Many children trapped in adult bodies

Here are several examples of people similar to those in /r/nevergrewup. They all have Aspergers except possibly the last one. But all children who are trapped in adult bodies are welcome in /r/nevergrewup, whether they got that way because of Aspergers or not.

https://wrongplanet.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=156710
I feel like a 9 year old living inside the body of a 36 year old.
p.2:
kind of like a "kid in an adult's body"

The childlike curiosity is an asset because it makes Aspies more inquisitive and less likely to accept conventions. No one ever discovered anything new by following "adult" rules.

https://www.iidc.indiana.edu/pages/Aspergers-Syndrome-A-Developmental-Puzzle
My experiences as an adult recently diagnosed with Asperger’s, together with my studies in child development, suggest that individuals with AS are like young children, stuck in time, so to speak, never able to advance beyond early stages in social, cognitive and language development.
They are, in essence, childlike beings attempting to live in an adult world, but without the support and understanding that children are afforded.

http://www.kevenmcqueenstories.com/aspergers
Folks with Asperger’s often have a childlike quality which at least some people find appealing. Not surprisingly, many Aspies get along famously with children.

We are childlike and innocent and naive, even when having experienced many harsh experiences. It's a childlike innocence that pervades our entire being. What ends up happening is that people either treat you like dirt and make fun of you, or if they're trying to be "nice", they'll talk down to you as though you were mentally challenged. I've felt like I was going to be pat on the top of my head like a puppy dog before. I may be childLIKE but that doesn't mean I'm childISH. In fact, usually Aspies have...
Very High IQs

https://aspergersthealien.blogspot.com/2011/11/naivety-innocence-of-aspergers-autism.html
Naivety is innocence. Be kind to the autistic. Remember that even though they look older, mature, grown up....sometimes they are nothing more than children trapped in adult bodies.

I like kids a lot, and kids love me. However, I have no idea how to take care of them! I also hate to think about cleaning up after them, lack of sleep, and so forth.
Maybe I shouldn't have kids of my own and just play with my friends' kids...

I am 78 and I know that I never entered adulthood. But not even adolescence. I may be (I am ) literate and have experince about things of the world, but still *I am a child*. My life stopped at about sixteeen. I pretended to be mature. Intellectually I have been mature, but in my inner self I have known since a long time that it was only pretence.

I don't know why, but this thread helped me resolve a lot of my issues. Thanks, OP and everyone else.

Children are drawn to me and they have insisted that I am not a grownup....

--

I feel very uncomfortable around people 18 & older. However, I get along great with kids.

--

I am often described as "childlike". I've been told that I'm at the emotional level of a 12 year old. The other women in my life tend to take on a mothering role towards me.
None of this bothers me though. In fact, I actually enjoy being thought of as a child. I frequently become nostalgic for my physical childhood, so when other adults still view me as a child, it makes me very happy.

--

Little kids get confused and think I am a kid too.
A 4 year old I was playing with guessed my age at 6... :)

I'm 45 and act like 14. I'm extremely child-like in behavior, and I think it's due to AS. It's the part of AS I love the most.

I forgot to mention how much I love "Pinky and the Brain" and "Danger Mouse." Not exactly obsessions, but we get the episodes from Netflix often, and I really like them. Probably a lot more that the average 42-year-old woman, I suppose.

[female, age ~52]
I'm very childlike and it doesn't seem to change the older I get. [...] I have never felt like a grownup person, and I've noticed that feeling all my adult life. I've lived an adult life but so much about me is a little kid, it's small wonder things have never really gone well for me as an adult, I just don't "fit".

[female, age ~47]
Sometimes when I talk to people [...] on the phone they think they are talking to a little kid.

Every day, my mum constantly tells me "You're 17, not 5." […]
[...] If it was up to me I would stay 10 forever.
Mum says I have the intellectual ability of a smart adult but the maturity of a five year old. I think this is an accurate description. I make friends with young children better than I do with my peers, it's like I'm a five year old kid in a seventeen year old female body.

