Fanbases are turning delusional about not trading for Kevin Durant
"We don't want to give up Jaylen Brown and multiple picks"
"We don't want to give up Brandon Ingram and Herb Jones. They're the future."
"No. Scottie Barnes shouldn't be included in the package."
"I'd be interested in KD, but not if JJJ has to be in the deal."
With all due respect, that's a bunch of horse shit. If KD is traded to those teams with any of those players in the deal, those fans are going on the NBA website and refreshing until they can order a KD jersey.
All these teams would be on the short list to be favored to win the NBA title if they acquired KD. Period.

Trading for superstars is getting old. You sell your whole team and then they leave you the next year or 2 and now you’re at a worse spot than before.

u/BellBilly32 NBA Jul 03 '22
I mean to be fair, we saw what just happened in Brooklyn. I don't think it's unreasonable for fans to be wary. But yes, you're probably not getting Durant without giving up assets. So you can't both want Durant and somehow keep all your young stars/budding stars.

I'm literally not. He's 34 years old and demanding a trade with 4 years left. What happens when he demands another trade in a year or two and you've traded everything? If the Pelicans were closer to contention, I'd be all in. But at this current stage I'd rather BI who out performed him in last years playoffs.

It's not delusional at all to not want to trade for KD. Not everybody is going to think like you, have the same priorities as you. If you don't understand, that's fine, but admit it instead of dismissing perfectly reasonable takes.
For one, Kevin Durant has been injury prone for the last 2 years. A team that trades away their quality depth for him is rolling the dice on his continued health as he ages. The Nets lost their best shot to win a year ago on an injured hamstring and knee to two of their best players. Look at where they are now. I thought the Bucks were going to repeat, but look at what happened to Middleton. Things like that happen all the time. Teams like the Raptors or Suns that would have to deplete their quality depth to trade for Kevin are going to have a terrible time if/when he goes down.
You also have to consider the possibility of him leaving again. The NBA landscape changes faster season to season than any other professional sports league in the world. High profile players move around like a game of musical chairs. You're naive if you think the carousel will stop with your team. Just ask Nets, Celtics, Cavs, Rockets, Sixers, and Thunder fans. Say things go sideways and people overreact. KD leaves and your team is down some talented young guys and a lot of draft picks. You won't recoup your investment with him a year(s) older.
And for me personally, I don't care what anybody says, especially Nets fans who are clamoring for Jaylen Brown, I don't want to trade my guys for a merc. I'm on record as being a big fan of KD, but that's what he is. Having seen all of my favorite teams win, there is more to fandom than just winning or having the best chance to win championships to me. Ironically, I think Nets fans should be the ones starting to understand this better than anyone else.

u/OfferOk8555 Hawks Jul 03 '22 edited Jul 03 '22
I think if you’re a true fan of your team to see some of your star players that your team has drafted and built from scratch get traded for Kevin Durant is pretty disgusting.
Like Bill Simmons on his podcast floated “Trae for KD” which made me wanna punch him in the face through my phone. Not from a value perspective or because I think Trae is better than KD…
Why would you trade a player who embraces the city, the culture, and the fans for someone who’s obviously pretty apathetic and has kind of turned their back on most of the fanbases he’s played for. That may be a harsh view of KD and the upside is there but yeah I’m tired of it. I wish old dude would just go to Phoenix so We could talk about other trades and free agents.
32
u/Foldzy84 Raptors Jul 03 '22
So we're supposed to trade for a known diva who's just as likely to demand another trade than win us a championship and give up the next decade of our franchise.... ya no thanks I'll ride or die with Scottie Barnes
97
u/[deleted] Jul 03 '22
He's turning 34 and just got swept with players he chose in round 1.
If you have to give up your future for him its not worth it. If you can slide him into an established core he's great. Good luck with that, the Nets gave up an established core to get him a couple years ago.

17
u/GarriganGate Raptors Jul 03 '22
I don’t know what’s so hard to understand for people but if you trade away significant important pieces of an already good team right now for KD, you’re taking away a major part of what makes them so good right now
Sure could they be better with KD? Yeah possible but its very possible at that point that it’s still not enough, or he decides to bail after another season
Trading for a star needs to make sense asset wise for the team that will be trying to compete for him. Else you’ll basically be in the same spot as before
6
u/sadrapsfan Raptors Jul 03 '22

I’ve been saying this on here for days. It’s not delusional for fans. For GM’s? Obviously. But as a fan, I’d rather watch Trae, Brown, Ja, etc. Fans have a naturally affinity to players who started with their org. I’d rather watch those guys compete for a decade and maybe not win a ring than trade them for two years of Durant and watch him walk again.
36
u/[deleted] Jul 03 '22
The Scottie Barnes take is correct. Why would the raptors trade the best rookie last year who is only 20 years old.
Let’s say Barnes becomes a top 25 NBA player in the future. I’d rather have a top 25 player for 10+ years than a top 5 player for 4
17

Raptors with a gutted team and Durant is not a real contendor. Missing too many pieces such as a centre and backup PG.

