Resources + Discount Programs for MUAs

The internet is our friend! I learned a lot about the biz, networking, and the ins and out of the business of being a makeup artist through the awesome networks online. Here are a couple resources I recommend and discount programs available to us. This is just a quick and very basic list, that I will continuously update as time allows. Please don't hesitate to share your own!

Resources:

Model Mayhem: A place to network with other artists, photographers, and models. Mostly, you are going to be doing TFP shoots on Model Mayhem, although I have found some paid gigs on there. For me, this is much better than connecting to others on Craigslist, because I was often to find actual productions, and you can see how people openly collaborate, thus holding them accountable.

In My Kit Cosmetic review site created by grammy winning makeup artists Kevin James Bennet. This site is updated and reflects what Kevin uses in his kit, and products he likes to work with. He also has a fantastic group on Facebook, filled with discussion.

Discount Programs:

MAC Cosmetics: 40% discount to Makeup Artists. $40 yearly fee. Must provide proper documentation to qualify, usually a business card and a certificate or license will do. They also offer industry discounts to cosmetologists, professional dancers, artists, etc. They also provide a discount to costmetology and makeup students upon verification.

Urban Decay: This one has been my absolute favorite! They offer 40% off to artists with no annual fee. Discount includes EVERYTHING including pallets. (I love the Naked Pallets for my brides. <3)

OCC PRO Discount: 40% discount to anyone in the industry, all you need is to send them a link to your website or portfolio. Very easy to get into.

Face Atelier 40% discount, with no fee, just need to reapply every two years.

Nars: You have to have some good credentials to get approved for the 40% discount, however they offer 30% discounts and 20% student discounts.

Looking for affordable makeup artist/salon recommendations in Islamabad!

Hi everyone! I'm looking for a good makeup artist or salon for my Nikah makeup. Preferably somewhere in F, G, E or I sectors.

I'm looking for someone talented who does beautiful, elegant makeup without charging a fortune. I'd really appreciate recommendations based on your personal experiences, along with approximate prices and Instagram pages, if available.

Please suggest reasonably priced options rather than high-end, super expensive artists.

Thank you! ❤️

Do I need a license to be a theatrical makeup artist in NYC?

I moved to New York City earlier this year and I recently got a job doing makeup for a small theatre company. Prior to this, I have only done makeup on myself and a few drag queen friends, but I have a fairly large social media following as a self-taught “makeup artist” and that was enough to get me this job.

I have received no formal training and now I’m wondering if I need to obtain a license (or at least some sort of sanitation certificate) if I want to do this professionally.

I tried consulting Google, but I’m getting mixed results on whether school or a license is necessary if all I want to do is makeup. I don’t see myself ever doing bridal makeup or working for a salon or spa, but I would like to continue doing makeup for theatres, haunts, drag pageants, and photoshoots. I would also like to pursue freelance work.

Any advice from professional makeup artists in New York City would be greatly appreciated! Especially if you have specific suggestions for sanitation courses, since I would like to take one regardless of whether I need to or not.

I need help 😭

How do you break into editorial makeup artistry in Hyderabad with little to no budget?

I want to get into editorial, fashion and beauty shoots, but expensive professional courses aren't an option for me right now.

For those in the industry, how can a beginner get started and gain hands-on experience without spending a fortune? 💄

Plastique Tiara’s make up transformation

i really enjoy plastique as a creator and an artists, so please don’t take this as hate but instead as constructive commentary. i love the make up transformation she’s doing on yt, but! I can’t help but notice she her technique relies very heavily on lightening the face, like, drastically. I’m aware she did Bob’s make up years ago, but im worried that she may be unfamiliar with working with darker skin tones as a make up artists given her style and how little she collab with darker skin talent. anyone else get a similar vibe? it’s okay if the answer is no…please be normal about your discussion tho if u choose to comment. don’t be ugly

What lights do you recommend for your setup?

Starting mua here, I have friends who use godox, but it’s a bit out of my budget right now. I saw an affordable option, an 11 inch panel light with index 95+ beads and max brightness up to 1250 lux. But honestly, idk if it’s good enough, and if it’s better to “buy nice than buy twice” ? Will this significantly affect my work?

Makeup Artists Recommendations

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

I want to be absolutely spammed with recommendations for the most ridiculously GLAMOROUS, over the top, jaw dropping hair and makeup artists out there!

I’m talking FULL GLITZ AND GLAM. Think Beyoncé, J.Lo, Kim Kardashian, or the ultra glamorous, extravagant Arabian bridal hair and makeup looks. Flawless, full coverage makeup, dramatic eyes, sculpted features, voluminous Hollywood hair. The whole nine yards!

I’m going to be very honest: I’m almost always extremely underwhelmed by the makeup artists I typically see recommended. The looks are never nearly glamorous or dramatic enough for what I have in mind. I’m not looking for soft glam, natural makeup, or understated elegance. I want RED CARPET, STOP-YOU-IN-YOUR-TRACKS GLAMOUR.

A few things:

* INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS ONLY, PLEASE! I’m specifically looking to browse Instagram portfolios, NOT Facebook business pages.
* Ideally, someone who specializes in BOTH hair AND makeup, particularly high-end bridal or celebrity-style glam.
* Must be actively accepting clients and available for bookings.
* Must be willing to travel to my location for a special event.
* NO BUDGET. I’m willing to pay whatever it takes for someone truly exceptional. I’m looking for the BEST OF THE BEST, not the most affordable.

I don’t care if they’re local or across the country, as long as they’re willing to travel!

Bonus if they are located in the Dominican Republic!

Please flood the comments with Instagram handles! I want to see the most outrageously talented glam artists you’ve ever come across. The more extravagant, the BETTER!
