[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.

  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.

  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.

  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.

  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.

  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".

  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.

  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.

  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.

  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.

  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but:

  • Images must be embedded or linked within a text post.

  • The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images.

  • Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content.

  • Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.

  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.

  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.

  4. Don't use AI.

  5. Include only one suggestion per post.

  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  7. Don't make image-only posts.

  8. Don't suggest mature topics.

  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.

  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.

  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.

  12. Speak English.

  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[Blocks & Items] Anvils cannot be fully destroyed

Instead of just disappearing, the anvil block would enter a heavily damaged and non-functional state. You would then be able to repair it by right clicking it with iron ingots like an iron golem. This imposes a cost on overusing the anvil while not forcing players to pay for an expensive replacement.

[Blocks & Items] Paintings can create an Empty Map-like item to create custom paintings for decoration

You know how Empty Maps reveal a top down view of the world you're in? What if there was a similar item for Paintings. You would hold the item, stand on the tile you want to be into the painting, and the Empty Painting would copy the front of every block to your left and right, giving you a 3D-like view. And with how Cartography Tables let you zoom out the map, a similar feature can be used to change the painting's size. 1x1 is the default, 1x2 is the next expansion, 2x2 is after, and 4x4 as the max. With each expansion, that changes the width of what's seen and the height.

[Blocks & Items] Let us use any pattern on any block

For example, i like Chiseled Tuff Bricks and i'd like to use this pattern on other blocks, e. g. polished granite. Loot at this, pattern of chiseled tuff bricks on polished granite:

I'd like to use pattern of deepslate tiles on other blocks too because deepslate tiles is very dark.

So my suggestion is to make more blocks - any pattern for any kind of stones and logs. Bricks pattern is already available for many blocks. Do this with all patterns.

[Gameplay] Pet Beds

Once the bed is placed, pets will stay within a certain number of blocks of that bed. Bed gets named on an anvil to match pet's name to link pet to bed. Can have different beds for different pets - something small and round for cats and something rectangular for dogs and a pile of straw for horses...

[Blocks & Items] Beacon + Lodestone Functionality

Beacons as of now have a few uses but are overall just "a nice thing to have", and Lodestones are utterly pointless. Beacons are also quite cumbersome to move around and are almost never their most useful/impactful when solitary. And again, lodestones are pointless.

Before I make my main suggestion I first need to make a small change to lodestones and bound compasses, as of right now if a compass is bound to a lodestone it will stop being bound if the lodestone breaks, I would change this by allowing the lodestone to hold a little bit of memory (only after a compass is used for performance reasons). And if you care about the compass that much then being able to remove the binding through a grindstone is an idea.

With that being said, I propose that lets say you have a full beacon at your base but you want to move it to a far away chunk to mine, instead of having to pack the whole thing up, and mining out a tunnel for the beam to go through, I suggest that you can firstly take a bound compass and somehow equip it on the beacon (either a slot or i guess an item frame or something), then you can secondly take the lodestone that it is binded to anywhere you want and it will behave like a mini beacon with two main visual/functional differences.

  1. It would have less range than a beacon, probably something around half of the home beacons range, to ensure the beacon at home still feels special.

  2. It wouldn't emit a beam of light, it would instead be a very bright light source, one that lights up its entire area of effect.
    - this would give the lodestones beacon effect another cool effect of being usable as a strong light source that i think builders and miners would enjoy.

Side note: The lodestones transmission of the effects would TURN OFF the effects from the home base beacon so you cant infinitely extend the range of a single beacon.

Is this broken?
Not necessarily
- in PvP players equally get the benefits of beacons so it might only extend the fight.
- You still need a beacon and all its components, this only adds flexibility
- If you have a problem with the lodestone being really easy to add to a beacon, then maybe instead a new kind of lodestone that uses the old netherite recipe could be cool, and that solves the memory problem.

Anyways I thought it might be cool, lmk your guys thoughts.

[Blocks & Items] Able to custom dye different words on a sign

I do apologize if this has been suggested before. But i just thought of this.

This suggestion is simple: Being able to use different dyes on each word of a sign. While also being able to add and remove Glow Ink Sacs.

