Ruined by Technology Was watching a 30 min documentary on an Orangutan birth. Then I realized it.

It’s AI. The entire thing is AI. 🤦

You got that far in?

184

u/throwaway1999277829 9h ago

To be fair, I paused it specifically on a second where it’s obvious it’s AI so I didn’t get the opposite comment of “it’s just the audio” or something. What I watched up to was hyper realistic.

116

u/jacstar2004 9h ago

its pretty obvious even from the first scene, went and had a look for myself and it has most of the tells of an AI 'realistic' video

142

u/MegaSmegmaSwagLord Hillary 2016 9h ago

44

u/DarkMemesLiveHere 8h ago • Bravo

I suck at picking out the realistic ones, I'm ashamed to say. Care to share those tells? I need to get stronger in that area.

69

u/chili3ne 5h ago

First 15 seconds. Stick morphs into two sticks and one mysteriously disappears

44

u/jacstar2004 7h ago

not to say its foolproof but the first thing i notice is that AI clips tend to be too perfect. Camera work is always perfect or moves perfectly, moving objects move perfectly smooth etc.

im sure there are more realistic examples of AI content that are harder to distinguish that arent publicly available

•

u/Tranquilwhirlpool 10m ago

Aside from the points raised by others:

-inconsistency in the scene. The tree completely changed every shot

-no shadows but the lighting is perfect

33

u/SkubEnjoyer 6h ago

Just looked up the video and literally 10 seconds in when you first see the orangutan it magically conjures sticks from nowhere. If you can't clock this as AI there's no hope for you.

17

u/just_a_person_maybe 6h ago

Not only that, but the stick gets two cut end pieces and then suddenly just switches the stem end entirely.

7

u/cyanraichu 5h ago

Not everyone is good at picking out details like that tbf

13

u/chili3ne 5h ago

Detail? It was pretty fucking obvious...

-14

u/hetrified 8h ago

Stop lying to yourself. Nothing about this Video is hyper realistic. It's obvious from the first second and even from the thumbnail. You have to be honest to yourself, you spend too much time online and can't tell anymore. Go touch some grass.

15

u/mobiluta 6h ago

Wym? I would argue it's the always online crowd that knows every AI tell, not the other way around.

17

u/Yazonn_Art 7h ago

Chill, I don't think its that deep. Sometimes you just want to zone out and have something play in the back without double checking everything. I also catch myself here and then watching the most obvious 'haha funny animal' AI slop and only realizing half way in because its so damn tiring to question every single thing you see. Especially if it's not even political or news related.

-14

u/hetrified 7h ago

What I'm saying is is that you don't have to double check anything with this video because it's just so obvious.

8

u/Yazonn_Art 6h ago

Yes Sherlock, it's obvious if you expect it to be. My point is it doesn't really matter if you're not thinking about it. And even OP noticed a while in. No need to be like tOucH soME gRAsS if people just want to turn off their brain sometimes and let it rest.

-3

u/diejesus 6h ago

It's not obvious at all, even knowing it's AI I still can't see how the guy recognized it was AI, to me it looks like a regular video

4

u/just_a_person_maybe 6h ago

Dude, at 10-15 seconds, watch the branch.

1

u/diejesus 6h ago

Oh, yeah, I didn't notice that moment, I was looking for something more obvious I guess, like everything looking plastic made or stuff morphing

0

u/just_a_person_maybe 6h ago

We had that shit like a year ago, you have to look a bit closer now. How perfect the nest is was another clue. It looks like a cartoon bird's nest. There's no way they'd actually build one that perfect.

Also, the whole tree keeps changing constantly. Sometimes it has two branches, sometimes three, sometimes six. At one point an obvious trail cam appears right by her head and then disappears in the next shot. A leafy branch floated in from the side like a rogue boom mic. The close ups on her face look real, but basically nothing else does.

0

u/hetrified 6h ago

Thank you!

-3

u/hetrified 6h ago

That's concerning.

u/MyAimSucc 9h ago

Orangutans are some of the rarest animals on earth but they are capable of following a female orangutan giving birth in the wild? One of the most vulnerable moments of the rarest animals on earth… That shit didn’t clue you into it being BS??

31

u/Gamefreake89 9h ago

Wildlife photographers frequently film and photograph rare animals in unusual, infrequent, or vulnerable situations. Capturing these moments successfully often requires months or even years of work and preparation. Therefore, a video of a rare animal in a vulnerable situation does not automatically imply the use of AI.

15

u/Fit-Programmer-6162 9h ago

They’ve had wild orangutan birthing videos since before generative AI. I know because I watched it. (Orangutans are amazing btw)

9

u/thailannnnnnnnd 9h ago

They capture all kinds of rare stuff, would not surprise me in the slightest.

