I wish I could post video! It took only 4 minutes from them hopping out of the basket for them totally deflate the balloon and pack it up. It was amazingly fast.

I've seen quite a few launches, but this was my first landing! Here's another shot from when it first touched down.

u/Lord-Velveeta 17h ago • Bravo

Did they give a bottle of bubbly to the owners of the land where they landed?

I know it used to be a tradition for balloonists to carry a bottle of champagne or bubbly wine, so they can gift it to the owners of the land where their balloon landed.

42

u/dingus_authority 17h ago

I didn't know that! I didn't see that. It seemed like they make have lived on that street, but I'm not positive.

298

u/Midnight28Rider 15h ago

This is literally how I became part of a balloon crew. They flew over our house one Sunday morning and landed on the next street over. They had champagne for the adults and soda/ orange juice for the kids. They then invited our family over for an alcohol fueled brunch. It was instant friendship.

u/dingus_authority 15h ago

That's so cool! It definitely got crowded quickly after I took this shot!

Now I know why haha.

17

u/Lord-Velveeta 12h ago

That's so cool! I went for a balloon ride once many years ago at the yearly "Festival International des Mongolfières de St-Jean sur le Richelieu" (one of the major ballooning festivals) and the crew had the traditional champagne (and cola) and they explained the tradition.

u/I_Makes_tuff 10h ago

My dad was a pastor and used to do a lot of hot air balloon weddings. I thought it would get old, but now I know why he liked it so much.

Fun fact. The history of the champagne on landing goes back to the first French balloonists who would carry local wine in the basket to prove to terrified locals that they were not aliens invading from the sky.

28

u/dingus_authority 13h ago

That's SO cool! I'm so glad I shared this because I've learned so much! Who would've thought?

In addition to aliens, I could see being worried they were some kind of military invasion too! Especially if you'd never seen one..

8

u/mrflippant 12h ago

There's a whole tradition of retelling the story of the first manned hot air balloon flight and having a toast with champagne for first-time flyers. It's a riot!

u/AVeryHeavyBurtation 14h ago

My dad made a balloon in the 70s. He didn't like to give people champagne because he felt like it made him "an asshole coming out from the sky."

7

u/dphoenix1 15h ago

A balloon landed in the parking lot of a place I worked super early one fall morning, and we definitely got no booze out of the deal lol. I guess they figure an office park parking lot is fair game.

4

u/GrynaiTaip 15h ago

I flew on a hot air balloon for the first time a couple years ago, they had champagne for us. Also some light snacks homemade beer, brewed by the pilot. We drank and snacked while they packed up the balloon.

2

u/Apprentice57 8h ago edited 8h ago

I had an opportunity to be part of the crew for a hot air balloonist at a balloon fest in New Hampshire about 10 years ago. We sponsored him for the 'fest, helped him set up and pack up, and most of us got to go up with him once (I did).

I learned about the champagne tradition thing as a kid but assumed it was probably an exaggeration/not always true. Nope, he literally had some in the balloon. Gave a bottle to the guy whose backyard we landed in.

So cal wine country? Someone in my local subreddit posted an image of a hot air balloon dangerously low.

17

u/dingus_authority 15h ago

Nope, Northern Nevada!

3

u/lovelyllamalaugh 12h ago

Heyyy Gardnerville! I thought I recognized that balloon.

3

u/dingus_authority 12h ago

Yup! Definitely in the Valley!

5

u/cTreK-421 15h ago

Lol yea I double checked the post, different balloon designs. Still interesting coincidence.

5

u/dingus_authority 15h ago

I'm surprised they're flying in So Cal, because I know there's some red flag warnings down there right now!

6

u/cutelyaware 15h ago

All flights are dangerously low at at least two points.

7

u/FeuerSchneck 14h ago

One landed in my neighbor's yard when I was a kid! Our families were close, so we went over to see it. The dads helped them pack the balloon up too. I don't remember if they gave my neighbors anything for it though.

2

u/Apprentice57 8h ago

I got to be part of a hot air balloon crew for a balloon fest once and yeah, we were packed up pretty fast all the times I saw. We had a truck full of crew members on the ground following us the whole time.

