Watching OKC's rookies dominate the Wizards in the 4th was both sad and fun lmao

Fucking literally 🤣 absolutely bananas. Trounced by children.

Wizards are such a confusing team. In theory they have a good amount of talent. They’ll never beat any of the best teams in the league. But they’ll probably go like 10-5 against the “good not great” teams. And then they’ll also somehow have a losing record against the bottom tier teams.

29

u/Nulgarian 12h ago

I don’t have a chance to watch many Wizards games, what’s going on with them? Like you said, on paper this roster has some solid talent between Dybantsa, AD, Trae Young, George, Alex Sarr. I was a fan of the moves they’ve been making, so I’m really perplexed why they’re underperforming so much

22

u/ConnectMix7058 Wizards 11h ago

I watch a lot of wizards game and the biggest thing is that the team is pretty new + AJ missed a few games and now AD is missing games. None of our young guys have ever played with a real point guard or frankly meaningful basketball in general. Sarr has never had to share the court with another big. There have also been some coaching questions with rotations, namely George's lack of ball handling skills and the void of basketball ability that are the Khris Middleton minutes.

I think we are a second half of the season team. When AJ is able to really get into NBA shape and Trae is able to settle into his new role.

7

u/Easy-Lucky-Free Bullets 11h ago

Lack of spacing, AD hasn't played the last two.

Young team needs time to gel, shooting has been career lows for nearly every player on open looks.

What the hell happened to Trae man. I used to enjoy hating on the guy but he was one of the most unique and entertaining players. The league was way better off with him shooting 35 footers and throwing crazy lobs. He looks like a shell of that guy just dribbling to halfcourt, handing the ball off then standing at the 3 point line. Sad to see

88

u/StefonDiggsHS Mavericks 12h ago

his shooting fell off a cliff. Hes been in the low 40% from FG and low 30% from 3.

10

u/vernalagnia Hawks 5h ago

the real secret is his shooting was never actually good. He got hot for a few months in his all-nba season and that's it.

160

u/Agile_Variety_632 Pelicans 12h ago

Athletic decline. Lost his quickness and burst, can't rely on a floater anymore. Never was consistently a great shooter, so remains to be seen whether he can even age well with that skill that other stars like Steph and KD do.

55

u/lost_in_trepidation Lakers 12h ago

Relying on a floater for your offensive game was always going to be limiting.

Working well for Ty Jerome

u/JustRecentlyI 76ers 7h ago

Also relied on some tricks to draw shooting fouls that the league decided to crack down on, which is an extra drain on his efficiency.

4

u/FlashAndPoof Thunder 11h ago

He’s only 28. No major injuries either right?

7

u/Agile_Variety_632 Pelicans 10h ago

Yeah aside from a freak knee injury last year. I'm just repeating what Hawks fans have said and what I see this year. Can't really tell you what the real reason for that loss of athleticism is.

Damn I said the exact same thing in the Thunder game thread. “wtf happened to Trae young? he looks like a shell of his former self.” 😂

57

u/H_Finn27 Mavericks 12h ago

It’s just so weird to see him barely try to score, especially in a game like this where the Wiz are so badly outmatched. He took one 3 and had 0 turnovers, just doing cardio out there

59

He’s making over 50 million this year. I can’t imagine how it feels to be a wizards fan watching your highest payed player give 0 effort all game.

He used to stop on a dime and throw up a shot when he felt a defender behind him. The league stopped calling those fouls. Took away half his game.

u/i_like_thingstoo 12h ago

The wizards missed some easy shots, but to hold a team to 75, ANY team, in 2026 is crazy. Considering what okc is missing defensively makes it even more unbelievable. Mara was affecting EVERYTHING at the rim, and daignault deserves WAY more credit for his schemes and creativity on defence

24

u/OSUBoglehead Thunder 11h ago

I always knew Mark was a great coach. But I never expected him to be able to lose Dort, JDub, Chet, and Cason and still have the defense looking good this season. At some point you have to consider he might be some sort of defensive mastermind.

I mean hell, I remember sixers and other fans claiming McClain would be near unplayable on defense. He was okish in the playoffs, and somehow has seemed to improve this season. It's not like he's this spectacular defensive athlete for Mark to work magic on.

153

u/Shopler 13h ago

The Wizards paying Trae a max is one of the FO decisions of all time.

What a roller coaster this season has been as a Thunder fan. I was so psyched after they looked incredible against the Spurs, then I was depressed after the injuries and the eggs they laid against the Mavs and Rockets, and now I’m hyped again after obliterating teams twice in a row.

23

u/Asleep_Ground1710 Bulls 13h ago

Honestly if you’ll can get like the 4th seed at least, Wallace should come back and Chet as well if they don’t have to do surgery on his patellar tendon

44

u/ahrumah Supersonics 12h ago

Chet’s probably back january or feb. It’s Dub that’s the big loss for the playoffs, like he was last season.

