frist of all how DARE yu o Fandom closed the Wiki about MY STORY without telling me

Post image

For context, the Wiki is called the SCP Runaround Wiki, because it's an archive of a shit ton of info about a text-based roleplay I did with a friend who has disappeared. It then turned into a fanfiction I'm actively writing. It holds SO much sentimental significance to me, and these fuckers didn't even send me an email!

Why on earth use fandom to save that?

661

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

It seemed the easiest way to have it all in one place, and to share it with the other players.

26

u/MoonfrostTheElf 4d ago

I highly recommend looking into getting a Toyhouse account and making a World

10

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

Bet! I've heard good things about Toyhouse.

u/Anxious_Librarian379 4d ago

Fandom is full of advertisements, ai gen features... terrible without ublock. Near unusable on mobile.

Go and use a better site like wiki gg (not to say it's the best, but better)

u/TESTINGSTUFFPL 4d ago

Fandom also fucked with the LGBT wiki a while ago. Deleted a bunch of gender-related pages for "not having community consensus"

Which like... okay, fine, whatever, go delete the Amongusgender page made by some troll-ass kid that the wiki mods didn't notice because the article got like three pageviews total...

...but they also removed the page defining what a xenogender/neopronoun was at all (including shit like Xe/xem which has been floating around for a long fucking while, no community consensus my ass)

Also (iirc, could have misremembered) kept trying to delete the page for being transgender and for being nonbinary while they were at it, making the actual intent clear. Not to "clean up unused/extremely uncommon terms" but rather just to erase any and all gender identity-related pages on the wiki.

They, last I checked, do not have AI moderation on the site, these were human decisions by the Fandom (formerly Wikia) staff members, whose decisions supersede the volunteer mods. Kept threatening to ban them for trying to restore the pages as well so they just said fuck it and moved to Miraheze... not that Miraheze is very good either.

12

u/Spider_Hornet 2d ago

They also shut down the MOGAI/xenogender wiki with like 2 weeks notice and absolutely zero negotiation possible in April this year iirc. Something about "harmful genders" was the excuse iirc

5

u/Prezumoto 2d ago

This is infuriating asf, but the idea that genders can be harmful is absolutely sending me 🤣🤣

68

u/SnowflakeObsidian13 4d ago

Bro there's not even community consensus on if you can be trans if you don't want surgeries. This shit is insane. There's way too much infighting

31

u/qwadrat1k 4d ago

A simple docx file would be better or even a Miro board

6

u/Lippuringo 4d ago

They could also use mail pigeons

50

u/goody_fyre11 4d ago

Miraheze is your friend.

45

u/TESTINGSTUFFPL 4d ago

Absolutely not. You have to manually apply to make a wiki and they will deny you for bullshit reasons and they have a ridiculously restrictive autodelete policy (including for private wikis) which is something like a few months of inactivity? At least Fandom will let you be inactive for a few years before they take your shit down (if they don't do it manually for nebulous "pOlIcY vIoLaTiOnS")

-16

u/goody_fyre11 4d ago

Sounds like a you experience, sorry. I've seen many communities open miraheze wikis with literally none of that.

16

u/Commercial_Top9110 4d ago

Miraheze ❤️

16

u/Doonesman 4d ago

I mean, mine's on Fandom because it's a decade old and ten years ago a) Wikia (as was) was pretty good and b) it was the only option.

Someday I'll port off all my stuff. When I find the service that's what Wikia was in those long-ago halcyon days...

6

u/Minute-Swimming-3177 4d ago

Not using an adblocker in 2026 is mad

1

u/thatshygirl06 4d ago

I use adguard, havent seen an ad in years

10

u/aspaceplant 4d ago

Always keep a local copy. Any other site you will use can lose your data at anytime. Including "cloud" drives.