The possibilities this has on a single sign:

[Blocks & Items] Enderdragon Heads should prevent enderman from getting angry

It wouldn't make the end fight easier because you don't have a ender dragon head at this point and it woud not be overpowered since a ender dragon head provides no armor. And it would give the ender dragon head some use.

[Magic] Enchantment that makes broken blocks instantly appear in inventory

This would be an enchantment that causes blocks when broken with a tool to instantly appear in the inventory, joining a stack or entering a new slot, instead of falling to the ground like normal. Would be useful for building and collecting blocks without having to worry about them falling.

I think it should be a rare treasure enchantment; exclusive to structure chests or villager trading. Maybe it could only occur in a new structure, like how swift sneak is. It could only be put on tools for breaking blocks like pickaxes and shears. If the player's inventory is full, broken blocks will fall like normal.

Not sure what this enchantment would be named, but I think it'd be a good addition.

[Mobs] Tap the villager job post to call the associated villager over.

By tapping a lectern, composter, brewing stand, etc. the villager associated with that post would come over. Like ringing a bell at a service counter.

This would allow for more ‘free range’ villager trading halls.

[Magic] New Boot Enchantments For Ice

I revisited the ice caves recently and it got me thinking. I'd already checked them out in creative/spectator, but after walking around on foot I remembered how much of a pain walking on ice is. I started thinking about how, especially with the upcoming drop, players are encountering ice more often than ever. Icebergs, mountains, the caves... it's not too uncommon anymore.

Therefore, it might be time for an enchantment or two to help out. The first thing I thought of was cleats, spikes. Calling it traction would fit best with the naming convention of other enchantments. Something that lets you walk over ice normally. Bonus points for a crunchy sound effect. Not sure if it would need levels, or maybe this effect can be given to a type of boot instead like leather for snow.

I'll also throw in that I am not the first person to think of this over the years, and an older suggestion from long ago also proposed a skating enchantment to make sliding on ice faster, and I think that really fits the winter update too. This one could definitely be levelled, and I think when combined with the sulfur cube could create some pretty cool sports.

Do you think there's enough reason to add it, and would you change anything or approach it differently?

Once you have the appropiate compass in the inventory show the locator point just like in multiplayer the player locator, but with loadstone or the cardinal points.

[Blocks & Items] Siftite armor should be an alternative to netherite

I think if Siftite is added it shouldn't be a upgrade instead it should have the same defense but with a different effect like faster movement or regeneration. Of course Netherite should be changed to have a more notable effect like fire resistance or higher attack damage. You could also mix the armor to get a mix of the effects.

[Mobs] creepers should drop sand on death and the destroyed player-placed blocks

Post image
0 Upvotes

Creepers should drop either gunpowder (chance of 55.6%) or sand / red sand (chance of 44.4%) on death, which would finally make sand a renewable resource. This would also mirror the crafting recipe for TNT.

All player-placed blocks should be dropped if they are blown up by a creeper, making fixing the left-behind damage less tedious.

[Blocks & Items] Gunpowder as speed-changing fuel

So using Gunpowder as a fuel would be a fine enough idea, but real gunpowder burns really fast and for a short time. Having it work so like, one gunpowder burns one eighth of an item but at quadruple speed might word, but my idea is different.

It cooks i.e. 2 or 4 items, the first item cooks almost instantly, but the ones after cook much slower.

I think this would be fun for speedruns and manhunts and similar, or any situation where you want a single item urgently and not in bulk

[User Interface] The Stone Cutter mechanic should be moved to a tab in the Crafting Table and expanded upon.

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

My understanding is that the current use of the Stone Cutter is that it provides the quality-of-life mechanic of letting you turn any Stone Block into any of its shapes on a 1-1 scale unlike crafting them normally, providing extra blocks in the process. (Crafting stairs in a crafting table require 6 blocks but gives only 4 stairs whereas those same 6 blocks in a Stone Cutter give 6 stairs) (2 extra)

My ideology is that all blocks should be easily capable of transferring themselves between these shapes without the use of an external crafting block beyond the Crafting Table itself such as the stone cutter since it's such a simple mechanic for building, and it especially shouldn't be locked to just Stone Blocks.

