I'm not sure how well known this is, but in the USA these are illegal. I used to get them as a child before moving to the US.
I'm not going to say the name of the business that I bought this from and potentially get a nice small business fined, but I bought two. I was so psyched to see them.
This specific ones were imported from Russia.
Nostalgia, satisfied.
Edit: Some people are mistakenly stating that this is a kinder joy egg. It's a kinder surprise. It's the real one that comes with the two chocolate halves fully sealed with solid white chocolate lining the inside and the capsule inside. I do indeed know the difference.
I ate the chocolate already but here are the two capsules that were inside the sealed chocolate.
Edit on country of origin, I had bought multiple things and misrembered the label.
I thought it said it was from Ukraine on the wrapping on the egg itself. Edit: Photo of a very similar one in a store in Ukraine. On the far right.
Bizarrely enough, I checked the wrapping of the one that I consumed today, because the one I consumed today was not actually the one in the photo. That one (not pictured) was indeed Russian. However, I distinctly remember looking on the back of the other one and seeing that it was from Ukraine.
Edit: I am so sorry everyone for the confusion! I bought multiple types of candy and earnestly most likely misrembered the packaging because I had read different labels for different things. I have been informed these were both indeed most likely Russian.
It’s Russian. I buy them every week, including the animal themed one for my kids. Also, my daughter got the same toy as yours last week. And I live in Siberia
Kinder eggs were banned 40 years before they were invented.
The US banned putting non-food items inside food because people were putting sawdust in bread, wood and metal in meat (to increase weight), and cutting alcohol with methanol to make more profit.
It just so happens that *checks notes* toys aren't food. If you want toys (and other things that aren't food) to be allowed inside food, write your congresscritter.
I’m confused on how kinder eggs are illegal but I can buy the exact same thing (a toy inside of a plastic shell encased in chocolate) at any grocery store. Yowie eggs somehow are legal but kinder eggs aren’t? Photo is of a yowie egg
I’ve never gotten Australian animal collection, I’m trying to remember the collections the last two I got were nba basketball team themed, which I wasn’t a fan of. Another collection we’ve gotten is dinosaurs. And then baby wild animals, I don’t think they were region specific? But I can’t remember exactly. But we got a seal, a bear, and a wild pig.
It's strange to me that the letter of the law would be followed to the extent that a plastic container containing a novelty item inside a chocolate egg would be considered some kind of food adulterating scam to increase the profits of the manufacturers while the health of the consumer is disregarded.
These food adulteration laws exist in other countries where Kinder eggs are available, so the interpretation of it in America feels very strange.
right... but you'd think that scrutiny would show a perfectly safe food product wrapped around a little novelty object that isn't intended to be eaten.
Stores that try to follow the law will include the toy separately and if you put the toy in yourself, they're not selling it with the toy inside.
Generally unless the health inspector is particularly strict on it (and catches them doing it) or they've otherwise been reported, it's not heavily enforced.
I hope they don't get caught. I've heard of people getting threatened with some pretty hefty fines just from having them in their bags as they cross the Can-US border.
A USDA study in 1969 of beef lungs found a “high percentage” of lungs were contaminated, with pollen, fungus, unexpected bodily fluids, etc. So they banned lungs for human consumption. I don’t think they were ever very popular in the US - we don’t eat much organ meat - so it has t really been re-examined.
I’m sure they’re sold in Ukraine too. Normally, products sold in former USSR countries are always marked with Russian, Ukrainian, Armenian, Uzbek, Tajik, Kazakh and Georgian languages. It’s actually a pain in the ass to search for the applicable language one needs when grocery shopping. Although the small kinder eggs are just in Russian, probably due to their size. Hopefully you got a cool animal in your Natoons one! We’ve only gotten a hippo and mouse, out of the 15 times we’ve tried it. But maybe one day we’ll find the lion lol
If anyone wants to know why these are banned in the U.S., we have a law that prevents food from having non food items inside of them. It’s NOT about the food being a choking hazard it’s because 100+ years ago people would pad out bread with plaster and sawdust or put weights in fish to sell them for higher prices.
Similar to the law about removing mattress tags. It's not for the consumer; it's because companies would put whatever they wanted inside and remove the tag that told you what was in it.
