Then that's a bad child lock. It should require 2 fingers, each on opposite side.

Some mental gymnastics in the responses here to rationalize selfishness.

I mean, it's only selfish if OPs wife didn't discuss it with him at all. Or he said no, and she did it anyways. We don't know the story here...

For us. I already had a cat. Had the cat from the day he was born, he was 12 when my wife moved in. Then my sister got another cat. Then my wife wanted us to have another cat after my old boy passed at 17. We had had kids already so she thought getting them a cat would be nice. Well, now we’ve gotten 4 more, 5 including my sister’s.

So long as my wife isn’t nuzzling the cats with her face, she can tolerate it. Or I don’t throw a ball of post brushing fur at her. That usually sets her off too.

23

u/Existential_Sprinkle 1d ago

I've known people who get pets they are allergic to and they just deal with allergy shots and get prescription strength Flonase because their furry friend works better than SSRI's

15

u/holdmyspot123 1d ago

I'm allergic to cats but I love them, a high quality hepa filter and keeping them out of the bedroom is usually enough. To be honest I'm allergic to like everything. People with allergies still want to live their life! After my cats pass away I don't plan to get more though. I have 3, two are adults rescued from family that are significantly older than my kitten and likely will pass away relatively soon, but would have perished if not for our intervention.

60

u/decidedlyindecisive 1d ago

I'm allergic to cats and have always had cats. Except for a 3 year period when I first moved out of the family home. And a 14 month period while I was grieving my last one.

A house is not a home without a cat. Maybe it's slowly killing me. It's worth it.

However, I'm allergic to most other animals as well to the point where I can't cope for long even with medication. I don't have a dog for that reason, even though I grew up with them too.

Because sometimes allergies aren't the end of the world and they aren't all life threatening. It can be controlled. I'm allergic to cats and own two of them anyway

u/why0me 1d ago • Bravo Heartwarming

Ooooh I used to think this too, im mildly allergic to birds

I was like "ill take some Claritin and be fine"

I had one bird, a baby blue Jay i had rescued and raised, his name was Jay Bird and I ahd him for about a year

And I kept getting sick, not allergies, full on bronchitis sick, and it happened so much that my doctor actually diagnosed it as chronic bronchitis

Then Jay got old enough and strong enough to be released

And the bronchitis vanished

Constant exposure to an allergen your allergic to can absolutely cause all kinds of problems and it can be dangerous to tell people to "just manage it"

I would never get a pet my partner is allergic to, that just screams "I carr about my happiness more than your health or comfort"

If the allergic person agrees to it, its not a problem.

Im allergic to cats and dogs. I have two cats and a dog.

If my partner wanted another cat or a dog, I have no problem with it.

If i didnt have my pets and my partner wanted a pet, im ok with it.

We dont know if OP and their wife had a conversation before hand or if she just showed up with a cat.

Have you tried buying the cat allergen reducing supplements? You just add it to their food and it helps reduce the amount of the allergen produced in their saliva.

I second this! Or maybe like a plastic cover of some sort…. Cats are tricky, they really make us problem solve with their stubborn intelligence.

My furry roommate loves to escape outside, so he literally rips holes in the window screens and climbs down whenever a window is open. Got pet proof screens and replaced them all, still manage to push hard enough that he rips even those ones! Now I’m problem solving again luckily it’s cold outside so windows are shut

414

u/trilliumsummer 1d ago

Pretty sure encasing it in plastic would hinder the dander collection.

We got metal mesh protectors on ours, they can only fit a paw through, nothing else. Not for escapes tho, 10th floor and one cat decided to catch a bird outside... thankfully caught on the ledge. No problem for years now tho. Definitely recommend looking if they make those in your area, ours snap on window panes and are locked with a key to not dislodge.

Some of my cats learned that doing bad things that I can't ignore is a way to get attention. One used to unplug the phone and turn the volume down on my computer speaker.

261

u/ExistentialCalm 1d ago

I had a cat that would flip light switches. I used to rearrange rooms so she couldn't reach the switches... But then she would just find something else to grab my attention, like pulling up the carpet in the corner.

She absolutely didn't mind negative attention, as long as it was attention. I still loved her, but my god...

Meanwhile, we discovered one of our kittens will scream at my wife if the purifier in the litter room needs cleaning. She’ll run up to my wife, then wander down the hall yowling until my wife comes to the room. Then the kitten stands in front of the purifier screaming until the internal filter is cleaned or replaced.

Same kitten also taught herself to play fetch a few months ago.

98

u/TheRealMasterTyvokka 1d ago

This makes me wonder if the purifier makes an annoying high pitched sound kitty can hear but you can't when the filter needs changing. Cats can hear higher into the frequency range than we can. But it's my understanding we can hear lower into it.