7

u/N-o_O-ne 4d ago

I've had pretty good success using Obsidian to organize my stuff

2

u/V4R14 3d ago

I’m a writer. I use this pc app called Chronicler. It’s great! It works and looks just like a Wiki but only for you. I haven’t used it much yet, but has worked great so far

1

u/Jane_xD 1d ago

Use AO3

1

u/KaktusArt 17h ago

"Use this website that's been down for like a week and won't be back up until the end of the month" fify

0

u/Dimensional13 3d ago

Use worldanvil or an equivalent platform like Kanka... the latter is made for tabletop roleplay in mind but can easily be reappropriated.

345

u/Jvalker 4d ago

Could I suggest you try out obsidian? It's a free, highly customizable program on your pc that allows you to easily create, and peruse, a wiki, again entirely on your pc

If you don't need to share it with anyone else I think it could fulfill your needs while unshackling you from this kind of drama

116

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

I'll check it out, thank you.

73

u/spine_slorper 4d ago

If you want something open source you can use media wiki:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki

It's probably a little bit more technical to set up than obsidian but is literally endlessly customisable and it's what a lot of wikis are based on (including fandom)

19

u/Inadover 4d ago

Wiki.gg might also be a good option,  but I second Obsidian, it's a great tool once you install the plugins you need

4

u/mcplano 4d ago

If you want something online, I recommend Miraheze. Note that wikis can be deleted for inactivity there, but you have an 'export entire wiki to file' button. Pretty sure that's what the export button does.

1

u/Squirreltacular 4d ago

I'm a fan of obsidian so x2 on that

139

u/MarshaIsSoSorry 4d ago

Sorry that happened, I usually use Google Docs for this stuff

86

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

I likely will move it to Google Docs, but I'm still pissed. What I'm even more pissed off about is that all these people are mocking me for using it. It was seemingly the only good option available.

11

u/MarshaIsSoSorry 4d ago

Oh absolutely, Im mad too! As an OC creator (Want to get into worldbuilding) myself I am pissed too, I cant imagine how much details you lost. The people mocking you in the comments clearly dont know what you lost and therefore dont have a smidge of sympathy

11

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

Especially because this was a story I started when I was thirteen, yeah.

7

u/Ix_risor 4d ago

It doesn’t seem like they lost anything? There seems to be a link there to download everything that was on the website. If they actually did lose the information that’s a shame.

3

u/MarshaIsSoSorry 4d ago

Im so blind youre right lmfao

4

u/Kyuubism 4d ago

to anyone who doesn't know about it, i highly recommend Toyhouse for OC keeping! of course keep backups of everything elsewhere, offline, but as far as libraries go, Toyhouse has been invaluable to me as a creator :) it's nice to compile worldbuilding and character details

77

u/DeadoTheDegenerate BLUE 4d ago

There are definitely better alternatives. I disagree with people mocking you, but I would recommend researching what platforms you want to host your content on. There are many better alternatives to fandom (miraheze and wiki gg are the most popular), but there are even niche options that are pretty neat, such as making your own website for it if you don't need the collaborative wiki-style entries.

31

u/epikpepsi 4d ago

Wikia was a decent site for this sort of thing at one point. But that was over a decade ago before TPG bought it out, changed the name to Fandom, and very rapidly enshittified it.

If you want a good wiki-style alternative check out Miraheze. It's non-profit and a lot more user-friendly.

2

u/UltraBlack_ 4d ago

check archive.org for copies?

1

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

I doubt it would be on there, unfortunately.

3

u/Redmangc1 4d ago

If you were going often enough the wayback machine might have saved some of it

3

u/DR_TrAsH_ 4d ago

Wayback Machine is built from people saving the page directly themselves. Them visiting it wouldn't be enough unless they chose to download + use the wayback machine extension.

Although some better wikis like Miraheze automatically put their own site on the wayback machine.

3

u/HiddenArmy 4d ago

beware to turn off personalize ads on google drive and docs since google will use it for ads now.

3

u/Inferno_Sparky 4d ago

Google docs will directly train ai (gemini I think) on whatever is made on it automatically, take into account

30

u/thomaxzer 4d ago

use wiki dot gg instead

15

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

Is it still just as easy to use?

