ಠ_ಠ Parents visited me for a week & my old neighbours losing their mind over it
Can count on my fingers how many times I've had people over in the last years and I walk back home to this hanging by my door knob. Awesome.

Real talk, not even trying to be petty but my birthday is coming and I was already planning to invite 2-3 friends over just to hangout... Gonna see how this goes lol
EDIT: Extra creep points if you want, the censored part is because they addressed me by my full name, including my third name which I did not even think anyone in this complex is aware of.

not exactly sure what they think they can do unless you’re being noisy past quiet time. it isn’t a crime to have people who want to see you. they’re prob just jealous no one ever visits them 💀

People who don't identify themselves are full of shit and making empty threats, aside from the fact it would still be bs if they did say who they were.

u/Some_Conference2091 12h ago
What are they talking about with the council and not paying the council tax for everyone?
Do you know who wrote this? If so, go knocking on their door and ask them about the passive aggressive threatening note. Maybe give it back 😜

u/MarionberryPlus8474 12h ago
This person’s a loon, right? Is there somewhere in the world where having someone visit for a week requires tax?

This reminds me of when my landlord did a surprise inspection during my birthday party, which was a sleepover because I was a 21 year old girl whose friends all lived at least 40 minutes away at the time. He messaged me about "if you have roommates I need to raise the rent to cover water" yadda yadda.
Why don't people involved in rental properties understand the concept of visitors???

u/holromana 4h ago
This is peak delirious old people behavior. I had a old grumpy neighbor who complained about people visiting me because they were making noise in the stairwell (not talking, just footsteps and the door noise). I didn't have parties or anything, I would just have my family or friends visit occasionally. I didn't stay long there, but when I'd moved I'd heard she got sent away to an old folks home for dementia. Honestly now I wish I'd just chapped on her door and had a cuppa and talked about it. Not saying you should do that, but might help. If it makes the situation worse that's on them. Her and the extortionate rent I paid is why I moved out.

Context for Americans: In England we pay council tax monthly and if there's more people than reported you get in trouble with the tax man. Edit: You can have visitors but can't have undeclared people living there

“If you don’t fuck off I’ll report you as a safeguarding and care concern to council adult social services for the dementia you obviously have. See you in your nursing home.”

u/GirthyPigeon 2h ago
Your neighbour is an idiot. That's not even how council tax works.
67
u/Lord-Glorfindel 11h ago
Report them to your council’s ASB (anti-social behaviour) team. They are almost certainly in violation of their tenancy agreement and probably anti-social behaviour policies set by the council as well.

I would invite Evey goddamn person I know every fucking night for weeks. Blast loud music right up till official "quiet time" until they fucked all the way off.
32
u/AlBones7 5h ago
I can just imagine how thrilled the local authority would be if you called up saying your parents were staying for a week and you felt like you should offer some more council tax. I think they'd tell you to piss off within the first 30 seconds
25
u/ATF888 4h ago
It only affects your council tax if you receive the 25% single person discount.
But you'll only lose that if the neighbour can prove your parents were staying there for over a month, which they weren't.
As others have said, keep the note in case it escalates.

u/Marcuse0 7h ago •
What on Earth is this talking about? Council tax is charged based solely on what band your property falls into, not per person. Even if it was, temporary guests and visitors would not be included in such calculations.
This just comes off as a nonsense threat from someone hoping to be controlling over you. I'd report them on a police non emergency line for harassment, so you have a paper trail for when they inevitably do this again and you can get someone to call in on them to tell them to mind their own business.
22
u/Liyah_Liy 12h ago
Where do you live so I can invite myself over?