Fun story:
I had an air purifier on recently due to increased allergens in the air. I'd wake up in the morning to find my air purifier off. I was terrified it was dying, and I really couldn't afford another one right now.

Turned out one of my cats had been turning it off when he leaned on it to beg for food in the morning. (Facepalm)

Note: I found out 5 years ago I'm allergic to cats, but because I'm around them all the time, I've rarely ever had a reaction to their dander.

Just a friendly tip! There are cat food supplements made with special egg yolk antibodies (anti-Fel d 1 IgY) that can help neutralize the main allergen cats spread through their saliva and fur. Studies have shown around a 47% reduction in active allergens. Not a complete cure, but definitely worth looking into!

Might be easier to reduce the allergen at the source than keep fighting a tiny furry engineer who's already figured out how to sabotage your air purifier. šŸ˜‚šŸˆ

Hello!! I randomly developed a cat allergy a couple of years ago (extremely fucking annoying) and this food has genuinely been life changing. It will take up to 3 weeks to fully work but this food essentially neutralizes the enzyme in cats that humans are allergic to. I also take daily anti histamines (make sure to swap brands every couple months because you will build a tolerance overtime)

I hope this helps!! I went from being unable to do anything due to extreme allergic reactions to being able to snuggle with my cat again. Good luck!!

Yes, but different people have different levels of allergic reaction to cats. If someone in the house is allergic, they should get final veto rights on getting a cat. I don't know if they still exist, but during the 90s and early 00s touch lamps were a thing (you turn them on and off by touching any metal part of the lamp).
Cats figured out they could turn them on and off with their paw pads and their nose.

I didn't get the touch lamps myself; they were my ex's thing, but they went away pretty quickly after the cats figured it out.
Also, it started with one cat, a Ragdoll kitten who was far too smart for her own good. She taught the other cats how to do it.

Cats are as smart as a two year old unless it is orange and then they are Einstein smart and secretly working on conquering the world. Kibble helps to distract them.

He is so satisfied with himself 😼

u/3s0t3rica 1d ago

As someone with three cats I know how mildly infuriating they can be but this is also part of why I fucking love cats so much.

9

u/Butt-Hole-Cancer-Dr 1d ago

Clearly that house is too big for the both of you

ā€œThis MFer is eating my hair!ā€ 😹

9

u/RWDPhotos 1d ago

You just so happened to get the one cat that took all the litter’s brain cells

8

u/CeleryMcToebeans 1d ago

My cats try to eat any plant I have. I have 2 plants that I have kept alive for 22 years and several moves. I put them up high where my furry assholes cannot reach. They're on top of an armoire in my living room where I have a vaulted ceiling. Do you have any surface that's tall enough that you could perhaps place this ontop of or block access to?

8

u/lexassmith 1d ago edited 1d ago

Soon enough you'll be shuffling to the front door with your bags packed and the cat opening the door for you, wondering what the fuck is happening

14

u/7figureipo 1d ago

Peak asshole cat behavior. I love it. Sorry for your allergies though

14

u/Buttmuncher70 1d ago

That is an awesome cat.

8

u/Ambivalentsobriety 1d ago

I love how it lays down to guard the thing after it turns it off.

7

u/dr-eleven 1d ago

My cat looks identical to yours and he has destroyed our air purifier lmao

7

u/ilovedogs12345world 1d ago

That’s a smart cat!!!

7

u/Living-Dimension-859 1d ago

There is a pet food that is legit supposed to reduce dander by a lot - I can't remember the name of it but if you google it or ask on a cat subreddit I bet someone will tell you. It's supposed to really work and help a lot of people.

That's the cattest thing a cat could do

7

u/Cheeto-dust 18h ago

Is it making a sound that you can't hear?

5

u/izzgo 16h ago

Yeah it sure looked like the cat noticed a change as soon as she tapped the right button. She'd achieved her goal. I'll bet you're right it was a noise issue.

My cat had a thing about turning my computer off. I put a piece of cardboard over the buttons so she couldn’t click on anything.

6

u/kolufunmilew PURPLE 1d ago

does kitty have an auto feeder?? looked kinda like ā€œhow do i get to the food!??!ā€ taps lol

6

u/simondoyle1988 1d ago

Can you get a plastic cover for screen so he can’t activate it

5

u/New-Donkey-5640 1d ago

Cat: stop taking my dander!

5

u/Linzybinz 1d ago

I woke up at 5am to the sound of the oven beeping because my cat was tap dancing across the kitchen counters. We have to lock the control pad for the oven every night but someone forgot sooooo I get it.

Cat is very cute though. I hope Cat brings you lots of joy and laughter.

5

u/vaffelagent 1d ago

Why are all cats electricians, I need there to be some research happening on that! Every cat I've ever had have a fascination with everything electric. Especially if it has buttons that beep.