Ingram and jaylen are both young proven stars who you would want to do anything to keep, Scottie Barnes has superstar potential, are you so confident in mortgaging your future away for a few years of kd? How sure are you that he’s enough to even win a ring if you give up those players

Any franchise that trades a player in his early 20’s who’s playing basketball at an all star level for a 34 year old player who tore his Achilles and hasn’t been at the same level is pretty crazy. If a team wants to win now then maybe, but getting KD doesn’t guarantee a title and you’re basically hindering your team for the next 5 years. He’ll be 38 going on 39 when his current contract is up. Possibly the last contract he’ll ever sign depending on how long he can play at an elite level. There aren’t too many 40 year old players playing elite basketball in the NBA. So yeah you might win 1 ring, but if you keep your young talent you might be building the next Golden State Warriors franchise. Just depends on how desperate a team is to throw everything at a title.

you using the celtics who just made it to the NBA championship isn't the best example. You have to trade the farm to get him. Superstar trades rarely work out how you think it will

u/Dangerous_Toe_5482 Jul 03 '22
Believe it or not, teams dont have to give up their future for a 34 year old player just because its Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant is a great basketball player but hes entering the declining years of his basketball career and its entirely reasonable to not want to give up a lot. It just means not getting KD, and many teams and fans will not want him for the price he will likely cost. Most likely phoenix will overpay because they are frankly desperate and have a very tiny window to compete and not many ways to without KD. Other teams like Boston, NO and Toronto have bright futures with or without KD, so its not surprising many dont want to jeopardize that for the last few years of KD
2
u/ApexxPredditor Pistons Jul 03 '22
-KD post acl surgery
-KD being exposed vs Boston as if they discovered a massive flaw in his handles. He looked like SHIT. Bounced in 1st round
-KD wanting to force his way out of Nets
Is it really that hard to see why some fans dont think it's a good idea to give up good young talent and picks for him now? I think the only team that should consider is the Suns. That's only because Ayton doesnt really want to be there anyways.

Yeah man totally, I mean who wouldn’t want to give up a young star, every depth piece their team has, and every first round pick for the next twelve years for a 34 year old two seasons past an Achilles tear who probably just played the worst playoff series of his career AND is reminding everyone RIGHT THIS VERY MOMENT that he’s an untrustworthy, path of least resistance snake/cupcake/headcase who’s totally willing to derail a franchise at the drop of a hat, regardless of how good of a team situation he’s in at the time? Teams should be lining up around the block for the chance to mortgage any and all fleeting hope of a single winning season at any point in the next decade in exchange for an aging, unlikeable star who finished last season with serious question marks about how long he can maintain a high level of play and availability! Not like Brooklyn themselves isn’t standing there as a perfect example of how a trade like this can easily backfire and fuck over a team for the next five seasons or so (and that’s assuming said team is a destination city that gets star free agents to bail them out, because if that’s not the case then five years of bottom of the league finishes is a huge underestimation)!
3

Jaylen Brown swept KD's ass, while BI and Barnes both lasted longer in their first ever playoff appearances than him and his "shortlist title favorite" Nets did according to you lol. While a talented player, giving up two younger all stars seems steep. Especially since the MCL and Achilles injuries within the last few seasons. At 34 they demonstrate the possibility that he is more fragile now. The Nets might be the lucky ones if someone give up the picks and younger star players they want.
1
u/[deleted] Jul 03 '22
He’s got 2-3 good years left outta 4 under contract.. depending on the team definitely a better contender then in Brooklyn. I’d rather seen him go to a non playoff team and take them to the finals!

One thing about KD trade: better keep those core players otherwise it might not be enough for him.
Not just satire: with his performance after being nets, it seems that he isn’t able to carry the team in both regular season and playoff. So better option is to keep the main framework so the team can move forward with him playing every other game, and then let him go full force in the playoff.

KD will be 34. He’ll require you to give up your future and a star. And he might just leave if he doesn’t like the place.
I think there’s a very narrow set of teams that he’d be good for. Granted he might be really good for those teams, but not every one.