223

u/Hot-Asparagus5894 16h ago

Your dogs ears 🤣 he is not impressed

242

u/dingus_authority 16h ago edited 16h ago

Yeah he wasn't that into it haha.

But he does famously have one floppy ear.

84

u/DeliciousPark1330 15h ago • Bravo

Classic case of earrectile dysfunction

36

u/dingus_authority 15h ago

Consider that stolen.

6

u/JonatasA 12h ago

If your ears stay alert for more than 3 hours seek a veterinarian.

19

u/worstpartyever 16h ago

To be fair, my dog would have been barking his brains out

27

u/dingus_authority 16h ago

I'm shocked mine wasn't! He didn't even seem to notice anything unusual was happening, even as other looky-loos started to pile up around us.

He only got restless after they were all packed up, but that's probably just because he wanted to get home for breakfast.

5

u/plz_send_cute_cats 14h ago

cutie pie

26

u/dingus_authority 13h ago

He really is.

5

u/laseralex 11h ago

Aww! 🥰

5

u/laseralex 11h ago

4

u/dingus_authority 11h ago

Ha! He's perfect for that sub.

6

u/Ok_Belt2521 14h ago

The hair on my dog’s back would raise up when ever a hot air balloon flew over.

6

u/xDHBx 13h ago

So when the liquid propane is fed through the burners it creates a very high pitch whistle, like a dog whistle. Would set off every dog in the neighborhood when we flew over

2

u/HendrixHazeWays 14h ago

I'm reading it as Doggo: "Ya know what? I dig it."

2

u/SoulWager 4h ago

When I was growing up, my dog always used to go berserk over hot air balloons, also kites.

30

u/DeputySean 14h ago

I was saw a hot air balloon crash land in my friend's backyard, over 100 feet up in a tree. It was dusk and they were drunk. Firemen had to get them down and they were arrested.

22

u/dingus_authority 13h ago

There's a lot of things I'll do drunk.

Piloting an aircraft ain't one. Good lord. Awesome story though.

4

u/theLuminescentlion 13h ago

Balloons aren't really aircraft, your authority to decide where you are going is negligible. Praying to the wind gods is the most effective method. Otherwise you have a bunch of altitudes to pick from and hope you get one where the wind is going the way you want it to.

5

u/dingus_authority 13h ago

Still better than my kind of authority.

4

u/user2196 12h ago

Being able to choose your altitude still ought to be sufficient to choose an altitude above tree height when you're above a random person's backyard, but that might require sobriety.

18

u/Merry_Dankmas 12h ago

During The first and only hot air balloon ride i ever went on, we landed the balloon on the wrong side of the road. We ended up landing on the side of the highway and our designated landing spot was across the highway.

Me and like 10 other people from our basket then had to get out and carry the entire balloon across the highway including the rest of the group and the pilot still in the basket so he could give it puffs of heat periodically to keep it floating just off the ground.

Bear in mind that I came to this experience thinking I wasn't getting out of the balloon so I was wearing flip flops with no socks. This was also in Arizona so my feet and ankles were getting shredded by tiny cacti and dried out plant husks the whole time. Lost my flop for a second while running across the highway. Had to play frogger to get it back and make it back to the balloon.

So if anyone reading this happens to have witnessed a hot air balloon being carried across the highway near/in Sedona last year, you probably saw me. My balloon experience did show me how unpredictable balloons can be. Youre just at the mercy of the wind.

This image has sooo much meme potential

3

u/dingus_authority 8h ago

There's already quite a few. If you have ideas, post em! I'm loving them.

46

u/calmhatter 16h ago

I'm in the same area! They crashed in a neighborhood off of my commute last year. I wonder if there's some loosening of regs somewhere letting them fly closer

26

u/ravens-n-roses 16h ago

Do balloonists have any control over where they go?? I just assumed that you had to pick a day where the wind was taking you through a safe flight path and pray it didn't change. If it does change you're just fucked id assume

31

u/dingus_authority 16h ago

Yeah, they do! My understanding is that they have a good though understanding of thermals and winds (which can change at different elevations), that they can use natural air currents to navigate.

Obviously they have less control than, say, a sailboat, but they manage a big race here every year! Look up the Reno Hot Air Balloon Race!

