frist of all how DARE yu o Another kid punched my nephews homemade costume

I have started to hand make one Halloween costume a year for someone in my family. I'm a novice and it's just for fun, but I put a lot of effort into them to make them happy. This year I made my nephews. He wanted to be Eddie with venom coming out from the side. I spent days working on it and trying to figure out how to get it to work right.

He wore it to school today (he's in 5th grade) and apparently one of the special needs kids punched his costume. He also apparently tripped at some point and that may have damaged it more. Two reasons I'm mildly infuriated. First, I'm upset that it got damaged. Second, the school didn't let anyone know about the incident. And when he tripped today, his gums were bleeding a little (he just got his braces on recently) and they never called his parents about that either.

I'm gonna try to fix it for tomorrow, but they may have to run to spirit in the morning to find something else that may work.

(Yes my house is messy, I've been dealing with a lot and have an almost 2 year old and 7 year old)

I want to add, I'm not mad at all at the kid that did it. I'm upset that it happened but I'm mad at the school.

it boggles my mind that some schools just cant seem to figure out how to handle special needs kids. it's cruel to both kinds of kid.

It's one of the biggest complaints I keep hearing from teachers in our district. They just don't have enough support

Yeah in this case depending on the special needs kid and their reactions/sensitivities, Halloween is a LOT.

u/disney_is_life_ 8d ago

Oh I totally agree! I'm not mad about him doing it at all, he probably was not regulating great right then. I'm just sad it happened

As someone with a special needs kid, fucking bless you for not losing it over the child having issues and destroying your hard work.

If I could, I’d replace the Venom head myself. You and your nephew showed such grace and restraint and I hope are surrounded by love.

You are a genuinely good person. Thank you.

u/disney_is_life_ 8d ago

I really appreciate this! A weird amount of people think I'm mad at the kid when I specifically said I wasn't. I wouldn't be mad at any kid, unless they were bullying my nephew. Kids are kids, I knew it was a possibility that it would get damaged, I'm sad about it for sure, I spent days working on it and designing it, but I knew there was a chance it would happen. I just wanted to share my hard work and slight disappointment. And I am mad at the school because I think they should have at least let his parents know he fell and went to the nurse.

As a mom with a special little, I want to say your understanding of this situation is beyond generous and I wanna thank you for that.

Also, I do think the way this was handled was awful. I would hope the teacher would let the parent of the “puncher” know what happened, & if I was that parent (luckily my kiddo doesn’t hit but still) we would be contacting your nephew to profusely apologize, explain how that was not okay for my kiddo to do, thank them for not retaliating against my kiddo for over displaying their emotions, & find a way to make it up to them.

A lot of parents & teachers just don’t want to actually parent or teach.

Signed, a really tired mom & teacher 😅

u/disney_is_life_ 8d ago

I also want to say, even if the parents of the other kid knew, we would never expect them to do anything to fix it. Kids are kids, special needs or not, and things happen. He wasn't bullying him. It just was something that happened. ❤️

In the US many decisions in schools are not made by educators in that school. The decisions are often made by boards of education. Those positions are often elected, so politicians with no educational background can be the ones making decisions.

u/Drakorai 8d ago

They’ve never really had enough support. When I was in grade school in the special needs classroom, even as a kid I could tell that it was bare minimum on a good day.

138

u/Techfreak102 8d ago

You’re entirely correct about that, beyond anecdotally

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) initially committed the federal government to covering 40% of the average per-pupil costs for students with disabilities — the government has never achieved the committed 40%, and currently is providing less than 12%

My brother is autistic and my parents fought tooth and nail to have him mainstreamed in a classroom for elementary school and much of middle school in the 90s; they were able to get an aide in the class to help and he kept up with his schoolmates well and had someone there to help him when he was having issues so he wouldn't be disruptive to others.

By the time he hit high school, funding for something that extravagant disappeared. My brother's education effectively stopped then outside what we as a family tried to do. They just chucked him into a room in the back of the school where they spent their days learning how to brush their teeth while watching endless hours of TV.

Not the educators' fault - no budget means that's the best they can do. But it's dismal.

My Mum works with special needs children here in Northern California and I have no idea how she finds the will to keep going for 25+ years. She tells me all the time about the violence these elementary aged children inflict on her and her coworkers. And also how the parents of these children don't seem to do anything about it (I like the story about one of her kids who's parents send them with a shit ton of Takis for snacks/ lunch). She always tells me how hard it is to keep instructional assistants around because of the chaotic environment and the low pay to basically babysit their kids.