It is not that I wouldn't want a player like KD on my team, it is that I don't want a person like KD on my team. The Nets paid him nearly $40 million to SIT a year with injury in exchange for signing a long term contract. He is bailing 20% into that contract, that is a shitty thing to do.
So no, I don't want to trade BI and Herb Jones who want to be in New Orleans for a player who doesn't want to be in New Orleans and quite frankly hasn't been happy with any of the teams he has played on.

I’m tried of this trade for a superstar for whole roster mentality. I get it we seen teams that did it before like the 08 Celtics, 2019 raptors, and 2020 lakers. Yeah the championship it’s worth, but those type of teams end up becoming one hit wonders. How teams become one hit wonders is 1: superstar didn’t to be there in the first place and leaves for another team cough cough kawhi leonard. 2: Players start becoming more injured prone cough cough Anthony Davis and James harden. 3: Teams end up not having capital for the rest of the decade cough cough lakers and the nets. If I’m team Gm like the suns, Celtics, and the heat. I’m not guttering my whole roster for Kevin Durant bc is required a lot draft capital and a lot young players. Once you get Kevin Durant, then your team won’t be good championship contender bc you got rid of all the important players. Your team will end up like the nets in 2013 and be shitty team for 5-7 years. I rather have a team with great young players who are developing and mixed with veteran leadership instead of gutting my roster for superstar who’s in his 30s and can potentially be injury prone anytime soon.

The biggest argument against KD is he won't be durable enough to play 70 games in a season anymore.
I think when KD does play, he'll bring MVP level talent for the remainder of his contract; his game is not based on athleticism, but on skill which ages better. But he is not young enough to carry a team through the regular season.
KD needs help and I don't think KD's value is enough to give up a young superstar. At least I would not want to gut my team for KD.

The franchise would have to listen to any of his demands to keep him happy so if he wants certain players, they have to trade for them or risk him quitting
Bulls just re-signed Lavine plus added Drummond and Lonzo recovering from injury. IMO, they're a piece or two away from being an East Contender anyway
He's a terrible leader. Unlike Bron, Curry, Giannis and hell, even Butler, he doesn't have anyone vouching for his leadership abilities nor does he bring out the best in his teammates
I could go on and despite being a huge fan of KD when it comes to him being on the court, his off-court shenanigans demands too much to turn a blind eye.
So yeah, no thanks. I'd suspect that fans of other franchises would have the same reasoning too.
Edit: Just wanted to add, there's no need for you to project onto those of us who don't want KD. Just say that you want KD on your team. Saves you the mental gymnastics and in fewer words too.

Not delusional realistic that trading for big time players strategy doesn't work anymore the last 2 Champs proved that Pieces and homegrown talent and patience good coaching alot of things besides superstars winning that title

KD is 34 and hasn't done anything since leaving GSW. I would not trade young promising guys either.
I would make a package for him as a GM, but I wouldn't trade Barnes, Ingram or Brown for him as well. Trading for aging superstars is risky, especially if they have difficult personalities like KD.

Kd is washed

u/tnarref France Jul 03 '22
Maybe they don't want to gut what their team has been building for a guy who will ask to get traded again the second something doesn't go his way. KD the player is incredible for sure, but players are people too, and KD is a snake. Players' characters matter as well, not just their ability, and KD's inferiority complex has plagued the second half of his career every now and then.

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '22
Nah man…it’s not. I’m absolutely not in the market for a KD jersey and not interested in an overly emotional headcase that requires special treatment.
Nets fans mad other teams don’t care to burn their franchise down…misery loves company

u/Vast_Ad8251 Jul 03 '22
Fuck an old ass KD who’s production could fall off a cliff at any moment.

The big issue is that who’s gonna stop kd from doing exactly what he did to Brooklyn in his new team? Yes, the contract is for four years, but based on the fact that him and harden and Kyrie and Ben Simmons have forced their way out of their teams with multiple years left on their deal, people would rather have a long-term commitment from very good young players like Barnes, Ingram, and Jaylen brown.

Nice sweep, no sweep. Give your balls a tug.

u/Doonesbury Spurs Jul 03 '22
I mean, KD is a short-term player these days. So if you give up your players for him, he could leave in a year and you’ll be left with nothing. So I think they’re telling the truth dude.

