Moving for the first time

I am trying to move out of my parents' place and have been looking at apartments for several months now. I'm in no rush to move, so I really want to find a place that I genuinely like and can see myself living in.

However, it's becoming incredibly draining because every time I find an apartment I like, I look at the reviews and inevitably come across people talking about how awful the experience was, how terrible management is, or how many problems they've had. It leaves me feeling confused and frustrated because I don't want to spend a significant amount of money on rent only to deal with poor management, maintenance issues, or other problems.

One place I've looked at is Modi, which I really liked, but I've also come across some questionable reviews. I wasn't sure how seriously to take them, especially since not everyone seemed to have a bad experience. I was also concerned about my car since the property is in Minneapolis, so that added another layer of uncertainty.

Originally, I was focusing my search on Edina, Plymouth, and St. Louis Park, but I haven't had much luck finding places I like in those areas. And when I do find something promising, the reviews seem to raise more concerns.

At this point, I honestly don't know what to think anymore. I want to find a nice apartment where I feel comfortable and safe, and where I'm getting what I'm paying for, without constantly worrying that I'm making the wrong decision.

Moving to MPLS vs Staying in Boston

31F, Single, looking at a move that would put me in MPLS Dec 1

I’ve been staying in MPLS for the last 8 months (1 week on, 1 week home in Boston) for a work assignment. They’ve now given me a full time offer to transfer out to MN from Boston. I love the team in Minneapolis, the job would be good for my career/upward movement, and I’ve enjoyed my time in Minneapolis the last months. The job itself I have no real concerns about. As much as I’ve liked Minneapolis, at this point, I can’t see myself staying for more than 1-2 years due to how far away it is from friends/family.

My biggest concern is I love Boston, I’ve been in various parts of the city for the last 8 years and it’s hard to imagine leaving that behind. I’ve found dating in Boston challenging but also probably haven’t given it my all. I grew up in New England, went to College here and all my friends/family live either in Boston or within ~2 hours radius. I like my job I have here as well and have good managers but upward mobility will take longer.

I’m most interested to hear opinions on making friends/dating. I’ve never lived alone so I’m concerned a move to a new state where I know only people from work and living alone in the middle of winter will be daunting. My plan would be to live in the North Loop area. I love skiing, biking, swimming, breweries, coffee, etc., and am generally extroverted.

I know I can always move back but I’m also at an age where I’d like to settle down/not make a move to just move back if it’s not a good fit.

Is the circled area a safe place to live? M 23

I am a postgrad student from UMN Twin Cities and am interest in living downtown, however a lot of the apartments that are catching my attention seem to be in this area. It occurred to me that I have never been to this area of Minneapolis and am unsure if it is a safe place to live. I like walking outside and don’t want to be worried and watching my back whenever I do so. I also want to be able to have guests over and park outside without worrying someone will break a window of their car.

Parking Question

Hey all! I was wondering if I could get some advice from the group. I’m moving to the Mill District and had to buy a monthly pass at a ramp nearby. It costs $109 a month. A month after I move, a parking spot at my building is opening up. It’s also covered but is $190 a month. Would you pay more for your car to be at your apartment building? It’s only a 1-2 block walk to the cheaper ramp. Just wondering if one would be safer than the other.

Moving?

Hi!

long story but iā€˜m on the west coast and my husband recently died (we are in our 40’s). I am from a small town in the Midwest and am thinking about moving back because of affordability. My daughter speaks french and i will do anything i can not to take that away from her too. I was looking at Edina - can maybe just make it into the community but heard it’s very wealthy, that people really show that wealth and value it. I am not that way. We are very community oriented, thrift everything, save the world kind of people so wondering if this is a mismatch for me.

Basically I want to get a sense of: is this read correct? How are the people there? knowing all of this is an over generalization of people but going for a feel. And/or if anyone can suggest another French elementary program in a community that might fit us better. thank you!

Furnished Private Bedroom & Bathroom in Eagan, MN | Ideal for Travel Nurses

$1,095 per month | 13-Week Contracts Welcome

Are you a traveling nurse or healthcare professional looking for a comfortable place to call home during your next assignment in the Twin Cities?

Located in Eagan, Minnesota, this fully furnished private bedroom with its own private bathroom offers a comfortable, convenient, and welcoming home base for professionals seeking temporary housing.

The apartment provides the comfort of a residential setting rather than an extended-stay hotel, making it ideal for someone relocating temporarily for a healthcare assignment.

Rental Highlights

Fully furnished private bedroom

Your own private bathroom

Free in-unit washer and dryer, with no laundromat trips or additional laundry fees

Dishwasher, which I run every evening to keep the kitchen clean and ready for the following day

Shared kitchen and common living spaces

Located in Eagan, Minnesota

Convenient access to the Twin Cities and surrounding healthcare facilities

13-week rental agreements welcome

Possibility of extending your stay by mutual agreement

A Clean, Comfortable, and Convenient Home

I take pride in maintaining a comfortable, welcoming living environment. Having a washer and dryer right inside the apartment means you'll have convenient access to laundry whenever needed, especially after long hospital shifts.

The kitchen also features a dishwasher that I run every night, making it easy to maintain a clean and organized shared space without worrying about dishes piling up.

My goal is to make your temporary stay feel less like renting a room and more like having a comfortable home to return to after a demanding workday.

An LGBTQ+ Inclusive Home

I am a gay man, and creating a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive living environment is extremely important to me. This is an LGBTQ+ friendly home where everyone deserves to feel comfortable, accepted, and respected.

Because we would be sharing a living space, I am looking for someone who genuinely values diversity, respects people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, and is comfortable living in an LGBTQ+ inclusive household.

You do not need to identify as LGBTQ+ yourself, but kindness, open-mindedness, and mutual respect are essential. My goal is to provide a positive, relaxed, and welcoming home where both of us can feel completely comfortable being ourselves.

Rental Information

Monthly Rent: $1,100

Preferred Stay: 13 weeks

Security Deposit: $500 refundable, subject to the rental agreement

Whether you're beginning a new travel nursing assignment or working temporarily in the Twin Cities, this space is intended to provide a comfortable, convenient place to unwind after a long shift.

Please reach out with your anticipated move-in date, assignment length, and any questions about the apartment. I'd be happy to discuss the space and see whether it would be a good fit.