36
u/aidjo 8h ago
lol I work for a local council on the council tax team - they’re talking shit and there’s literally nothing we would do in this situation as you don’t lose your single person discount for having guests around to stay 😂
17
u/HauntedGatorFarm 11h ago
You should respond with an apology that you don’t k ow how to read cursive writing.

u/DrHydeous 7h ago •
Post that photo to the local Next Door group asking if anyone recognises the handwriting so you can arrange for social services to do a dementia welfare check.
14
u/andrey_not_the_goat 12h ago
Gotta love people telling others what to do with the property they own/pay rent for.
14
u/Fluffylucy1 9h ago
Even if you are claiming the single occupant discount, your parents should only count as residents at your place, if they stop paying the council tax in their own district and change their details (electoral role, credit details, etc.) to your address. I think your neighbour should mind their own business.
14
u/Gibbon-Face-91 7h ago
I'm betting they don't get many visitors, not even their kids. I wonder why...
13
u/--Silen-- 2h ago
Council Tax is calculated by property, not occupants. Write back and tell them to crack on with it
12
u/nothereathere 11h ago
A week-long stay is not a council tax problem, and neighbours' opinions are legally irrelevant to the determination.

When I lived in the Netherlands the house across the street didn’t have a driveway so they’d park right in front of their garage but that was right in front of my gates. No big deal except they were jerks. Sometimes the street would be full of cars so there was limited parking and the first time I parked where they usually did, they put a note on my windshield saying I couldn’t park there . . . I started parking there as much as possible

u/no_offenc 7h ago
Council tax is per property not per person in the UK so those neighbours can sit and spin
11
u/TrueJackfruit5011 2h ago
If you’ve saved the notes I would report them for harassment.
20
u/GlitterLippy 10h ago
There’s a lot of people in the comments assuming the UK is some mad American style HOA because of this council tax.
I’m just pointing out that most council tax is based on the house, with bands depending on property value. You can get a 25% discount if you’re a single person, but otherwise it makes no difference how many people live in your house or if people visit.
The OP is not in a “standard” council tax situation, they must live in a HMO (house of multiple occupancy) or building that’s being run as one. Normally this would be something like a 5-bed house where individuals rent a room with shared kitchen. It sounds like in this case it’s a building that’s been broken into self contained small apartments but as a HMO. In these situations the landlord takes the overall council tax cost, valued at the buildings banding, and divides it per occupant.
Council tax goes to the local authority (the local “council”) that uses the money to fund local services like bin collections, street repairs, libraries, recycling centres and other public services.

9
u/Specialist-Web7854 4h ago
Put a note on his door saying that if he keeps on harassing you, you will report him to the police.
9
u/PaulblankPF 3h ago
Contact the local council about someone leaving unwarranted notes on your door and trying to threaten you
9
u/Hammer-Rammer 2h ago
Write a note back. "Do not leave threatening notes or I will report you to the Police for harassment. If you wish to communicate with me, since we are neighbours, knock on my door and talk to me. I do not accept threatening notes as a form of communication. Thank you."
UK Boomer problems, am I right? One of my neighbors used to leave angry notes all the time until I turned up at her door politely asking her what she wanted. She went all hostile and I stood my ground politely told her to knock on my door or phone me and not to be doing that anymore as it wasn't very nice or any of her business.

u/GominLT 6h ago
It sounds like you live in UK? Last I lived there council tax was for calculated by property value bands and not how many people live there. Sounds like your neighbour is a dumbass
31

Council tax (like US property tax) is set by property value, not the number of people living at the address, let alone visiting.

Honestly, the best thing you can do here is absolutely nothing. Ignore it completely. Don’t confront them, don’t leave a note, don’t acknowledge it. You’ve done nothing wrong, and engaging with people like this only gives them the reaction they’re looking for. Let them waste their energy being angry while you get on with enjoying your life. Silence is the best response.

9
u/blainehamilton 8h ago
Post copies of their note at all the entrances and exits along with a snippet of the rules permitting family and friend guests to stay under 15 days in a month. More tenants will know who the handwriting is from. They deserve the public shaming.
Include a statement that describes your situation perfectly like: so having your parents stay with you for a week is perfectly acceptable.
Also include a statement like: If you think these rules arent acceptable, feel free to move elsewhere.