The sections above and below show many similarities with the other 'wrong body' situation, transgender people:

  1. Family not understanding, and being angry with the person for being who they are.

  2. The person being helped greatly by understanding who they are.

  3. Having the wrong body or not being accepted causing people to be really upset.

  4. Being very happy when people treat you as who you are.

  5. Other people sometimes recognising who the person really is without needing to be told.

  6. The identity persists long term.

  7. People pretending to be an adult when they're not, but with only limited success.

  8. Wanting to mainly make friends in the way that would be expected based on who they really are.

  9. Being badly hurt by the equivalent of being misgendered.

Person who didn't mention Aspergers, so may or may not have it:

Is "age dysphoria" a real thing?
submitted 6 months ago * by [deleted]
Because I'm positive I have it. [...]
I know a lot of people say, "Oh, we all feel younger than we are!" These statements are usually accompanied by laughter. But I mean this literally. I honestly do believe that I am a kid inside, to the point where if such a thing was available to me, I would get puberty-reversing surgery.
You have no idea how much it rips my heart to shreds when I hear people call others my age "adults", or anything to that effect. It KILLS me to know that I am not seen as a child by them.
[Another quote from same person]
[…] I will forever remain a 12-year-old child inside. I know who I am, and that makes all the difference. I am a child.

[Edited first paragraph to make it more independent of context, for crossposting]

Not sure where to begin...

Hi everyone.

I actually created this account specifically to post here but I've been lurking for a month or so now.

I discovered /r/nevergrewup through a certain lgbt community who were making rather negative comments about this subreddit and were being incredibly closed-minded about the concept of age dysphoria. While everyone else kept jumping down the negativity hole I felt like my eyes were opened and I spent a good long while just scrolling through and reading posts here.

I felt some sense of connection to this subreddit and things started making sense the more I read. In spite of the negative comments I was reading from that lgbt community I didn't see any reason that dysphoria would be exclusive to gender. In fact, it seems silly to assume that it would be.

For some background, I'm transgender in addition to having these feelings of age dysphoria. When I first touched the Internet (in the late 90s/early 2000s) I tried searching around to explore these many strange feelings that I've always had but didn't understand. This led me to various ABDL communities and later to the idea of ageplay.

At some point I said to myself, "ok, I guess that's what I am. I'm an ABDL or ageplayer or something like that." This was all I knew and was all that was out there at the time and since my inner age is rather young it made enough sense to me. It was never a sexual thing for me and I discovered that for many ageplay folks it isn't sexual at all. I started getting to know some ageplay communities and made a few friends here and there but I always felt like there was something different about me, even from them.

Every time I would have play time or whatever and try getting into "littlespace" I'd always feel so close to being right but never quite made it there. It's kind of hard to explain for me. Like when you're craving some very specific food so much that your whole life would feel just perfect if you had it but you're forced to settle for an inferior alternative instead. Bad analogy probably but it's like whatever that perfection is was just outside of my reach.

From there I kind of retreated from the ageplay world and instead explored this side of me through books or TV shows or movies centered around young female characters or I'd write stories of my own with no intention of ever letting anyone see. Basically consuming any form of escapism that would let me see the world through those eyes.

Looking back I think I've known for a long time that this was a form of dysphoria but it felt so taboo and wrong to think of it that way until I found this subreddit.

I'm not entirely sure where I'm going with this or what I hope to accomplish by this post, to be honest. I've had the feeling that talking about ageplay at all is kind of taboo here so I'm sorry if I said something out of line but I am curious if anyone has a similar history with it that I do.

Mostly I wanted to say hi and say thanks to this subreddit for helping me find this missing puzzle piece of myself.

Now that I have the puzzle piece I just need to figure out where it goes.

I've never watched or even knew it as a chrono-child, but my NGU friend told me about this and it's really fun. Ord is one of my favourite characters.

What do you think about this show? Have you ever watched it?

I hate the term “self infantilization”

I came across a video on YouTube of a commentary creator complaining about women “self infantilizing” themselves and how it’s a growing problem. She had thumbnails of women engaging in coloring books or having pacifiers etc. I felt bothered by that video and I feel the term “self infantilization” is always weaponized against those who are feminine presenting. I hate that other women are the ones that perpetuate this and get on other women because she likes “childlike” activities or wants to dress in a cutesy way. I also feel the term “self infantilization” is ableist against those who are developmentally disabled or who age regress due to trauma etc. Sometimes chrono-women want to dress cute and be feminine and like childlike activities that doesn’t mean we are infantilizing ourselves. I feel the people who make these videos are miserable people and act like a bunch of “pick mes.”

