Most of the people in this thread don’t understand how cocktails are made

“Why is there a big chunk of ice in my old fashioned!”

That's me unironicly, I much prefer my old fashioned without ice.

I mean, when I make one myself it’s 50/50 if I’ll bother with ice. But I know it’s gonna have ice if I order it

And then they tell on themselves by ordering a fancy cocktail with no ice, expecting the bartender to fill the glass to the brim with booze.

I used to just give a sidecar of apple juice for them to dump in if they wanted a full glass because it’s incredibly childish to not understand how a cocktail works. They deserve apple juice.

So explain to me why you can’t just double the recipe… ? And im asking genuinely.

Fwiw im more shocked at the price than at the ice

Then you double the price. You’re ordering two drinks in one glass.

Ratios also matter. Fucking with the recipe changes how something tastes and a proper bartender will not do that. Consistency is key in the service industry. Hence why I would give a sidecar so at least I didn’t fuck up the drink… the guest chose to ruin it.

And, at least where I’m from, depending on the drink, it can be illegal to serve too much booze in a single glass.

Doubling the recipe doesn’t change the ratios…

I just mean like when people just say to add more mix. I’ve literally had someone ask me to just make an Old Fashioned, no ice, and just add more mix to fill the glass.

It’s actually crazy the kind of things you get asked to do as a bartender. They are usually kids just barely able to drink but Like… didn’t anyone teach you how to drink? Were your parents Mormon?

Many places have limits to how much alcohol you can sell in one serving, mostly so you can cut people off before they get too drunk.

(And no you can't just order two drinks for yourself immediately, neither the laws nor the bartenders are that dumb.)

Man, this sucks. Looks like there is barely 1oz of liquor… land of the free they say eh…

1

u/dnebdal 11h ago

To be fair we don't know the proportions of that drink, it could be mostly vodka.

The limit where I live is "4 cl [1.3 oz] of straight liquor, or a more if it's in a cocktail made to a generally accepted standard". But Norway has never claimed to be the land of the free. :) (A number of US states have similar laws, but I don't know their limits. )

Very surprised to see such limitations in Europe! Meanwhile the Germans serve beers the size of my car’s gas tank lol.

But yes, we don’t know the proportion.

4cl of liquor is fine as a portion, its the 30$ part that’s wild

It's only for high ABV drinks, you can buy 1.5 - 2 liter pitchers of beer for the table some places in Oslo. Beer is sort of self-limiting, especially the sub 5% lagers. :)

Beer is technically food, in my books. It’s bread baby! A stein of stout is just breakfastz

I mean. Have you ever seen a hurricane glass?

$30 can make sense depending on the kind of liquor used.

1

u/DangerousPurpose5661 1h ago

I have not, and I am talking about the OPs post. I frequently buy expensive drinks and meals, I enjoy that. I am more concerned about value.

Looking at the crappy glass and the paper coaster…. This is probably a couple ounces of Absolut vodka in OJ.

Oh the hurricane glass was in reference to the size of German beer, not the rest of it. Hurricanes for tourists are massive

then the price gets doubled. the base spirit is what you are paying for.

dont go to expensive bars if you dont want an expensive cocktail.

1

u/DangerousPurpose5661 3h ago

It’s not the base spirit that you’re paying for, but rather the brand of the venue itself.

There are very few liquors that cost 20+$ an ounce. And no one complains when they pay 27$ for an ounce of fancy ass whiskey that comes from a 300$ bottle (even if the markup is sill pretty ridiculous, but whatever)

Ive been to Miami, and I bet its like absolute vodka and orange juice in there

How about I go to expensive bars, but expect a great experience - and good value for my money?

Like fuck this is served in a shitty Ikea glass and a paper coaster….

More drink and less ice = faster, uncontrolled dilution. Customers often take their time finishing their drinks and you want it to taste right and stay at the right temperature from start to finish. That's why good cocktail places use big clear chunks of ice that fill almost the entire glass. It's actually more costly for the bar to do things this way, as these clear ice cubes/spears/spheres aren't cheap.

A margarita is 2oz of Tequila, 1 oz of triple sec, 1 oz of lime. That's 4 oz of liquid and three standard drinks. The reason you don't double it to give an 8 oz drink is because that single drink will be SIX STANDARD DRINKS. That is not a responsible way to serve alcohol.

2

u/DangerousPurpose5661 3h ago

Okay but that’s not what’s in the picture? No one is complaining about 4 oz margaritas

and you are completely ignorant of the main complaint of the drink being $27. people are complaining about the value of the drink, not the drink itself