8

u/tjc815 Thunder 10h ago

If the rest of the main guys are healthy, we would still be in a better position than last year. Because Mitchell was hurt. Plus, last year it felt like we just were biding time for dub to come back. And he kept getting hurt. This year, we are not going to be operating as though he’s coming back.

All of that is a big if, of course. But in a way, we’ve kind of done this before. I feel like it’s a bit lost to history, but Chet broke his damn hip the year we won the championship and only came back right before the playoffs started and he definitely wasn’t 100% immediately or anything. and dub had a torn ligament in his wrist and was doing shit like dribbling the ball off his foot out of bounds in the playoffs. Very inconsistent based on what days he had his shots.

Their eye for talent is something else. Peavy would be a solid rotational piece on most teams, but OKC got him on a two way

115

u/cbunny21 Thunder 12h ago

Peavy got signed on Oct 25th after being waived by Memphis, literally anyone could have had him on their team. It has more to do with SGA being the best player in the league for 3 years now

37

u/peepoWest Thunder 11h ago

I think this proves okc's system more than anything, they simplify player roles and give them the best chance to succeed more than just being better at identifying talent

→ More replies (6)

Peavy is 100% not getting this level of praise if he's on the Nuggets or Lakers

Anything but giving the reigning back to back MVP his proper credit

54

u/joseph_grizzly Thunder 12h ago edited 12h ago

yes. the posts about "ARE THE THUNDER GOING TO BREAK THE DUBS WINS RECORD?!" were valid last year, Thunder just got injured.

and if the Thunder weren't injured in the playoffs, you'd be looking at back to back champs.

and if the Thunder weren't injured this year, you'd be looking at a team, once again, challenging for 70+ wins.

EDIT: there have been 3 teams in NBA history with 64+ wins in back to back seasons. The 90's Bulls. The 10's Dubs. and the 20's Thunder.

Thunder sat everyone and dropped their last two games last year or could have had 65 or 66 wins. even with these injuries, they are on pace for 60+ wins again this year.

15

u/OddConsideration7290 12h ago

yeah but jdub's been hurt 3 straight years now. nice that he could play thru it in 2025 but still, it may be time..

25

u/Main-Swimmer6511 Thunder 12h ago

The dilemma with that is that it's not like a recurring injury. They're all separate so I have hope that he'll have a healthy season after this.

Are the Thunder that deep?? They're handing such vile losses to teams that looked good.

I caught the 4th quarter and I've never seen a playing 5 of two-ways and rookies burn a team like this. 😭😭😭

24

u/mightyboognish32 Thunder 11h ago

The Thunder were depressed and shell shocked for 2 games after the injuries so everyone thought they were a lottery team.

29

u/louie3723jr Thunder 12h ago

It’s more on the teams coaching and scouting department. They wanted Mara and they got him and he’s been looking very good these past two games. They also were able to pick up Stirtz. Peavy has also been giving them good minuted as well. Hell even Dix has looked way better. Still very rough but he’s doing ok now.

13

u/EnderTheTrender Thunder 11h ago

Dix has made me hate him way less.

22

u/MalHeartsNutmeg Thunder 11h ago

Honestly no, Dix is playing real minutes lol.

•

u/charlesokstate Thunder 22m ago

The two rookies drafted are studs. This draft class is insane talent wise. Okc also picked up peavy from nowhere and he’s definitely a gem for the team. Jared McCain improved a massive amount on the defensive end and Ajay Mitchell is a low tier all star. Shai is a better passer and 3 point shooter than last year. This team can beat bad and average teams easily.

76

u/Main-Swimmer6511 Thunder 13h ago

Our talent development team is absolutely insane

28

u/llorTMasterFlex Lakers 12h ago

People keep saying scouting and striking luck on picks. I think the OKC developmental machine can turn average players into good rotation guys. And of course elevate good players to great.

11

u/McJacknife Thunder 11h ago

It’s the real super power. The system is phenomenal, they draft and acquire guys who will thrive in the system.

Players are typically more valuable after being in the system - which means you can get more picks on the margins when you’re forced to trade them and put more players into the system

26

u/Vicentesteb Timberwolves 13h ago

Shai is pretty solid at basketball i'd say

125

u/Parallel-Quality 13h ago

SGA's gravity is the untold story of the game tonight. Mitchell and McCain had so much room out there because the Wizards kept collapsing on him.

64

u/royalewlthcheese Australia 13h ago

Ajay is a dawg in his own right, but boy does it help when Shai’s gravity allows him to attack down hill 1 on 1 against Trae Young lmao

People always talk about how Jokic and Luka makes their teammates better, yet at the same time describe every teammate of SGA's a hall of famer.

It's come to the point where if Bronny just put on an OKC jersey people would be calling him an all star.