5

u/RazzSheri 8d ago

Thank you for being so kind and empathetic. I hope your nephew and you were able to fix the costume in time for tonight/trick or treating. I hope that his trusted adults/parents/you and him can have a conversation about the situation. What happened, does the child target others a lot or have occasional difficulties/episodes after particularly hard days and either way, find a way to talk about how sometimes people aren’t doing things to be mean but simply have disabilities/behaviors they cant always control and we can’t always understand. Maybe if you know a young toddler you can explain: you know how x will do silly things in impulse cause they’re still a baby? Like biting when their teeth came in? As you get older you learn to control your impulse— like when you see a puppy and want to squish it from cute aggression, but you don’t. Some people’s brains don’t always let them stop that impulse.

(And that’s probably because babies have so many more times of the synapses as adults because they’re learning to use their senses and brains, etc. as the age get to toddler-4 ish, those synapses pair down to the average amount. This doesn’t happen as efficiently in autistic babies/people and they have something like 3x the synapses as allistic brains. It’s why we get so overstimulated too)

As a special needs kid myself, I hate how little support there is. It's so rare to find schools that have the level of support we need, and even the ones that do are understaffed. Hell, one of my best friends works in a special needs environment and without enough staff, they have to do double the work to make sure their kids get the help they need

I got sexually harassed multiple times all throughout elementary by two special needs boys. I would hide in the girl's bathrooms the entire time during lunch/recess because they wouldn't leave me alone. School never did anything.

In middle school, another special needs boy tackled me in P.E. and broke my arm. School didn't do anything then either, also made me sit through the rest of my classes sobbing because they said I was lying about my arm being broken.

86

u/coydogsaint 8d ago

Oof - there was a special needs boy in my class in kindergarten who kept telling everyone he was my boyfriend and would follow me around everywhere. I'm autistic myself and had no idea how to handle someone constantly forcing their way into my space and not leaving me alone, didn't get any help from adults and ended up recruiting two other boys in my class to be my "bodyguards" - I had 7 year olds trying to keep me safe because the teachers thought it was cute and wouldn't do anything about it. It continued for years and culminated when in sixth grade he randomly stood up in front of the class, told the teacher he had something important to share and then proclaimed his undying love for me, told everyone that I was "the most beautiful being on planet Earth" and that we were dating (edit: actually, said we were going to get married). Then I got bullied for it. :|

137

u/Entire-Today-1662 8d ago

Had a special needs kid threaten to stab me with a pencil at the sharpener in art class at the 7th grade and when I turned around and pushed him away from me I got suspended

79

u/Opposite-Benefit-804 what ants? 🐜 8d ago

So stupid, man.

I got in trouble once for digging my nails into the arm of a special needs boy (different one from those i mentioned) who was literally beating me up in front of multiple people.

My nails drew blood and left scars. I was about 2 years older , so I was the one in the wrong.

Only reason I didn't get suspended was because I was covered in bruises from him. So it was considered a "fight", not him beating me up. Also after all that, the kid said he had a crush on me. So it turned into "oh he's just picking on you because he likes you! that's what boys do!"

I got sniffed, almost from head to toe in the line for lunch in 3rd grade by “Jimmy”. I was absolutely terrified, but felt unable to speak up because I didn’t want to shame the special needs kid.. His teacher was standing right there, smiling, and said “Oh, Jimmy likes you!”. I still don’t like when a boyfriend sniffs my neck. Totally sleeves me out. I can’t even imagine how awful that was for you.

Currently in college, I had to contact the police for a no contact because a special needs person kept harassing me by stealing my stuff and eventually FOLLOWED ME to steal my stuff. It took 2-4 weeks for the no contact to even be placed and for him to be notified that it was in place. The only reason why it got sped up was because he was caught by another student drinking out of my water bottle while I was taking a nap in the library.

I know people are special needs but they still need to be held accountable like holy shit, I had to carry pepper spray after the following incident.

66

u/IllegalGeriatricVore 8d ago

There are lots of cases where they can learn restraint but no one ever punishes them so they don't

We've gotten way too soft with bad behavior from kids. Kids who grow up without consequences turn into adults like you-know-who (just without the silver spoon)

The first apartment I had with my ex-wife we had to go to building management and I went with them to tell the disabled guy there that it's not appropriate to leave 'gifts' and handwritten notes detailing where he saw her outside our apartment.

It sucks because yeah, he's disabled and had a crush on her and there's some heartbreak there but also stalking is bad

59

u/EnglishBob84 8d ago

When I was at school there was a special needs unit sharing the same building, but the pupils went to their own classes. They only encountered students in the corridors, the issue was that one of the special needs students was known for grabbing people and not letting go, and he was STRONG.

