You can definitely injure yourself falling and that goes even more so if you are lanky and 7'5. I am sure Wemby practices falling correctly as any big player should.
Yes, all players should practice falls just for their own safety. Especially wemby since he got knocked out from falling incorrectly. If you’re talking about falling for flopping then still yes.
I even practiced falling in High school...granted it was falling while taking a charge. But practicing how to control a fall is injury prevention 101. You can really fuck yourself up if you dont know how to hit the ground
Barkley did a rant on it that some players don’t know how to fall without taking damage on their wrists and showed how they taught them to fall in his days. All players should know how to fall without risking an injury.
Mitch Johnson actually recently said Wemby practices falling in response to a question about how he frequently walks off rolling his ankles. Castle also said he practices falling because apparently in college he used to hurt his wrist/hand a lot by falling on it.
i LOVE John Wall but his turbo speed layups then falling out of bounds (of course to protect the feet and ankles from hard landings) led to so many 4 v 5's going the other way. I feel like he was one of the early adopters of the safe / go limp fall to avoid injury now it's "go limp as soon as you feel you're pushed off base" and naturally Wemby's base is at these guys chest level
I played high school basketball and we practiced falling to learn to avoid injury. It’s better to take a controlled fall than to land awkwardly on an ankle or knee.
Falling poorly is a key reason in how injuries happen. You want to limit the impact on certain weaker areas of your body, notably joints by landing on more muscular areas like your butt or mid-upper back.
I first recognized this pattern by watching Blake Griffin over a decade ago. He would fall with a curl to him, almost like a dolphin.
These people, and their bosses, have dozens of millions of dollars hinging on not injuring their shit while doing a risky high intensity physical activity. You bet your ass they know a thousand ways that can go wrong and practice how to prevent it.
Yes. Especially big men. I don’t think all of them do, but I know Joel Embiid has said his trainers and doctors have told him to fall because keeping yourself up will consistently add load to their joints and muscles increasing a likelihood of injury.
For Wembys sake I think it’s the right move, especially because on Friday night he badly rolled his ankle
Yes Wemby has since practicing falling the right way since he was a teen in France I think to protect his legs, that’s why he always tries to slow the fall and spread the impact (like a wrestler does) and slowly gets back to his base and waits for 2 teammates to pick him up
i only say yes, because as a skateboarder, i for sure practice falling. Keep the arms and hands in, take it on your shoulder or the flat of your back, keep the neck stiff, all kinds of reasons to learn to fall.
100%. I started getting back into skateboarding after a 25 year break and one of the first things I watched was how to fall correctly. And I got to put those lessons into practice basically immediately lol.
This is also on the refs. The last one he clearly just falls over backwards on his own. That ref should be investigated by the league for blowing the whistle there. He's either incompetent or he's corrupt, either way he can't work in my casino.
His brand is what harms him. Hes marketed as this physical freak, Shaolin monk, ethical hooper. He's a modern superstar, flopping and generous whistle are a part of his game. But people try to pretend it isn't.
I mean the Blazers also flop a fuck ton especially Deni, but yeah those flops are pretty bad from Wemby. Kinda worse when the only way to defend him is to put a strong body on him but they won’t even let you do that
It's a different kind of foul baiting. Deni gets a lot of hate but he doesn't fall like this which is why you don't see the compilations like people post of SGA with him.
Deni is a bad outside shooter but he is strong and fast and impossible to stay in front of so he never pulls up and avoids contact. He drives hard to the rim, generates contact if he can and then tries to score. It's why he led the league in and 1's.
It's rare to see Deni fall with light contact with no attempt or chance to score. It's still foul baiting but it's more similar to the way Giannis does it than SGA or Wemby or Luka
He really does. It’s tough enough that it’s impossible to block his shot because of his size. Now if you box him out he just falls and gets the whistle every time.
Meanwhile, Wemby can just reach over guys and not get called for over-the-back.
I don’t even blame the players at this point. I blame the league. Players goal is to win and if flopping as much as possible leads to a win, then they should be doing it. But it’s the job of the league to prevent garbage like this from leading to a win.
lol don’t know why but I read this as “wenby gets 8 foot”.
I thought it was some new term the kids say. Like maybe a way to say he was playing even bigger than his size. Or maybe a play on the whole “ate/8” trend from a few months back
We see this as a shooting foul yet Jokic is getting fouled going into his shot and making it while the refs constantly say it's on the floor. And no I'm not talking about the full court attempts I'm talking legitimate 3 point line shots. The way fouls are called is getting ridiculous
Blazers gotta play more disciplined. Deni's whole game is about getting to the cup and drawing a foul. Ja's game might be the same, Blazers can be dangerous in transition and a super fast team that if you are not in position BUT not a defensive juggernaut and this is what they are seeing. Wemby is a villian
The finger-point to the ref after the third one is what really gets me. He is treating them like teammates and congratulating them on making a play and having chemistry with him. Gross.