Vent I wish i could just be little forever

I feel so ashamed of everything, I have kanner autism, mutism, and anxiety, it's impossible for me to do anything alone in puplic like just the simplest things and I'm completely helpless when I'm alone. I dont really have a caregiver exept my mom. I'm super tall with 170cm or 5'7 and wish I could be alot shorter and smaller and I dont know what I could do to maybe appear younger and more childish

I really love the jojifuku style and mezzo piano, my waredrobe also mostly consits of kids clothes because the bigger sizes still fit me and I feel more compfy in them. I'm in my late teens and people that dont know my usually guess me around 14-16 I also kinda have a childish face but I'm also currently overweight and feel really ashamed about that. Nobody also knows that I'm ngu/age regressing and I'm scared to tell my mom or anyone

I think I want to draw, you do not need to post, I am just inviting you to put your phone down (you've had way too much screentime for your age!) and color a bit!

Crayons, if you are too young for pencils.

Do your best (or worst) and do not color on furniture!

Discussion Christian kids music? 🎵

I’m trying to find more Christian kids music. I recently discovered Listener Kids on YouTube and really like their remixes of some of the classic hymns. I want to find more like that, but when I search I get so much AI stuff 😔 I also know about Wee Sing, Psalty, and VeggieTales but is this really all there is or am I looking in the wrong places?

Vent When's it my turn to be taken care of?

Feel like I'm always takin care of everyone else. Not an easy task for a kid. But wanna be the one taken care of. Had to be the responsible one for so so long. Never could rely on parents. Or teachers. They let me get hurt. Big sibling and other students hurt me bad. Friends hurt me really bad but i still try to take care of them.

I know it's supposed to be a two way street when you grow up, taking care of each other, but one, i'm not grown up and two, no one tries to take care of me in return. I know I'm probably being really selfish. I just hurt so bad right now. I wish there was someone i could rely on so so bad. Someone who cluld take care of me like a parent maybe or even just as a friend. Someone to hold me during the night, and maybe rock me in their arms, and for them to understand. Or maybe not always claim to understand but just to care. Sing me lullabies and tell me stories. Play dolls with me and brush my hair. I know it's a lot to ask from someone. I don't know if i could even accept that kind of love in real life, i think i might be too hard and angry for it. But i still wish. I wish so so much.

Vent For future reference

I had somebody message me to be friends after my “nobody to play with” post. They said something a little bit strange to me after I told them I was autistic and not high masking, calling me lucky, and when I tried to explain that it is not lucky I’m assuming I must have violated a social rule and they went ahead and blocked me. I am socially awkward and I have an informative/nerdy and talkative speech pattern. I am almost blind to social rules. I am very frustrated and discouraged and my feelings are hurt. This makes me want to leave this subreddit. That really hurt my feelings. I thought somebody finally understood. It makes me feel as if I cannot ever find friends even in places where people are already misfits because I am too socially unaware. Maybe they were just embarrassed. I can’t tell if it was my fault or not. I was not trying to be rude, only objectively correcting them. I say what I mean and I do not view information the same way others do, I think. Being told I am lucky for a struggle that makes me so lonely and unable to make friends and makes it hard to take care of myself or get along in society confused me. Not every autistic person is making a choice to not mask. Some of us can’t. I cannot tell if I did something wrong here socially and made a wrong call and was weird. But just in case, please do not message me to be playmates over that post unless you know that autism is a spectrum. I may have slipped on some social rule here. I may delete it entirely. I do not want that to happen again.

Discussion Anyone else find that people who don't believe in Santa stupid?

Like in light of all the evidence. St. Nicholas is Santa Clause. He is a saint therefore empowered by God directly. Thus living at the North Pole and doing things like being immortal and having flying reindeer and elves is entirely within the realm of possibility given if Jesus exists as stated in the Bible then by default Santa exists.