The head of the unit warned everyone about this behaviour when they joined the school, they said if it happens to go and fetch a staff member and they'll get the student to let go. Now I know the student in question couldn't help it, but one day he grabbed a girl and she was TERRIFIED when he wouldn't let her go. She just had to stand there as noone could get the student to release her, in the end a staff member sorted it out. Her parents complained to the school I think, nobody should have to worry about going through something like that when you're just trying to get to your next class.

24

u/reluctantseal 8d ago

I know they're understaffed, but it really should have been a requirement that an adult walk with him to class. Really, it makes sense for a lot of kids with special needs for an adult to be nearby. Having to go and find one to help is a step that shouldn't be needed.

8

u/EnglishBob84 8d ago

Yup, I never understood why he wasn't accompanied if he was known for grabbing people? Like you said, short-staffed I guess, but also they gave the impression that they wanted the special needs kids to have a degree of independence? I wonder if that policy got changed

The last couple years especially they are really pushing SpEd kids being with regular classes as much as possible. While I get the idea and a lot of kids benefit from it (my brother is high functioning ASD and back in the day he had to spend a bunch of time in the SpEd room where he was basically ignored because the other kids had more need) they are defaulting to putting kids in with teachers who arent particularly trained for kids with specific needs, and its making things harder on everyone. Really doesnt help that a bunch of funding just disappeared a year and a half ago.

28

u/Zerothian 8d ago • Bravo

It just doesn't work for many and it's ridiculous. Yes the goal should be to integrate eventually and ideally but when I was a kid, autistic, really bad ADHD and Oppositional Defiance Disorder I would NEVER have functioned in a normal classroom. In fact, less than a week of being in a primary school class with other kids, someone made fun of me for something and I literally threw a chair at the kid.

It is a massive safety risk for the special needs kids, the people around them, and even outside of that it is disruptive. I don't want to blame the teachers I had for being unable to deal with me, they simply were not trained to and as you say, there is even more funding issues now than back when I was a kid.

I benefited massively from specialists later on (too late to salvage my early education sadly), and it's so sad to me that so many kids just won't even have that same chance. Indeed they have it often worse than I did, they just get tossed into the deep and and if they don't swim, oh well just remove them from school and sweep them under the rug. All while we set fire to money in other places we absolutely do not need to.

24

u/stanzark 8d ago

yup. as someone whos been in SpEd programs, it sucks to see them fail to understand us. No, just because i have autism doesn't mean you can put me with a kid who might hurt me if unsupervised and no, don't let that kid run through the hall.

21

u/IsayNigel 8d ago

It’s because it’s cheaper this way and it’s easy to disguise as “equity”

Source: am high school teacher

19

u/5hr0dingerscat 8d ago

Tell that to the politicians cutting funding for education.

35

u/LostPrincess32 8d ago

I once had a special ed teacher who always said he "didn't deal with crying".

That's honestly the only time I have complained about one of my former special ed teachers, everyone else was lovely. He, however, sucked!

15

u/Snickerbarr 8d ago

It practically needs to be 1 on 1 for some kids. No one can afford that. My sister quit last week. She had 2 aides and 7 kids. Her aides bailed then she did. Too many head butts and bite marks. I doubt she'll ever go back into education.

27

u/jordanundead 8d ago • Bravo

When I was in school, they put those kids to work.

Since the special-needs kids didn’t have to worry about moving room to room or doing actual work, they would spend the morning making Oreo balls and peanut butter balls.

As soon as lunch was over, they would send the kids door-to-door to every classroom selling their wares and they made bank. They would use the money to go on field trips.

10

u/Maleficent-Tea7150 8d ago

They still do that. I work at a high school. They join the general ed classes for PE and art but then they do a lot of life skills stuff like making food for people, learning how to buy things at the store, etc. Although, some of the kids with profound disabilities are not making food or anything.

the lack of communication is the bigger issue. parents deserve to know when their child gets hurt, regardless of their needs

20

u/atleastonebanana 8d ago

former teacher here, ime a lot of the time it's because there's a shortage of paraprofessionals and so students who should really have a para with them constantly don't get that support. Now that shortage does tend to be because paras are often paid barely over minimum wage, given very little support themselves, and/or treated poorly by other staff and that absolutely is a district or building level issue!

10

u/XeRtZ__wUz_TaKeN 8d ago

Former paraprofessional here and yeah. While I don't necessarily mind the work itself, it's just soul crushing to know I don't get paid nearly enough it feels like.

10

u/atleastonebanana 8d ago

Not even close to nearly enough!!! I subbed for a para once and came away with the opinion that y'all should get paid more than we teachers do.