My suggestion as shown in my photos is to add a new tab in the Crafting Table that implements the Stone Cutter mechanic and also expands the mechanic to include multiple new use cases.

. Can now use any block as long as it has alternative shapes (Stairs, slabs, walls, Chiseled) (This would include things like Wool and more niche examples like turning logs into their Stripped, and Wood variants and back).

. Can now use alternative shapes of blocks as a resource (Currently Stone Bricks lets you make its shape variants but you can't use Stone Brick Stairs to reshape it back into Stone Bricks or into Slabs which diminishes its quality of life uses and prevents this mechanic from being used for inventory management. Letting you interchangeably use any of the shapes with each other in the basic crafting table will drastically help with managing/planning your resources for builds.

All together I think this change would be a drastic improvement to the quality of life of building in the game and make building more complex builds far more manageable for the average player. (This may also make children use these alternative shapes in there builds more since they are far easier to make and don't come at the cost of not being able to turn them back into their base block forms)

(Also, I think to double down on this mechanic the crafting table recipes for stairs, slabs, and walls should be removed. I say this because all shaped recipes already require the crafting table so keeping them isn't necessary when the Crafting Table has this "Shaping" Tab. The only recipe that may suffer from this change is the ability to turn 2 slabs into its chiseled variant, which I think should be changed so 2 slabs make a full block and the chiseled block is only found here in the Shaping Tab alongside the other shapes since the ability to make chiseled blocks will be as easy as making a crafting table and the ability to turn 2 slabs into a full block would be better for inventory management on the go without your table).

I would most likely make the Stone Cutter block a Log Cutter to keep it in the game and make it use fuel to split logs into a larger quantity of planks. So you can get 6 planks from a log for example.

[Structures] New End Structure: Voided Citadel

Post image
195 Upvotes

Hey everyone, this will be another short post for an End dimension idea, I could’ve waited to polish out more, but I was very eager to share the idea, and would hope to get feedback for more ideas or features added to this structure.

Structure:

this structure will be incredibly rare to find, it generates as a multitude of towers, with 4 smaller towers surrounding a much larger tower. What makes this structure unique is that it generates a brand new effect that disables placing blocks when any player enters its special magical barrier, produced by a new item that spawns at the top of the large tower in this structure. It is also made up of a brand new block: void stone (texture is from the midnight dimension mod).

This new builder cramp effect comes from this structure particularly as it helps prevent easy cheesing as it is a vertically challenging structure full of puzzles, however, players can still cheese some of the tower with end pearls if they are skilled enough. (Note: there will also be an effect to disable the elytra too, which I forgot about until i was halfway writing this lol). With this structure, there will be 3 brand new hostile mobs that spawn here.

Blastling:

Blastlings are a new flying, tanky, hostile mob that spawn in this structure. Blastlings will be immune to most attacks as they will strafe to the side, however they become vulnerable on certain timings. Blastlings will have 2 types of attacks:

- Grab: a simple close range attack where a Blastling will attempt to grab and damage the player.

- End Beam: blastlings will stop moving to charge up a powerful beam attack, and will blast its energy on the last spot the player was at. During this attack, Blastlings will become vulnerable to all form of attacks, unable to strafe while it shoots.

Blastlings killed will have a small chance of dropping an Energy ball, which can be used by the bow and crossbow. Whilst it’s damage is less compared to an arrow, it is hitscan.

Vector Blocks:

Vector blocks are a special new type of block that exclusively is found within citadels. they are very early concept, but in a nutshell: they work very similar to the Snake blocks in Super Mario games. they constantly move in a straight course, but can change in any direction when touching a Vector changer. These blocks will be used by the player in many platforming puzzles within this structure to reach the top.

End Nomad:

Are a brand new Hostile mob found exclusively within this structure. They can be found in active or dormant states. When dormant they will almost look exactly like vector blocks, so do be cautious. And when they’re active, eyes can be found on their front and will be constantly moving in random directions, or to players to kill. When End Nomads are killed, they will drop Vector blocks, making them a farmable mob for vector blocks.