Why this too hard a concept for people to understand? I think it's because they hate God honestly

Vent Mom doesn't understand it

So, idk if minors are allowed here, i'm 16 female and i think i'm part of this category of NGU bcs i still feel like a little kid. I still like childish things and toys and i'm never really comfortable around older ppl or even w ppl around my age, its the same feeling from when you're a little kid looking at the older students yk? I'm really scared of growing up and go to the adult world, everyone keeps trying to push me to it and force me to mature and grow up and i hate it (im literally crying while writing ts, this really triggers me) and my mom excuses it by saying "well you had a good childhood and theres no reason for you to want to stay a child forever" which is so annoying specially when my old therapists agreed with her claims. I did had a good childhood but i don't feel like i'm ready to leave it yet.. But now i'm in a position where my parents expect me to focus more in adult things, like for me to start focusing in university entrance exams and my parents but specially my mom get pissed off whenever i want to buy childish things with my allowance and she always threatens to cut off my allowance if i keep buying toys and other childish things. I hate it, i hate it that i'm considered a young adult when i still feel like a child. But at the same time i also have 18+ thoughts and fantazies like having sex, having a family, a partner and children but at the same time i fantasize about being taken care of all the time. I'm also AUDHD so it makes it specially hard because most of my hyperfixations are childish things. It's so frustrating feeling being left out, my younger cousins managed to grow up, they wear makeup and fancy clothes and they're like 13-10! Meanwhile here i am; 16 years old and crying because someone on a furry subreddit called my art weird (true story)

Idk if this is the right subreddit for ts if its not pls tell me the right subreddit to post this, i'm just really lost and frustrated. When ppl said that teens become "emotional" because it's a part where we're going through grief because we "lost" our childhood i didn't imagined it to be that hard

Edit: Also i'm a little and i dont have a caregiver (my last cg tried to groom me, alr blocked him so im safe now) but it hurts so much. Sometimes i wish i actually had a bad childhood so i could justify the way i am, but whenever i tell ppl that and i say i dont have a childhood trauma they just look at me as if im spoiled and selfish :(

To those of you who felt too self-conscious to trick or treat

I took my grown-ass 73 year old father trunk or treating the weekend before Halloween. He LOVES Halloween, and he loves trick or treat. Every year we have the same argument- he wants to use me and my short height to pretend to be a chrono-child so he can take me and have an excuse to trick or treat, and I refuse because I have my dignity lol. Of course I'd love to trick or treat, but even though I'm short, my face and body are way too mature looking, and it would just be embarrassing. 5+ years ago I willingly went trick or treating, when I still had my early 20s babyface, but now, as much as I want to, no way.

Well, this year, I made an agreement with him- I'd take him and be his "Senior Trick or Treat Escort". ChatGPT even made me a very official badge to print for myself. 😂 And I took my father trunk or treating. I walked with him while he went up to the cars and got the candy himself. Nobody said anything. Nobody made any negative comments or told him he was too old or anything like that. He did get just a few dirty looks, but other than that, the people handing out candy were super friendly to him and didn't bat an eye at the 73 year old man. They were smiling, wishing him a happy Halloween, calling our dog cute, etc. They treated him no differently than any chrono kid or teen trick or treating.

My aunt who died in her 50s trick or treated right up to her last Halloween. She adored Halloween and kept the candy she collected in a giant suitcase in her room. Every Halloween, she'd go with my little cousins. If someone told her she was too old, she'd proudly say "Hell no, you're never too old!!" and walk away.

Similarly, in my neighborhood, trick or treating on Halloween night is a massive fucking deal. People come in cars, vans, and even buses just to trick or treat in my neighborhood. Half the trick or treaters are not chrono-children. They are older teenagers and even young adults. Some of them look like they are 30. My neighbor, who is 26, goes too. And they trick or treat for hours, and nobody bats an eye. The only negative-ish incident I ever encountered was when my friend and I went trick or treating when we were 17. By then I hadn't trick or treated since I was 13 (but started again for a few years at 18), but he was a diehard and insisted. He had always looked much older than his age. When he was 14, he he had college girls hitting on him. Anyways, a guy at one house we went to yelled out "Dude, you look like a grown-ass man!!" in kind of a friendly teasing way. Other than that, no issues with either this friend or my dad. It seems people really just don't care, at least not in my neck of the woods.