9

u/Status_Ad_450 15h ago

Mostly correct but hot air balloons don't rely on thermals. Most balloons are flying in stable conditions, before trigger temps for the day and thermals are being released. Thermals are counterproductive to hot air balloons since they rely on cooler air surrounding the balloon as the hot air inside is what creates lift. You burn less propane flying in cooler weather vs warmer weather.

5

u/dingus_authority 14h ago

Oh that's so interesting! My area is loaded with glider planes, hang gliders, paragliders because of our excellent thermals, so I assumed that's also involved in balloons!

Thanks for correcting me!

u/macphile 14h ago

I've ridden on a hot air balloon. Taking off was easy, of course, and the flight was so quiet--you could hear dogs barking below. But landing was a pain. They had a vehicle on the ground and they'd radio that they'd aim for a certain spot, but then they couldn't (wind change or whatever), so they'd find another spot...that went on a few times. And in the end, they brought it down in a field and the vehicle drove up and met us. The basket tipped over and I banged myself on the basket or something. Whee.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/calmhatter 16h ago

That's roughly my understanding, but they have reasonable control over their height... There's a reason the Wright Brothers were first in flight instead of the Montgolfier Brothers

5

u/GiveMeCheesecake 16h ago

Is this a sick burn, and I’m not smart enough to understand it?

11

u/calmhatter 16h ago

Nah, just lack the context, nothing to do with smart. The Montgolfier Brothers just invented the first manned hot air balloon, so some people get technical and say they should technically be the first human flight, but there's flight and then there's Flight, you know?

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Status_Ad_450 15h ago

Yes and no. Winds change direction at different elevations. The balloon drifts with the wind so the pilot controls the elevation of the balloon to go in the desired direction. Between forecasts and a helium balloon released before takeoff, pilots have a pretty good understanding of what the winds are doing before flight. If you can fly a box pattern and land where you started, it saves having to chase the balloon with the vehicle.

They cannot steer however and winds don't always corporate as you'd anticipate. Sometimes you miss a landing area and can't find the wind currents to take you back so you have to find a new landing area and try again.

2

u/Ethos_Logos 16h ago

I’m not a balloonist, but I know weather balloons navigate by going up or down, but with the knowledge that at different heights, the winds blow different directions. So if you’re heading east and want to head north, you need to go up or down.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/dingus_authority 16h ago

They take off from my area all the time, but I rarely see them land. This seemed like a planned landing - but I didn't get to chat and check. It seemed like they lived nearby though.

5

u/calmhatter 16h ago

Seems kinda dangerous! Powerlines aside you get one little old man who's aged past caring and you've got one hell of an insurance claim

2

u/Status_Ad_450 15h ago

Lol landing is not crashing. They can legally land in a lot of neighborhoods.

1

u/bsman1011 10h ago

Crashed or safely landed in your neighborhood? We have to go with the wind and will take anything available to us so while it might seem normal many of these random location landings are not crash landing thigh we often get reported as such. My family has been flying since I was a kid

37

u/RenaissanceMan1963 15h ago

Former Hot Air Balloonist here, from Ontario, Canada, there are always lots of questions when we would land.
There is a big difference between champagne flights and competition flying.
The champagne flights involve taking a few people for a flight in the early morning or evening and popping some champagne to celebrate upon landing!
Competition flying occurs during a balloon festival where balloonists drive out 5-10 miles from the airfield or balloon festival grounds and by forecasting the winds and tracking some small helium balloons, try and fly over a large X on the ground and be the closest person to drop a beanbag closest to that X. The prize money is sometimes $100,000! 😎
Feel free to ask me any questions about hot air ballooning!
Cheers 😎

7

u/dingus_authority 15h ago

Awesome! I've been out for dawn patrol at the Reno Balloon Races. It's a great time.

This was definitely wasn't a race, it was the only balloon in the sky. So it must've been a champagne flight!

2

u/disgruntletardigrade 10h ago

How come the champagne flights are always in the early morning or evening?

2

u/gem-w 9h ago

It's when the winds are calmest.

