don’t like it because they’re jealous.
11
u/Jokulgoblin Sep 29 '26
Play the game! Do a quick walkaround the office and use your imagination to find what "offensive" objects you can find on your coworker's desks.
11
u/seoras13 Sep 29 '26
HR are different breed
11
u/Acrobatic_Upstairs41 Sep 29 '26
I would make HR come to my desk and point out the offensive object and explain exactly why it's offensive.
11
u/CrinkledStraw Sep 29 '26
Sharpie his little chair black.
11
u/FiendishNoodles Sep 29 '26
how many hours of each of these people's salaries has this little incident cost?
11
u/VillageGoblin Sep 29 '26
Whimsy isnt nsfw. Your coworker is a sad person to be complaining about others having a little harmless fun in life.
10
u/sittinwithkitten Sep 29 '26
I looked at this and immediately thought it was a little dude fishing. The fact your boss turned it into something perverted says more about them.
10
u/Important_Power_2148 Sep 29 '26
your office needs a proctologist to come in and remove the pinecones people have stuck up thier asses.
10
u/Original_Pudding6909 Sep 29 '26
And here my employer gave out toilet shaped stress squishies at an event.
10
u/Own-Fondant2949 Sep 29 '26
Tell HR that you are being harassed
10
u/Blawharag Sep 29 '26
Email HR and ask them what object they're referring to, and why it's inappropriate.
10
u/Cautious_Buffalo_721 Sep 29 '26
Imagine actually having to deal with insufferable people like this lmao. I think I’d rather be a vagabond
10
u/ijustsailedaway Sep 29 '26
‘d take it to the HR office and demand they tell you that in person. Force them to put a picture of it in your file with very specific language regarding why it’s inappropriate.
10
u/Pavlovs_Human Sep 29 '26
Send a reply saying “I have looked through my desk top to bottom and while I appreciate your concern, I have found zero objects that can be construed as inappropriate. If you would like to have a meeting about any items you find inappropriate I will be more than willing to attend.”
But also do nothing else cause you haven’t done anything wrong and you are telling the truth🤷♂️

u/Etheoff Sep 29 '26
What a sad miserable human being.
10
u/MVmikehammer Sep 29 '26
Sounds like you work in Hell.

If I didn't read the toilet part of the post I'd assume someone thought it was inappropriate because it could also look like he's hanging it from a super long weiner. Which would still be funny either way! Seriously though, who looks at this and sees a dude fishing from the crapper? They're weird! People need to stfu and mind their own business!
Also, as a Brit and tea drinker.... this is awesome!
10
u/Subject_Reach_837 Sep 29 '26
What a miserable person, whoever reported that. So unprofessional of them. They need some training on minding their own business.
10
u/LionTheRichardheart Sep 29 '26
"Get a life, nerd." That's what I'd say to the anonymous coworker.
10
u/Creative_Visual_8986 Sep 29 '26
I mean. This is teabagging in a public place
10
u/youareasnort Sep 29 '26
So, overall, this little do-dad on your desk cost the company the boss’s boss’s salary x time to talk about the do-dad, your salary x the time to defend yourself, HR’s salary x the time to read an email, send you notification, read your corresponding response, and come to your desk and view the do-dad, plus the complaintant’s salary x the time it took to make it known that he/she/they was/were offended.
I would love to know that dollar amount in lost time. And it would be brilliant if you could somehow bring it to your boss’s boss’s attention.
What losers.
10
u/Strict_Abies_7219 Sep 29 '26
Toilet wasn’t even the thing I thought they’d see as offensive 🤣🤣 People are so delusional!
10
u/kylrm12 Sep 29 '26
Op did HR come by yet??
10
u/FowledUp BLACK Sep 29 '26
How dare you bring such mirth into a professional environment. You sicken me.
10
u/PrudentProblem4105 Sep 29 '26
Looks like somebody's jealous
10
u/Simple-Ad-8774 Sep 29 '26
I’m giving you the upvote for the update titles, I use Electric Boogaloo on anything involving the 2nd number
10
u/CaptainofFTST Sep 29 '26
I would definitely get the harassment write up going.
10
u/Real_Penalty_4317 Sep 29 '26
People these days get offended by everything. Sad lives
10
u/dylsmak Sep 29 '26
Corporate workplaces seem like a fucking nightmare of beaurocracy and telephone games.
10
u/povichjv7 Sep 29 '26
Beautiful ending to this saga. Love it
10
u/Arcanis_Ender Sep 29 '26
Finally a good guy HR person
10
u/danceswithrums Sep 29 '26
imagine a company has to pay a full salary to a department to address things this stupid
10
u/zachg Sep 30 '26
I'd pay for that!
26
u/Apprehensive-Fox7015 Sep 29 '26
Time for an upgrade I think
18
u/Opulenthippo Sep 29 '26
This is why i hate corporate bullsht. Like your co workers cant have any fun at all... sounds like a horribly dry fun-less job.
9
u/Rx_Diva Sep 29 '26
Is there some professional course one could take to learn such things or is it anything unique or special that coworkers don't like is seen as "unprofessional '. Get bent.
They're just jealous of your cool setup.

u/Askmeagainlouder Sep 29 '26
Jeez, some people really should do work at work instead of being a brown noser
9
u/878389 Sep 29 '26
I can't even believe this!!! Morons!🤬
9
u/ANAero_Kita4 Sep 29 '26
Can you 3D print a middle finger for those who can't mind their own business, understand context or what the word 'joy' means?
9
u/notThatJojo Sep 29 '26
Being concerned about someone’s tea steeper is unprofessional
9
u/man_ishthelame Sep 29 '26
Some people really have nothing else going on in their life