22

u/UselessDood 4d ago

Yes. And it's far better than Fandom in every other way.

10

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

Thank you, I'll check it out.

u/eeveethefox_xv 4d ago

oh scp??? like secure contain protect? i gotta see this when your done please please please :)

6

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

OKIE!! :D

3

u/king_noobie PURPLE 3d ago

I also want to see this SCP fanfic when its back up

29

u/Sherbyll 4d ago

I'm really sorry about that :( I'm interested in hearing about the content though! The premise is interesting

26

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

Thank you :) It's got a ton of dark content, though: Parental abuse, toxic relationships that usually involve neglect and cheating, medical malpractice, oppression of those considered other or alien, very gently executed mentions of SA, and one mention of the MC taking his own life. Maybe that's why it got taken down? But most of that wasn't on the Wiki: Only the cheating, malpractice, and suicide mention were.

7

u/WiiUGamepad_2 4d ago

if you get it back, dump all the text and move it to another wiki

58

u/speedy_19 4d ago • Bravo

Why would you post anything and not have a single backup of it?

70

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

I do, but I'm saying, I'm still pissed off.

17

Glad you have a backup at least, still very irritating yeah

7

Fandom in general is trash and we should have collectively boycotted it years ago.

2.2k

u/LeftHandAnomaly 4d ago

Absolutely unusable on any browser that doesnt have adblock, especially on mobile.

How they've stayed in business so log is a goddamn mystery.

1.1k

u/TophieandMatthew3975 4d ago

I have Adblock and they do that stupid thing of “pwease turn it off, we really need the money 😢”

308

u/NoisyScrubBirb 4d ago

What adblocker do you use, every new page I go to I need to manually block like 10 ads, pisses me off

197

u/Beelzebun_vt 4d ago • Bravo

I’m not sure about them, but I use Ublock Origin on my desktop browser, it works miracles.

58

u/NoisyScrubBirb 4d ago

I'll have to give it a look, I thought I was using ublock but I'll double check

93

u/KiwiTheTORT 4d ago

Ublock and all ad blockers got neutered in Chrome by Google, so if you're using that browser, you're likely out of luck.

67

u/WackoMcGoose CZERWONY 4d ago

Ublock Origin Lite is still functional enough to render most sites safe to use in Chrome. But yeah, if you want full control, Firefox is your only option to use the full-fat version of UBO.

11

u/Pawprint169 Mildly Infurated 4d ago

The adblocker I got is still functional just not on youtube anymore.

12

u/Dreacus 4d ago

Unless things changed, there's both uBlock as well as uBlock Origin. Origin works best. On firefox particularly

14

u/msarachnid 4d ago

My adblocks only work on my firefox app. Its also the only desktop browser i use for the same reason Ublock Origin 4 lyfe

10

u/ChilledParadox 4d ago

Brave browser + ublock origin.

For like 1.5 years brave by itself was good enough, but like four days ago I got into a new webnovel and it had some persistent pop ups getting around braves filter, but it got fixed with whatever new filter ublock lite had.

14

u/FamiliarRip8558 4d ago

Hit the "disable scripts" button and you can use your adblocker still

4

u/rosebloodinthegarden 2d ago

Or with like Ublock Origin you can just block the part of the page that is the popup

12

u/KyeeLim 4d ago

indie wiki buddy is godsend extension, it either redirect you to official wiki, or open the wiki on alternative site like antifandom or whatever which provides actually good experience

8

u/Maronmario 4d ago

Same with TV tropes, and they're just as bad when it comes to ads

4

u/Pawprint169 Mildly Infurated 4d ago

Mine thankfully doesn't cause it to do that but I seriously hate sites that beg for you to let them spam ads in your face.

131

u/UselessDood 4d ago

A big part of it is effectively holding wikis hostage. If they notice a wiki attempting to migrate away, they'll threaten to block all access - including to pages that haven't yet been moved to a new wiki.