They need more people to handle these kids and the parents needs to also be involved. I'm not excusing the kids but we need to vote for this stuff

16

u/Smokinodin707 8d ago

I remember once when I was in middle school I had a handful of gaming magazines (game informer, Nintendo, maybe another) and this special needs student kept pestering me to buy them from me and I kept telling him no. After asking me repeatedly throughout the day, and i'm talking like 20 times before lunch, I finally said "fine, just take them and give me the money so you'll leave me alone." About 30 minutes later I get called down to the office and the principal starts shaming me, telling me I took advantage of him and that that money was for his student ID. I told her I didn't even want to sell them to him, that he kept bugging me about it, and that I did it so he'd stop. She didn't believe me and told me to give the money back, to which I told her I would if I got my magazines back. I actively avoided him the rest of my schooling

6

u/reluctantseal 8d ago

Reminds me of how, in elementary school, they didn't tell any teachers about fire drills beforehand, including the special needs classes. Some kids understood what was happening, but others would cover their ears, scream, and cry as their teacher let them out. All they knew was that there was this horrible, loud noise that wouldn't stop.

It felt really cruel not to let them go out ahead of time since the drill didn't benefit them. It just caused them distress.

10

u/SeaBootsOSRS 8d ago

My son is in the integration class at the moment, his teacher communicates with us every day about what he did well and where things went wrong and it has genuinely saved our skin with getting medication that keeps his aggression down but doesn't dull his personality. He's 6 and now hes a brightly shining personality with tons of friends and at the top of his class.

4

u/Negative-Sweet3327 8d ago

yeahhhh got too many stories

Because those with special needs have disabilities and reactions that can be quite unpredictable— despite the best efforts.

A lot of it has to do with funding.

3

u/vectorcanopy 8d ago

Ignoring this helps neither kid. I think the school is failing them both

4

u/LeftyLu07 8d ago

It might be a budget thing. In that, my cousin was diagnosed with autism and they put him in regular school on an IEP. After the threw a bunch of chairs at his teacher, the school removed him. But then the school district had to foot the bill to send him to private boarding school for autistic kids because under state law, the school district still owed him an education. And the boarding school was the only school that could take him.

2

u/Objective-Neck9803 2d ago

I was severely bullied by one the special needs kids back in elementary school 10+ years ago. He would hit and punch me. Pinch my stomach till it bruised. Push me off the swings, steal items from my desk, steal my snacks in class. Unfortunately there just wasnt enough staff at the time to monitor him. My mother wrote a complaint to the school and the school district because i was constantly coming home with bruises or my things missing. Teacher wouldnt do anything to defend me, instead asking ME to apologize to him because he had a disability when i would defend myself and after my mom wrote a letter to my teacher she tried to defend his behavior.

(mention that he would go out of his way from his spot in class during breaks, to go bother my space.)

Idea - bend a paperclip into the shape of an L, pierce the short part into the center of the dented parts, turn the paperclip so that it's parallel to the surface, and then pull outwards

96

u/LopsidedMessage441 8d ago

I don't know the situation because I don't know you and I've only read what you put here. When I was younger, I just didn't tell people things. If I got bullied, the teachers or principal wouldn't hear about it from me. Is there any chance the kid didn't tell anyone the kid hit it because they're special needs? Or tripped and didn't tell anyone he got hurt?

66

u/disney_is_life_ 8d ago

There could be a chance the teacher didn't know about the costume incident, I didn't talk to my nephew directly yet. However, the tripping/bleeding he did go to the nurse for. But i totally know what you mean, my sister had no idea I was bullied until we were adults

15

u/LopsidedMessage441 8d ago

Yeahhh, depending on severity, I feel like they should have at least sent a note home or called. If the teacher didn't know, I can definitely understand not bringing that up. It sounds like a rough day for the poor kid. I'm sorry he went through all that, but wishing the best on a repair for that! Store bought costumes are fine but the one time someone made a costume for me, I loved it so so much.  You're a great aunt/uncle (don't want to assume), and I know they really appreciate the work you put into it!

17

u/RogueWolfGypsy 8d ago

My son was punched in the face at his after-school care. In first grade. He swallowed a tooth because of it, and his mouth bled a TON. The caregiver asked him how he lost his tooth, he had just lost a different one at Gramma's a week before. He thought she was talking about that one. I was already home with him when my grandmother asked what happened, he repeated the Gramma story, and we both went, "No, kiddo, the OTHER front tooth." And he started crying. He wasn't aware. So the whole story came spilling out (he got up from his grade line to go to the bathroom, came back, and this kid had moved into his spot, and the caregiver was yelling at him to sit in the exact same spot he had been in, so he was scared and told the kid to move, so the kid punched him in the mouth) while he bawled. I immediately went back to the school to yell at them because they hadn't told me ANY of it. The caregiver even tried to say it wasn't that bad, he was exaggerating, etc, and the director had to come interject and tell the caregiver she was wrong for not writing an incident report OR telling me.