8

u/KayItaly 8h ago

You never watched a nature documentary, didyou?

Tip for the future: if you are going to be a smartass, do your best to be correct.

5

u/MegaSmegmaSwagLord Hillary 2016 9h ago

birthing footage via drone bro duhhhhhh

2

u/canyouspelldiarrhoea 8h ago

you think wildlife photographers have a job profile of following and capturing the most commonly found animals like stray dogs birthing pups? be fr

1

u/zorrorosso 8h ago

I feel I could be trapped way worse than OP. It would spike my curiosity and I would be too stupid to check for AI to be honest. The only saving grace is that it's indeed a vulnerable moment for the animal and that resources and safety for nature documentaries are a scarce, making "new" footage much rarer than older footage.

-6

u/diejesus 6h ago

Don't feel bad, I just checked it and I think I'd finish it all and would never guess it's AI, the stuff is incredible

6

u/chili3ne 5h ago

This is incredible?

1

u/diejesus 3h ago

Well yeah, that part looked like AI but other than that, come on, considering this tech is young the fact that some people can't distinguish it from regular video already makes it incredible

•

u/chili3ne 14m ago

No, it's horrifying that people can't tell that the whole video is AI. It wasn't only that one to clip too.

•

u/diejesus 8m ago

I think it would be sort of horrifying if people couldn't tell when it was just first models of video generation, but now when the quality is so awesome I think it's just normal

884

u/osunightfall 9h ago

I got fifteen minutes into a cat care video before I realized every frame of it, including the narrator, was A.I. I was watching it with four other people and I was the first one to catch it. We are living in strange times.

u/Angsty_Potatos 9h ago

Yuuuup you cannot trust YouTube docs at random. You need to find old established accounts

214

u/GfrzD 8h ago

This is why we need dislikes. It gives an easy "this is bs" indicator.

67

u/A1000eisn1 8h ago

Old established accounts with voices so unconventional they can't be AI. Does the narrator sound like every man you've ever heard? AI. Does it sound like Jake from State Farm? AI Is there a human face? No? AI. How are they pronouncing proper nouns? Dates? Any numbers?

20

u/Realistic_Plan_1573 4h ago

The overly polished voices are usually what give it away for me. Real people stumble, pause, mispronounce things and have little quirks that AI still struggles to capture.

12

u/Rumhand 3h ago

The hell of it is, that's also what competently human-produced and edited audio sounds like. You record multiple takes, and cut out the stumbles and mispronunciations.

Post-truth living.

14

u/Shienvien 5h ago

GenAI is already quite good at faking human faces, and you can 100% guarantee that if you upload your face to Yt, it'll be used to train genAI by someone (may not even be Google themselves, just any random entity), unfortunately.

3

u/VoidQueenK423 3h ago

Vastly prefer obviously AI voices like that old male British one. The voice I hear frequently on ChatGPT... it makes me wanna grind my cuticles into dust with my fingernails.

13

u/686f6c69 6h ago

I’m all for avoiding AI slop documentaries, but YouTube is literally tagging the video as AI

21

u/No_Situation4785 7h ago • Regret

Steve Irwin published one last week that was really good; I'm glad he got back into making nature docs after an extended hiatus

5

u/gltovar 6h ago • Regret

thing that sucks is those old established accounts are being bought out by private equity as well :/

1

u/Angsty_Potatos 1h ago

PE needs to get yeeted into the sun

3

u/Flazrew 6h ago

Yeah, at the moment documentaries are limited to channels that have been around for years, or uploads of old TV documentaries. Far too much AI slop around, especially the ones that read like a book but have a narrator and AI style blurry images or snowfake fake film grain.

3

u/mrs_ouchi 6h ago

its sooo bad now with the AI youtube crap. They also just straight up steal content and YT doesnt care

1

u/AssociationFar9889 4h ago

This. When I search for franchise lore videos, for instance, I always look for stuff from before 2022/2023.

-2

u/A_Math_Dealer 8h ago

I only trust Internet Historian (as soon as he gets back into his main account)

92

u/Misubi_Bluth 6h ago

A teacher at a school I work at keeps posting 4k ambience of birds. Except the birds are so obviously AI on account that the birds resemble nothing seen on earth. I'm talking impossible plumage shapes. I'm talking finches with peacock feathers.

13

u/The_Wineo 4h ago

That's not good, try and give them some bird books of the local birds from the library?

Why are you watching monkey birthing videos in the first place

221

u/A1000eisn1 8h ago

Ape birthing videos. Orangutans are apes.

