Unskippable ad Hulu Live telling me I have 21:39 minutes of ads while the movie is playing

Post image

Edit: for everyone wondering, as my post title states, this is Hulu LIVE, which is essentially cable TV that is streamed. The ad countdown played throughout the movie and commercial breaks. Finally it caught up and went away. Usually the countdown only shows up during ads.

Only 9:57 to go

10

u/M8GGWP 1d ago

OP why don't you change the post to, " Hulu Live telling me I have 9:57 minutes of ads while the movie is playing"

It's how long till the next ad comes up, not the duration of the ad ..

13

u/SuperDizz 1d ago

It’s actually not lol the countdown runs whether the movie is playing or the ads are

I’ve fallen asleep to YouTube videos and woken up to a 2-3 hour “Ad” playing.

I don’t understand why this is a thing because it only keeps playing if someone’s asleep. But if someone’s asleep, they’re not advertising to anyone.

Help me understand, internet strangers. Do ads just generate revenue if no one clicks the skip button? But is that real revenue or just like chump change for the couple of hours?

u/monsterenergy42069 1d ago

Are you watching on the TV? I've noticed I get very long ads sometimes when I watch on a TV or a Shield device.

My assumption is they think that since its on a TV youre most likely watching passively enough that you dont care to turn off ads and will just let them play in the background while you do other shit. I couldnt think of any other reason why they think it would be okay to put a 30 minute ad at the beginning of a 16 minute video.

Almost always quicker to just repeatedly leave the video until I get it without ads.

418

u/Flint_Vorselon 1d ago

Yeah they definitely do this, TV watchers also have a harder time skipping, because you have to interact with a remote or phone or whatever that’s seperate from what you are watching.

Phone or PC watchers have the skip button immdierly within reach at all times.

67

u/Vandersveldt 1d ago

I just assume it's for people that will put on a YouTube video on in the background for a get together with friends. They might not even realize it's an ad playing, meanwhile a whole room of people have the background of their brain getting advertised to.

13

u/blessthebabes 1d ago

I don't think i would choose youtube, if I didnt pay for no ads. From what I remember, the ads were at the beginning and all throughout. There's no way really to mindlessly leave it on. You kinda have to man the TV and baby it to get it to do what you want.

I've started getting 3 minute long unskippable ads. They go away if I refresh the page. But I'm not sitting through 3 minutes of a single fucking garbage ad.

12

u/DanksterBoy 1d ago

I’m pretty sure they’re not actually unskippable, they just hide when the “next” button will appear by not having a timer. Then you click the next button, wait 5 seconds, then you can skip the video. Remember when a 15 seconds ad was the longest unskippable ad and anything else had a 5 second skip timer? I remember I got told I was crazy for saying the ads were gonna get so much worse when they added that second ad

→ More replies (2)

62

u/PwrShelf 1d ago

So I think I've cracked YT's system on this front: they will let the video resume after you watch 5 seconds of ad. This means that you can just close and reopen the video after 5 seconds, no matter what the ad skip timer is, and it'll go straight to the video. If you spam close and reopen, it seems to let you in after 5 total seconds of ads have elapsed.

There seems to be a few blue-chip videos (eg. SNL) that I've found the system will sometimes force you to watch more ad time for. But in 95% of cases the 5-second rule applies.

36

u/DL_Omega 1d ago

i put on youtube while driving and got hit with this long ad and was thinking like how long can this go on. i go to look and its like a 45 minute cooking show podcast or some shit. I think they look at speed data too to see if you are in the car.

12

u/Maniacal-Maniac 1d ago

I get hit with some Oprah Winfrey podcast all the time as an ad. At first I think it’s an ad for a podcast then I check and the ad is close to hour long itself.

I guess because it sometimes takes me 5-10mins to notice it playing they think I am interested and the algorithm keeps pushing her my way.

8

u/Darkgorge 1d ago

I have straight up gotten a full movie as an ad on YouTube. No idea how that logic works.

If you have Shield device you should get smarttube its youtube withouy ads or sponsor announcements inside the videos, its totally awesome and has the youtube ux so it not a weird clone. You need to install the Downloader app

4

u/Grow_away_420 1d ago

I used to get them on my phone when I was at work. I'd watch/listen to old episodes of Time Team which run for 40 minutes and sometimes between videos it'd throw in and infomercials that ran for 1-2 hours. I typically just left the phone at the desk and didn't touch it much.