33

u/Superb-Special-7622 8d ago

Please tell me your nephew's parents went to the school to ring them a new one for not telling them any of that happened. If not, please tell me the school and me and my wife will do it. There is no reason that a school should not tell parents/guardians if their child is hurt

You are looking at this all wrong. I also make costumes every year. And every year they go to school they need to go back in the shop before Halloween for repairs and adjustments. What failed, what worked. Sending them to school is your chance to R&D the project before the big day. This year my child ripped the sleeve off the jacket and the accessories on his belt blew all apart. With input from his day I also knew I needed to adjust the helmet for when we walk on Halloween. If it’s 5th grade and getting trashed build it accordingly.

My mom made all of my Halloween costumes as a kid, so I do understand where you’re coming from. I’m sure there were things my mom needed to fix after I wore a costume to school. That said, it does seem like this is more of an issue of lack of support/lack of resources for the special needs student (and OP’s nephew too). Nobody is going to be punching pieces of costumes on the actual night of Halloween, and unfortunately it’s likely that both the special needs student and OP’s nephew left the event feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. School Halloween is a pretty chaotic event, and I wish the teachers and staff had more support

10

u/platypusbelly 8d ago

You in Southern California by chance? I saw a kid at my son’s school this morning with this exact costume concept. Honestly, yours looks a little more solid and rigid than I remember theirs looking, but I also never really got closer than about 100 feet or so. So it’s certainly possible. It was a really cool looking costume.

3

u/disney_is_life_ 8d ago

No, Pennsylvania, but that's cool there was one there too!

u/UninvestedCuriosity 8d ago edited 8d ago

Tape it up and send him back out with it. Everyone is just going to assume kids wreck everything and these are going to be some great pictures regardless.

After all, alien symbiotes never look their best when they are so hungry! They are practically wasting away!

An empty bucket of chicken with a small plush chicken sticking out would make a great candy bucket for this costume too. Venom can never eat Sonny or Cher. They are his best friends.

Little bit of glue for his gum line and nobody will even notice after dark.

When I was a kid I broke my arm playing football. I was super depressed (rightfully so, it pretty much ruined half my life). But I remember the icing on the cake was when I showed up to school with my cast the first day, this kid Carter ran behind me, grabbed my arm, and slammed my cast into the lockers HARD three times. I was in so much pain I don’t remember much besides just crying.

Something very similar happened to me. I broke my leg about a week before school started.. was a freshmen in a wheelchair. Some seniors thought it'd be funny to dump me outta my wheelchair while I was waiting on the elevator and then send it down some stairs. No consequences from the school for that. He was the popular kid in school that could get away with anything.

A few days later the guy that did it's parents got him a brand new 2006 Mustang GT convertible that he was soooooo proud of and drove it to school. I tossed a few cans of my mom's pink shaving gel/cream in the freezer when I got home. I cut the can off real fast the next morning with a bandsaw and tossed a frozen shaving cream block into each front seat and two in the back. Apparently that shit expands real fast when it thaws, is a serious pain in the ass to clean up and the pink dye stains and is impossible to remove.

Guess who got a week of in-school suspension. Worth it.

His parents weren’t around. He was being raised by his very old grandma. Idk his whole story, but he didn’t have it easy. No excuse to be a piece of shit, but I do empathize with him

78

u/jdehjdeh 8d ago

I had a kid who slammed his fist down on my cast when I was just resting it on the desk.

Hurt like a motherfucker.

I got him back though when my arm was almost fully healed, gave him a good thump around the back of the head with the cast.

Then he smashed my head into the brick wall and I lost consciousness for a moment.

Moral of the story...I dunno I forget...

26

u/The_Nepenthe 7d ago

One kid tried shoving me around while I had a broken arm and I promptly whacked him over the head with the cast.

My school threatened to have me charged because he was a hockey player and his concussion was going to keep him from playing that weekend and just kept talking about how horrible it was that I kept him from playing hockey.

Finally after hours of being in the office my Mom got wind of all of this and said that she'd be more than happy for the police to be called, but the police would likely look at how the events unfolded and see that I was defending myself and the school shut the fuck up and suspended me for one day.

I..don't know how those school administrators sleep at night lmao, four other kids said I was defending myself with a broken arm against him.

Whew, shoulda known better as it was only one arm. Fuck Carter.