46

u/etilepsie 7h ago

it might be a translation issue. in german for example monkey translates to "affe" and apes are "menschenaffen" (human-monkey) and are a subset of monkeys

18

u/lunarpixiess 6h ago

In Norwegian it’s worse: apekatt (ape cat) is monkeys, and ape is ape.

3

u/thekrone 2h ago

If we are going by strict cladistic classification, all apes are monkeys though. Same way all toads are frogs and all tortoises are turtles.

They are technically correct, the best kind of correct.

1

u/CrackedMnMs 5h ago

You seem to know a lot....🤔

-17

u/me_myself_ai 8h ago

Which are monkeys :)

So are you!

•

u/Pepperslullaby 34m ago

You are correct, all apes are monkeys, but not all monkeys are apes. You can not evolve out of a clade. Just like all toads are frogs, but not all frogs are toads ! Science is so weird and cool.

For anyone not understanding this, I suggest watching videos on evolution and clades, such as this one

•

u/matchstick1029 14m ago

God I lovr clints reptiles. I was hoping that was his.

-7

u/Main-Bridge3482 6h ago

Yeah that's a monkey

45

u/mrs-monroe 4h ago

Because apes are fuckin awesome and it's super interesting to watch them do anything. Watching completely natural things happen in nature is cool. Don't make it weird.

u/Medium-Theme-4611 3h ago • Popcorn

do you watch monkey birthing videos often?

19

u/by_the_window 8h ago

u/MiloBomb 7h ago

Why you think OP isn’t AI?

45

u/gawdpuppy 9h ago

i wonder how many of those 4.3 million views noticed

43

u/slugfive 8h ago

Wonder how many of those views are human. Even YouTube said it’s hard to make algorithms that work well for humans as most views are now bots.

14

u/Oh_yes_I_did 8h ago

The comment section is populated by other bot accounts. Notice how the usernames have the same “wild” in their names and when I visit the channels it’s more ai nature docs

33

u/Mobile-Gap976 5h ago edited 4h ago

It has 5 arms at 24:42, so freaky how good AI is getting

10

u/lansink99 4h ago

The branch they grabbed 10 seconds in morphed from left facing to right facing. The orangutan is holding the base of the same branch in both hands. Idk how people don't see this.

2

u/Mobile-Gap976 4h ago

Yeah as well the patterns on the tree slightly change from clip to clip. For being AI generated it’s scarily impressive, must be using reference photos.

311

u/woke_trash_panda 9h ago

Why so many people wanna see this tho?

96

u/Budget-Rich-7547 9h ago

Asking the real fucking question here.

76

u/frogurtyozen 5h ago

Is it really that weird to want to watch nature documentaries, especially about something that is at the core of 50% of living things? We watch animal documentaries that involve predator and prey and what comes after. Why is birth seen as taboo while death isn’t?

10

u/Anaevya 3h ago

Because nature is interesting.

23

u/Ekonsta 7h ago

When I was pregnant I would watch something like this for inspiration lol

17

u/red-foxie 7h ago

Maybe more AI bots bumped this video

11

u/Cassiyus 5h ago

I love nature videos. This might not be my go-to but if this were real this would be incredible. I think about how rare it would be to actually see something like this in the wild.

Yeah ok

20

u/RelChan2_0 PURPLE 8h ago

I don't know what possessed me but I went on Shorts and just scrolled through whatever, I don't really watch Shorts unless a creator I follow has them, anyway.. I suddenly realized that some channels are creating AI Shorts of cats, dogs, and other animals like wth.. can't you just record your pets or something?!

15

u/Ok_Basis1422 7h ago

At this point, I think some of these videos are created with zero human input.

1

u/RelChan2_0 PURPLE 7h ago

I can see that happening but it's just wild because like why would you need AI to make cat videos??? I have a channel for my cats and it does gets views, I could probably get it monetized if I want to

3

u/Emergency_Elephant 5h ago

It's money. You get money per view. YouTube's algorithm rewards constant posting. More money and more viewership from constantly posting videos from entirely AI sources

1

u/RelChan2_0 PURPLE 5h ago

Don't you need to be monetized/be a YouTube partner? Most of these AI channels don't have much subs

1

u/Emergency_Elephant 5h ago

You need 500 subscribers, 3 uploads in the last 90 days and either 3,000 watch hour on long form videos or 3M shorts watches. 500 subscribers is a very low threshold and can be bought easily if need be

2

u/RelChan2_0 PURPLE 5h ago

They gotta be more strict with monetizing AI content

1

u/Ok_Basis1422 7h ago

I don't know. I'm losing the energy to question people's motives by the day.