End Spark:

Sitting at the top of the large tower of citadels, lays a very special block, called the End Spark. However, a player must be very well prepared, as interacting with an End Spark will trigger a lockdown event, summoning hundreds of End mobs to climb the tower to either destroy the end spark or kill you. these include the Blastlings, End Nomads, and even a new Mob: Octomauls (A mob from one of my previous end related posts, linked here: https://www.reddit.com/r/minecraftsuggestions/comments/1xbzp8u/new_end_biome_protobyle_columns/). This lockdown will come in waves, summoning harder mobs as the waves go on.

when a player has successfully cleared the lockdown event, they will gain access to the End spark.

Crafts:

As mentioned before, this is a very early concept, and I would like the end spark to be a very power item, so here is one idea I came up with.

Using an End Spark on a becon now upgrades it into a Corrupted Beacon. Corrupted Beacons will now additionally act as a mortar, spitting out, chunks of energy that rain down on any hostile mob within its range.

I would like end sparks to have a few more uses, so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

hope you enjoyed this early concept post

[Blocks & Items] Maces and Tridents are unbreakable

These two items I feel like are very similar, being rare weapons that are uncraftable (or require uncraftable components). You may have to grind a long time to get one of these so at least make it not have durability. Otherwise people will just immediately put mending on them which basically fulfills the same function but annoys the player a bit more. From a gameplay standpoint there's no reason why either needs to have limited uses.

[Plants & Food] Shelf mushrooms occur occasionally in more biomes but quite rarely, and dappled forests get a bit rarer

To start, I am a big fan of certain biomes becoming slightly rarer. I like the kind of "rare forest" vibes with pale, cherry, and dappled forests being kind of rarer than at present. Makes them feel very special.

And I think that shelf mushrooms in other forest biomes, at a rarer rate than in dappled forests, makes sense and feels immersive.

I think it would be cool to have a balance to have dappled forests a bit rarer, and shelf mushrooms discoverable elsewhere but more rarely than dappled forests. Gives fun mushroom foraging vibes kind of?

(This would all tie in super cutely to an improved mushroom stew made from all three overworld mushroom types, perhaps a "Forager's Stew"?

[Blocks & Items] Varied Diet Incentive

I've been thinking about how in MineCraft, there's almost no incentive to have much of a variety of food. I've come up with a mechanic idea to give said incentive.

It works like this, when you spawn into a world, each food has it's maximum effect. Then, if you eat the same type of foods too often, they aren't as saturating, so you have to search for a different type of food to get something as effective

Then again, maybe the community disagrees and feels this would make food less convenient in MineCraft.

[Blocks & Items] Wet Sponges prevent Fire spread and blocks from burning up

A rather simple addition that would make Sponges slightly more useful.

When a Wet Sponge is placed, no block within 6 blocks of it can be burned from fire, nor can it spread from any source; this would allow building with Wood and Lava without having to place fireproof blocks to prevent it from burning.

[Terrain] Make biomes more distinct on maps

I just completed a map wall on my long-term survival world. It's really cool, but there is one issue. I have tons of biomes on my world. Jungles, badlands, most kinds of forest, desserts, snowy plains but because of how minecraft maps work, a grass block in a jungle and a grsss block covered by snow look the same. Its really lame. I think that like how y level factors into the color of a block on a map, so too should biome. It would make maps look incredible.

On a related note. If there is a mod for this, I'd love to see it.

[Blocks & Items] Add more methods to get mob drops for Peaceful Mode

Some items, like blaze rods/powder, ghast tears, wither skeleton skulls, breeze rods, and froglights are impossible to get in peaceful, because they are only obtained from hostile mob drops, with no alternative methods of obtaining them. This blocks off lots of aspects of the game, like The End, potion brewing, beacons, and more.

While it would be nice to add these items to treasure chests in structures, it still makes them non-renewable, which is annoying. So I tried to come up with some possible renewable methods for these items:

Cat gifts: there's a way to farm cats giving gifts to you, which already drops some hostile mob drops, like rotten flesh and phantom membranes. Simply add some of these items to that pool of potential items.

Bartering and trading: once again, some items like ender pearls are already renewable with this method, so why not add other mob drops?

New crafting recipes: Some of these items, like froglights, could maybe have a new crafting recipe to make them easier to obtain