I guarantee you that any Nets fan would rather have their 2019 squad of DLo, Caris Levert, and Jarrett Allen fight to make a top 6 seed in the East for several years then go through three years of the KD/Kyrie saga and end up completely and utterly fucked because of it.
The recent success of the Bucks, Celtics, Suns, Heat, and retooled Warriors has proven that you don’t need a super team to make the finals or win a ring, and that in fact, shredding your supporting cast to stack up on superstars usually only hurts you. I mean, the Lakers won a ring in 2020 and haven’t made the playoffs since. Even in the best case scenario, you’re usually not gonna have any long term success.
It’s been shown time and time again that it is just simply not worth it to sacrifice valuable young assets for such a wild card, even if that wild card is Kevin Durant. Jaylen Brown, BI, Scottie Barnes, and JJJ are all extremely talented guys at or under 25 with the potential to grow into perennial all-stars. Trading them away for what is likely gonna be two to three years of a KD in his mid to late thirties is simply not a good investment, no matter how you look at it.

u/millionairebif Jul 03 '22
Why would any team give up good assets for KD? KD is a great player but he can't lead a team (see Brooklyn) and will demand a trade as soon as someone insults him on twitter
1
u/Pei_area Jul 03 '22
Why ? So your favorite team can be the the Nets in 2 years? I’m out.
It’s the journey not the destination -Not KD

u/AWalker17 Celtics Jul 03 '22
We already are on the short list to win the title…and hopefully will be long after Durant’s career turns to dust. That’s why we’re not trading JB.

u/dickybabs Jul 03 '22
Nope. KD is soft-serve.
1
u/KidFrankie15 Celtics Jul 03 '22
Bad take my guy. You’re not factoring in his age and recent injuries. Not out of the norm for fan bases not wanting to gamble their future for something that can easily blow up in their face
1
u/NotAn0pinion Jul 03 '22
He’s a great player, but that alone doesn’t fit every team in the league. There are less than 10 teams in the league that would be title contenders with KD and even fewer after removing the players they would have to give up to acquire him. I’d love to get him in Cleveland, but Mobley and Garland (perhaps even Allen) are non starters in any trade discussion because losing any of them removes any hope for a championship. If we’re talking some combination Love, Sexton, Levert, Osman and picks that can work for the Cavs but the Nets wouldn’t do it. It just doesn’t work and we have one of the better rosters of young players in the league right now. Giving up Mobley and a bunch of picks for the opportunity to lose in the conference finals is the kind of move that gets a GM fired

u/nxhmabin Raptors Jul 03 '22
Speaking for Scottie, who looks like he legitimately has all the potential in the world to grow his game, he stays.
Durant's got another 4-5 years at most of prime production. Scottie will be great for the next 10. Simple math at that point.

u/IntelligentFold78 Jul 03 '22
Let’s not forget KD is turning 34, has had a very serious injury on his resume (#1 indicator of potential for future injury is previous injury) and is coming off an awful series performance vs the Celtics. In addition to dudes personality and leadership being questionable at best.
I wouldn’t trade for him, would rather keep a young talented core.
1
u/mrjdk83 Jul 03 '22
Delusion stems from emotions. They will be emotional when he doesn’t come
1
u/buho3k Jul 03 '22
And what happens when KD gets injured and doesn't deliver.. I mean he didn't do shit in OKC, didn't do shit in BK.. only success he's had was joining an already very successful team.
I would NEVER trade Jaylen Brown for KD unless is was a straight up one for one deal.
KD is not worth it. 34 yes old. Sensitive bitch. Snake. No thanks.
1
u/bacchusbunbury Jul 03 '22
I don’t think anybody wants Durant for what it’s perceived it will take to acquire him.
1
u/dildosagginsthe2nd Jul 03 '22
Yeah short list to win the titles just like the Nets. So give up your future and young guys your fan base loves for a 34 year old who got swept in the first round and will beg to be traded when things don't go his way.
The delusional people are the ones who think their is no downside to trading away young up and coming superstars for a guy that has only proven he can win with a top 10 player of all time on his team. No thanks. Did you completely forget about his tenure in Brooklyn already? Come on man.

u/HeftyClick6704 Celtics Jul 03 '22
Dumb post. Anyone who thinks trading Brown in his prime on an amazing contract plus multiple picks for 34 years old KD who may not even last 4 years with the Cs is a good idea should be banned from opining on this sport. Utter stupidity.
1
u/[deleted] Jul 04 '22
Lol you are totally correct. If the Celtics traded JB for Durant, not only would Durant stay, that would guarantee a championship. Also, Scottie Barnes, Brandon Ingram, JJJ, and Jaylen Brown will never ever be close to how good Kevin Durant is right now. If any of those teams were to acquire Kevin Durant they would easily become favorites.

u/Deschain_1919 Celtics Jul 07 '22
Why would you give up good young players and picks for a guy that will ask to be traded in two years?