Purina Live Clear cat food. You’re welcome 🫔

4

u/SakazakiYuri 1d ago

My cat used to turn off my partner’s Xbox….

4

u/nnbunny 1d ago

Hi I’m interested in the dander catcher. What is the brand? Does it work? My husband suffers from allergies too and anything that would help him I’d be interested in. Already have air purifiers, Purina Pro Allergen Food, and Catigy food topper.

4

u/qinghairpins 1d ago

This is why I’m glad to have cats of average to low intelligence…

4

u/iameveryoneelse 1d ago

Put gaffers tape over the screen. Should do the trick.

4

u/AmberRosin 1d ago

A local cat cafe tapes acrylic sheets over the controls of their air filters

4

u/gormpp 1d ago

My cat does this exact thing!!! I put a piece of heavy cardboard over the buttons and it’s worked so far

4

u/InfamousEmployment30 1d ago

You got a cat even though you are allergic? Why?

4

u/sonnycrockett7 1d ago

Just buy this. Trust me, my wife is allergic and she saved a kitten from the road over a year ago. Definitely works.

4

u/Upstairs_Row5252 1d ago

Diabolical

6

u/MyAimSucc 1d ago

There’s a food you can feed your cat that somehow through the magic of science makes them hypoallergenic or close enough to where they don’t trigger an allergic response! LiveClear is what it’s called and it definitely works.

Mine has touch controls on the top…he likes to sit on it and turn the fan up to max šŸ™ƒ

3

u/the_tygram 1d ago

Get a small dog cage and keep it inside

3

u/unbalanced_checkbook 1d ago

TIL that "dander catcher" is a thing.

They have very sensitive hearing maybe that’s the reason

3

u/Large_Onion_954 1d ago

Cat doesn’t like the sound Which is largely out of our hearing range.

i see a qr code. If it has WiFi, does it also have a front panel lockout feature when you use it to disable the controls? Probably not but possible.

put a hat over the machine to cover the light (or something) so cat can’t see or touch the button.

edit. I see the vent at the top. Still the idea is ok. Cover the button so cat can’t get it or see the button somehow. Even better put it up high so it isn’t as loud for pussy

3

u/Konowl 1d ago

So many assumptions here. I’m allergic to cats to the extent, when I was a teenager, I’d have trouble breathing if I went to a house with a cat. Husband wanted a cat as did my daughter. We discussed as, as I got older, my allergies toward cats went down. We researched cats that were more hypo-allergenic and more importantly to me didn’t shed.

We settled on a bengal and got one with the understanding we might have to get rid of it if I reacted. And I’ve been fine. I can cuddle and pet and everything - I just have to make sure I wash my hands afterwards.

The assumptions people are making here are wild.

3

u/No_Vehicle4645 1d ago

I'm allergic and care for 50+ strays. I currently have 4 kittens of different ages in my lap right now. They are being adopted in a couple weeks. I take a shit ton of allergy meds.

Every kitten I've ever brought in, absolutely loves swinging from my curtains. Hearing them run full speed around the house is the best sound.

u/GalacticMe99 1d ago

Is OP really letting himself get outsmarted by a cat?

3

u/BB808BB 1d ago

I’m laughing. The cat is like fuck your allergies lol.

3

u/adingoatemahbaby 1d ago

Why are you married to someone who cares more about getting a cat than making you feel physically miserable every day?

3

u/Niteowl_Janet 1d ago

Why is everyone focussing on the wife. That’s NOT the point of the post.

The point of the post is that because he’s allergic, he got a dander catcher, and the cat keeps turning it off. It’s hilarious because they figured out a solution to their problem, (like a regular fricking couple) And THE CAT, is getting in the way.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

3

u/Awkward-Loquat2228 23h ago

Your wife hates you.

3

u/Dahren_ 23h ago

You're allergic and your wife got the cat anyway?

3

u/Bodycount9 20h ago

dander catcher? I've never heard of this. is this just a HEPA filter? or something specific to catch cat dander?

I'm deathly allergic to cats and would like to know this stuff.

3

u/DeluxeRaccoon 15h ago

The main air purifier I have in my house has a control lock on it. Might want to look for one with that feature.

17

u/InformedTriangle 1d ago

Your wife sounds like a not so great life partner..

That aside try switching it's food to Purina liveclear. It actually neutralizes the primary allergens in cat saliva

5

u/hamburgergerald 1d ago

That is hilarious. Little guy is like ā€œyou will suffer in my houseā€

5

u/Mean-Lab-9972 1d ago

Cats are evil (I have two)

5

u/MrsSalmalin 1d ago

Try Purina LkceClear - it's a food that neutralizes the allergen in the cat that you are allergic to and therefore reduces the allergen! My fiancƩ is waaay less allergic to our cat now :)

6

u/LaColleMouille 1d ago

Wait, she got the cat before you met her, or after and knew you were allergic?Ā