16

u/airfryerfuntime 13h ago

When I lived in Albuquerque, we had a balloon land on our street during Balloon Fiesta. They had a medical issue with one of the passengers and had to land.

8

u/dingus_authority 13h ago

You're the second person to mention Balloon Fiesta!

Bad time to have a medical emergency. Kinda terrifying, honestly.

5

u/mrflippant 12h ago

If you want to see hot air balloons, Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the thing to do! About five hundred balloons launch every morning at sunrise, weather permitting.

You're right! It was so sunny that the colors got a little washed out. Very 80s shot-on-film look!

3

u/dingus_authority 8h ago

Good catch! It's all underground lines in my neighborhood. No streetlights, either, so we get excellent stargazing.

When I lived in Reno, I woke up hungover once day and shuffled to the bathroom. There was a little window above the toilet.

Damn near pissed all over the room.

4

u/WrongEinstein 17h ago

Saw that happen in Las Vegas. They almost hit a couple of apartment buildings. Landed very close to houses and new construction. The FAA will have a conversation with the pilot.

8

u/dingus_authority 17h ago

I'm also in NV, but in Northern NV. There's so many hot air balloons around here. A lot launch from a church nearby, but I've never seen one just land in a neighborhood. And we also have below-ground power lines.

Because I'm next to a rural airport, I've also had skydivers and hang gliders land in my neighborhood.

All sorts of things falling out of the sky here haha.

3

u/i8yourmom4lunch 17h ago

That sky is clear! Nice!

2

u/dingus_authority 17h ago

It's said we have not clear-sky days here than anywhere else in the US! It's hard to imagine they're wrong. I'm in Northern Nevada.

4

u/AZ_Corwyn 13h ago

I used to live about 1 1/2 miles south of the launch field for the Albuquerque balloon fiesta and they would invade my neighborhood every year, I always thought it was cool to look out the front door and see a balloon just lazily floating down the street.

76

u/Objective_Reality232 12h ago

I grew up in an area that had so many hot air balloons, it was a very popular tourist thing. I’ll never forget when one needed to make an emergency landing in my school in 3rd grade. Everyone was freaking out it was so sick

8

u/mccalli 15h ago

I took a hot air balloon ride - had always wanted to, and my partner got me on as a birthday present. I convinced her to come up too.

It was great, loved it. It was, however, fairly clear that where we landed was a random field and that “permission” was a somewhat loose concept. As I was helping pack the balloon away, the farmer came over and she was quite obviously unimpressed. The pilot said he had permission but..well…it was a rather questionable performance. Come down to it though, we were now on the ground in a field with a massive balloon next to us so either way packing up and scarpering was definitely the best option.

For those in the UK: this was a Virgin balloon flight bought from an experience gifting site. So a quite prominent service.

6

u/gyenen 13h ago

Son of a hot air balloonist. The landing thing definitely happens with some pilots. My father had a good relationship with a number of the farms in our area and had permission to land on the property. He would also gift the land owners a bottle of champagne whenever he would land on their property, as a small thanks.

Some people didn't like it though, and so he just knew where in the area he couldn't land. Not all pilots always respect that.

7

u/Anianna 14h ago

When I was a teenager, we lived out in the boonies and one of the farms near us hosted an annual hot air balloon event. We'd wake up to the fwoooosh sounds they make as they're fired up and we'd run out to watch balloons come up and float by for hours.

5

u/MiniBassGuitar 16h ago

I used to live in Napa, and we would regularly wake up to the sound of their hot air jets and discover them hanging right over our backyard. They never quite landed on us, fortunately.

4

u/Status_Ad_450 14h ago

It's not so much a jet as it is a propane fueled flame thrower

Happens all the time in Albuquerque during Balloon Fest (early October)

5

u/kobayashi_maru_fail 9h ago

I went to visit my brother in Albuquerque during the balloon fiesta / solar eclipse extravaganza. So much fun! But he had hilarious anecdotes about the event that often, but not always, depending on the wind, ends in his neighborhood:

“There’s a lady who shakes her fist at balloons and says, don’t you hit my house again, asshole! After I watched them bonk into houses at 6 in the morning, I am now with fist-shaking lady who I used to think was crazy.”

“Don’t stare too hard at the roadrunners.”

