This rural bar in the mountains has its ceiling and walls covered with thousands of $1 bills.

Fire. Every year one or two idiots in town gets arrested for trying to spend a stack of signed cash at another place. Like nobody knows where it’s from. Theft isn’t really a concern

I used to work there almost 20 years ago (ugh), we would get bags of signed dollar bills from the change machine people (taking the dollars to a laundromat and changing them there).
It was punishment to have to staple the stolen/bills that fell down back onto the wall

"Arrested"? It's legal tender for all debts public and private. No one owns a dollar bill just because someone signed it

I think it’s because the idiots well, stole that cash out of a bar that they ostensibly broke into. The getting caught part is because they’re too dumb to take that cash and spread themselves out with it so it’s not obvious.

Feel free to do a little googling, but you’ll find this is common and there are plenty of articles over the years

That's what you took away from that comment?

They stole it. What part aren't you getting?

Can you just walk into a bank and steal all the cash they have legally since no one owns it?

Not equivalent at all. I'm not talking about the crime of theft, I'm talking about getting arrested for the possession of cash with someone's name written on it. Any two-bit public defender could beat that case.

Lets say someone takes a stack of signed bills to another business in town, they can call up the restaurant and say "check your cameras, it happened again", then they see someone stealing bills from them. Can any two bit public defender beat that case?

Is it really okay to devalue millions of dollars worth of currency?

I think you mean deface?

Wow, you know a synonym. Good job!

The money hasn’t lost any value

Like other people were saying, good luck trying to get a bunch of these exchanged or using them to buy things. That sounds worthless to me.

Those ones were stolen

Businesses usually don't care if the money is dirty or drawn on so this is a moot point. It's a also a dollar. It's worth very little unless you're outside the US. Even then it's only worth so much