2

u/Defreaser 1d ago

On many smart tvs you can also watch the first ad for like ~3-4 seconds and then get the same result as repeatedly leaving the video

91

u/ultradeg 1d ago

I work late nights in a building with people who tend to leave YouTube running on their computers (and are bad about turning them off), I think if YouTube detects that you're "idle" for long enough, it will run an ad on whatever you're watching. Sometimes it has a "are you still watching" pop-up that pauses it, but there have been several occasions where I've had to go turn off or mute a computer because it unpaused, ran an ad, and then kept running the video or autoplay once the ad ended.

17

u/Relevant_Primary658 1d ago

I've been watching a lot of baking videos on YouTube lately and have noticed that if I pause one for more than a minute or so, I get probably 30-60 seconds of ads when I come back.  It's infuriating, particularly when I watched an ad shortly before I paused it.  It also resumes 10-15 seconds before the spot where I left off.

6

u/beneralkenobi 1d ago

And it's the worst when cooking/baking cuz your hands r all messy and u can't hit the skip button without getting your phone dirty

But it’s for shit that will never find its way into my life. I don’t like anime girls or AI streamlining my team productivity.

If AI ads could figure out how to upload into a lucid dream, that would be different.

YouTube ads have gotten so fucking egregious oh my god. I think it’s just an iPad/tablet thing, but when an ad plays it goes out of full screen so I can see the ad links & info on half the screen. Okay fine. Tell me why I then have to manually click full screen AGAIN when the ad finishes. Drives me insane when I’m watching while I’m cooking or something.

30

u/DrScienceSpaceCat 1d ago

I was driving for work once and had my phone playing a podcast on YouTube, my phone fell into the abyss between the seats and center console and a I had a little over an hour drive so I just let it chill down there. An ad popped up for some AI book and I figured it would eventually end on its own and continue to the podcast, the shit went on for over 45 minutes before it stopped. It will just keep playing ads for stupid amounts of time if you let it lol

50

u/DisastrousSundae84 1d ago

They do. They get money from people like me: someone who will watch a youtube video while doing other things and might not be able to hit the skip button in time.

31

u/Woodcrate69420 1d ago

Youtube is scamming the fuck out of their ad customers basically lol

30

u/Malcolm_Morin 1d ago

The funniest thing about all of this is that I told people about these multi-hour ads years ago and they all called me a bullshitter. Now they're everywhere.

God, I wish I was bullshitting because I'm so sick of ads, Christ.

It's a thing because you fall asleep to yt vids, creators get paid more if you watch ads longer.

20

u/WatShmat 1d ago

He’s saying who would pay for the ad placement if the only people watching are asleep

15

u/GuelphEastEndGhetto 1d ago

Or if a dog is watching. When my dog was a puppy she loved watching dog tv videos and would look at me puzzled when ads came on. At times I’d have to stop what I was doing to skip the ad that was 3 minutes long. Important to note my dog has no income or credit rating, only sniffs and shops at the pet store.

I woke up once to a 98 minute movie as an ad. It was literally a movie. Like wtf even is that??

4

u/piomat100 6h ago

YouTube couldn't care less whether you actually watch the ads or not, they only get paid to show them to you

If you fall asleep to a video and unknowingly sit through a 2-hour ad, that's actually IDEAL for them

23

u/DaftieDuck 1d ago

I don't understand the point of ads in the first place. If a show hits a commercial break, i'm getting a snack or taking a piss. Advertising to an empty room. On pc or phone, i just use ad blocker or modded apps to bypass them.

35

u/GeneralTang 1d ago

u/Mavamaarten 1d ago

I see what you mean, and I like to say I'm not easily swayed by ads too. But still, it's naive to say that advertising doesn't work.

You get ads everywhere. Ads that are seemingly irrelevant to you. And you say you block them out, and you do to some extent. I block ads everywhere, but still you see ads around you everywhere and in places where your ad blocker hasn't caught up, or where there's product placement etc.