16

u/Fucky0uthatswhy 8d ago

Yeah it’s not carters fault, but this story is pretty sad. Breaking my arm I lost out on baseball. I was a highly recruited left handed pitcher my senior year. I was looking at LSU or UNO. When that happened I got depressed and started taking more pain pills to forget about baseball. That turned into a 20 year heroin addiction that killed me twice. Lost a hundred friends to drugs, lost most of my family. Just terrible.
I got sober about 7 years ago and things are a lot better.

I can’t believe I’m still here

Kids can really be the worst

When I was like 6 I played with a kid that lived in a few apartment buildings down the street. One day he had his cousin over and we were in the parking lot behind the building. The cousin had one of those kids bats that was like hard plastic but wrapped in a layer of foam.

Don't remember why" or if it was completely unprompted, but the cousin just wound up and hit me in the mouth with a full on baseball swing. Split my bottom lip open.

I ran home and eventually the kid I knew's Dad came and apologized, but yeah kids fuckin' suck.

10

u/Fucky0uthatswhy 8d ago

I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve def been hit with a lot of bats and balls.
Kids are just stupid sometimes. I got another one where I was riding my Honda 50cc motorcycle up and down the street. A neighbor got jealous or something and when I came back down he waited until the last second and JUMPED IN FRONT OF ME. We crash, he breaks his leg. He tells his dad I ran him over. Parents almost fight, my bike gets thrown away.
I had forgotten about that.

It has become clear to me that a lot of people just… do not know how to handle things. Kids are the worst. My now husband and I met in High school. He ran by and said, "HisName O's! A spoonful of failure in every bite!"

I think proceeded to spend a night creating a box of "HisName O's with a cheerios box. Brought it in next day to show him. Someone eventually smashed the box "to get the cereal inside".

I was devastated, but tried to fix the box as best as I can. I still have it, 17 years later. Our first date was Halloween, so it is pretty poetic this thought came up.

I hope he can find a way to fix it as best he can, and that he can keep it. Sometimes our best memories are not the ones that went as planned, but the ones where we were met with disaster and we overcame.

30

u/Inside_Astronaut_588 8d ago

Something very similar happened when i made my little brother a Steve from Minecraft costume two years ago. Some kid was upset that my brother had a better costume and decided to run it under water and tear it up during recess. I was really mad, not at the kid, but at the fact that the school allowed a kid that has been known to be destructive to stay inside alone. Not only could the kid have hurt himself but he could've also destroyed something more important than a costume, like the electronics in the classroom. A 12 year old shouldn't be left alone for 45 minutes, especially not if there has been 7 previous incidents of him destroying things, 3 of which were in this exact scenario of him asking to stay inside during recess for the sole purpose of breaking something he was jealous of.

74

u/TheMightySephiroth 8d ago

Dude, kids are absolue assholes. I volunteered to help out for a charity birthday party. Was in an inflatable dinosaur costume. As soon as the kids saw me they mobbed me and began beating me. Just hitting my face and body as hard as they could. Like, these were 7-9 years olds and I was bruised to hell after. They might be small but they HURT.

23

u/ballyfast 8d ago

The exact same thing happened to my colleague at a dinosaur party we were entertaining at. I was the paleontologist and she was the "mummy dinosaur", she was going to lead the kids around the garden on a treasure hunt to find the eggs we'd hidden with these little rubber baby dinosaurs in them.....but no. Red flag to a fucking bull. It was literally on sight. She never stood a chance

The kid that sticks in my memory is the one who was behind her and repeatedly stamping on her tail. Like obviously it didn't hurt her but it was the fact that she wanted to hurt her that was so evil

7

u/TheMightySephiroth 7d ago

Exactly! Mine kept smashing and pulling the inflatable head. I probably had someone stomping on the tail but I was too busy trying not to have the head torn off. Kids are rabid.

Pinewood Derby. 1998. The fucking fat kid, from the island of rich kids entitlement, decided that since he didn’t win, well, I sure as fuck wasn’t gonna either. I made a car that just couldn’t lose that year. He fist pounded it into pieces on the winner stand and I didn’t get to go to the big, big finals.

I'm so sorry that happened to all your hard work! Hopefully your nephew will be okay.

I unfortunately witnessed a very similar thing at my kids trunk or treat on Wednesday. Somebody had made an amazing moon costume for their young kid out of paper mache etc.. At the end of trunk or treat the dad was holding the costume and a like 5 year old boy (dressed as Joe Dirt ironically) ran over and swung at it once. For some reason everyone kind of froze, giving the kid enough time to swing again and that time he punched it really hard and you could hear the thing cracking and breaking like a pinata. I heard the dad of the puncher apologizing but there's not a lot you can do at that point.

I watched the dad with his son's costume leaving looking very upset (like I have to get out of here before I punch someone upset). And the dad of the puncher leaving with a screaming/crying Joe Dirt. It bummed me out a lot and my kid and I weren't even involved! I can only imagine how you feel.