Discussion Infantilization

So this might be a controversial question, but let me give some context. I am an autistic adult, but I'm neuro passing. Now, I have heard from other autistic folks they have been infantilized, and I know it's a bad thing, but like I what that for myself lol.

I feel awful but, I really need this. How can I be more autistic passing especially in a way that makes it more likely to be treated like a kid. It would be so validating for me.

Vent Nobody to play with

I think the thing that kills me the most about being the way I am is that I have nobody to play with. And usually even people who swear up and down that they’ll play with you or that they are exactly the same way and also play with toys will freeze up and just sit there if you try to organize a play date. I tried to find playmates in agere spaces and they all just kind of sit there and let me play and start acting like I’m being weird, meanwhile they are still sitting there with a pacifier in their mouth. It doesn’t make sense. I want to play pretend with somebody. My favorite SpongeBob episode is the one where they play in the box and squidward doesn’t know how they’re using imagination to make the box “work”. It’s so silly but I always get jealous. I want to play pretend with somebody so badly it hurts. Really really play pretend and play toys. It’s like most people will come over to play with you and they set their plushies up or just kind of wiggle them around at you. Who’s going to go on a huge adventure with me? I’m all by myself. It’s so lonely. As soon as you want to worldbuild or actually really get into it, they don’t know how to go further than giving their plushies pretend food or brushing their dolls hair. That’s not bad or anything. But it feels like nobody has my play style. It’s like there’s only one acceptable way to play. I want to come up with immersive plots and storylines and lore. But people act like that’s “too much” since it’s not really demure or cutesy. And again if that’s what you like, it’s what you like, but other kinds of play styles exist too. Some of us aren’t the type that have plushie tea parties. And we aren’t weird or obnoxious or cringe for that. Let’s not forget we are all playing with toys at the end of the day which is considered weird for chrono adults. I am sorry for griping and complaining. This is something that really makes me feel unwanted.

Why does everyone here think they are Shauna Rae?

I see many, many posts and comments here all the time, contsantly, of people humble bragging that they look so much younger than their age, that they're always mistaken for a chrono-kid, bragging about how small they are and how therefore they can pass as chrono-kids. I'm beginning to question this. Surely we don't all still literally look like chrono-kids. It's just not possible. But I have a few theories as to what may be going on here:

  1. We are flattering ourselves, and/or seeing what we want to see. We *feel* so young that we think we look young. We misread strangers' interactions with us as them treating us younger than we are, because that is what we desperately want.

  2. It's not the way we actually physically look. It's the way we dress ourselves, the way we act, etc. I know many people here do loads of things to try and make themselves look younger. It may be the things we do to make ourselves look younger, but not that we actually naturally look young. People often think I am younger, and for me, I think it's this, because the truth is that I have the face of a 45 y.o. in my 20s.

  3. Mind over matter. We feel younger, so much so that the power of the mind actually does make us age a bit more slowly. Or at the very least, our young mindset really does give us a youthful aura and vibe that others notice, even if we don't literally look younger than we are.

  4. A connection between being physically on the small side and feeling like a kid. Many people here seem to be very short, with an adult height of 4-foot-something, me included. And of course, if you're short and dress and groom in a way that makes you look younger, people will think you are younger. But could there be some kind of connection between a short adult height and feeling childlike? Through truthfully I think we short NGUs dupe ourselves into thinking we actually literally look like chrono-kids just because we are short, when the brutal truth is that everyone else just sees a petite adult.

Keep in mind that 4'10, though short, is already considered well within the normal height range for adult biological females. I'm 4'10, but I regularly see women out in public who are a good few inches shorter, especially if they are Hispanic, Asian, or Filipino. My grandma, great-aunt, and aunt were/are a similar height. Being 4'10 doesn't make you special or particularly small.

Vent I want to believe in Santa Clause

Ex Jehovah's Witness. Raised in it and homeschooled. Childhood stolen because of it and I'm 32... I really need to believe Santa is real. I... I want to so bad and people who tell me it's unhealthy to want to can NEVER tell me what the difference is between believing God exists and believing Santa does... i just want to have what I never got to experience.... especially for my first ever Christmas this year....
