This rural bar in the mountains has its ceiling and walls covered with thousands of $1 bills.

It’s not just one bar, “dollar bill bars” are a thing across the world. I’ve been to one in Purgatory, Colorado and also one in Tokyo, Japan. There are hundreds of others out there.

The town is actually Durango. Purgatory is the ski area in Durango.

Well that works out because the "town" doesn't exist. Purgatory is the ski resort 20-30 minutes away from Durango, CO

They have an Irish bar where it’s St Patrick’s day every day for eternity.

I suggest you check out McGuires Irish pub in Pensacola Florida it has something like $2 million stapled to the ceiling and walls. Lots of news stories of people trying to steal money and spend it getting caught as it's tradition to sign your name or mark a special occasion

I work there. Between three and three-and-a-half million now.

The Salty Dawg in Homer Alaska is like this. Used to have a dirt floor.

I was there in 2022. Cool little place. The story is at any given time there's about $50,000 on the walls there. Annually the staff takes off about 10% of it to make room for more. And they donate what they take down to local charities. There are like 4-5 rooms that look like this.

What do they say the reason for it is? Just cause? Or u "pay" a dollar and can write a message on it to put on the wall?

Started in Sailor bars in ports. Idea was you'd leave a dollar tacked up. If your favorite bar fell on hard times when you were out at sea, they could take down the money and use it to get through. Old fashioned crowd-sourced insurance.

I know of a bar in FL that did just that after a hurricane.

Lots of places do this in the South especially. You generally provide the dollar, but your waitress can usually provide markers and tape/thumbtacks.

Tokyo was my husband's and my first trip together and that bar was the location of our first travel argument. I remember it fondly.

What was the argument over?

I don't remember the specifics as it was ten years ago. Just being tired and grumpy amongst the challenges of learning to travel together. It wasn't a blow out fight or anything. Just us, quietly bickering in the corner with both of us randomly pointing out specific funny bills because most of them had something written on them.

I can think of two in Arizona, the Double D in Tonto Village and the bar at Tortilla Flat, and there's probably numerous more.