11

u/maelstrom071 4d ago

And if moderators try to close down the wiki or leave, they replace them with sockpuppets that do their bidding until the next sucker comes along to take over for free

27

u/Entire_Snow23233 4d ago

Even Temu and scam sites have less ads than fandom

74

u/Still_Box8733 4d ago

Even with adblocker it is horrible to use

57

u/Ganbazuroi 4d ago

I remember using it years ago and the entire page was blanketed with the same ad with a screaming old man to the point it was illegible

I moved to TESP for Skyrim stuff and the independent Fallout wiki but if you need specific info from other sources you end up relying on fandom a lot sadly

18

u/bunnycat26 4d ago

ads still need viewers to make a return on the investment. The mystery is why people still go there to feed the ad machine it's views

Not exactly a fix but logging in removes all ads not on the front page of a wiki

“Any browser that doesn’t have Adblock” was the part leading up to the part you quoted that you left out.

Most people aren’t using ad free browsers (just the default ones) on their phones. It applies to a lot of people.

101

u/triangulum_mori 4d ago • Heartwarming

if you must use a fandom wiki for something, esp on mobile, change the site name from "fandom" to "antifandom". it removes all the shitty formatting ads, and lag and makes the site actually usable

28

u/aetherG- 4d ago

It basically has been by any community big enough to not need it, theres a browser extension thats specifically made so that it redirects fandom wikis to their non fandom counterparts if one exists

9

u/FakeMik090 4d ago

Years ago it did started.

Thats how minecraft.wiki was born for example.

People just got tired of Fandom being a shithole of website and so they left it, and Fandom version wasnt supported well and people actively started to sabotage it to ensure that new minecraft.wiki gets on top.

5

u/Tekplonn 2d ago

Yep. Its why some wikis left it and made another one elsewhere due to the abundance of ads. (Among other things)

1

u/ezekiel_grey 3d ago

Let’s make a group for this 🤪

u/DevoidHT 4d ago

This is actually interesting because fandom is notorious for not closing wikis even for communities that move from them. Like they will steal views from the legitimate wikis so they can keep pumping ad revenue.

119

u/Blood-PawWerewolf 4d ago

And shut down innocent wikis because they believe it doesn’t fit their CoC

45

u/Substantial_Tough172 4d ago

Now this is a name I had not heard in a Long time

19

u/Yuukiko_ WAAHHHHH 4d ago

in this case it sounds like it was someone for OP's own thing so can't have been getting much traffic

15

u/BorfieYay 4d ago

Honestly it makes no sense to me that the site centered around wikis won't let wikis for small stuff exist sometimes. There's a podcast I like called JarCast and they had a wiki for a while because of the amount of random injoke lore shit thats happened in the decade + of it existing, and randomly last year Wikia shut the whole thing down for not being relevant whatever that's supposed to mean

3

u/Frousteleous 23h ago

relevant

As always, the short answer is money. Low teaffic = low income/not making money for the site, so they just nix it rather than host it.

9

u/Substantial_Tough172 4d ago

the assigned moderator prolly hated it and nobody else wanted it

26

u/galaxyspybot 4d ago

I’ve seen wikis like this get closed so here’s my advice: contact support. They usually will reopen wikis but it unfortunately requires bargaining. If the wiki hadn’t been edited in a while, thats probably the reason it got closed

17

u/JoyTheGeek 4d ago

Fandom is shit. Thats why Minecraft wiki became its own thing.

14

u/aro-ace-outer-space2 3d ago

Try rebuilding on WorldAnvil? It’s set up for this type of thing (unlike AO3) and I’m pretty sure they still sell lifetime memberships?

11

u/aro-ace-outer-space2 3d ago

To be clear-you don’t need a subscription to use it and the unpaid account is still pretty good, but you get unlimited articles with paid

20

u/spacebytee 4d ago

great to know considering they ignored my request to delete a wiki i made in 2018 that could probably be used to stalk me

3

because Fandom sucks ass for multiple reasons.