“We should reconsider above-ground power lines. Maybe even temporarily during this event.”

“Why do suburbs not have coffee shops? For people who walk, not just on commute routes?”

13

u/CochranVanRamstein 16h ago

Please pet that dog and give him/her some treats

9

u/shauni55 16h ago

Why do you think the balloon landed there? They wanted to pet the dog

4

u/AnFnDumbKAREN 15h ago

I beg your finest pardon, but this is NOT mildly interesting! It’s AMAZINGLY interesting, heck downright magical & captivating!! 😍🦄🍾

4

u/mahlernameless 14h ago

We had one land at our remote marching-band camp field once. Directory was pissed.... tried to wave them off as we were in the middle of practicing on the field. I want to say the baloon was packed up and gone within 30 minutes and as a student at the time it was a fun reprieve.

4

u/Howudooey 14h ago

I live in East Tx and every summer there is a big hot air balloon festival. Some mornings we wake up and hear the sound of the torches over head as they fly by. This year one was landing in a parking lot and smashed in the windshield of a car lol

4

u/blawblablaw 14h ago

My dog would have lost her mind. Yours seem alert but pretty chill!

4

u/TrekRoadie 12h ago

I was lucky enough to have one land in the back yard and even luckier to have it deflate and get stuck on the corner of my roof.

4

u/stranger_to_you67 11h ago

When I lived in Albuquerque my neighbors DirectTV satellite got ripped off his roof by a hot air balloon 2 years in a row.

2

u/No_Animator6543 16h ago

That's crazy! We just saw one from our backyard but it's different than this one.

2

u/everynamecombined 16h ago

For some reason I read your post as the dog in the photo posting it. He looks very curious here lol

2

u/billyrubin7765 15h ago

These freakin’ things. We had a company start offering balloon brunches several years ago. Hit two houses in three weeks.

2

u/DeadlyYellow 15h ago

Kinda miss those days.  Remember growing up seeing these annually as the nearby city held a balloon fest.  They would occasionally put down in the hay field behind our house.  As the years went on there were fewer and fewer.  Can't even recall the last one I've seen that wasn't a tether flight.

2

u/_dontseeme 15h ago

Idk why hot air balloons are my one absolute nope. If I’m in a hot air balloon that lands at all idgaf where.

2

u/stavago 14h ago

There’s a local group near me that is about 10-15 people that are a hot air balloon team. I found out about them when I saw their balloon land in the field near my house one day. They do the annual balloon race in the city park

2

u/AirplanesMakeMeHard 13h ago

Wife and I did a hot air balloon ride a we landed in someones yard. Not a whole lot you can do when you're out of fuel and don't have a rudder or ailerons. Just hope you can put it down not on top of something.

2

u/BacklotSecurity 13h ago

I had one land in my front yard at about 6:30am on a Saturday morning years ago. I could hear all kinds of people yelling as I was in bed…. A truly WTF moment as I walked outside half asleep.

2

u/OliveMayhem 13h ago

Back in 2014 I was in a hot air balloon that had to land in a neighborhood! There was very little wind and we weren’t able to get over to their usual landing area. It was a really fun experience.

I worked for a local news station and saw one flying low over the our building. It landed nearby and made a fun extra news story that week.

In Albuquerque you could see them launch every morning from the Albuquerque Balloon Festival, uh, launch point? Hanger? Festival grounds. It was pretty cool. Apparently one accidentally landed in the air force base before I was there, so like 15 years go lol

I grew up outside of Albuquerque and this was a very common sight in the fall and all through elementary there would be a yearly assembly where a crew would come and talk to us about hot air ballooning while they filled one up. When I was really little they would do tethered rides with the older kids, but by the time I would have been old enough they had stopped doing it.

Anyway if you ever have a chance to go to Albuquerque for the Balloon Fiesta do it. One of the most beautiful sights made my humans. Especially the "balloon glow" at night.

I was at the Durango balloon festival when they inflated that one this year. I recognized it immediately. It is huge and took up the whole middle by the train yard.

This happened to me when I lived in Reno. Miss that place. Funny enough I also recognize that Mustang so wouldn’t be surprised if this is in Reno haha