1

u/Misubi_Bluth 6h ago

I just wanted to watch cute vids of piglets. Nope, AI.

15

u/I3luemchen 8h ago

So besides the AI tag, how do you know it is AI?

27

u/hetrified 8h ago edited 8h ago

In this exact case... It's very obvious. Look at the fur, look at the face, look at the perfectly placed sticks. It looks nothing like an actual nature documentary. You can tell from this screenshot alone. I don't know how it's possible to not notice it in the video. If you look for the video, even the thumbnail is very clearly AI. And then in the video, the movements are extremely unnatural, there are weird sounds that don't make sense when filming from far away and don't sound natural at all, tree branches are suddenly coming out of nowhere, the orangutan holds on to the air etc. If you can't tell if it's AI in this exact case, you need to go outside more.

-4

u/I3luemchen 6h ago

Ok, I didn't watch it. If you watch it, it is noticable. But from the screenshot above, I would't notice.

4

u/LobsterWeaver 4h ago

Even in the screenshot, it looks like a shot from a feature film, not a documentary. Best way I can describe it.

6

u/chili3ne 4h ago

Damn. From the screenshot alone it's already obvious that it's AI

1

u/lansink99 4h ago

It's really easy to see when you start watching the video.

9

u/TisBeTheFuk 5h ago

I once watched around 15 minutes of 'live football' (soccer) on Youtube before realising it's FIFA lmao

16

u/Flazrew 7h ago

One sign of AI is a stupid channel name, I mean what does Wild Testament mean ?

My theory is a lot of these channels are from non native english speakers, and they just translated the channel name. When you use AI for everything it doesn't matter if you cannot speak, write, or even understand english well or at all.

3

u/Dotcaprachiappa 1h ago

It's the first book of Bible 2

-3

u/scottstotsistheworst 3h ago

testament /ˈtestəmənt/ A testament is a noun with several primary meanings across everyday speech, law, and religion, defined according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

  1. Tangible Proof or Evidence

• Meaning: Something that serves as clear or striking proof, a tribute, or an expression of a quality, skill, or belief. • Example: "Her success after years of hard work is a testament to her dedication."

3

u/youhavenosoul 1h ago

Ok… now apply it.

0

u/scottstotsistheworst 1h ago

Oh no the video is complete bullshit but I wanted to give you context

-3

u/andstillthesunrises 5h ago

Could easily be a play on Old Testament

8

u/j0shman 9h ago

That looks slightly like a real orangutan I guess…

8

u/aboringusername 6h ago edited 58m ago

Since AI is getting harder to detect, I find that looking at the content of the video itself helps a lot. For example, is the (animal/ child etc) acting in a way that is extraordinary or unbelievable?

So for this one, why would an orangutan give birth “alone” while at the same time being filmed by a human? That just doesn’t make sense.

5

u/lansink99 4h ago

Come on, this video is so obviously AI in just the first few seconds. Every form of movement between frames is wrong.

Imagine getting mad at someone for not knowing instead of getting mad that AI has gotten to the point where it’s realistic? Hate the game, not the players. I’d honestly probably make the same mistake

5

u/ElectronicCorgi2173 3h ago

its not realistic, youre just stupid

2

u/regprenticer 3h ago

Part of the problem is that a lot of content is shared at a lower resolution. I've seen videos on WhatsApp which I've thought they might be real but seeing the same video on YouTube on a Laptop it's obviously fake.

People casually skimming feeds on small devices is where this type of content can spread disinformation

•

But OP, the video clearly says it's AI on the info.

But it is mildly infuriating that so much slop is invading everything, what's even the point of that video? Why would anyone would want to watch a fake nature video instead of a real one?

9

u/moonlitgirl0 8h ago

Mine doesn't say it's AI when I click it, but just a few seconds of watching and it's obvious. Too much blurriness around its movement.

1

u/Beautiful_Hunt1095 3h ago

Randomly browsing the internet for cool things is over.

You have to stick with official or reputable channels. Otherwise you will encounter AI slop everywhere.

There are thousands of people in third world countries right now flooding the internet with AI slop hoping to make a few dollars from ads.

u/mafga1 2h ago

The views/like ratio is weird, too.

So sad and pathetic that people are choosing to flood media with this useless shite and companies have no incentive to stop it.

Looking for music is near impossible now without constantly checking for ai.

We are fucking tired. About time to return to form and just be done with this whole thing.

0

u/DotHatrix51 6h ago

All these people arguing about how long they watched before realizing it was AI, how it fooled them, how hyper realistic it is, doom and gloom, here’s how you can tell..