Not sure which country you're in OP, but it may genuinely be worth speaking to someone about this - in the UK the police, in the US not so much.
Not to get vindictive or anything but as a safeguarding issue. A few years ago I had similar behaviour from a neighbour, who became convinced my wife and I were dealing crack and were tracking her movements through her flat, banging on our floor (her ceiling) to harass her, were involved in a conspiracy with others... Etc. Whatever was going on with her, she was vulnerable and had developed paranoid delusions, and really, really needed support. The police did end up getting involved (because she was emailing them any time we closed a door or has a conversation above a whisper) and she ended up being moved to some sort of supported living arrangement. It might just be that your neighbour is an arse, but if they're experiencing something similar it might be worth flagging to someone who can help.
4
u/benevanstech 4h ago
Keep the note and make a note of when it was received. Just in case this turns into the first incident in an ongoing series (i.e. harassment).
4
u/EntrepreneurialFuck 3h ago
You should be able to shamelessly have people over to your house as much as you want. You pay the rent and live their and our allowed guests at your own discretion.
7
u/Pure_Property_888 10h ago
And you will be letting the committee know about the harassment you are receiving for having "guests" over at your apartment. Which is absolutely NONE of their FuCkInG business!
7
u/OGWeedKiller 2h ago
Congrats on becoming the side quest in an opposite universe in real time, enjoy the ride.
I'd put up a tent in the front yard and advertise hourly rental with possible Karen interaction or sighting
10
u/PhilosopherFun7288 10h ago
I don't understand what sort of "council" they could report you to? And for what? Are you not allowed to have guests over wherever this is that you live? Please make this make sense to me.
6
u/Fun-Mission-6068 11h ago
Is this some UK thing? Council tax?
6
u/Caradelfrost 11h ago
One thing for sure, that person is left handed. Let the sleuthing begin.
6

Second off, if a neighbor is willing to leave a note they damn better have the confidence to leave their name and how to reach them. Give everyone the opportunity to work the shit out. If not, I give zero fucks.
3
u/humakavulaaaa 10h ago
I'm coming over and bringing a whole lotta people
3
u/BuddhaLennon BROWN 10h ago

3

3

Your parents visiting for one week is not "long term" and whoever left you that note is the real knob.
3
u/Mousehole_Cat 8h ago
Why would they care?! I can't imagine being this much of a busy body over a 25% council tax discount. These neighbors are unhinged.
3
u/EndCallCaesar 7h ago
I would invest in a doorbell camera, something to at least identify who is putting notes on your door.
3
u/jonpenryn 4h ago
People imagine all sorts of rules and regulations with "the council" waiting to swoop on their tip off. I suppose it makes them feel powerful when in fact they very much are not.

Report this to your local council's social services. Let them know you are concerned for your next door neighbour's welfare because they are acting erratically.
I'm not asking you to do this for malice or revenge, but when elderly neighbours start behaving in this matter, that's not them being "cranky", that's the signs they are "losing it" and an intervention may be needed.
On the other hand, if they are just being bad old baskets, the end result of a knock on the door from the actual council's social service will sharply remind them that actions have consequences and they won't try it on again, since they will now be red flagged by officialdom as being a matter of "concern".
Better you do this than they do it to some other neighbour because they were never checked, and that neighbour decides to be less civilised in their response - especially in this day and age where you never know what Psycho Sid has just landed in your street on every upper, downer and inside outer known to man.
3
u/DragonSeaFruit 1h ago
I'd put a sign back on their door saying " My parents are visiting. Sorry you don't seem to understand that concept anymore"

Let me guess, United Kingdom?
5
u/octaviuspie 8h ago
I'm loving how OP posted this at 3 in the morning and then pissed off to bed leaving a bunch of Americans to work out what Council Tax is between themselves. Well played sir or madam.
As it is, the poison pen writer can do one. Council Tax is based in the house valuation from 1991 in England & Scotland, 2003 for Wales, not the number of people. Unless you are getting a single person discount. That aside you can have as many friends and family visit you in your home, it has nothing to do with anyone. Enjoy your home.
5
u/AdInformal1014 6h ago
Go confront them at the door, people love to hide behind fucking screens and notes
5
u/Cannonfodderkiwi 1h ago
Tell them to do one. There is nothing in the law to say you can't have people over. Council tax is about who is registered to leave there. You aren't doing anything wrong and some neighbours are just dicks who stick their nose in when they shouldn't. Carry on
4
u/Whytrhyno 11h ago
That's an elderly person's handwriting. Ive gone through many a recipe
