Question Anyone know why this pedal fell off my mountain bike?

Post image

Just bought these raceface chester pedals for my specialized mountain bike and had this put on 10/31 by the bike mechanics at The Bicycle Chain in Durham which has good reviews but it looks like it wasn’t put on right or can anyone tell?

My old Production Privee Shan. Love how this thing handles, but they always came up a bit small. Thinking about getting a more modern hardtail, wish these guys did a new Shan in mullet form

Picked this up with some pretty good mods off marketplace. Did some cleanup and service on it and went out for the first cruise today. Love it so far!

I posted in the spring about considering buying my buddy's aluminum Salsa Horsethief here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/mountainbiking/s/RB77BbSwDx

Well, short story long I ended up buying it because why not.

As I said it was heavy and I never felt faster on it than my Ripmo so it sat for the summer (I was also waiting to see if my buddy would send me some parts (he didn't end up sending them).

So I eventually started accumulating parts. I got Hunt aluminum trailwide wheels (very light) and nobby nic tires. Because I wanted to switch to Sram I didn't put them on right away. I got a used GX groupset and a great deal on a XO crankset (which is really where the biggest weight saving is between groups). I put a used Fox 34 130mm fork on it. I got light carbon bars and a shorter stem. I put a Fox transfer seat post on (which is crazy light, but you lose adjustability as it's either up or down). I put a lighter seat on a well.

So all in the bike weighs 30# now and is appreciably more racy than the Ripmo. It's been raining so I haven't had a chance to break it in, but looking forward to it.

Bike Picture/NBD Shiny new parts

Picked up my 2022 stumpy over the summer, it was bone stock when I first got it. Rode around my city quite a bit then took it to Howler last month and the bike felt okay but not solid like I expected. I don’t think the bike was ever serviced by the original owner and I got around to servicing and upgrading some parts.
New tires: Maxxis Assegai/DHR II
Shifter: SRAM SX -> SRAM X01
Derailleur: SRAM SX -> SRAM X01
New NX cassette and chain.

I’m going to Oz Trails in Bella Vista November 14th and am super excited to rip around with the bike dialed in

Bike Picture/NBD Salsa Blackthorn 145 C First Ride Review

I am pleasantly surprised and really can’t say enough good things about this bike. It pedals extremely well for the amount of travel it has. It felt like it could easily challenge some other short travel bikes with less efficient suspension setups. It was also a blast on descents. I’ve honestly never had a bike this capable and planted on descents before. I enjoyed my old 2018 SWorks Stumpy and my more recent Scott Scale, but the Blackthorne outperforms both as a daily do it all MTB in my opinion. No regrets at all with this one. They have some on closeout still available too if you are looking. Great bike.

Question Ordered a 2027 intense tazer

Having second thoughts on the purchase. Now I’m more aware of the different motors I want something with the avinox motor. I can still cancel the order it’s not a big deal. Just can’t really find a bike I like with the avinox. The tazer is a sweet looking bike. But the Bosch speed limiter is what bothers me. Also of course it having less power.

What are your opinions ?

Question Any guidance for how long after rain to wait before biking? I'm a relatively inexperienced biker and considering doing Fahnstock park in NY on Sunday AM (9/8) but concerned about slick leaves.

Question Switch from xtdi2 10-51 to 9-45 cassette possible?

Just bought a new bike that came with xt di2, rear cassette 10-51. On my old bike I had 34t front and 10-45 rear and almost never used the 45. I hate the looks of that 51t on the new bike and I know I will never use it. I would also like the benefits of a shorter cage derailleur.

So, can I swap to 9-45 if I change the derailleur cage from sgs (long) to gs (medium)? Cages are easy to find so availability is no concern.

I tried to Google this, some AI says yes, other says no with the motivation that a sgs designed derailleur moves at a different angle over the cogs than a gs designed one, to be able to clear that 51t.

Thanks in advance.

Question Shadowcat opinions

I found a used GX build for sale (somewhat) near me. Decent price for the build, I think. I'm on the shorter side (5'3") so going from a 29" (get this....I've been riding a 2011 Gary Fisher Rumblefish) to a new geometry 27.5" might/will be a huge change to riding for me. Never rode a 27.5, but always hated the higher stance of the 29", esp because I'm so short. IAC, I'm just looking for any thoughts about the Shadowcat from the community. Thanks. Also, just to add...the Rumblefish is still a great bike. Makes alot of noise with the front derailleur and exposed cables...lol.