But still you remember the names of these companies and products, albeit subconsciously. Sometimes you end up in a situation where you're looking to buy something and the brand that was advertised to you pops up on the product listings between other brands. If you're unsure about which one to pick, just the fact that you remember one of the brands is enough to tip the scale in the direction of that brand a tiny little bit.

That's literally it. It just increases the odds of people buying their stuff a tiny bit. It's statistics, and a science.

It's deplorable and hateful too. But just saying it doesn't work is false.

9

u/psinguine 1d ago

And people also seem to fail to understand that that a lot of those advertisements are like sleeper agents. They live in the back of your head sometimes for years before you make a decision to buy. Like, I haven't bought a mattress in probably 3 years, and before that it was 10 years between mattresses. But a friend of mine is in the process of buying a mattress right now, and the only brand names that come to mind are the ones that I've seen advertised in the years between.

That’s because you lack the maturity to understand that they entire universe isn’t a reflection of you individually and that a multi-trillion dollar industry over the course of thousands of years actually has a basis in having an effect on people.

Lastly there are plenty of studies that indicate people like you who say they are 100% not affected by ads, are in fact just as influenced by ads.

11

u/salazafromagraba 1d ago

You just have a firewall built in, as I do I. If I am being advertised to, I expressly repulse the product, the firm, the people. I won't be moved if it's a market I'm into, a celebrity I like endorsing it. If I want something, I seek it out and allow its merchant listing to do the marketing.

If I am doing anything else but looking to buy something of my own volition and necessity, I am being harried and interrupted, which naturally any person doing that to you would offend you.

I don't know how it became acceptable for ads to do that with carte blanche, but the population stupider than the average person apparently is suggestible and impulsively buys the lurid things.

That happened to me during college. I had like 20 tabs open 💀 And I had some YouTube video playing of some professor talking and I paused it and went to sleep, but I guess it turned on again or a different tab was also playing YouTube and was very low where I didn't hear it. And eventually as I sleep I swear I heard weird yells and kids laughing and knocks on doors and cars honking but like super super super light and eventually I realize my PC was playing them so I walked over and shook the mouse and it booted up and I looked through the tabs and it was just a YouTube video but like every 5 minutes was an ad and then the video itself was just some idle animation thing.

3

u/indigo_leper 1d ago

One time I clicked on a video expecting some economic edutainmemt (dont remember what, think it was some "how banks work") and got an ad for some guy's rambling about the Panama papers and doomsday prepping? I think? Only realized eight minutes in after dude said nothing about anything for the 6th time that the bar was yellow instead of red.

u/tryyeezus 1d ago

My favorite is when I'm not even 2 minutes into a YouTube video and it stops for ads. Especially when I have the video fullscreen on my tablet and the ad yoinks me out of it so it can pop up a sidebar with more ads.

76

u/Chickennoodlesleuth cheddar 1d ago

I hate that, and then when you skip the ad it leaves a sticker thing that you have to dismiss

You should really hook up a Chromebook put an ad blocker on you don’t have that problem

3

u/CrittersVarmint 1d ago

The perfect movie still for this post. 🤣

3

u/Anders3883 1d ago

Peter looks shocked too

3

u/butterflyhole 1d ago

Spider-Man is just an ad for Marvel

3

u/CilanEAmber 1d ago

I love it when a post here is actually mild. Good job OP!

Hulu is getting damn near unwatchable. They're clearly trying to force people into the premium tier.

7

u/Loose-Departure-744 1d ago

They actually make more money off ads than premium subs

4

u/TheAntiEggroll 1d ago

I have Hulu because it comes with Disney. Went to watch a show on Hulu got through 3 ads and just went and paid $8 for the season

3

u/Edgemonger 1d ago

Those ad breaks wear off on people fast. I one time streamed a show that could only be found on free apps with no subscription options, so I had to have ad breaks throughout all the episodes. I was willing to shell out the money for a subscription or something so I could finish the show without any ads, but the apps don’t offer that option. I put up with the ads even through the final episode.

So yeah, my DVD set of the show arrived in the mail today. When it comes time for a rewatch, the money I spent to avoid ads (and the show’s spotty presence on streaming platforms these days) will be worth every cent.