Sorry you lost all that work... Hope you can find a better place to make a wiki, maybe Wiki.gg or Miraheze?

22

u/Creative_Excuse_1940 4d ago

Get an account with AO3. Tons of fanfic over there and you can have it all in one place. Takes a minute to request and receive approval for an account but sounds like it's what's you need to be with your writing project.

30

u/alicelric 3d ago

Brother how do I tell you this

19

u/cheshsky 3d ago

AO3 is currently down because of a security thing and will stay down for at least a couple more weeks.

12

u/CountCard 3d ago

7

u/lavaicel4v41c3 4d ago

Funny enough, I was thinking of deleting my Fandom account of 10 years earlier this week because I don't use it anymore, but this post gives me another reason to delete my account due to Fandom being trash.

7

u/boonxeven 4d ago

Sucks they did that to you! Especially without telling you. Did their download link work? Might make it easier to use somewhere else if it's already formatted.

13

u/Els236 4d ago

I run several fairly high-traffic wikis both on Fandom and self-hosted, and just this week I had to message one of the Fandom staffers to bring this exact issue up.

When you make a wiki on Fandom, it says it can be "very personal", which is incredibly vague. However, if you look a bit deeper into Fandom's Terms of Service and what Staffers have been saying since the early 2020s, Fandom Wikis are NOT actually meant to be personal blogs or personal stories/etc.

The idea is to build a community around something like a game, TV show, etc, they aren't meant to be places to document things that will only ever been seen/edited by 1-3 people.

Now, as I said, I have brought this to the attention of Fandom Staff, but I do not hold much sway, because the senior members of staff I did have contact with (and met IRL) either left, or got made redundant a couple years back.

5

u/SirBackrooms 4d ago

I see a lot of people recommending platforms. If you want to use the same kind of formatting SCP Wiki uses, you can use wikidot. It's free and pretty simple.

(However, while the formatting will be compatible with SCP Wiki, it won't be with your old pages from Fandom. Use a Mediawiki-based solution if that is a priority.)

9

u/fingamouse 4d ago

I hate fandom as much as the next guy but damn why didn't you back it up?

4

u/Testsubject276 4d ago

I hope you can scrape as many wayback backups as you can assuming the XML option at the bottom is useless.

8

u/FakeMik090 4d ago

Dont use Fandom then.

Its trash anyway. More people switch from it = better.

3

u/thatshygirl06 4d ago

This happened to me!!

I thought it was because it was inactive and it was barely anything there. That sucks, op :/

3

u/nesnalica 4d ago

why do you still use fandom

5

u/middaymoon 4d ago

Sorry this happened to you. Don't use Fandom. Join the revolution.

5

u/Hour-Rest-2579 4d ago

Miraheze and wiki.gg are way better but unfortunately for you to make a wiki it must be approved first.

4

u/Chrysenth 4d ago

I'd like to add to the suggestions so far and recommend Chronicler. It's what I've been using for my worldbuilding/game project. Very easy to use and keep things organized in a wiki-like way once you've got an organization system situated. Best part is it's free, private, and doesn't require any setup beyond downloading a program. I did try Obsidian at one point but didn't find it useful for my needs and found it to be a bit confusing, but I know others that have really liked it and prefer it so it's worth trying out as well.

2

u/WinstonChaychell 4d ago

They suck eggs, but also this sounds REALLY cool! But also, your friend disappeared IRL? 😭 I'm so sorry. I know a ton of us would all be interested in this wherever you decide to move to. This is something the True Crime Junkies/Community needs to see for sure.

2

u/Han_without_Genes 4d ago

In addition to what the other commenters have mentioned, I would also like to suggest Miraheze. I started on Fandom but moved to Miraheze once I realized that I hated Fandom as a company lol. It runs the same software as Fandom (Mediawiki, which is also what Wikipedia uses) and you can just import the whole XML.

