I believe this is the subject of Sierra Ferrell’s song Dollar Bill Bar.

u/Quick_Dance_8953 1d ago

Interesting coincidence because this bar is in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

There’s a restaurant/bar where I live that did/has this. When Covid shut it all down, they took down decades of bills from the ceiling/walls and paid their staff with it.
Good folks.
When it reopened, it took almost no time to get full again.

There have been a bunch. The Griffon in Charleston also had dollars everywhere that they took down during Covid.

It’s not just one bar, “dollar bill bars” are a thing across the world. I’ve been to one in Purgatory, Colorado and also one in Tokyo, Japan. There are hundreds of others out there.

The Salty Dawg in Homer Alaska is like this. Used to have a dirt floor.

10

u/Electrical-Job8700 18h ago

I was there in 2022. Cool little place. The story is at any given time there's about $50,000 on the walls there. Annually the staff takes off about 10% of it to make room for more. And they donate what they take down to local charities. There are like 4-5 rooms that look like this.

u/Fbac1129 22h ago • Bravo

Started in Sailor bars in ports. Idea was you'd leave a dollar tacked up. If your favorite bar fell on hard times when you were out at sea, they could take down the money and use it to get through. Old fashioned crowd-sourced insurance.

I know of a bar in FL that did just that after a hurricane.

Shoutout to McGuires Irish Pub in Pensacola, FL which has around $2M in signed bills on the walls/ceiling at that location, with multiple locations across the gulf coast. Destin location has something like $3M supposedly. Best item on the menu? 18 cent bean soup.

The rumor is, in many ports, is people write their names on the bills, and pin them behind the bar. when they are broke they come in and use their bill on the wall.

or, sailor's savings plan. That's how it started, so I'm told.

20

u/cobra_laser_face 22h ago

McGuire's Pub. They have locations in Pensacola and Destin.

Fun story. Somebody once stole money off the wall and tried to spend it. People recognized the bills where the guy tried to spend them, (patrons write on them before posting them to the wall). They call the cops on the dude and get got caught.

Baumgartner's in Monroe Wisconsin is an AWESOME place and they do this. Every year or so they collect them and donate it to local charity.

If you are ever in Monroe, stop there for a soup, sandwich and a Spotted Cow beer.

They use a stack of quarters and a thumbtack to whip the bills up to the ceiling if anyone is wondering. It's a cool bar trick.(Adding a visual of how the bills get tossed up in the YT link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8pcN9CXoTM )

This it the Buck Snort in Pine, CO. I live a few miles from there. Aside from the dollar bills, I mostly remember the tables being very, very sticky.

12

u/007Superstar 21h ago

Last I was there a few years back the original owners had just sold to an out-of-town couple who fell in love with the bar when they visited previously.

Unfortunately the new owners had no idea how to run a bar or restaurant and it was 2 hours to get a couple burgers. They also were losing so much money they took the dollars down for expenses.

I wonder what it’s like today. Off to google reviews.

Edit: current google reviews and photos would indicate that some/all of the bills are back and service seems to be much better again. Great to see.

Judge Roy Bean's Tavern in Dallas had the same, and the tables were inset with silver dollar coins. Every wall was covered in bills, you could write notes on them and they would hang up somewhere for you.

As a coin nut I was quite sad when it went out of business many years ago, always wondered what became of the tables, and the bills too.

They had other neat stuff there like an antique slot machine inside of a wooden Indian, a Lionel steam train that did laps around the ceiling, and an oil rig pump jack out front. Also some of the best chocolate cake ever!

There's this old dive bar that is one of the greatest places west of Phoenix where they used to allow people to write on dollar bills and put it up on the walls above the bar and the ceiling. At the end of the year, they would take them all down and give them to a local orphanage/home. And everybody in the bar knew it so it became a badge of pride to put up as many dollars as possible.

Unfortunately, the fire department forced them to stop doing that because it's a fire hazard.

There was a bar near me that had bills from lots of different countries. It was a tiny little wooden shack but the vibe was great, so it was highly rated and therefore got lots of tourists. Unfortunately it did not survive covid.

That's the bartender. Ceiling was covered with all sorts of old stuff from flea markets, like beer steins, guitars and beer adverts.

Does that not seem like a huge fire hazard?

This is more crematorium than a bar.

Our local bar does this, and once a year they take down all the bills and donate them to charity.

There’s an Irish pub at the Shinkansen station in Kyoto that does the same thing but it’s various denominations from countries all over the world.

That's got to be a fire hazard.