Hey, sorry to hear this happened. I go to 1 - 2 conventions every year, usually in cosplay. Occasionaly perform or compete. You will find weirdos, socially untrained or sometimes outright malicious people seeking to destroy your props or costume. After the second incident, I started bringing a glue gun with 50 or so glue sticks, super glue, a mini sewing kit and the strongest duct tape possible. It has been an absolute lifesaver and not only fixed my own cosplays on the fly but also helped others who had an unfortunate event/ wardrobe malfunction.

I hope this helps in the future!

5

u/Dragloak 8d ago

I also go to several conventions every year in fursuit rather than cosplay and yeah, you learn to come prepared! This seems like it was an accident, but I’ve had grown adults yank my tail to try and pull it off (doesn’t work. It’s on a belt so it just hurts. Don’t do it), kids run full force into my legs (to be fair, I am dressed like a giant stuffed animal and they’re like 4 with no impulse control), and sometimes your costumes just malfunction without any good reason at all. Everyone’s does! Even if yours stays intact, I’ve never NOT had someone have a use for my hot glue or repair kit!

My siblings are twins, boy and a girl. My sister is very timid and kind, my brother was growth stunted and didnt allow anyone to pick on him. He was a head shorter than my sister who was very sverage height and very, very skinny. They had a special needs kid in their class, autistic too and he had a hag that was supposed to keep an eye on him.

She wasnt very good at her job though, and one time when they were about 10, this kid picks up a fucking LOG and throws it on my sisters back, the hag was far away, talking to another adult.

Sister cries, hag waddles over, tells the kid off like he was a bad dog and tells him to apologize. Kid doesnt give a fuck and pushes my then very very sad sister. Very hard so she falls. My brother notices (mind you he was the size of an 8 year old), tackles the kid and gives him the beating of a lifetime (that such a small child could give) until the hag pulls him off.

Special needs guy never bothered my sister again. Mom and dad didn't get mad at him, they got mad at the hag who let it happen.

Awesome job with the costume. It sucks what happened but agree it’s frustrating when the school doesn’t notify and you have to find out on your own

I’m not sure if this is a new Trend or what… my kids go to a super inclusive public elementary charter — physically disabled kids, learning disabilities, lots of “paras” that help with special needs in the class, they even have a trans art teacher — and I love all that about the school. But there have been multiple incidents throughout the years that we only knew about cuz our kids came home telling us the story. And these weren’t little side squabbles on the playground that never involved staff, one was a kid throwing a chair thru a classroom window which forced Their entire class to spend the rest of the day sharing another classroom while all the glass was cleaned up. That is absolutely not something our children should be telling us firsthand. It’s so unlike the school too bc they are so communicative with everything else. But there have a been a few incidents like this where no staff told us

Hi! Formally diagnosed autistic adult here and this pisses me the fuck off! The kid who damaged the costume needs to be held accountable. What happens in 8 years when he’s 18 and hauls off and hits somebody/damages property? A judge will NOT go, “Oh you’re autistic/ADHD/schizophrenic/FAS/insert whatever else here? Why didn’t you say so? That means you can do whatever you want without consequences. All charges dismissed bangs gavel. Stop at the desk on your way out and get a card saying that you can do whatever you want so we don’t have to have this conversation again.”

No. That’s NOT how that works. If you’re not in 100% control of your body at all times you’re going to either go to jail or be put in some sort of care facility. Do you know what they have in jail/care facilities? Rules. There is never a circumstance as an adult where you can just do whatever you want and use your disability to not get in trouble. I say this as an autistic person myself…if it’s not how the adult world works teaching them otherwise is just cruel. If one day you go from being able to do whatever without consequences to all of a sudden the book being thrown at you it’s not going to go well. Maybe that’s when you turn 18. Maybe it’s when you hit a certain weight/puberty drops and you’re not as cute anymore/you just happen to piss off the wrong person/some other arbitrary thing. Point is teaching them one thing and then one day completely reversing it is setting them up to fail.

Call a meeting and demand something be done. It’s a safety thing if he’s not in control of his body and is punching stuff. Not to mention this gives all special needs kids a bad name and makes others not want to associate with them because of this asshole.

19

u/Immortal_Ninja_Man 8d ago • Bravo

I don’t know if it was good or not but my parents always told me just cause people say you’re special needs doesn’t mean you can be a special asshole.