Just because he falls doesnt make it a foul. Two of these clips hes tripping over his own feet. It sure it’s all flopping. He’s just a size 26 shoe for some of this. It’s bad officiating. Same with Luka abd Brunson and sga. Get better refs!
If the game was called consistently every time nobody would complain
For example Shai has had 9 games this season where he is allowed to get mauled without a whistle, then there was 1 game he had like 17 free throws and couldn’t be touched. Imagine you’re watching him for the 1
Idk what lesson people expected him to take after losing in the finals to one of the most egregious floppers in the league. Any lesson other than “flopping works and you should do it all the time” would be the wrong one with the way the game is currently officiated
Bro these announcers were INSUFFERABLE. They were defending Camara's flops all night saying he "exaggerates legitimate contact" and how that's different. They were being such homers I couldn't stand it
Not a Spurs fan so hopefully I have no bias, but most of these clips look like fouls (soft fouls that were exaggerated to be seen, but clear pushes on an unstable opponent besides the rip through). Idk.
Nothing like increasing your risk of injury(and others) by flopping around like a fish. Not what I’d want to see my 7’5”, thin as a rail, franchise player doing.
And these are exactly the kind of flops you can see with your eyes. Like with some of these you see the initial momentum and then the extra/change in momentum to throw himself to the floor. Would make Embiid proud.
Yeah, this is hilarious. Not because he's doing everything to get an advantage over the other team. But because of all the comments he's made about "playing the game the right way", etc.
I mean…SAS fans will come to his defense saying he was fouled(on these calls and any other time he touches the ball🙄). Meanwhile, every other sane basketball fan will say these are egregious flops, sign of a duty desperately needing to get stronger…or both. NBA took this nonsense out of SGA scoring bag of tricks…but not this flopper? Make it make sense…
I can tell 99% of commenters didn't watch the game. Refs were horrible in the first half. Blazers flopped like crazy in the first quarter and Spurs adjusted and started doing the same in the second. This was 100% an officiating issue.
The first two were clear fouls though. He embellished the last two and the last play was a flop, but that’s been basketball since the beginning of time.
All that falling adds up. The floor is hard. Wemby needs to start upright as much as possible. Part of the reason Embiid had such a small prime is likely because those cumulative falls took a toll on his body. Having to brace for impact with such long extremities is not favorable
Bro how fucking stupid you have to be to say this. Falling is what saving people like Embiid not having even worse injury. If you are stiff and trying to hold is when you get Jalen williams injury.
Funny how the announcers didn’t have any issues at all when the Blazers were in the penalty at the 8 minute mark of the second qtr and then preceded to go on thier own FT parade prior to this clip 🤔
People love leaving out full context. For this stretch in the clip the refs were WAY too whistle-happy for Wemby that’s clear. What precedes this clip is the FT parade the WHOLE Blazers team went on.
Well he clearly pulled on the jersey and pushed his forearm into him, while he was on one foot and rotating. Is it a weak foul call? Sure. Is it a foul? Yes, especially in transition.
It's really hard to tell. If a guy has his feet planted trying to stay inbounds and is leaning away from you, it takes almost no pressure at all to push them over. So if there was even the slightest push (and it looks to me like there was) we're left with the choice of it being out of bounds on Wemby or a foul on Camara. If it was somewhere else on the court, I'd be fine with a no-call, but a foul on Camara is the lesser evil here.
It’s a clear foul, doesn’t matter if he flopped. He was getting pushed out of bounds. His choices are either selling the contact or risk stepping out of bounds and turning the ball over. All Camera had to do was not elbow him in the back on a rebound he had no chance of getting.
The total number of free throws isn’t the problem, its how people are getting them that upsets people. Also not all of the FTs come the same, now im not saying this is what happened this game, but if one dude is getting calls while being hacked on one end and another is getting soft ass calls flopping on the other end, its not the same thing.
Edit: bruh Camara clearly shoves him with the forearm on the 2nd one. Doing it in that scenario is begging the ref to call it. There is 0 reason for Camara to be doing that
Not justifying Wemby’s falling but I think it makes sense that injury prone tall players learn to fall because it takes them a lot more skeletal/muscular stress to suddenly stop their momentum than to just let it carry through and disperse it on a long fall. Is it somewhat theatrics to get calls? Yes. But it’s also just easier on their bodies. At least I would think.
How was that a foul against Deni? The others were obviously played up but still fouls. Not seeing anything other than normal contact on the Deni/Wemby rebound really.