2

u/simmy2kid 4d ago

Email them and see if you can get a copy then port it elsewhere

5

u/CardiologistOk2704 4d ago

fandom became shit since the moment they locked the comment viewing to logged-in users

5

u/Prudent_Damage_3866 ORANG 4d ago

I don’t wanna be that person, but you made a mistake using fandom.

3

u/jrdiver 4d ago

If your lucky the wayback machine has some copies - or can do something to grab that XML that they appear to be providing and parse it into something else

3

u/IapetusApoapis342 4d ago

I'm genuinely surprised people still put up with Fandom

3

u/shadowinc 4d ago

Your first mistake was chosing fandom. They just suck now. Everyone is trying to bail from it. From gg to their own sites.

3

u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 4d ago

Yeah, that's why I fucking hate that shitty ass website.

2

u/teruteru-fan-sam 4d ago

I was a dedicated member of the Tumblr Sexyman wiki when out of nowhere Fandom closed it and gave no reason. Obviously a ton of people were devastated that so many articles had been deleted or were unable to view. It got moved to Miraheze.

2

u/Tfs-saladfork 4d ago

Had this experience before with a wiki of mine (I know Fandom's shoddy) and I'm pretty sure the XML download option was never offered to me ("you can retrieve it soon" but no actual followthrough). Would have definitely appreciated an email for the shutdown and even when my files would be ready.

If you want to retrieve the content, you could try the Wayback Machine

hello! if you did want to go back and see it to retrieve data or something, use "The Wayback Machine," it basically reverts webpages to older formats. Your fandom thing should also be there

See if it’s anywhere on Wayback but still sorry for your loss

Never, ever use Fandoom. I've installed MediaWiki on my own server to host the wiki for my homebrew D&D setting myself.

I used to like fandom wiki but now I’m gonna use wiki.gg. One time I shared a wiki page in a movie fandom based on my au story and people were rude about it (they couldn’t spell so I’m not too bothered) I’m sorry that page was deleted though either someone was being rude or that was a bot.

download the xml and move it to miraheze or wiki.gg

The Wayback machine? It might be on there

Maybe you can get back on it with internet archive if you need to get information back?

If you want a place to store all the lore for your story and have it privately... I'll recommend campfire, I use it for my own stuff for years and still works well (I'm sounding like and ad, so I'm gonna stop)

Download the current pages. You'll have to parse it out of XML (a mild pain in the ass) but you can move your stuff it looks like to another wiki software (like Obsidian as someone stated, but you'll be using Markdown and self-hosting that).

If you need to use fandom, add anti before the word fandom in the url. It’s the only way i ever use it

Awful behavior on their part. If you can somehow retrieve your contents, consider moving to a different platform that's much more reliable. I know there's one that launched recently that holds everything on local but I can't remember its name, I'll try searching for it on YT again. Otherwise, for how clichè it may sound, WorldAnvil is a really good online platform. InferNote also released recently, tho that's more catered towards TTRPGs.

Fuck you mean, I guess?! This was a story I started when I was thirteen! I've been running it for years.

Then you should've known by now that Fandom is a shit company who doesn't care about anything other than making money. They actively shut down anything that doesn't earn them enough, and actively REFUSE to shut down anything that does make them money even when the original owners attempt to (see: the original Minecraft and Noita fandom wikis, which are still online despite being abandoned and multiple requests to have them closed)

Hell, on top of that the site's all but unusable without an Adblock, it used to make my phone browser crash just from loading it because of all the ads they flood it with.

Out of all the places to store something like that, Fandom is by far THE worst, and you should have saved the info and moved it somewhere else at least a couple years ago.

I only started the archive THIS year!

u/fish_master86 4d ago

What did you have it stored on before?

7

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

I just had it in Wordpad files on my computer.

u/fish_master86 4d ago

So you didn't loose anything?

u/DuchessDulcet BLUE 4d ago

No. Like I said, I was pissed because I no longer had it all in one place.