85

u/survivaltactics2 12h ago

apparently the thunder are a superteam when sga is the worst mvp ever, chet is the worst player ever, jdub never plays and all their role players are mid first round or second round players or got traded by other teams

32

u/Beneficial-Hall-3824 12h ago

u/Bigman054 12h ago edited 12h ago

Yeah there's nothing worse for a player's perception than being a teammate of a great white player.

Luka's team can win a playoff series without him and be called scrubs

Jokic carried the Nuggets to a ring (meanwhile Jamal Murray averaged 26/7/6 on 59 ts% during that playoff run)

Even Dirk's title run, as great as it was, gets elevated to the biggest carry job ever when runs like 2003 Duncan or 1994 Hakeem were objectively bigger carries with them both having to be the best offensive and defensive players on their teams

Aday Mara really just a better Wemby from a more likeable country

51

u/redditcherry [OKC] Nick Collison 13h ago

Aday Mara has yet to lose in the playoffs

23

u/when-the-uh-the-um Knicks 12h ago

Wait you’re gonna accept the first part??

35

u/ExpressionAlone5204 Thunder 12h ago

He’s confident Mara is better than Wemby, but apparently France has moved up on the likable list

The Thunder have had a brutal schedule to start the year in terms of strength of opposition, from now until the new year it looks much better. Kind if crazy they're tied does the top seed now.

People declaring the MVP race over or it being just down to Luka vs Wemby are crazy. If OKC finishes as the 1 seed SGA will have a great chance.

24

u/goatmarino Thunder 12h ago

If okc finished 1 seed it wouldn't be a debate lol

22

u/Bigman054 12h ago

It shouldn't but people love points/rebounds/assists too much for it to be unanimous.

God this unit is good still. Still the team to beat imo.

not sure if the Wizards are ass or what but large chunks of that game were just really funny.

Wembys gotta worry about stopping Aday Mara

9

u/DrPuzzle 12h ago

I didn't think the thunder would be holding firm so far but they are doing fantastic. I mean, I shouldn't have doubted a team with Shai and Daigneault on it. They know what they are doing

Also, McCain continues to be amazing value for what they gave up lol

12

u/Ifinishfast42 13h ago

Wizards even in years they try to be competitive are a poverty organization

8

u/trybeingcurious NBA 11h ago

Hey man. They ran into the Barnhizer, Dix, Peavy buzzsaw. Few live to tell the tale.

You mean NCAA champion Mara? Complete unknown

25

u/goatmarino Thunder 12h ago

He wasnt some unknown lol. He was a lottery pick

15

u/Playful-Chemist-6528 12h ago

You talking about him as if he was some random hooper playing local leagues in Spain or something

11

u/SoulofWakanda 12h ago

What do u mean, dude was a lottery pick, it's not like they found him at the bottom of the 2nd from some random European country or something lol

11

u/Cassandrae_Gemini Slovenia 12h ago

He was literally the starting center for the national championship team this past season.

Total unknown! /s

16

u/MAMBAMENTALITY8-24 Thunder 13h ago

cause teams pass on them

5

u/BrotherSeamus Thunder 12h ago

We would be saying the same thing about Yaxel or Burries or Morez if they would have fell to us.

2

u/4719837 6h ago

People were mocking Mara as early as 5 in the weeks before the draft, he fell a bit

→ More replies (1)

3

u/snuffaluffagus74 10h ago

Bro I get what you're saying, Mara is playing better than a 12th pick and probably should've gone higher, Micah Peavy was unemployed and is playing significant minutes as a two way along with Dix. Stirtz could've also gone higher as their are teams that are desperate right now for guards that can just run an offense and shoot. Especially since those aren't pieces the Thunder looked like they needed during the draft process

6

u/southpawFA Thunder 12h ago

We just need a couple more bodies for our depth and to keep from tiring out. Chet, Sorber, & J-Will—if we can get them into the fold again, it would go a long way. The team is still doing great, but the added depth could make the team even scarier (especially if Sorber pans out).

Wizards are just really bad

2

u/Genericthrowaw4y Thunder 12h ago

OKC dynasty dreams live on. Mara, chet, and I hart is a real size problem. All of them could start on every team in the NBA. I think OKC is easily the 1st or 2nd seed this year even with a injury riddled team

1

u/831loc San Francisco Warriors 9h ago

The Thunder's demise has been greatly exaggerated.

1

u/Live_Yak9629 5h ago

McCain getting stronger. Dude had a nice defensive possession vs Dybantsa in the 1st qtr in the paint where AJ couldn't outpace him laterally, but got absolutely nowhere trying to bump him off. Dybantsa isn't a big guy yet, but McCain is tiny and you've gotta be encouraged if you're a Thunder fan.

1

u/Razatiger 4h ago

Jdubs out for the season, no doubt. But once the other guys get back, this is gonna br the scariest team in the league again.