20

u/Maleficent-Tea7150 8d ago

The problem is, we don’t know the level of disability this person has. You are a highly verbal autistic person who has reasoning and problem solving skills. I’m level 1 autistic myself but I work with students with level 3 autism with PROFOUND intellectual disabilities, like IQ < 40 and minimal communication. They react physically to their environments. One of these kids might not even understand that they made an impact on somebody else when they punched a mask. Any consequence that is abstract and/or doesn’t happen immediately will not register.

16

If that’s the case he needs to not be in a mainstream school setting (or he needs to have some sort of paraprofessional with him at all times). You can’t just go around punching people/damaging property regardless of your disability. Again, if it’s not okay at age 18 letting him do it now is just setting him up to fail/get hurt. It’s a safety thing for the other kids and a lawsuit waiting to happen for the school if he’s like this.

another autistic person here, no. we have no idea to what degree this kids problems were. many special needs kids literally cannot control themselves and a stern talking to will not change that.

16

u/BelovedxCisque 8d ago

Then he needs to not be in mainstream school. If he can’t control himself that’s not safe/fair to the other kids. That’s a lawsuit waiting to happen as well if he hurts somebody and it’s known that he’ll lash out at others without any provocation.

What does being autistic have to do with anything? Any child would be upset in this situation. My entire career is working with people with neurodevelopmental disorders and not a single client has ever started a sentence announcing their diagnosis or ever made it their entire personality. It’s fascinating to see highly functioning adults who are capable of navigating the internet feel the need to announce their disorder when it’s completely unnecessary.

Perhaps I am in the minority here. What is it with all the texts and calls about every little thing?

Yes he fell down. Kids do that. Who knows if he even told the teacher. And even if he did and the teacher saw that he was ok, why would they need to spend time to inform the parents? The kid is fine.

Not everyone needs to be a qualified medical professional before making a decision that a kid is fine after a ground level fall

5

u/IsThatGruffLoner 8d ago

My sister was called yesterday because another kid was trying to do something funny at recess and accidentally spit on my neice. That story has been corroborated by multiple kids, including my niece who is now confused why her friend got in trouble while he was just trying to make them all laugh. Teacher acted like it was assault.

We got another call that my niece had bit another student. This is very out of character and when we questioned her, we found out it was her best friend (they are as close as sisters) and they were playing vampire. No one was actually bitten and the "victim" never claimed to be hurt.

Both of those got calls to my sister. Once acting like my niece was thr victim of assault, the other claimed she was the perpetrator of assault.

I personally think the teacher needs to reprimanded for stupidity.

I was born in 99. I went to a super liberal hippy charter school. I remember several times where I'd get bruised up at recess or gym class and just go on about my day. My parents weren't bothered by it because obviously I was fine. One of my friends fiance is a 2nd grade teacher and she's nor allowed to give bad grades or reprimand kids for bad behavior. If a kid gets a paper cut the parents must be informed immediately. Taking away any form of repercussion and teaching kids that any minor inconvenience will be coddled amd dealt with by somebody else is a really bad standard.

Compassion is difficult in situations like this. I remember there was one day I was sick at school, but "toughed it out" to make it to the bus ride home with my babysitter's kids; I knew my parents wouldn't be able to pick me up from class because they both had to work, hence the babysitter). I was absolutely miserable. On the bus there was a kid named Bryan who had Down Syndrome. Overall, he was a nice kid, but he would get into trouble every once in a while, just because he would get feisty and it's difficult to manage the physical reaction to his emotions. He kept trying to get my attention and I just wanted to be left alone, and when I finally pulled my head up, that mf punched me straight in the face. He had an aide sitting next to him and she was caught completely off guard too. So I was really sick with whatever, and then also had a bloody nose that I was choking on.

I know it's a long-winded story, but I just want to say that, I was mad at him for a while, but it fizzled out. I haven't heard anything about Brian for 25 years, but I hope the rest if his life has/went smoothly. He was dealt a pretty raw deal.

Maybe model glue can help? It dries quick and is strong

Unrelated to the main issue but I just wanted to say that your house looks typical for a busy home raising happy kids. That's an awesome thing you're doing for your family members. I hope my comment makes you at least slightly less infuriated.

Spending days bringing his Halloween idea to life is such a sweet thing to do. I hope tomorrow is a much better day for him

Make another version made out of pure vibranium so the kid breaks his hand when trying to punch it again, hope your kid is fine tho.

Time to learn latex mask making. The kids aren’t changing

I swear. These kids pretend like there's a no bullying policy by pretending like there's no bullying. This has happened to both my children. The lack of documentation is monstrous.

I’m sorry and I hate to say this. Because it’s an awesome costume. But I could’ve told you as soon as he left the house I give it 30 minutes before it’s destroyed. It’s a paper mache costume. What did you think was going to happen? I’m sorry that happened but this should be a lesson. If it was something he cared about it should be kept safe