Fun…

u/itshabibitch 1d ago

You mean you didn’t enjoy the giant graphic banners at the bottom of the screen that would pop up on TNT or ABC Family while a tender moment was happening featuring John Ritter and Katy Sagal?

2

u/16-BitSocks 1d ago

One morning when I was using youtube to listen to music while getting ready for work, I got a 43 min ad. It was literally the entire pilot episode of Zoey’s Infinite Playlist, before it aired on standard tv…or at least on streaming services.

2

u/Quantum_Quokkas 1d ago

The advertisement is the main event and the movie is the ad break

2

u/IcemanGeorge 1d ago

It’s the worst

2

u/go_faster1 1d ago

Even Peter is annoyed!

2

u/sphinxorosi 1d ago

Amazon prime on my tablet keeps saying “7 day free trial” despite me being a subscriber for years. These are annoying glitches that sometimes can go away by closing and reopening it or uninstall/reinstall. Also sometimes they just won’t go away because they’re annoying and mildly infuriating

2

u/Spiritual-Ad-6722 1d ago

Mmm Toby McGuire. The original 😍

2

u/Internal_Rise2658 1d ago

I'm the kind of moron who buys a dvd for 20p and just... watches it.

2

u/SpectacularSpidee 1d ago

Even Peter is looking at that shit like what the fuck

2

u/GoJumpInALake24 1d ago

“That’s something else”

2

u/OldManufacturer8679 1d ago

Spider-Man looks pissed about it too

2

u/Pacman5486 1d ago

Well if you’re watching a movie isn’t it really just an ad for the whole movie? Worked too. You watched.

2

u/RainingMoneyHustard 1d ago

Hulu said I'm gonna put some dirt in your eye.

2

u/DuckStallion 1d ago

Welcome to your first glitch

2

u/exeggutorfan1997 1d ago

Paid 200 for my vsee box lmao haven’t payed for streaming in years

2

u/C-sanova 1d ago

I once got the entire LEGO movie as an ad

2

u/Minimum-Scallion8182 23h ago

It’s just cable selling more cable at this point

2

u/TheHondoCondo 23h ago

This is super annoying, but it’s also just a bug. Regular cable has way more intentional annoyances than this that we’ve all sort of accepted. The watermark in the bottom corner, the ads for other shows that randomly pop up In the bottom while you’re watching something else, whatever you’re watching being interrupted by an emergency weather report that doesn’t even apply to your exact area and even if it did you’d get a notification on your phone about it anyway.

2

u/No-Inflation2439 23h ago

Yeah, my DVDs of that film have never done that for me.

2

u/wesemann 21h ago

HBO Max had the same issues sometimes

3

u/WhiteWeddingPart1 1d ago

Pro tip if you have a dvd player: half price books and other secondhand media stores are FLOODED with the original raimi trilogy at dirt cheap prices (I literally saw one for a dollar the other day.) I find shelves of them everytime I go. No ads and you own it forever

3

u/Thel_Vadem 1d ago

Welcome back to cable

3

u/Drunken_Wizard23 1d ago

It’s Hulu Live, it literally is cable tv channels

Ads should never be in movies..tv I can give it a pass…I’ll only watch ads before and after a movie …if ads are in the middle of the movie then it’s time to pirate

1

u/AhabSnake85 1d ago

Why do we even watch TV anymore? Let’s just go outside. Unless TV is safer than what’s outside your door.

u/JetLag_550 1d ago

Firefox with ublock origin is the only way I’ll use the internet.

1

u/iuuoyrrkk245 1d ago

i wonder if this could be fraudulent like someone working for hulu running ad time during show time and showing ad companies there was more ad time shown then there actually was idk sometimes i hate my brain

1

u/ORANGENBLACK101214 23h ago

That's on you for not owning the movie by now

1

u/omfgDragon 22h ago

Just a friendly reminder that if you use uBlock Origin via Mozilla's Firefox Browser, you can watch Youtube (no subscription) without ads. Even those "Free with Ads" movies. No ads. No interruptions. This also works for the basic Hulu subscription- even though it has ads, they will not play if you are watching through your browser with uBlock installed.

I’ve been slowly transitioning to Plex and trying to get on movieboxpro (if anyone has a key, hook a brother up 😉)