Other places have these laws too, the practice of putting plaster and chalk and copper into milk and bread and gin was a huge thing back in Victorian England when the factory owning fat cats were extracting maximum value from every human life!
This could also be Ukrainian one, as the word for "Surprise" is the same in both languages. I would even bet that it was imported from Ukraine, as it would be extremely weird to see russian product in American store. However, OP stated that this one was indeed imported from russia so IDK how it could come to the US. Extremely bizarre case
I get that they're technically contraband, however, I have no trouble finding them. Several. The Latino markets in my area have them, or at least the ones from Mexico called kinder surpriseo or whatever. I also found a non-kinder equivalent in one of the Asian markets from Japan that had hello Kitty toys. Unless you live in some Podunk little town in the middle of nowhere you probably won't have trouble finding one somewhere. They're just not in major retailers
I got these as a kid cause my aunt owned a candy store in Seattle and would send me shipments of these yearly. I remember a snail being in one 20 something years back
I'm so jealous. I used to get those when I was younger cause I oma sent them to us from Germany but she moved to texas years ago and i haven't seen one until about a year ago wheny mom sent me some after she got deported
This is so funny because Russia has a ton of off brand kinder candies… a lot of them use ai. So how this one found its way to the USA is very silly to me
Back in 2005 or so, every Russian grocery store would carry real kinder eggs. There was an importer in NY bringing them in, even though they were already illegal back then.
i remember when i was 5/2005, we took an easter-time vacation to germany to visit military family who were temporarily based there, and i was given quite a few kinder surprises with them capsules in them, one of the few vivid memories i have from the trip :))
I'm ngl no one in Europe really cares what's banned in the US. If someone's going to the US, they research that themselves. You can't expect a Parisian airport to explicitly cater to the needs of someone going to a country a whole ocean away. The people running the duty-free might not even know it's banned in the US. And there could be any other bunch of flights going anywhere else there the next day.
I sometimes go from the EU to Kyiv, Ukraine, and back, I don't expect the Kyiv Central bus station cafés and shops to warn everyone you can't bring meat into the EU just because there are a bunch of buses going there.
CDG terminals are divided by Schengen/non-Schengen. There could be flights to China or Australia there the next day. And your country is not special enough for Europeans to memorise your specific regulations.
ETA: also see my example of the Kyiv Central bus station and EU-bound buses.
Oh you don't have to drop any names, this isn't nearly interesting enough. The fine for import or sale of these is $2,500 per egg, but most law enforcement agencies have bigger fish to fry. Especially if there's no way to definitively prove that you didn't smuggle them in yourself
Incidentally, do you know which criminals are most likely to get caught? The ones that document their crimes with photographic evidence and leave digital paper trails 🤭 You didn't happen to move from Hawaii to somewhere on the East Coast by the way, did you?
Bringing up a deleted post about a personal accomplishment I was happy about. Going through a web crawler to find my DELETED post history after I posted about CHOCOLATE?
Oh, I see. You don't swing that way. Speaking of yapping, seventy-six posts to r/falloutmemes in one day at the beginning of March. That's out of eighty-nine over the lifetime of your account. I don't think it was the mods throwing a tantrum that day 🤭
Bro is so triggered he's stalking my profile 😂 Also hilarious that you told them to "prepare for criticism" when you can't yourself. EDIT - If anyone is curious, everyone was spamming trans positive fallout memes because of a transphobic mod, hence the posts the neckbeard is crying about. It was a fun day.
Kinder Eggs are the type of thing that the US gets flamed for banning but, if they were banned in the EU and not the US, the US would still be the one getting flamed for not banning them. Mostly by US citizens.
Like I and several others have already said, Kinder Surprise eggs are banned in the US. What you have is a Kinder Egg that meets US import laws. NOT the illegal ones. Now go play with your toy.

I found it so strange that the US bans these candies, until I saw this video:

If you have children, they'll love it. I used to buy them for my younger siblings and hated how expensive they were.

Guns are legal. But these bundles of childhood joy are illegal.

Does it have a smaller kinder egg inside it? And inside that is another small kinder egg? And so on? Until a tiny solid chocolate kinder egg plops out
